Ace Frehley: Back In The Anomaly Groove
From: Brave Words

It's been twenty years, four Presidents, and many receding hairlines since ACE FREHELY last released an album. Of course, the Spaceman hasn't been missing in action. He returned to KISS for the highly successful Reunion tour, the ill-conceived 3-D Psycho Circus tour and the never-ending Farewell tour, but most importantly Ace faced his alcohol demons face on and won.

September 15th marks the return of Ace as a recording artist with the release of Anomaly (his fifth and best solo studio album or certainly on par with his classic 1978 album), but more importantly the day celebrates Ace's third anniversary of walking away from the bottle and re-claiming his life and health.

The Spaceman took Bravewords on a mattress shopping excursion for our sometime distracted, but pleasant discussion of all things Ace.

Mitch Lafon: You've made a great hard rock album with no outside vocalists. Was it important to make this a true Ace Frehley album?

KISS Destroyed Sarnia
From: Fazer Music

For 11 years now, Sarnia Ontario has played host to an ever-growing music festival known as Rogers Bayfest. Split over two weekends, they celebrated last year as their 10th anniversary by shaking up the city with hit acts like Bon Jovi and Motley Crue. With two legendary bands headlining last year, the biggest question for the current 11th year ended up being how on earth the Bayfest organizers would top such a show. The answer to that question... KISS!

Being able to cover this year's event was something special to me as I grew up in Sarnia. Bayfest began long after I moved away, yet none of my return trips ever coincided with the festival. Finally my timing was spot-on and I managed to take in the most incredible show of my life to date.

This was definitely one for the history books as far as the small city of Sarnia is concerned. Fans of KISS, known as the KISS Army, invaded the town early in the day, even though gates would not open until 6pm. As I made my way to the show grounds I spied more and more fans dressed up as KISS members and some of them were very creative costume wise. It is amazing what one can do with old hockey gear and a few boxes of tinfoil. Once inside the backstage area, I immediately spotted actual members of the band KISS as they walked around socializing with crew and media folk. Tommy Thayer and Paul Stanley were nearby signing some KISS memorabilia for fans as Gene Simmons chatted with some locals.

Guitar Player Magazine Editor Previews 5 New KISS Tracks
From: Mick's Headbangers Ball

The editor of Guitar Player magazine had a chance to preview five songs off the new KISS album, which is scheduled for release in early October. He writes on the publication' s Facebook page, "Heard 5 songs. If you dig KISS, you're gonna dig this new album. Paul sings his ass off. Eric plays some amazingly powerful drums. Gene was finally made to play all of his bass parts (apparently, in the past, if someone had a cool bass idea, he let them play it), and he DOES have a pretty driving sound. Finally, Paul and Tommy's guitars sound HUGE -- with some fab riffs and '70s-style solos."

Thayer wrote and sang his first song on the album, while Singer also got his first opportunity to sing a lead vocal on an original song.

Simmons recently told The Canadian Press that there were no outside writers working on the Paul Stanley-produced disc. He also described the album's sound as "no strings, no keyboards, no synths, no tambourines, no nothing — just meat and potatoes."

Sprio Papadatos: "Ace Was Spiraling Out Of Control On His Last KISS Tour"
From: Rockpages.gr

We continue our KISS special feature with the 33rd interview of a KISS-related figure. This week, Spiro Papadatos, KISS' graphic designer/head of merchandising. Here's an excerpt:

Rockpages.gr: When you put on the make-up, you have a strong resemblance with Gene. Was there ever a time that you were close to replace him for a concert?

Spiro Papadatos: No. Gene has never missed a show. But, there was this one time in 2000 when Ace thought it was going to happen. We were in Binghamton, New York for a show on the Farewell Tour. Paul, Ace and Peter were already at the gig and in the dressing room. Gene, who often travels separately, hadn't arrived yet because his flight out of New York City was delayed due to bad weather. At the time, I was KISS' merchandise manager and was working on the main concourse level of the arena when I got a call on my radio from someone who sounded a lot like Ace. The voice on the other end said, "Hey Spiro, get down here, you're playing tonight... I'm not getting ready until you start putting on makeup." I said, "Who is this?" It was hard to hear because of all the noise in the arena but it sounded like Ace or someone just trying to screw with me. "It's Ace, come down to the dressing room, you're playing tonight!" I love Ace. I think he's a great guy, but the truth is, he was really spiraling out of control on his last KISS tour. Without getting into detail, it seemed that every day on that tour, he was getting into trouble or new "adventures". You really didn't know what to expect with Ace and this just seemed like another one of his pranks. So, I went down to the band's dressing room to find out what was going on. When I got there, Paul and Peter were sitting in front of their mirrors putting on their makeup. Ace was lying down on a couch. Gene wasn't around. I asked Ace if he called me on my radio. He said, "Yeah, Gene's not here, you're playing with us tonight." I remember thinking this had to be a joke so I just looked at him and kinda laughed and said, "What? Says who?" He said, "Me. Gene's not here so you need to start getting ready... you know all the songs, right?" I said, "Yeah, but... where's Doc?" That's when I found out that Doc wasn't there either and Tommy, who was the band's road manager back then, was in LA editing "The Last KISS" video. Suddenly, Peter walked over to our side of the room and said, "Hey Ace, are you crazy? Paul is sitting right over there, he can hear everything you're saying." I looked over at Paul, hoping he would shed some light on the situation but he wasn't paying any attention. He was getting ready for the show, business as usual. For a moment, the thought of actually playing with KISS entered my mind. I mean, doing a commercial or a TV show just wasn't the same as playing with the band in an actual live show. Was this really going to happen? I knew I could do it, I knew all the songs… then I gave my head a shake and said, "This is crazy. As much as I'd love to do this, I can't do anything unless I hear it from Doc, Paul or Gene. I have to go back to work" and I left the room. As I was walking down the hall, Gene, who had just arrived, was walking towards me making his way to the band's dressing room. He walked into the room, didn't say a word to anyone, sat down beside Paul and started putting on his makeup. Later that night, KISS was on stage, on time, as usual.

Fans Meet Tommy and Eric
From: Mike S. Fowler & Marije Boks

I'd like to share an amazing opportunity that took place after the KISS concert at Casino Rama this past Monday July 20th. Firstly, from our seats in the 6th row from the stage (Gene's side) it was spectacular! From start to finish, they played and they owned the stage. Like many fans, I've seen quite a few concerts over the years, but nothing could match the intimacy of playing at the Casino Rama venue. Or so I thought.

As soon as the concert ended we were at the stage to find any and all guitar picks thrown out in to the crowd. Sorting through the mounds of snow like paper confetti and begging the roadies for just one item, we walked away with an Eric Singer drumstick and several guitar picks from Gene and Paul, (wish we found a Tommy pick). Now that topped the evening off - or so we thought.

Classic KISS But Sonically Grander
From: Fangoria

As a lifelong, card carrying member of the KISS Army, I just had to share...

This Tuesday past I had my rock rolled off seeing the band that, for me, has become mythical - KISS - live at Casino Rama in Orillia, Ontario. The two night stop was part of an appendage of their ALIVE 35 tour, celebrating the 35th anniversary of the double disc live album that put them on the map, ALIVE. The tour boasted a whack of off-kilter Canadian stops including Sarnia and Windsor, in addition to Ottawa, Halifax and Montreal and I was lucky enough to get floor seats verrrry near front of stage and managed to get close enough in the photo pit that I could see up Paul Stanley's nose, close enough to get Gene Simmons' drool in my eye...

If you scroll over my Blood Spattered Blog, you can read up on how important KISS is to my horror heritage, to my outrageous, exploitation culture leanings. They have been my heroes since I was old enough to talk in full sentences and, even when it was terribly un-cool to dig the Simmons/Stanley machine, I was there, waving the flag. When they got rid of the makeup and became full on metal, I still stayed, mainly because I believed then as I believe now that Stanley is an incredible songwriter and has the 2nd best howl in rock and roll (Robert Plant having the first). I even saw them during that naked phase, on the ASYLUM tour when I was 11.

What's New In KISS Collecting
KISS Glass-Faced Wall Clocks
From: KISSmuseum.com

New KISS Flat Glass-Faced Wall Clocks. There have been some inaccurate proto-type images of these items going around that show a typical, clunky plastic bubble-faced clock, which is NOT what these are - The face is a flat plate of glass with the artwork screened on the back; much like a pinball or slot machine. The hands stand out from the face and it has no cover. No reason for one. This is a very sleek, sexy design, not like the junky plastic-faced clocks from the past.

Runs on battery power. Face is 14" wide.

KISS His Axe: An Exculsive Interview With Bruce Kulick
From: ClassicRockRevisted.com

Bruce Kulick first came to prominence in the band KISS, where he played lead guitar from 1984 to 1996. Nowadays, Bruce plays lead guitar for Grand Funk Railroad and, occasionally, releases solo CDs. Coming soon is Bruce's third solo effort titled BK3. Unlike his first two efforts, Audio Dog and Transformers, BK3 will feature a heavier sound and many contributions from some of Kulick's famous friends, including Gene and Nick Simmons.

We caught up with Kulick fresh off the stage at The Moondance Jam in Walker, Minnesota. Bruce gave us a sneak peak behind the making of BK3 as well as talking about his role in Grand Funk and his place in the history of KISS. Bruce is open and honest about his career, including if he would have put on Ace Frehley's makeup if asked. Read on to learn more about the upcoming album and Bruce Kulick as both a musician and a man.

Jeb: Grand Funk Railroad has a bit more guitar in it with you in the band.

Bruce: In some ways, I even get featured more than KISS with this band. Every song has a solo, other than "Some Kind of Wonderful," which would not be appropriate. When I was getting into bands from the late 60's and 70's, I loved power trios. I remember seeing them on television and thinking, "That's great. The drums are pounding, the bass is thumping and the guitar is soloing." To be able to be in the band now is amazing. I play with more gain than Mark [Farner] but I respect his signature riffs.

Jeb: Tell me about BK3. Is this going to be out on your website?

Still The Hottest Band In The World
From: Splash Magazine

The spectacle that is KISS live must genuinely be experienced to be fully understood and appreciated. Though it may be explained in articles much like this, it truly should be witnessed for one's self. The creativity in design as well as the preparation and execution of a show of this magnitude, undeniably deserves its ranking as one of the greatest shows on Earth.

Without scaling down the menacing stage ensemble in lieu of the 5000 soft-seater arena, crews worked two full days bringing the event to the Colosseum inside Caesars Windsor Casino. With the venue filled to capacity, the city often overshadowed by the neighbouring Motor City, Detroit, Michigan came alive. Amid their historic appearance at Cobo Hall in '75 (KISS's first sell-out of a major arena) and later at Tiger Stadium in '96 (launch of their reunion tour), the event seemed to hold more significance for fans and possibly for the band as well.

Now celebrating three and a half decades in the music business with their tour coined Alive 35, the band is sustained by only two of its original four members. Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley have always maintained their loyalty to the super group, though they have occasionally ventured off to fulfill their own individual interests. Stanley's passion for the arts has found himself immersed in musical theatre (Phantom of the Opera), branching off on a solo music project and more recently placing his emotions to canvas for a very lucrative abstract art endeavour.

KISS Slays Rama
From: KISSonline.com

There is nothing like the rush of a great KISS high!!! I am STILL riding it!!! Casino Rama was DESTROYED by a high voltage, high octane, and thunderous KISS onslaught that only the TRUE MASTERS of metal can provide.

Gene, Paul, Eric and Tommy came to ROCK and were not shy about doing it to the MAX!!! This was an AWESOME venue for my 11th KISS show. If you ever get the chance to see KISS in the confines of an in-your-face¯setting like a casino, DO NOT pass it up!!! I know they just did a show last week for 90,000 maniacal fans, but the boys were playing like they were in front of 200,000!!!

I thought they were tight when I caught them last fall, but I honestly believe they blew that show completely away at the first date of the 2 night stand at Casino Rama. This lineup KILLS!!! The way they interact with each other and the crowd is unparalleled!

The KLASSIC KISS vaults were wide open as one MONSTER tune after another was unleashed on the rabid KISS ARMY members in attendance. The seasoned veterans as well as the new recruits were laid to waste by the KISS WAR MACHINE.

Jonesboro Expo Benefits Charity
From: Gaylon Tyner

My name is Gaylon Tyner. Last year with a couple of friends, we started a KISS FAN Expo in our hometown of Jonesboro, Arkansas. This Aug. 15th we are having a second one. The purpose of our conventions are to raise money for needing charities.

This year we are helping a seven year old boy, Knute Tate, who realized that there were homeless people in the town. By stepping up and being a hero with a great heart, he started raising money to build a new, bigger homeless shelter. Since October, Knute and his classmates have raised almost $10,000.

Fitting enough, our convention this year is focusing on "The Elder." I have written a play with two other guys and we are premiering the show in downtown Jonesboro, along with a small concert and memorabilia from around our area.

If a seven year old boy can raise $10,000, with a lot left to go, we as adults and KISS Fans should be able to at least do the same or more. Our goal is to raise at least $5000. We are calling out to ALL KISS fans for help us as we unite as one.

Support can be from ordering tickets for our event or by email contact at gaylontyner@yahoo.com or sending a donation in care of the Salvation Army or Knute's Piggy Bank / PO Box 397,Jonesboro, Arkansas 72403.

Andre Augustine: Gene Is The Main Person Who "Moves" KISS"
From: Rockpages.gr

We continue our KISS special feature with the 32nd interview of a KISS-related figure. This week, Andre Augustine, head of security for KISS in the 90s. Here's an excerpt:

Rockpages.gr: Please, share with us a funny incident from the time that you worked with KISS (that includes KISS members, of course...)...

Andre Augustine: Funny with a twist...We were in Chicago at the Ritz Carlton and I was getting ready to settle down and hit the sack when I got a call from Peter. He was napping but could not get to sleep. He told me he kept hearing a buzzing in his wall by the bed. He had called the front desk and maintenance came up there 2 or 3 times already but couldn't find what it was. So at 12:30am I went to Peter's room and knocked. He let me in and showed me the area that the buzzing was coming from. It was in the area of the nightstand next to the headboard. So I sat there for a few mins and after about 5 mins I heard the buzzing. It seemed to be coming from the nightstand. So I opened the drawer to the nightstand and low and behold there was the culprit. His pager was set on vibrate and had been buzzing for the last 4 hours in the drawer... BTW his fiancé and daughter had been trying for hours to reach him since he had a DO NOT DISTURB on his phone. Go figure...

Rockpages.gr: Now that you remember those years, which KISS member - in your mind - was the one that moved the KISS vehicle? Gene, Paul or both?

Andre Augustine: Gene is the main person who moves KISS but Paul is right there nipping at his heels every step of the way...

KISS Army Invades Halifax
From: Chronicle Herald

The sea of thousands of fans dressed up in rain ponchos, slickers and heavy weather gear looked more like the Kiss navy than the Kiss army on Halifax's North Common on Saturday.

Yet the fear of smeared face paint didn't deter the faithful from transforming themselves into the Starchild, the Demon, Space Ace and the Cat Man for the occasion. For all anybody knows, the real Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer could have been roaming the crowd and no one would have been the wiser.

I didn't feel compelled to put on the greasepaint, but if I had a time machine and could go back to the mid-70s to ask my 11-year-old self what bands he'd most like to see, the top two choices would be the Beatles and Kiss. The Beatles had been broken up for years at that point, and there was no way in Hades that my parents would let me go near those so-called "Knights in Satan's Service" and their legendary shows at the Halifax Forum.

Cut to three decades later and within the space of a week we've had ex-moptop Paul McCartney and those rock and roll action figures -whose acronym could more properly be Keep It Spectacular, Stupid - making for one giddily ecstatic inner 11-year-old by the time the legendary foursome took the stage on Saturday night to the primal pounding of Deuce.

Of course they didn't just walk on stage; the foursome descended from the lighting rig on a platform while a giant banner bearing a band logo as distinctive a trademark as the Nike swoosh dropped to the floor. Immediately they went into character, with Simmons on the prowl like a widow-peaked vampire, Stanley a strutting Mick Jagger cartoon and Thayer approximating former guitarist Ace Frehley's spaced out stage stance, swaying on his massive silver platform boots.

KISS Promised A Spectacle, Kept Promise
From: Le Soleil

The Catman, Spaceman, Demon and Starchild arrived last night at Bluesfest and they quickly turned it into an event. An event on stage. An event in the crowd. A very active, participatory crowd. A massive crowd!!

The show lasted over two hours. KISS was, as always, KISS. KISS basically, will always be KISS. It is a winning and profitable group and will be until the day when Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons decide that it is finished. And the question is this: why would anyone abandon this group yet, because it appeared to be at its best in the heart of this 35th anniversary tour? I cannot skimp on words; KISS gave more than the customer asked.

The public wants to hear the KISS of yesterday and they want it as at as loud of potential decibels as possible. In short, the crowd wants a night to rock to the sound of a band that is hard to resist. KISS is rock hard and served up at the highest level. The show is still effective and delivered by musicians who have an innate sense of showmanship.

"You want to hear our old songs? Then you will not be disappointed," said Paul Stanley.

KISS Rocks 90,000 In Quebec
From: Le Soleil

UPDATE: We were just informed that the attendance for last night's show was 90,000!!!!!

After waiting for nine years, Quebec was clearly overdue for a visit from the infernal quartet, KISS. Tens of thousands of KISS Army soldiers descended to see their idols on Thursday. Large and small, men and women painted their faces and have donned their homemade costumes of the devil, the starchild, the spaceman and the cat-man, these comic characters were embodied by Gene Simmons (bass, vocals), Paul Stanley (vocals, guitar), Tommy Thayer (guitar) and Eric Singer (drums, vocals).

With KISS, as is always true, the show was never limited to the stage. At the beginning of the show, a platform descended from the ceiling on which the three guitarists arrived . The stage featured the classic KISS logo in white bulbs. And then there were the explosions, flames, smoke, fireworks, confetti ...

And oh yes! How can we forget the music! "From old-school rock to KISS," says Paul Stanley, who offered a few words in French before apologizing that he could not do more and to continue in English.

KISS Cranks Up The Spectacle For Record Bluesfest Crowd
From: Ottawa Citizen

Nothing could stop KISS in front of a record-setting crowd of 40,000 at Bluesfest last night. Not the rain, the decibel limit or even the snub to Shannon Tweed, who watched her man, bassist Gene Simmons, perform from a hastily installed VIP section on a raised platform near the sound tent.

Up on the massive stage, the band steamrolled over any obstacle, be it weather-related or bureaucratic, and delivered a concert that lived up to all expectations in terms of lights, volume and special effects. The lights were blinding, the sound was blasting and the effects included pyro, aerial wires and their trademark monster-glam costumes.

But what about the music? Well, you have to hand it to lead singer Paul Stanley for taking over the reins to the legendary '70s hard-rockers. When he wasn't shredding his voice at the microphone, he acted as host of the rock extravaganza, and did most of the talking. Word is he's also the producer responsible for getting the band back to basics on its forthcoming album, the first in a decade, due for release in October.

Fans Hooked For Life
From: Ottawa Citizen

Six-year-old Mackenzie Durocher, her face painted perfectly like KISS's Paul Stanley, sits on her father's lap before the show. Well-drilled for years by now, she can name several KISS songs. At home, she likes to pretend to smash a guitar to the band's music. Her other favourite act is SpongeBob SquarePants.

This is life in the KISS Army, where kids are drafted into service barely out of the womb.

Mackenzie's father, Patrick Durocher, 36, beams at his daughter as she sticks her tongue out ferociously like Gene Simmons.

This is his seventh KISS concert, but her first.

"Once you go, you're hooked for life," he says, explaining, as most of the KISS soldiers do, that the show is simply like no other.

Bob Nicholson passes the same type of heritage to his children. Nicholson, 42, is dressed in one of the most eye-catching Gene Simmons demon outfits at the show. Mobbed by fellow fans begging to take a picture with him, the Carleton Place chef has his four kids in tow, two girls and two boys, ages 11 to 17, all with painted faces.

KISS Nation Live At The Maryland Theatre
From: RollingStone.com

Kiss' original guitarist, Ace Frehley, has primarily focused on playing live shows since he left the band in 2002, though no new studio material has surfaced. But that's soon about to change. September 15th will see the release of Ace's first solo album in nearly 20 years, Anomaly, via his own label, Bronx Born Records. Produced almost entirely by Frehley, the album shows why many rock and metal guitarists list "Space Ace" as a prime six-string influence, as evidenced by the epic "Genghis Khan" and a kick ass cover of Sweet's "Fox on the Run." Frehley recently sat down with Rolling Stone to discuss the new album, his ex-bandmates and kicking booze once and for all.

The September 15th release of Anomaly will be your three-year anniversary of sobriety.

I've accepted the fact that I can never drink again as long as I live, and I'm ok with it. And it should be easy when you think about it - some people get allergic to shellfish. When they eat it, they break out or get sick. And you know what those people say to themselves? "I can't eat shellfish anymore for the rest of my life." And they're ok with it. But for some reason, when it comes to alcohol, people get crazy. It's getting past that.

How does Anomaly compare to your previous work?

Everybody keeps talking about my first solo album [1978's Ace Frehley], and I keep thinking, "Right now, I feel exactly like I did after I finished mixing that record." I kind of knew I had something hot, that everybody was going to like. Maybe history will repeat itself again - 31 years later.

I understand you had to re-think one of your concert trademarks.

The biggest problem with the smoking guitar thing now is the fire marshals. So right now, I'm working on a miniature fog machine that goes in the guitar [laughs].

Are you still in contact with Kiss?

Yeah, I spoke to Paul, Peter - I haven't spoke to Gene in a couple of years. The last time Gene left a message on my answering machine, it was to do his television show. He was doing a roast. I wanted to do it, so I called Paul and Peter, and both of them told me that they weren't going to do it. So after hearing that, I felt like, "Well, if the whole band isn't going to be there to roast Gene, maybe it would be better if I didn't do it either." Because initially, Gene told me it was going to be Steven Tyler and Cher, and they backed out. You don't jump on a sinking ship [laughs].

Would you ever consider another Kiss reunion?

I'm having so much fun with this new album. It's not something I think about at all anymore. The reunion tour was supposed to be it - that's what they told me when they asked me to do it. But then they go, "Now we want to do a farewell tour." I said, "OK, I'll do a farewell tour." It ended in Australia, and then I get a phone call when I come back, "Now we want to do something else." Then Gene is on my answering machine, "Ace, we're going to go out. If you don't want to do it, we're going to use another guitar player." What is that, a threat? I didn't even answer the phone [laughs]. That was that.

KISS Dynasty Is Alive New Album Coming
From: Examiner

Love them or hate them; 70's theatrical rock band KISS is alive and well. The band recently announced on their official website www.kissonline.com that a new album is in the works and will be released in October 2009.

The new KISS album is the bands first studio album since "Psycho Circus" back in 1998.

Lead singer Paul Stanley is producing the new album and reports that "it is all written within the band and it rocks." Paul also says, "guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer will both handle lead vocals at some points on the album."

Bass guitarist Gene Simmons was quoted as saying, "The idea is to make the record quickly, like we did at the time of Destroyer, Rock And Roll Over and Love Gun. The idea is to work well, little by little, we can not spend too much time in the studio, and it has to be fast."

Paul Stanley on Art, American Idol & His Band's Latest "Comeback"
From: InisteAtlanta.com

With KISS having recently come off of a huge stadium tour across South America, Paul Stanley continues to keep busy. About ten years ago, as the result of a divorce, a friend suggested he try painting as a cathartic way of helping to express his emotions. He went and purchased brushes and canvasses and he's been at it ever since. Stanley has never been one to stand on the sideline. In the past he's played the lead in the Phantom of the Opera in Toronto and toured on his own in support of his solo release "Live to Win." He's currently producing the forthcoming KISS album, the band's first release of new material in eleven years, and continues to show his art work at Wentworth Galleries across the country. He recently took time out of his hectic schedule to speak with us.

Between touring with KISS, producing the new album, your growing family, your artwork, you've got a lot going on.

It's been busy. Four months ago I had a little baby girl. Other than that we just finished a stadium tour of South America playing to anywhere from forty to sixty thousand people a night. Before that we did our biggest, most successful tour of Europe playing seven weeks, thirty shows to over four hundred thousand people. Then, I've got my art shows, which are normally once a month in different cities and I'm about a week from completing the first KISS album in eleven years which should be out in September. Other than that, I'm taking it easy!

With regards to your artwork, having begun to paint as a way to express emotions from the divorce ten years ago, with that now well behind you, has your approach changed with so many positive things going on in your life?

KISS Rocks By Its Own Rule Book
From: The Gazette

Halloween came early this year. The Bell Centre was filled to the rafters Monday night, with a sellout crowd of 15,000 Kiss devotees on hand to celebrate the band's Kiss Alive/35 tour.

And these weren't fly-by-night fans, either. This was the diehard contingent. Kiss T-shirts everywhere, old and new; face paint galore (let's play count the Gene Simmons look-alikes). Many proud parents brought their kids, who were all too happy to get in on the action - a 10-year-old boy in the row in front of me eagerly asked to peek at my set list.

Cheers erupted when a giant KISS banner was unfurled shortly before showtime, as songs by the Who blasted over the PA. The lights dimmed, and the arena went wild.

"All right Montreal! You want the best? You got the best - the hottest band around: KISS!"

They descended from the ceiling, of course. A platform came down carrying original members Simmons and Paul Stanley, plus guitarist Tommy Thayer. Drummer Eric Singer was already at his post, sitting on a raised platform of his own, above a massive KISS sign lit in Vegas-style lights.

Rock Superstars KISS Rule Explosive Show
From: Windsor Star

"All right, Caesars Windsor! You wanted the best, you got the best! The hottest band in the world: KISS!"

So began a night of big riffs, big explosions and total commitment when rock superheroes ruled the Colosseum stage on Saturday night.

I'll say that last bit again because it bears repeating: Total commitment.

Behind the KISS spectacle (and it is indeed a spectacle beyond spectacles) is a mentality to put on the best damn show possible.

It's expensive, uninhibited, loud and entertaining. No irony involved. No shoe-gazing cynicism. They come to rock your butt, so your butt will be rocked.

KISS Wows Bayfest
From: The Observer

Thousands of screaming fans 'loved-it-loud' last night when legendary rockers KISS took to the stage at Sarnia Bayfest.

"How you doin' people?" yelled Paul Stanley to a screaming crowd, with cameras high in the air, at 10 p.m. sharp. "Did you come tonight to get some rock and roll?

"Well you came to the right place."

Outrageous pyrotechnics exploded on the massive stage as frontman Gene Simmons belted out the opening hit, "Deuce," amid a thundering roar from the 21,00 strong crowd, dominated by their famous fan following known affectionately as the KISS Army.

Stanley followed up with "Strutter," before embarking on a number of classic hits.

This probably was the most prep we've ever done for a show," said organizer Michele Stokley, citing a fleet of eight trucks, four buses, 900 pounds of dry ice and enough pyro to fire-bomb a city.

Ace Frehley Releases First Solo Album In 20 Years 'Anomaly' On September 15th
From: MyRocketScience.com

For the first time in nearly 20 years, legendary guitarist Ace Frehley has emerged to add a new exclamation point to his celebrated solo career. Scheduled for liftoff on September 15th, the original KISS guitarist’s fifth solo album, Anomaly, will be released on his own Bronx Born Records, with Rocket Science providing a full label service platform. Frehley, a long time Gibson artist, will launch his second Gibson Ace Frehley Signature Les Paul guitar with the musical instrument giant later this year. His first signature Gibson guitar (in 1997) was one of the best selling signature models of all time.

One of the most beloved personalities in rock 'n' roll, Frehley's the man behind not only KISS' iconic logo, but the all-time stadium anthem "New York Groove." From the thunderous guitar riffs of the first single "Outer Space" to his supercharged cover of Sweet's 1975 classic "Fox on the Run," Anomaly includes several nods to his distinguished career. The pickup acrobatics of "Fractured Quantum" and wah-wah scourge of "Genghis Khan" (featuring backup vocals from Meat Loaf's daughter Pearl Aday) are signature Ace. It should go without saying, but "this album has some heavy, heavy songs," Frehley promises.

Check out the new commercial for Anomaly

Paul Stanley: This Is KISS - Classic KISS
From: KISSonline.com

If you been reading KISSONLINE, it's no surprise to you now. We ARE done recording our new album.

What might well be a surprise is that at the least, the album is right up there with our best. As much as we may have tried at some other times to achieve this, the chemistry, line-up or lack of total commitment from everyone might have been cause for it being impossible. Not now. Not this time.

I know that when you hear it you will agree.

Before we began the album, I said I was only interested in doing it if I produced and we followed set ground rules; Total commitment by everyone, pure guitar driven KISS, no outside writers, no outside players and my opinion and say would always be final.

All said yes and I know we'd all say we've never had more fun together.

All four of us made this our priority. Everyone was involved everyday. From the first day of writing to the last day of recording everyone was there giving 100% to making this the album we knew we had in us. I've never seen Gene more selfless (yes...Gene!), focused or harder working. His bass playing, songs and overall contribution help to make this the album you've wanted for so long. Without his spirit, this wouldn't have been possible.

As far as Tommy's guitar playing, he took this chance at bat to consistently hit it out of the park. His playing is fiery and rooted firmly in our history, while making his own mark. Tommy's singing, writing contributions and total involvement made clear what's been missing for so long.

In the twenty years I've known Eric, I've never seen him this relaxed or creative. His playing is the foundation of our next step forward. Relentless and full of spit and swagger. Many lead singers don't have Eric's chops or range. He's singing great on his track and all over the album.

Wait till you hear what we've got for you.

Do I sound proud of everyone and what we've done together? I am, and I should be.

Eleven songs. Eleven winners.

This IS KISS. Classic KISS.

It's been a long time coming.

PAUL

Tommy Thayer: You're Gonna Love It
From: KISSonline.com

Well the brand new KISS studio album is almost ready to goWell the brand new KISS studio album is almost ready to go - actually more like ready to EXPLODE! We finished recording last week, with the exception of one tune that needs an hour or so more --- I have to tell you it KICKS!

Paul has done a fantastic job keeping everyone in line and the direction clear. As you might have heard, all the tunes were written within the band and recorded analog -- which means hot, heavy and rockin' in the classic sense!

We definitely didn't over-think it.

From the beginning stages of writing, rehearsing and arranging the tunes, to putting the trax down on tape, we went with our GUT... kept it raw and real. We didn't go more than two or three takes when we recorded the basic tracks, which by-the-way, we recorded with all four of us together -- which is a rare (or non-existent) occurrence with bands in this modern digital age. We had a laugh when we were tracking the 11th and very last tune and Eric said, we have to get this in two or three takes like all the others or it ain't no good!

The true test for how new tunes hold up is when you play them live. As everybody probably knows, we haven't played any of these brand-new songs in concert, but we did run a few of them at our sound check in Milwaukee last week. Yep, you guessed right... They SCORCHED! Our tour crew guys were like, HOLY S**T, what was that?!!

It's been a gas doing this record with Paul, Eric and Gene -- truly a collaborative effort! I told the guys the other day that in my humble opinion, this is by far the most cohesive sounding record KISS has made in a long, long time -- meaning that ALL the tunes are great, the sound kicks my ass, and it all fits together perfectly as an album.

IT DON'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THAT!

Can't wait for you to hear it... You're gonna LOVE it!

Rocking The Art World
From: Southpark Magazine

Paul Stanley of KISS brings his works to Charlotte this month.

For more than three decades, Paul Stanley has rocked in black-on-white makeup as lead singer and songwriter for the band KISS. Now, he's drawing audiences as a visual artist with his bright, multicolored paintings. His works will be on display at Wentworth Gallery at SouthPark mall this month, and he'll make two personal appearances. Stanley spoke exclusively to SouthPark in advance of his visit.

Why did you decide to start painting?

I had a background in art from when I was younger. I went to The High School of Music & Art in New York City. I managed to fail art. To me, creativity is something that has to be self-motivated, not punching a clock. It was more about rebelling against the idea of working to someone else's schedule. I understand it - it just doesn't work for me. No one works harder than I do, but I work hard at things that I want to do.

So I obviously pursued the music, and haven't done too badly at that. At some point, given the opportunity and the time, I wanted to pursue other challenges. Painting is another means of expressing myself emotionally.

Looking back, are you prouder of your music or of being a visual artist?

Don't Believe Everything You Read
From: GeneSimmons.com

A word of advice Re: the INTERNET: Don't believe everything you read.

Recently, more than a few fake Gene Simmons sites have reported on my activities: Mostly, they are false. And needless to say, so are the fake Gene Simmons'.

Additionally, there have been stories about me posted on Facebook and Twitter that are likewise false. Nor have I been in places that have reported seeing me. And some of the fotos purported to be me, are not (check out our letter page for one of 'em)...

There have been bars that have reported seeing me drunk. I don't drink, have never been drunk in my life and usually don't go to bars -- unless I'm there to see a band. There have been concerts I've supposedly attended -- difficult to do when I'm at the other end of the country. And, a host of other crazy stories, including children I've supposedly sired. When our legal team offers to take DNA tests and informs these people that we would take full legal action for any frivolous claims, defamation of character and slander -- translation, we will sue you to the grave and beyond, Surprise!!! They disappear.

In short, unless you hear it from me, it ain't so.

Eric Singer: No Ballads, No Slow Songs, No Filler
From: KISSonline

You Wanted The Best?

Well the wait is almost over...

I have been hearing KISS fans say for a longtime that "All's we want is NEW KISS music" ... Well, sometimes wishes do come true!

Last December Paul called me up saying he wanted to make a new KISS record. He seemed very keen and was very specific about the approach to our latest endeavors.

He basically said he wanted us to make a KISS record and music in the purest sense. Meaning No outside writers, the BAND plays on everything, and we use vintage equipment.

Guess what?

The end result is everything I could have hoped for.

I have to say this has been the most fun and pleasure making a record I have ever been involved in. The chemistry and overall vibe really made for such a great atmosphere and the playing, sounds and songs just really capture what KISS is all about. Classic Rock & Roll.

As we were working up song ideas everyone was very in tune and conscious of our goals at all times. Gene and Paul would retrace their steps from the past and focused on paying tribute to their roots of the early styles of Classic KISS by paying close attention to the way they sang and the sounds of the instruments.

The camaraderie between everyone and especially Gene and Paul really made it easy for all to bring the best out of each other.

Paul took the reigns and headed up the project like the leader that he has been for over 35 years but, this time with a renewed, inspired and very patient style (he is a great dad after all). He really knew what he wanted from each of us individually and collectively.

We did the 11 new songs in small batches by getting into a rehearsal studio first to work up ideas. We then would move to the recording studio. The recordings would entail all of us playing "live" together in the room. As we captured each performance we would then add extra guitar parts and usually put a guide vocal on the track so we could live with it for a few days and make sure the tempos and vibe was right.

By the way we used NO click tracks on this record I am proud to say. We really went for capturing the live feel and essence of each song. And, Paul, Gene, Tommy and myself are the only musicians playing these songs. A true band effort and performance!

As for the songs?

Gene SImmons: Maybe The Best Record We've Done In 30 Years
From: KISSonline

Our new album (title of which you'll just have to wait a bit longer for) is just a few steps from being completely done. We're planning on re-visiting one of the eleven songs, to make sure it's gotten everything it deserves. Maybe re-arranging it one last time. Then, time to mix.

The entire writing and recording process of the album harkened back to an earlier, more innocent time. A time that produced albums such as ROCK AND ROLL OVER and LOVE GUN. And, the new songs have that feeling, I have to say.

It all started with a point of view Paul had. The view had to do with ignoring the times, ignoring the critics, not over thinking who and what we are...and that we had nothing to prove to anyone....nothing. We have been releasing albums and touring for 35 years and why wouldn't we want to do an "honest" record. Just do it!!! And, he wanted to produce the album himself!!!

While it's true in the past we had produced KISS records together. And we had both produced other acts outside of KISS. But here was Paul saying he wanted to shoulder the responsibility and burden of steering the good ship KISS on his own.

He was serious. And, I saw it was real. I saw the commitment he was going to make to the album and the band... and I agreed. We all trusted each other and saw the same vision of the band...and perhaps democracy is overrated...and sooner or later, someone had to decide.

And I will tell you here and now, he's done a great job.

Rockpages.gr: In comparison with your previous artworks, how different was the KISS cover?

Victor Stabin: It was a little bit different, but mainly it was slightly different techniques...I'd say, a little bit different.

Rockpages.gr: Did you have the chance to meet a member of KISS?

Victor Stabin: I met Gene, Paul and Ace.

Rockpages.gr: What was the impression that they gave you?

Victor Stabin: Gene was really into the whole project…he had a broad understanding of the comic history, he was very articulate and he seemed to be the one who was really interested in the KISS business side of things. Ace and Paul were there...they checked out the drawing and they were observing over the whole thing...see what's going on, you know...

Critter Smith flew on an airplane for the first time June 27.

"It was awesome taking off and looking out the window at how high we were," he said.

But that was nothing compared to what was waiting for him and his mom, Carol, after they landed in Milwaukee.

They were flown there as guests of KISS, one of the world's most famous rock-n-roll bands, for a concert that night.

Critter got to meet the band - Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer - before the show, take pictures during the show and returned home with a stash of memorabilia almost too big to carry.
