Click To Enlarge Me And Doc McGhee; KISS And Other Stories
From: Sun Times

I've covered popular music for 30 years.

Most managers get in your way and that's if you're lucky. I've lost track of unreturned phone calls and dark ports, but I won't forget when the Sun-Times sent me to Toronto to interview singer Robert Palmer. His manager told me that Palmer had throat problems and we would have to put off the conversation for a day. My editors told me to sit tight.

I spent an extra day in Toronto. I did some shopping and caught a movie. When I returned to the hotel, there was Robert Palmer in the bar yucking it up with his band. Maybe Robert Palmer didn't know of this end run, but it was the only time in my career I never got an interview.

Doc McGhee is not one of those guys.

Click To Enlarge Celebrating 33 Years Of 'KISS Meets The Phantom Of The Park'
From: Movies.Yahoo.com

In 1978, there were two things on the minds of boys ages 5 to 16. OK, maybe three. They were KISS, "Star Wars," and girls. You pick the order they were in for you personally. I was 6, so girls really hadn't figured into the equation yet.

Girls were on boys' minds for the obvious reasons. "Star Wars" was popular because it had just been released the year before and blew everyone away with its groundbreaking, never-before-seen special effects and imagery. After only being around since 1973, KISS was the hottest band in the world because of their shockingly explosive on-stage spectacle and look. They had already released several best-selling studio, live, and solo albums. They had t-shirts, stickers, belt buckles, and everything else you can think of with their logo and likenesses plastered on them. The band even had a comic book that featured the members as superheroes that was published through Marvel Comics.

Their manager, Bill Aucoin, could only see one other area KISS could move into that hadn't been explored yet. The band needed to make a movie. And not just any movie: a movie that put the band into the status of superheroes they were raised to in their comic book.

KISS lead singer Paul Stanley underwent successful surgery for "recurring vocal cord issues" Tuesday that the musician said Wednesday "come with 40 years of preaching rock 'n' roll."

His doctors say Stanley, who's been touring and recording with KISS for nearly 40 years, will make a "swift and complete" recovery, according to a statement from his publicist.

"I hold myself to a higher standard than others do," Stanley said. "With that in mind, I wanted to remedy a few minor issues that come with 40 years of preaching rock 'n' roll."

Read an excerpt from Ace Frehley's book, No Regrets: A Rock N Roll Memoir, which hits book stores November 1st:

Chapter 1: A BRONX TALE

When I was a kid I used to carry around this awful image in my head - a picture of three men tangled awkwardly in high-tension wires, fifty feet in the air, their lifeless bodies crisping in the midday sun.

The horror they endured was shared with me by my father, an electrical engineer who worked, among other places, at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, helping with the installation of a new power plant in the 1950s. Carl Frehley was a man of his times. He worked long hours, multiple jobs, did the best he could to provide a home for his wife and kids. Sometimes, on Sunday afternoons after church, he'd pile the whole family into a car and we'd drive north through the Bronx, into Westchester County, and eventually find ourselves on the banks of the Hudson River. Dad would take us on a tour of the West Point campus and grounds, introduce us to people, even take us into the control room of the electrical plant. I'm still not sure how he pulled that one off - getting security clearance for his whole family - but he did.

Dad would walk around, pointing out various sights, explaining the rhythm of his day and the work that he did, sometimes talking in the language of an engineer, a language that might as well have been Latin to me. Work was important, and I guess in some way he just wanted his kids to understand that; he wanted us to see this other part of his life.

From: Boston Music Spotlight

Ace Frehley has revealed plans for a solo tour this fall. The founding member and lead guitarist of KISS will perform at Foxboro's Showcase Live on Monday, October 31. Tickets for the Halloween show are available through Ticketmaster for $27.50.

The show will take place the day before the release of his autobiography, "No Regrets: A Rock 'N' Roll Memoir". Co-written by New York Times journalist Joe Layden, who also worked with Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine on his autobiography "Mustaine: A Heavy Metal Memoir", No Regrets' chronicles Frehley's remarkable career in music.

"I just turned 59, I think it's about time I start getting the stuff out and writing in down on paper before I forget it," Frehley said in an interview with Artisan News Service earlier this year.

Frehley, who concluded his tenure as "Spaceman" with KISS in 2002, has remained busy with a solo career. His latest release, 2009's Anomaly, debuted at #27 on the Billboard 200. Frehley produced most of the album himself with some help from Marti Frederiksen (Aerosmith). It marked his first set of all new material since 1989's Trouble Walkin'.

Fans attending the Foxboro show can purchase a special $200 VIP package, which includes a t-shirt, exclusive tour laminate, access to a meet and greet session with a photo opportunity and a copy of Anomaly for him to sign. However, the package does not include a ticket to the show.

KISS And Tears On Halloween
From: The Free Press

When I was a kid, roughly 8 or 9 years old, the only band that mattered was KISS.

The painted faces, the menacing glares, the straight-up, old-school rock 'n roll. They wanted to rock and roll all night and party every day. And so did we. Or, at least until our moms told us to go to bed.

KISS was hard not to love. And hard, for an 8- or 9-year-old, to not want to emulate. So we did. My best friend Kenny was Peter Criss. B.J. was Paul Stanley. Beasley was Ace Frehley. And I, of course, was Gene Simmons. Exactly how we all got to be the characters we got to be, I've long since forgotten. But I do remember Gene Simmons was the only guy I wanted to be.

Why?

Click To Enlarge Cult Film Fans Celebrate 25th Anniversary of 'Trick Or Treat'
From: Star

Twenty five years ago, on Oct. 24, 1986, the filmed-in-Wilmington movie "Trick or Treat" was released.

It wasn't a huge success at the time, but "Trick or Treat" has since become a cult classic among horror and music fans. Both adored and ridiculed - it stars a young Marc "Skippy" Price of TV's "Family Ties" and features rock stars Gene Simmons of KISS and Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath in small roles - "Trick or Treat" is mentioned on countless horror websites. The entertainment site Ain't It Cool News recently included it in its celebration of cult Halloween movies.

Joel Soisson, who was in Wilmington last summer as a producer of "Piranha 3DD," which is scheduled for release next year, was a co-writer and co-producer on "Trick or Treat."

Soisson and then-producing partner Michael S. Murphey, also a "Treat" co-writer, were line producers on 1985's "A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge." Soon after its release, Soisson said he was contacted by the Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis, who founded DEG, Wilmington's first movie studio.

From: The Herald-News

Eddie Balandas, whose growling South Side sneer can be heard booming out the intro for the album "KISS Alive II," died in a fitting way for a former security chief and roadie for the grease-painted rockers.

Mr. Balandas loved to mingle with KISS fans and answer their questions about a band that took Kabuki makeup to a level exceeded only by the group's longevity - which rivals that of a Galapagos tortoise.

After appearing at the Oct. 9 KISS Expo in Hillside - where the audience greeted him like a favorite uncle - Mr. Balandas rode his motorized scooter back to his suite at the Best Western Hotel.

Click To Enlarge My Fan Gift To Gene Shown On The Royal Rock Wedding Episode
From: Mike Fowler

There comes a time when a fan finds a want to create and give a gift to their favourite band for no more of a reason than to have hopes that the gift is enjoyed by the band. Sadly, no one really knows what happens to the gift after you give them, but this time, I knew! Here is what happened.

Back in July 26, 2011, I had KISS meet and greet tickets at Casino Rama, Ontario and decided to both give a gift and to have the band sign a copy for me to keep. But what to give? I thought the best gift would be a photo I took from the front row at the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre, Toronto KISS show back in 2010 of Gene making funny faces It was difficult to choose just one photo as they were all quite unique. The best resolve was to create a five pose collage, of sorts, of Gene and then print off two 8 x 10 photos, putting one in a nice black frame (making sure to put my name and address on the back). I called the photo, and very original it was, my "Multi-Gene" photo.

July 26, 2011 Casino Rama KISS meet and greet I was nervous and ecstatic as I waited to present my photo gift to Gene. When it was time for the band to do the rounds and meet with the fans, I presented my gift and asked if he would like to have a copy to keep. Gene stopped, looked at it and then said, "Yes, please." I asked him to sign a copy for me, of which he gladly did then posed for a photo with me. At this point I was glowing with excitement that I actually presented and Gene accepted my gift.

Click To Enlarge Fans On First KISS Kruise Rock All Night To Songs From The Band
From: SunTimes.com

At first glance, the thought of KISS on a cruise ship seems tongue-in-cheek.

But when the first KISS Kruise launched Friday from Miami, it was all business: rocking 'n' rolling all night, wearing black and white face paint, and of course sticking your tongue out just like the wet carpet of KISS bassist Gene Simmons.

It's like being surrounded by 2,000 Venus flytraps.

In full makeup, KISS performed '70s rarities Friday and Saturday in the ship's Palladium theater. The band also played an engaging 90-minute outdoor greatest-hits unplugged set without makeup Friday as the ship left Miami.

They are something to see in the Caribbean sun.

Click To Enlarge Five Vital Business Lessons From KISS
From: Business2Community.com

They arrived on the scene in the mid 1970s and immediately put the fear of God into parents, teachers, and religious leaders. KISS wasn't just a rock band, they were a fire-breathing, devil-worshipping, rock 'n' roll circus. An entire generation fell in love with the band and enlisted in the KISS Army, their parents helpless to stop the mayhem.

Looking back, the fears of our elders were unfounded. KISS turned out to be harmless, and today Gene Simmons is a reality TV star and not a satanic cult leader.

In my new book Brand Like A Rock Star, KISS comes up more than once. In hindsight, the band wasn't just a great rock 'n' roll act. They were also master-marketers!

"YOU WANTED THE BEST, YOU GOT THE BEST.....THE HOTTEST BAND IN THE WORLD....KISS!!!!" were the famous words of the faceless announcer remembered by every teenage KISS fan as they listened to the beginning of the 1977 KISS Alive II album. Faceless no more, Eddie recently became well-known to the thousands of KISS fans pouring into the recent 2011 KISS Expos in Indianapolis, New Jersey and just last Sunday, Chicago. He was known to have the habit of staying up until 4am in hotel lobbies telling his endless and colorful road stories of traveling with the band as a security guard back in the '70s. Initially booked as a B-list guest, he would enter a KISS Expo and quickly made himself the star of the show, making friends and admirers of everyone he met.

Eddie passed away Sunday night in his hotel room the night after the 2011 Chicago KISS Expo. He had been diagnosed with congestive heard failure a couple of years back but specific details are still unknown.

Click To EnlargeRichard Fetingis, who attended Sunday's Chicago KISS Expo with Eddie tells us on Saturday night Eddie "was with a group of KISS fans telling stories and answering questions until the early hours of the morning. I said good-night to him about 7pm Sunday night and headed home. I didn't realize that when he told me he was going to check out in the morning that he was going to check out of this earth. He looked great at the time I shook his hand and said 'see you next week' - and again he was having a lot of fun."

From: LA Weekly

Paul Stanley, rhythm guitarist of KISS, has been rocking the Starchild for nearly 40 years, over which time the group has accumulated 24 gold albums -- more than any other American band. But perhaps even more importantly, in that time he has managed to shave about an hour and a half off of the two hours he once needed to do his makeup. "I don't know that it's much different than the boxers and the UFC fighters before they go in the ring," he says. "They're in the locker room going through their rituals and their paces to get ready to defend their title. Every time we step out onstage, we have a title to live up to."

Stanley spoke to us in conjunction with KISS' efforts for City of Hope, a National Cancer Institute-affiliated organization located just northeast of L.A. dedicated to curing life-threatening diseases. After all, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, y'all. He also spoke about the launching of the KISS "Navy" and why so many other bands are boring.

Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed have made it official!

After 28 years together, the KISS bassist, 62, married his longtime girlfriend in an evening ceremony outside on the crystal lawn at the Beverly Hills hotel on Saturday, their rep confirms to PEOPLE. The couple's guests cheered when Simmons said "I do" to his partner.

Tweed, 54, walked down the aisle in an ivory Priscilla of Boston gown - one of three dresses she chose for the big occasion - and carried a bouquet of ivory garden roses.

The couple exchanged vows they wrote themselves in front of 400 guests including Hugh Hefner, Bill Maher and the KISS members (Paul Stanley was in the wedding party).

Also in attendance were the couple's two children Nick, 22, and Sophie, 19, who was the maid of honor.

And their planned first dance is quite fitting for a couple who have been together for almost three decades: "At Last" by Etta James, to be performed by their daughter Sophie.
