Peter Criss Leaves KISS, Eric Singer Steps In
From: Launch.com via Sean Cowie
(1/31/01, 5 p.m. ET) - "The Cat" is out of the bag: Peter Criss, a founding member of Kiss, has left the group in advance of its farewell trek to Japan and Australia. The drummer and singer is being replaced for the remaining dates by Eric Singer, who was the last drummer before the 1995 reunion for the band's MTV Unplugged and the 1996 reunion tour. In a statement, the remaining trio said, "Eric has been a member of our family, and his drumming and singing have been the cornerstone of past Kiss tours. We are stoked that we can bring our ultimate spectacle to Kiss fans worldwide." Criss's final Kiss show was October 7 at the North Charleston Coliseum in Charleston, South Carolina. Reports that Singer will have his own makeup and costume could not be confirmed. Kiss will play five shows in Japan beginning March 13, before heading to Australia for seven dates that wrap up at Carrara Stadium on the Gold Coast on April 13. A Kiss spokesperson had no further information, but Criss's departure reportedly stems from a falling out with frontmen Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley over financial issues. Ted Nugent, who opened for Kiss throughout North America on the farewell tour, is not surprised the parties have gone their separate ways. "I saw the offers from Japan, Australia, Europe, South America. We're talking another hundred-million dollars for these guys, but quite honestly, Ace and Peter absolutely refused," Nugent told LAUNCH with a laugh, "which is mind-boggling to me. It's like, where else are they gonna make 200,000 bucks a week--apiece? The answer is nowhere." A spokesperson for Ace Frehley denied that the lead guitarist was leaving the group. It's Official - Eric Singer Rejoins KISS!
From: KNAC.com
The KISS Saga Continues: Peter Criss Is Out And Eric Singer Is Back. Well, we confirmed the rumor here first and now it's official: Peter Criss has left KISS and former KISS drummer Eric Singer is back in the fold. KISS online posted this news item today:
"Eric Singer, the last drummer in KISS, has rejoined the band to complete the Farewell World Tour, their celebration of the band's 30-year history. In a joint statement, Ace Frehley, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley said, "Eric has been a member of our family, and his drumming and singing have been the cornerstone of past KISS tours. We are stoked that we can bring our ultimate spectacle to KISS fans worldwide."
This raises an interesting question: Will Singer wear the cat make-up Criss has made famous, since this is a make-up tour, or will he come up with some new look? Singer played in KISS from 1991 to 1996, making his debut on the Revenge album, after stints with Black Sabbath, Badlands and a slew of sessions work. He recently played drums on the Alice Cooper Brutal Planet tour. There has been no statement from Criss as to why he left the group. [Post Your Comments]

KISS Album Focus: "LICK IT UP"
From: KISS ASYLUM & KISSFAQ.COM
Find out the logic behind the releases, what was going on in the band during the recording of albums, what the band was up to in the period leading up to studio time, and lots more information which should be of interest to the diehard fan! Some of the album focus' will use reference material never before available, plus some of the best interviews with the band already available. We are going for accuracy in our attempt to provide a completely clear picture of the status of the band for each release. The "KISS Album Focus" will be your definitive look back on KISS and their albums. Sit back and enjoy your KISStory lesson with KISS ASYLUM & KISSFAQ.COM's "KISS Album Focus."
"Creatures Of The Night did not return the band to the Platinum selling status they required. Nor was Ace Frehley going to return to the band. While sales of Creatures were at least better than the disastrous "Elder", it would still take that poor album over 10 years to attain Gold certification. Yet, as had been the case with Bob Kulick as the stand-in guitarist, once Ace Frehley was officially out of the picture he was allowed to play on KISS albums with his natural style. That same limitation affected Vinnie and the other session players on Creatures Of The Night, leaving the album sounding at least somewhat similar to what an album with Ace Frehley could have sounded like..." KISS Live September 26, 2000 - Trenton, New Jersey
From: Jennifer
KISS Kiss in Trenton?! Being a lifelong New Jersey resident, I was intrigued when I first heard the band would be playing in my home state's capital because I didn't even know a suitable venue existed there! In philosphic Kiss terms (!), Trenton would never be confused with Detroit if you know what I mean. Anyway, this newly discovered local mystery and the opportunity to see one of my favorite bands one last (?) time compelled me to buy tickets. My fiance brought along her camera and her talent to the show and from our vantage point, she was able to capture some great photos (both color and black and white) showing that tertiary market or not, Kiss still put on one hell of a show! KISS Star Takes On "The Will"
From: Inside.com
Is Gene Simmons looking for a little redemption in his latest career move? The former cake-makeup-clad frontman for KISS, along with producer Scott Standorf, has optioned the film rights to The Will (Scribner), by Reed Arvin. In a traditional Hollywood-style pitch, The Will would no doubt be summed up as Grisham with religion. Arvin's novel, his second, has all the makings of a Grisham-style thriller -- the ambitious young lawyer, his mysterious past, the beautiful girlfriend he's in danger of losing -- but with a distinctly Christian bent. Arvin, like Simmons, is a refugee from the music world. But where Simmons is best known for being the face/tongue of '70s rockers KISS, Arvin is a well-known name in the Christian music industry. He spent time as a member of Amy Grant's band and has also been on the scene as a record producer. The high six-figure deal was handled by Jane Dystel and Steve Fisher. [Post Your Comments]

KISS Bassist To Talk About Industry
    From: Apwire via Adam Nierenberg
Pasadena, Calif. (AP) - He used to rock and roll all night and party every day. Now, Gene Simmons is going on television to talk about the ugly side of the music industry. The former KISS bassist will host a one-hour documentary, "The Secret History of Rock 'n' Roll," on Court TV. The program is scheduled to air on June 11. Simmons, 51, said most programs about rock are fluff, and the things he's seen behind the scenes would horrify people. "There are unscrupulous types who affect the music business and affect how and where you hear music and it's important to shed light on that because, just like at home, you shine a flashlight, the cockroaches go scurrying," he said recently. "It's a very, very shady business and you have to have a strong backbone to survive and to come out clean. Along the way, this special will talk a little more about that." [Post Your Comments]

    A Message From Bruce Kulick
    From: Kulick.net
Hello everyone. I hope you all had a great holiday season! I saw lots of friends, ate too much, and got a chance to relax which is rare for me. Spent New Years with friends at Eric Singer's gig with Glamnation. A good time was had by all. Now on to what is new for me.... I am finally mixing AUDIODOG the solo disc that I so urgently wanted to finish last year. So far I am really pleased and by the upcoming NAMM show, it will be all mixed! I am planning to release a Limited Edition 4 song EP first, as I need to figure out who will release the full length disc. There will be a song on the EP that will of course NOT be on the full length, as you will want to have both right??? (Sorry, it makes sense to make them different and then you will have the bonus track from the EP). Not sure which songs will be on which one, but I am so happy to hear my music cranked in the studio. I will have the EP ready for my first event this year, Feb 17th in Indianapolis. The info on this will be coming soon. I will also appear at the New England KISS Expo on March 25th and I will have it there as well. I should be offering the EP on my site, Kulick.net and KISSshop.com as well. As for Grand Funk, we are of course booked on February 2-3 in Traverse City, MI. This is where we have rehearsed and the people who run the casino are so amazing to us. ( And a few of the tribal council, LOVE KISS!!!). We have a date in Florida on the 10 of March, which is in Hallendale. (Close to Ft Lauderdale). There are other dates coming in April, May etc, and of course the summer will be the busiest time for the band. I will make sure to update Kulick.net with info and you can always go to www.grandfunkrailroad.com for info as well. Click over to Kulick.net to read Bruce's full report! [Post Your Comments]

ON SALE NOW! KAOL 3 - The Spirit of '78
    From: Kathy Labonte
KAOL 3 The Spirit of 78 Finally! The last installment of the KAOL CD Series is available for order. So many of you have waited for over a year but I believe we have compiled a package well worth your wait. KAOL = The KISS Army OnLine Tribute CDs you must have in your collection. We began in 1997 and this is our last official release in the series. This is a twin disc set - Audio AND Video discs in one slimline jewel box. As is KAOL tradition, for a limited time you can pre-order this package at a 15% discount. But do it now because it will go back up to full price just before it ships to the public in February. "KAOL 3 - The Spirit of '78" is a monstrous DOUBLE CD audio and visual package that pays tribute to the music from the 1978 KISS solo albums. This is much more than any tribute CD you've ever seen. Bands from all over the world re-created the solo songs and many filmed full blown MTV style music videos to go along with their recordings. 100% OF PROCEEDS IS GIVEN TO THE ALZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION. Ok, so what exactly will you be collecting? Well, there is way too much content to list here so you've got to hit our website to see full details. But here's what I can cram into this newspiece: The audio CD covers 23 solo songs (78 minutes). Included is a cover of the closing track from Paul's album. "Goodbye" is a huge 54 track production with all of the KAOL artists around the world participating in a "We Are The World" style finale. Also - "What's On Your Mind" is sung in Japanese! 21 more great covers you have to hear. The CD Rom holds 40 minutes of video footage. One of these films is a rare look at Gene's 1972 wall calendar showing the handwritten notes on the day of the Wicked Lester recording sessions and the first makeup showcases for Epic. For those of you who remember the Partridge Family version of "Shout It Out Loud" on the KAOL 2 -Creatures of The Net disc, we've got them performing it live at the House Of Blues in LA in full red velvet suits! There's also the closing "Goodbye" music video that must be seen. 6 full length music videos in all, 4 additional behind the scenes segments you'll love. We've also got 3 additional MP3s - songs that couldn't fit on the audio disc. All that just scratches the surface! Come to the website and see full details, full song listing, complete video descriptions, and more. Order the disc now and save money all while giving money to Alzheimer's Disease. See you at the site! [Post Your Comments]www.kissarmyonline.com

A Goodbye Kiss: Gene Simmons Is Never Tongue-Tied.
    From: news.com.au via Andrew David
Gene Gene Simmons, Kiss's hulking bassist, aka the God of Thunder, can't make it to the phone. He's indisposed. He's actually in the dentist chair. Yes, even rock gods have to take care of their oral hygiene. And after decades of fire breathing, blood spurting and housing the longest and most overused tongue in rock, Simmons is pleased to report everything is fine in his mouth. "Dentists don't care if you're the God of Thunder," booms Simmons, explaining his dental delay, "But everything is fine. I've gotten away with murder." He's talking about his teeth, but the death-dodging extends to the 28-year career of Simmons and his pantomime meets circus meets hard rock act Kiss. They're the first to brag about how the critics in the early '70s called them a joke who wouldn't last once their make-up wore off. Today Kiss have become a professional novelty who've outlived most rock bands and turned themselves into a brand name and multi-million-dollar franchise. Their current tour grossed $112.3 million in the US last year, making them the fourth highest money earner on the US live circuit in 2000. [More...] [Post Your Comments]

    10 Questions With Bruce Kulick
    From: Musicanuniversity.com via Brian McKenzie
Bruce Kulick, who mainly earned his reputation as the lead guitarist for KISS, is once again back on the road, this time with 70's greats Grand Funk Railroad (of "American Band" fame). After spending 12 years with KISS, only to get a pink-slip when the Reunion Tour happened, Kulick went on to form a band with former Motley Crue vocalist John Corabi, called Union. With Kulick also putting the finishing touches on his first solo album he is staying quite busy since his exit from KISS. However, in between his studio work and preparing for the Grand Funk Railroad tour,  Bruce was kind enough to answer 10 questions from Musician's University. [Post Your Comments]
