  • (10-27-96) Now What? -- An Update from Bruce & Eric [KISS Karisma Fanzine]

  • KISSNATION -- Hot off the Press!
From: Michael Edwards, (Editor of KISS Karisma Fanzine)
I just received a copy of KISSNATION today. Here's a brief rundown of what to expect... First of all, the cover is NOT the Ken Kelley drawing we saw in the KISS CLASSICS book. That drawing is in a fold-out two-page poster on the inside front cover. The front cover was drawn by Dave Chlystek & Eric Lusk. The comic is divided into three sections, with articles in between. I haven't had time to read it yet, but it does involve the comic book KISS (Paul, Gene, Peter, & Ace) meeting up with what the book calls the "Musical KISS" of Paul, Gene, Bruce, and Eric. The articles themselves are all a bit out-dated, with the most recent stuff coming from the "KISS Unplugged" taping last August. The only mention of the reunion tour at all is in an ad for the YWTBYGTB album, and there is only one small new photo of the reunion line-up on the front cover...none inside. The articles are as follows:

    "On Tour With KISS"
Written by Spiro Papadatos (The Gene from Alive! & Cold Gin) about last year's convention tour. Features several of photos of him and local (female) crew from various conventions, but only few of KISS members.

    "KISS Reunite On MTV"
Article about the "Unplugged" taping with lots of never-before-seen photos from the taping and rehearsals, including a good close-up of Paul's lyrical "Cheat Sheet!"

    "KISS Storms Japan"
Photos and article on Japan '95 tour, mostly of fans in make-up, but also great live shots of Bruce and Gene.

    "The KISS Mannequins"
This is a very interesting piece about the making of the twenty mannequins used on the convention tour. Written by one of the ladies who works at the manufacturer, it includes many "Making of" photos.

    "KISS Boots"
Another cool article, this one's about Mr. Pasquale DiFabrizio, who made all of the KISS boots in the seventies and, while the article doesn't mention it, probably did all of the new ones as well. There are some really neat photos of Mr. DiFabrizio with the molds of each band member's feet that he made and the boxes he kept them in for all of these years. (Vinnie Vincent's box has "Vinnie Cusano" written on it!)

"Bootlegging - The Industry Under The Industry"
While not extremely informative, I found it interesting that the band would include an article on bootleg videos (Complete with a rating system) in an "official" magazine!

    "Cold Gin Distilled"
Gerri Miller's extensive article on the KISS tribute band with lots of photos.

The issue also includes a very well-written "KISS Manifesto," a gallery of fan artwork, and more cartoons/comics that didn't make it into the KISSTORY book. The only ads in the book are the previously mentioned YWTBYGTB ad, the new Paul Stanley Iceman ad, a Gene Punisher ad that has no photos of him, just the guitar and the same handwritten note that was on the flyer, the KISS Army Depot ad (which has no new stuff in it), and the now-manditory KISSTORY ad. Overall, the magazine is impressive, although there are some mistakes (Several articles have missing text), and there is really nothing new. I was at least glad to see that Bruce and Eric are well represented in it and weren't "airbrushed" out of the picture due to the current reunion tour!

  • Rebutal Letter on the Vinnie Vincent post
    From: Doug Cataldo
    Dear Chris,
I can't vouch for what Gene Simmons does but, he has no case as Vinnie owns ALL of the merchandise advertised on his page, the rest of the story printed on your 10/18 news is lies. I am asking nicely that you remove it and print a rebuttal. The facts are that Metaluna Has a secured office on the second floor of a business building. There is a phone line which is ALWAYS answered by Metaluna Voice Mail OR Denise or Mary Beth who are Vinnie's PR associates. The truth about the Philadelphia Convention is that Vinnie was asked to be a guest. The promoter falsely advertised with Vinnie's name BEFORE a contract was signed. When Vinnie gave the promoter his price, he said he couldn't afford it and made demand on Vinnie. Vinnie decided NOT to do the show. END OF STORY. The information you have on your page right now is damaging to Vinnie's career and paints an extremely warped view. Vinnie's lawyers are meeting to discuss these ridiculous accusations, they will find your source and they will attempt to right this wrong. Also Bruce Kulick should refrain from his comments as well as it is a blatant defamation of character and he will be dealt with accordingly. I hope you take me seriously and wiill do the right thing.
    Thank You for your time.

[Aside: The KISS Asylum did not want to start a war of words here. Now there is two views of the story for all to judge. PLEASE do NOT send nasty letters to the Vinnie Vincent Site!! I just want to drop the whole thing!]

  • (10-13-96) Rock icons take fervent fans back to the '70's [Potomac News]

  • Tibits on KISS and Vinnie Vincent

From: A source that wishes to be anonymous but was with KISS backstage recently

"Gene was presented with a copy of the merchandise list that is being offered for sale by the Official Vinnie Vincent web page. He went BALLISTIC! He wrote notes all over the page, and faxed his lawyer the sheet. Vinnie has NO authority to sell the KISS Creatures photo polaroids, and they are definitely going after him for that. He is also selling KISS demos, but because he didn't have a contract with KISS, and he wrote the songs, they can't stop him from selling them. However, the songs that were released, were PUBLISHED by KISS, so Vinnie will have to pay royalties to Gene and Paul for each CD and tape PRESSED (regardless to how many he sells).

  • A Baseball KISS
    From: Sngsmont@arriba.nm.org
"Today,10/12, during the NCLS between St. Louis and Atlanta, the announcers on television, Jack Buck, Tim McCarver, and Chip Carey, were discussing the black stuff athletes paint under their eyes to reflect sunlight. Jack Buck mentioned that if this one particular player on the Cardinals put anymore on, that he'd look like the drummer from KISS. The comment drew a chuckle from the three when Carey added, "His name is Peter Criss." Buck responded, "I knew that." McCarver said, "I didn't." I guess the former catcher has now been properly introduced to the KISS Army!!!"

"Just talked to a friend of mine who is a production assistant for the new Muppet Show. He said that it is not definite yet, but very likely that KISS will do an appearance on the show. He said that taping of the show is scheduled for Nov. 11. He said that The Muppet Show is currently not airing, but is set to start again during mid-season, so the show would not be on until at least Jan. '97. Of course, this is unconfirmed, but I'll keep in touch with him, and let you know if I find out any more."

  • KISS on MTV Latino Update
    From: DTen
"The show was filmed on the Miami Arena. Alfredo the host of "Hora Prima" and the MTV Latino crew were there taping how the KISS stage was build, from 8:00 in the morning untill the show opens. Many footage from MTV News, old videos and interviews where presented during the hour. First of all they were not showing anything new untill the last minutes, just the stage, the crew, equipment and KISS make-up room. They actually let Alfredo go into the make-up room and touch the boots and costumes before the show.
"Hora Prima" began with Simmons yelling "Hola somos KISS y esto es Hora Prima" and then these:

    *News footage from US MTV:

    The Press Conference
Detroit, first show of the tour
MTV Music Video Award RARAN performance
    *Videos
    A World Without Heroes
    I Love It Loud
PIeces of Sure Know Something, I Was Made for Loving You, Love' Em Leave ' Em, Hard Luck Woman from Extreme Close-up Video.
    *Highlights
The Interview with footage of the Miami show
    The Make-up Room
KISS actually walking to the stage in the show
Interview with KISS fans that travelled from South America for the Miami show (wow! lot's of them). They showed a nice KISS Army International logo during the interviews.
*And a surprise: The complete performance of "Do You Love Me" from the Miami show.
*Lot of footage from the Miami Show: Gene spitting blood and fire, Peter drum set raised, Paul breaking the guitar at the end. They didn't show Ace smoking guitar (too bad! ).

I hope someone on Latin America or Miami had the opportunity to watch the show. I'll try to send Asylum some shots with my Snappy next week."

They will appear in a segment called "Hora Prima" conducted by the host of "Headbangers" (MTV for Latin America shows Headbangers, believe it or not!) -> Alfredo. • KISS in new Metal Edge (Jan issue)
It seems like a given that KISS should appear in Metal Edge every month! This month there is a centerfold pict of KISS, and interivew with Gene, Peter and Ace and an article on Bruce and Eric. Some really great stuff here! When it comes on on the news stands (in a few weeks) I highly recomend you pick it up. Here are some of the things discussed in this issue:

*Gene talks about the Bruce and Eric situation and the plans for the Unreleased studio album. [I could not resist....here it is! Enjoy!]

Gerri Miller: What's the status of the finished studio album?
Gene Simmons: Don't know, Legally the only people that can decide that are Polygram becuase we handed it in to the label
G: don't they follow what you want?
GS: No. we can lead them creatively and they avhe to decide
G: But you can suggest strongly what to do and not to do
GS: Sure, we wanted the record out
    G: Before the Reunion though
    GS: Yes
G: It it was up to you whaould it come out at all?
GS: Absoluetly it will be coming out and I can't answer the question when. WI don't know how long this thing is gonna last and it hardly makes sense to release a Bruce and Eric album while Ace and Peter are on tour.
G: But if you are going to be touring until next summer at lest, wouldn't it make more sense to put out an Alive4 or a studio album with Peter and Ace?
GS: A possibility too. All are possibilities. It all depends on what the people involved want to do
G: That could conceivably delay the release of the sutdio album with Bruce and Eric een further. Two or three years down the line, would you want to release that old stuff?
GS: It's not unheard of. It's been done lots. You like it or you don't no matter when it comes out. The reality is some songs might be 10 years old. There's a song called "Childhood's End" on the record that I started writing when I was 14. So what?
G: What's the likelyhood of the unreleased album coming out as part of the boxed set you've talked about?
GS: It's a possibility. So's the possibility that it comes out on its own or as a double album with some Ace and Peter material. There's a possibility of Ace and Peter material coming out first, then that. Or the other way. Anything's possible.

*Gene says no to PPV for now
*Gene says that they did not want to use the "Staircases" on stage so they have more room to walk around
*Gene talks about why KISS picks these "newer" bands as openers.
*Gene briefly talks about possible new stage ideas and tricks
*Gene says he is not interested in doing a CD-ROM....[but Ace has expressed interest!]
*Gene likes the idea of the Internet as far as the idea of having a "forum to talk" but says "I can't imagine anything more boring than to sit in front of a computer and type." "I think the whole Internet is boring as hell." Gene quickly mentions that the Internet people are the minority. Gene likes the idea of Fan KISS web pages versus doing an Official one.
*Ace talks about future new surprised during the Solo like shooting a Rocket out of his guitar and having a light fall and explode on stage.
*Ace also talks about having some Graphics like an exploding Les Paul go on on the video screen while he is doing the Solo.
*Ace says the KISS dropped 2,000 Man becuase the band felt that it was too long being 5 mins and all.
*Ace said that the EARLIEST KISS would do a new studio album would be next fall. He hopes they will do one....he said it was the nest logical step
    *Peter is also interviewed.

    *Bruce and Eric Article
Nothing new here we have not already heard but Bruce is writing with Curt Cuomo (who has written with Paul Stanley on the unreleased KISS studio album) for a new album Bruce hopes to put out next year either by himself or with another group. KISS own's the rights to "I Walk Alone."

I would suggest you pick this up on the news stands when it comes out. Some cool stuff there! I just hit on some of the more interesting topics.
[ED NOTE: Please don't ask me to explain to much more etc via email. I love to answer all your emial but I just don't have the time to do it. I would LOVE to have transcribed this ENTIRE interview but I just don't have the time much less answer tons of emails concerning it. If someone has the new Metal Edge and wants to transcribe it and submit it to The KISS Asylum. We would love to take it!!!]

"A friend of mine just gave me a picture and little article talking about someone I would have never guessed to be a KIss fan. According to the article he was back stage at the St. Pete show, which was held at the Thunderdome on Sept 20. Anyway it was our very own Speaker Of the House, Newt Gingrich. I now have a little respect for Newt, at least for his taste in music. The article was in the Sept. 26- Oct. 2 issue of the Weekly Planet. The article was written by a Noam Chomsky. According to Newt, "I Love Kiss- always have", he went on to endorse Kiss as "good, old fashioned family entertainment."

  • New KISS Studio Album?
    From: Tom Staszewski
"I got word today from my usually reliable sources that KISS will be taking a short hiatus from the road after the new year(Feb-Mar) to bang out a new studio album, them go backout on the road with a new show and costumes. Tentative plans are for an April release. They are going back to the old practice of banging out an album quickly while on the road ala R&R Over. If this ends up being true, this is great. Don't over produce and agonize over a record until it gets too polished, bang it out quickly and leave it raw and live sounding. This should be interesting....."

"I just got home from the show in Atlanta and I wanted to let you in on something you might not have heard about. The show tonight was taped for broadcast in Japan. A guy came out and told us before the show began. He said the usual "make lots of noise" quotes. In additon, Paul made a few references to Tokyo in the show. I'll send reviews of the shows after I see the show tomorrow night. But I will say they were very tight and much more active than I would have guesses from some of the reviews I have read. Of course, this could be because of the taping. My guess is that they will tape tomorrow night and edit the best parts of both shows together. They need to edit a few scenes like Gene singing the same verse in all 3 verses of "God of Thunder!"

    From: Dave Crusan
"Today I was watching a television show on Nickelodeon called "Rocko's Modern Life". If you're not familiar with it, in a nutshell it is a cartoon and the characters are all animals. One of the caracters is a cow named "Heffer". Well, they are all in a bowling alley, and it shows Heffer in a pair of platform shoes, and he says they are the only pair of size 19 that they had, and someone had left them there. Then they pan over to the counter and show the owner: some kind of animal, in a Kiss outfit, and Gene's makeup on! I couldn't believe it! Never would have thought to record it, either, but just goes to show you how far the Kiss phenomenon is reaching. It's about time, too....."
