Perched on a chair at the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, N.J., on Sunday night, a small boy in a black fright wig and silver makeup watched the fireworks. His companion, probably his father, excitedly snapped photographs of the four living wonders onstage: the bassist dressed as a dragon, the singer with the star painted over his eye, the spaceman guitarist and the feline drummer. The boy just stood quietly, taking it all in. This must have been his first Kiss concert, his initiation into the fellowship of rock 'n' roll. As the rock 'n' roll equivalent of Disney, Kiss consciously links the genre's excesses to children's entertainment, safely subsuming rock 'n' roll decadence into spectacle. The camaraderie of music making turns the band into a League of Superheroes whose unleashed primal desires render them cartoonishly powerful. They become "exiles from the human race," as Paul Stanley sang in the title song from the new album, "Psycho Circus" (Mercury), which is also the title of this tour. (The show goes to Nassau Coliseum on Friday.) The bassist, Gene Simmons, means his monster persona to reflect his enthusiastic promiscuousness, but as he flew around the arena in a wire harness he seemed no more sexually threatening than a plastic Godzilla. Ace Frehley's otherworldly image originally invoked drug use, but when the computer-generated rendering of a guitar spacecraft loomed behind him during his longest solo, this now sober guitarist seemed more like an alien on the space opera "Babylon Five" than a stoned Jimi Hendrix acolyte.

3-D KISS-TORY Lesson

SINCE the original Kiss lineup kissed and got made-up again in their twisted Kabuki greasepaint, the '70s schlock 'n' rollers have enjoyed some unbelievable success. Nostalgia aside, the quartet who are stretching their spandex to the max delivered a kicking set Sunday at the Meadowlands that had the Kiss Army standing at attention and saluting every gimmick-laden song. On their "Psycho Circus" tour (which also landed at Madison Square Garden last night), Kiss astutely made the connection between their brand of rock and the big top's gee-whiz style of entertainment. Between the band's superhero costumes, pyrotechnic pageantry and sheer freakiness of the concert, the event smacked of old-fashioned P.T. Barnum values. At any circus, the key to success is the exotic - something you've never seen before, like a demented juggling elephant. At the "Psycho Circus," the Kiss boys delivered their music (from new tunes such as "Into the Void" to the classic crunch of "Rock & Roll All Nite") in 3-D.

This weekend, the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (Doug Flutie's former team) won the Grey Cup. At Tuesday's celebration in downtown Calgary, they blasted "Raise Your Glasses" to the crowd. It was definitely a nice change from the usual Queen songs that would be played.

KISS On WNEW Radio

KISS made a rare tour stop to 102.7FM WNEW radio in New York before their appearance at Madison Square Garden. It was reported on the "Opie & Anthony Show" that KISS received a police escort to the station where they were greeted by a Psycho Circus of fans, jugglers and various side-show freaks amassed outside the station. The band, who appeared sans make-up, took calls on the air from fans. Several fans asked about the laser-pointing incidents at the Meadowlands appearance on Sunday. Paul said: "I invited this idividual to come up on stage to meet me and that I would rectally insert the (laser) pointer so far that he would spit it out his mouth." When a fan named Dominick called and asked if this was the band's last tour, Peter replied: " I think we'd stop touring if one of us died. We're gonna play until we drop. You have nothing to worry about."

KISS Mention On Conan O'Brian Show

On Tues. night on Conan O'Brian, Andy talked about his experience at the Kiss show at the garden.He said it was cool and talked about the 3-D effects. Also Garth Brooks was on plugging his new live alum and while showing different covers of the CD, Conan put one up that had Garth in Gene's make-up and Love Gun costume. It was pretty cool and funny.

"Last nights show in New Jersy was disrupted by a fan with a laser pointer. First, he blinded Peter Criss with it during "Beth", with Peter then telling him where he could shove the laser pointer. Future of PolyGram/Universal Starts To Shape Up

On December 4, 1998, Seagram will officially take over KISS' record company PolyGram from Dutch electronics giant Philips. Seagram, based in Canada, already owns Universal (including MCA Records). As KISS Kollector Online already reported when parties involved were still negotiating the $10,4 billion deal, PolyGram/Universal will continue under the name Universal Music Group and the newly formed company is expected to acquire a 25% marketshare worldwide. KISS at MCI: Forced Bussing

Louder than life, sonically and sartorially, Kiss continued its Kiss 'n' makeup reunion tour by bringing its "Psycho Circus" to MCI Center Thursday night. Packing the most fireworks this side of a Fourth of July on the Mall, the thundering show wisely drew mostly on the band's '70s repertoire and costume closet. The performance, while still over the top, wasn't quite as sharp or delirious as on the band's 1996-1997 tour, the first time Kiss's reunited original lineup had toured in makeup in 15 years. At MCI, the band seemed more workmanlike, as if it had been there, overdone that before. The playing was almost rote 'n' roll, the obligatory drum and guitar showcases mundane, the vocals only occasionally convincing. At times, the roar of the greasepaint was muted with perfunctoriness. Thank Heaven for those old reliable special effects, and, on this tour, the added gimmick of 3-D, proof against the critical notion that Kiss was always a one-dimensional band. Concertgoers were handed paper glasses as they arrived, and subsequently took them off and on over the course of the two-hour show. The effects were great fun but somewhat limited -- how many times did we need to see the neck of Ace "Space-Ace" Frehley's guitar, or the perpetually flickering tongue of bassist Gene "The Demon" Simmons jumping out from the giant video screens? On the other hand, during "Into the Void," one of two new songs from the reunited band's first album in 18 years, Frehley's guitar literally shot off into the MCI rafters and, through 3-D magic, seemed to float through that space and outer space. Later, on the anthemic "Rock and Roll All Nite," the guitar shot rockets into the lighting rig. In fact, flashy fireworks and flaming effects sometimes overwhelmed the music itself.

It was just five days before the start of the band¹s current tour at Dodger Stadium when Ace phoned in from Los Angeles to talk to Prime Choice. Speaking slowly, occasionally almost mumbling, his thoughtful drawl hinted slightly of his native New York accent that was periodically punctuated by his infamous laughter. Recuperating from a bout with bronchitis, Ace approached a myriad of topics ranging from subjects as diverse as his former residence in Wilton, Connecticut, and its adjoining studio, to his fascination with technological advances in the form of computers and space colonization. Naturally, the conversation turned toward the band's latest release, Psycho Circus, and the evolution of his songwriting contribution in the form of a song titled "Into The Void." Surprisingly, much of the conversation delved into subjects of a more personal nature as he candidly addressed his overindulgent reputation. He also spoke openly of his tendency toward premonition and the vision that foretold of the Kiss reunion, as well as a glimpse of his own mortality and his belief in predestination. Similarly, he repeatedly spoke of his daughter with an affection that clearly revealed a sense of fatherly pride.

We Are One is the second single from KISS released here in Australia. Their are two versions, the cheap one which is 2 tracks: 1. We are one 4:41 (Full length), 2. IN your Face 3:35 (Non-LP Bonus Track)
The second we shall call the (lets get the fans to buy both version's single release its titled as 4 tracks but really its 3 plus a video.) Ok here it is: 1. We are one 3:45 (edit), 2. We are one 4:41 (Full Length), 3. Psycho Circus 5:30 (Audio Version) and the forth track is listed as Psycho Circus ENHANCED CD VIDEO plus the same screensaver as the other version.
The covers are identical to the Psycho Circus ones just change the words and the enhanced one features a sticker telling you its special. The cheap one comes in a carboard cover and the enhanced "collector version" comes in a single jewel case.
IN other Australian news it is now official ESP are playing in Melbourne on Thursday the 3rd of December at The Palace Complex (same place of the Unholy Downunder Tour) With openers The Stand Tix from Ticketex and at the door no doubt.

Paul Stanley is interviewed in a four page article in 'Hard Rock Magazine', talking about the new album, the tour, the fans, while 'Hard'N'Heavy' is trying to understand without laughing why Gene's quotes in the three pages interview (with very cool photos of the Psycho Circus puppets) are so... hmmh... 'Genesque' : "KISS is gonna rule the world with a new religion -Kisstianity-", "USA are Mac Donald's & Kiss" and so on... (!!!).
'Rock&Folk' is giving the worst review which can be seen of the Psycho Circus album, saying it's the worst and most ridiculous Kiss album ever.
'Guitarist' ends so its Psycho Circus review : " What best and more could you ask for ?"
The french TV channel M6 will mention KISS in a few minutes report on November 21 (the return of KISS).

"Move On" Good Advice

In this past Sunday's New York Times Magazine columnist William Safire quotes Paul Stanley in his "on language" column. In reference to a quote relating to the Clinton sex scandal in which senator Tom Harkin says "it's in our best interest to put this behind us and move on. Safire writes, In the 1978 song "Move On," by Paul Stanley of Kiss, the singer recalls advice from his mother not to be tied down to more than one woman: "move on, that's what she told me/Move on, mmm yeah/Move on, I'm leavin' on my way."

KISS Mentioned in WWF Magazine

Peter On Cover Of Modern Drummer Magazine

The feature is called KISS...& Tell, and should be a great issue. This is Peter's first appearance on the cover of Modern Drummer in make-up, his last cover appearance was in 1980 when he left Kiss.

KISS In Guitarist Magazine

I saw the new issue of Guitarist magazine today, it was either the Dec or January issue and the cover was on 80's guitarists. This magazine comes with a cd. On the cd as track one is "I Plegde Allegiance - To The State Of Rock and Roll" There is also small mentions of Ace and Paul when they list all the guitarists from the 80's. There may be more but I didn't dig thru it, it lists for $12.95.

I think you - and KISS - know the answer to that one. And you may shout it out loud if you want. You want to forget your lot in life and enjoy this KISS life. You want to scream along to Godzilla bass lines, air-raid guitar licks, and July Fourth indoor fireworks. You want to be part of the endless party. You want to see - feel - fire in a crowded theater. KISS has always been a spectacular escape valve for mainstream rock fans who like it hard and melodic. It worked like this for KISS in the mid-to-late 1970s, the heyday. It works today because today looks and sounds a whole lot like the heyday. They lost two founding band members (drummer Peter Criss and guitarist Ace Frehley) and the makeup in the 1980s. The music took a dive as well, and KISS fell from the grace of the rock gods. Singer-guitarist Paul Stanley and bassist-singer Gene Simmons got the once-substance-abusing-but-now-clean original guys back in 1996 and put the kabuki/horror make-up back on for a ''last'' tour ... that, lo and behold, began anew at the FleetCenter last night and continues tonight. Last night was sold out; a handful of tickets remains for tonight. Top seats are only $55, just 10 percent more than two years ago. Red Sox tickets went up over 30 percent over a comparable time, and KISS's players are both in shape and intact. This tour is called ''Psycho Circus'' and the only hitch is that the explosively inclined circus troupe that was to open the show couldn't fit all its gear into the Fleet and was scrapped. (They may rejoin the tour if the logistics can be figured out.) As for KISS, well, there were plenty of loud noises, fireworks, and blinding lights, Criss's elevating drum riser (for a drum solo on a higher plane?), a fly-to-the-rafters Peter Pan-like by the blood-vomiting bat-lizard Simmons during ''God of Thunder,'' and a standup trapeze glide to the small soundboard stage during ''Love Gun'' for Stanley. Frehley's guitar ''smoked,'' ''shot'' sparks, and flew out of his hands into the sky - his playing was that hot! - and dangled in front of our eyes. This is because we had our special 3-D glasses, which lent the effect of the guitar floating just over us. Other things did this too: a skull, a KISS cube, Simmons's face and ever-flicking froglike tongue.

KISS Spectacle Thrills Boston Fans

Putting most of their similarly aged peers to shame, the not-so-recently re-made-up men in Kiss played for over two hours last night at the FleetCenter, in the first of a two-night stand kicking off the veteran shlock-rock band's tour for their new album, "Psycho Circus." Last year's gimmick? Reunion with makeup. This year's gimmick? New material and a 3-D tour. Predictably, like "Psycho Circus," the 3-D elements of the show were fairly hokey, but there was plenty of spectacle to balance the goofiness of donning paper glasses to view a video of bassist Gene Simmons wagging his tongue. Proving that the 26-year-old New York quartet's sense of showmanship is not diminishing apace with their advancing ages, the show featured a plethora of pyros and sparklers for favorite chugging riff rockers like "Shout it Out Loud," "Calling Dr. Love" and "Detroit Rock City" which sounded surprisingly tighter than last year's reunion gigs. Lights, smoke, sirens and colorful licking flames accompanied "Firehouse." "God of Thunder" featured both Simmons' blood-drenched tongue routine on an overhead platform and a levitating drum riser for Peter Criss. Gifted axeman Ace Frehley did his trademark smoking guitar shtick. And clearly demonstrating that you can take the boy out of Queens but not the queen out of the boy, Paul Stanley worked his behind, his platform shoe-clad strut, his faux Southern shout and his shaggily coiffed mane like a true diva on songs like "King of the Night Time World" and the disco nugget "I Was Made For Lovin' You," before being flown into the center of the arena for his star turn. The hard but melodious industrial pop quintet Econoline Crush opened the show with a brave 30-minute set in the face of some fairly vocal and hostile Kiss army recruits, many made up like their favorite band member.

KISS Mention On Howard Stern

Howard Stern did several minutes on the KISS/Alice Cooper lawsuit this morning. He played parts of "Dreamin" and "Eighteen" and admitted the beginnings of the songs were similar. One of his sidekicks, Fred Norris, said that the beginning riffs are similar but the melody and everything else isn't. Howard also said he didn't even know KISS had a new album out. Howard then took a phone call on the air from a listener that heard a interview with Paul on a Baltimore station yesterday. Apparently, Paul was asked about the lawsuit and said he and Alice were embarrassed by this since they have a good relationship, sort of indicating Alice himself wasn't behind this. Howard then went into a bit about OJ Simpson, and in his best OJ voice he said, "That KISS song made me kill Nicole. KISS wants custody of my kids." Pretty funny.

Cops Eye Suspect In Missing Shelton Mom Case

HARTFORD - Police confirmed Friday that detectives are preparing an arrest warrant for a man they suspect murdered missing Shelton mother and part- time escort Annmarie Cusano. Detectives are gathering circumstantial evidence, hoping to get a judge's signature even though Cusano's body is still missing. The 43-year-old mother of twin teen-agers disappeared from her Park Street home in Shelton Jan. 2. She had been working part time for a Branford-based escort service run by fugitive Gabriel Gladstone. She went to a rooming house on Prospect Avenue to see a client who turned out to be ex-convict Gregory McArthur. Police believe McArthur was the last person to see her alive. Several searches for the woman have not turned up a trace of her. Hartford police Lt. James Blanchette, who is heading the investigation, said Friday police are reviewing the evidence in the case in order to apply for an arrest warrant for McArthur, who is jailed in Boston on an unrelated rape charge. He declined to say what evidence police have to connect McArthur to the crime. Blanchette said police are "moving forward" with the case even though police have not found Cusano's body and do not plan another search unless evidence points to a specific location. "We're compiling and reviewing all of our circumstantial evidence right now and we hope to go for an arrest warrant very soon," said Blanchette.

Econoline Crush Lands Kiss Tour

Canadian rocktronica messiahs Econoline Crush have landed the opening slot on Kiss' Psycho Circus tour, just days after their tour with Gravity Kills collapsed after the funding was pulled by Gravity Kills' record label, TVT Records. According to a source close to Econoline Crush, TVT Records pulled the tour support from the Gravity Kills/ Econoline Crush tour, which played its last date on Nov. 5 in Birmingham, Ala., but was scheduled to run through Nov. 25 in St. Louis. TVT Records had no comment at press time regarding the reasons for the tour's abrupt end. Econoline Crush, who have previously toured with Kiss in Canada, will join the band for 28 dates initially, beginning with the tour's official kickoff Nov. 12 in Boston and ending Dec. 20 in Milwaukee. "It's like Rock 101 and going back to school to learn how it's supposed to be," says Econoline Crush frontman Trevor Hurst, who hasn't forgotten how heartfelt the reception was the last time his band opened for Kiss. "I remember [Kiss' manager] Doc McGhee sat me down afterwards and said, 'You did good, kid! I think you are the only band that has ever opened up for Kiss that hasn't had anything thrown at them!"

Rock monsters Kiss hit the concert trail tomorrow in Boston for the start of a world tour that lead man Gene Simmons tells us will likely go on for two years. The band's "Psycho Circus" show recently debuted at L.A.'s Dodger Stadium to raves. But "we were so busy making sure the technology would work, we had little time to enjoy it," notes Simmons, who at one point in the show flies 55 feet up over the audience, spewing fake blood. "We put millions into the technology of doing 3-D imaging--the kind people are used to seeing in theme parks and IMAX theaters--in a live concert event," he reports. Meanwhile, Simmons is among the producers of the now-filming New Line Cinema "Detroit Rock City"--commonly know the Kiss movie--in which Edward Furlong and Natasha Lyonne ("Slums of Beverly Hills") play fans trying to get to a Kiss concert, "Each is experiencing a personal rite of passage....Along the way, they learn something about themselves," Simmons says. On thing Simmons has learned about himself is that "marriage is out of the question." The unrepetant, politically incorrect rock icon squired the likes of Cher and Diana Ross before linking up with Shannon Tweed, with whom he has two children. So, what's wrong with marriage? "The only problem with marriage is that one of the two people is a man," Gene opines. "We have the eternal urge to merge. And it's not entirely our fault. You women spend enormous amounts of time, effort and money lifting separating, putting on makeup, getting those butts up there....And we red-blooded males are supposed to say, 'Hmm. It's a nice day'?"

KAOL KISS Tribute News

We're hoping to have the new "KAOL - Music From The Folder '99" tribute disc shipped off to our pre-paid customers shortly after Thanksgiving (official release on January 2nd, 1999 for select stores and anyone ordering after Nov. 15th). It is currently at the plant and in the manufacturing process. While we are waiting for it, I thought this would be a great time to highlight one of our performers on this new release. His name is Mark Gray and he has provided KAOL with a memorable performance of "Beth". Mark was a former vocalist with the 70s band Exile. Those that are old enough to remember may recognize him from their hit single "(I Wanna) Kiss You All Over". Mark has since written Top 40 hits for Dolly Parton, Alabama, Tammy Wynette, and several others. He has also written the theme song for a proposed Feed The Children country album which is how he came to appear on KAOL. I was introduced into that project and offered to write some of the song material for the possible FTC album. The idea of the "Beth" remake was offered in return shortly after. Mark had been touring in the southern part of the country and stopped briefly in a small studio in Mississippi to cut the track. With only a keyboard and vocal in this simple arrangement, he quickly turned out one of the more moving versions of the song that I have ever heard. It's just one of many interesting stories behind some of the songs on the new "KAOL Music From The Folder '99". You can check out the MusiCare Online website for full updates and info on the entire series of the KAOL "Cyber Circus" trilogy of discs. If you haven't ordered any yet, check it out! KISS in Goldmine!

Just wanted to drop a line to let everyone know that my recent interviews with Paul, Gene, Ace & Peter are out now in a special Goldmine issue dedicated to KISS. As always, it's a great thrill to chat with the guys. BTW this interview is the longest I've done with the band, about 10,000 words longer than the 1996 cover story. Unlike the last interview which was all-encompassing, this one focuses much more on the present day. There's lots of questions about the new CD, tour, 3-D, merchandise plus some more obscure stuff about the members' early bands and rare songs. Bands like Incubus, The Barracudas, Millemo, Gene as a folk act, etc. You''ll also learn about Gene's meeting with Karen Carpenter of The Carpenters plus there's my review of "The Second Coming" video. I saw a rough cut of the video and was absolutely blown away. Tommy Thayer has done a wonderful job and all Kiss fans owe him a debt of gratitude for this labor of love. It is AMAZING! Anyhow, I better go, my fingers are still aching from transcribing this behemoth of an interview. I hope all the fans dig it!

DiCaprio caught faking a Kiss

Leonardo DiCaprio and pal Lukas Haas turned up Halloween night at the opening exhibit of New York's Tony Shafrazi Gallery. But Leo didn't see much of the bizarre Francis Bacon works. He wore a Kiss mask to disguise his identity but photographers spotted him anyway and gave chase. Meanwhile, the real Kiss was bogged down in L.A. traffic after its Halloween concert at Dodger Stadium. The rockers walked the last six blocks to their hotel in full stage makeup, unnoticed amid costumed revelers on Sunset Boulevard.

KISS Pulls Out Usual Tricks

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Size does matter. At least that's what the members of Kiss would like you to believe. The veteran quartet hammered out a two-hour show at Dodger Stadium which was epic in terms of special effects and gimmickry, though not terribly rewarding in terms of musical impact and scope. The splashy visuals offered during this very pricey production were none too subtle. Fireworks, lasers, smoke bombs, fog machines, klieg lights, elevating drum risers and band members sent flying through the air via cables, all contributed to this sensory-overload extravaganza. The current Kiss tour is also being marketed as a 3D affair. Special glasses dispersed at the door allowed fans to intermittently experience the band members on the giant video screens in the third dimension. These mostly pre-recorded video sequences which were interspersed with shots of the band performing live often found Kiss lamely thrusting guitars and drumsticks toward the audience to maximize the experience. No big deal to say the least, though the first glimpse of Gene Simmons' trademark distended tongue coming at you in 3D did offer a fleeting cheap thrill. Musically, Kiss proved as bombastic as ever as it heavily mined its '70s song catalog. Except for the Peter Criss ballad ``Beth,'' which the drummer sang at the lip of the stage to a pre-recorded piano and orchestral track, every tune featured the band's lumbering hard rock rhythms. The group did offer good escapist fun when it latched onto a tune with a choice melodic or instrumental hook, as it did with ``Black Diamond,'' ``Detroit Rock City'' and ``Psycho Circus,'' the title track of its new album. But most Kiss rockers tend to take on a numbing, monochromatic quality when they're played back-to-back over an extended stretch.

Kiss Raises Curtain On 'Psycho Circus' Tour

The 50,000-plus people who spent Halloween night watching Kiss kick off the Psycho Circus tour with an appropriately intimate performance at a little-used venue -- Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles -- got a little of both, starting with the paper glasses you picked up at the gates in order to experience all the Kiss 3D effects that comprise the main selling point of this post-reunion tour. Aside from a few taped segments involving disassembling skeletons, disembodied heads, and exploding planets, mostly this meant that the four original band members got to poke their various instruments into what seemed like about an arm's length from your face at semi-regular intervals for two hours and 10 minutes. In the meantime, you got the lights, lasers, fireworks, smoke, explosions, sirens, confetti, three giant video screens, three different rising platform bits (everything happens three times), the drum solo, the guitar solo, and all the fire-eating, blood-spitting, unison guitar-wielding routines from when we first saw 'em back in 1975.

Halloween Extravaganza Launches KISS Tour

KISS kicked off its Psycho-Circus tour Oct. 31 with a Halloween extravaganza in Los Angeles that dazzled thousands of fans, many of whom arrived in costume. Circus acts and -- appropriately enough -- the Smashing Pumpkins opened the show, which was touted as the world's first three-dimensional concert. The Pumpkins -- who ascended the stage dressed like the '64 Beatles, complete with bowl-cut wigs and matching suits -- began their set with a cover of "Money (That's What I Want)." After discarding their hair pieces, the band members performed an hourlong set, mixing new material with their hits "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" and "Today." KISS opened with the title track from current release "Psycho Circus" (Mercury); the album is currently No. 75 on The Billboard 200. The two-hour-long set leaned heavily toward early material and included the group's anthem, "Rock And Roll All Nite." The 3D portions of the concert mixed filmed segments with live action; the blend was broadcast via three video screens and viewed by audience members through 3D glasses given out prior to the performance. KISS' Attitude, Antics Haven't Aged a Bit

I wanna come out there and see ya!" shrieked KISS rhythm guitarist Paul Stanley in his best hard-rock falsetto, whipping up the Halloween crowd that nearly filled Dodger Stadium on Saturday. "Can I come out there and see ya? I said, 'Can I come out there and seeeeee ya?' "As fans roared their approval, the 46-year-old "Starchild" (as his costumed KISS persona is known) slipped one silver platform boot into a harness, stood up and launched himself off the stage, gliding above a sea of costumed ghouls and goblins to an elevated landing at midfield. He grabbed a guitar and tore into "Love Gun," prancing in place with his knock-kneed heavy-metal strut, and when it was done, he sailed back through a haze of fake fog to rejoin bandmates Gene Simmons ("the Demon"), Ace Frehley ("Space-Ace") and Peter Criss ("the Catman"). It was one of the more impressive stunts on opening night of the band's "Psycho Circus" tour, a three-ring extravaganza featuring acrobats, motorcycle stunts and sideshow freaks, more than two hours of pyrotechnic rock theater from KISS and--back on stage and better than ever--the Beatles!

KISS Second Coming Home Video News

On Saturday, I received a promo copy of the "Second Coming" home video, which is due out later this month, and I must say this is KISS' best home video yet. It's two hours and is full of behind-the-scenes and rare footage (including plenty of footage of the band without makeup). The narration is done by all four members, as well as MTV's Matt Pinfield (at least someone at MTV gets it). The format is similar to that of Madonna's "Truth or Dare" video. I don't want to spoil it for everyone, but here are some of the highlights: the band puts on the makeup for the first time and gets fitted for costumes at Gene's house; backstage footage from The Grammys (security guards, photographers and even Tupac Shakur are taken aback by the sight of KISS in full makeup and costumes again); rehearsals at an airplane hangar in Van Nuys, Calif. without makeup in street clothes and platform boots (during a full-dress rehearsal at the Van Nuys airport, they set the roof of the hangar on fire during pyrotechnics testing -- shades of the KROQ Weenie Roast show); rehearsals at Cobo Hall days before the Tiger Stadium show; cool backstage footage including their meeting with former manager Bill Aucoin during their four-night stand at Madison Square Garden, pre-show pep talks with manager Doc McGhee; and Ace and Paul doing the "Macarena"; on-stage footage including birthday celebrations for Gene (Los Angeles, CA), Paul (Nagoya, Japan) and Ace (Bismark, ND); autographing a fan's prosthetic leg in Cincinnati, Ohio; and perhaps, my favorite part of video, the guys engaging a big group hug during an encore at their last show at London's Finsbury Park. Ace described the moment by saying, "I walked away feeling very fulfilled." The video ends with the band prepping for its first photo shoot for Psycho Circus and "I Pledge Allegiance to the State of Rock and Roll" plays over the closing credits. I've only scratched the surface as to what is on this video. My hat's off to Tommy Thayer who wrote, directed and produced such a fine piece of work. I'm very critical of KISS' home videos, but this one left me nothing but completely satisfied. All bases from the reunion tour are covered. You really see how much preparation the guys put into making the reunion tour such a huge success and how seriously they took it. I believe all KISS fans will be as pleased as I am.

Classic Kiss Kicks Off Psycho Circus At Dodger Stadium

Kiss kicked off its Psycho Circus tour in classic Kiss style at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles Saturday night. While die-hard followers may have been disappointed that there was little in the way of new material and only a few new gimmicks, most were happy enough with the adage, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." The set list was little changed from the reunited band's reunion tour back in 1996, with just three songs from their new album, and only two or three old tunes not in the 1996 tour. Yet the added songs combined with giant production features made for, if not a new experience, a highly entertaining one. For fans, the show began the moment the stadium was entered, as huge spotlights criss-crossed the skies, and helicopters buzzed overhead, while giant inflatables of the Kiss bandmembers graced the entrance way. Following a strong set by opening act The Smashing Pumpkins, the crowd was entertained by a circus troupe that featured highwire acts and sideshow oddities. Those performances took place at the back half of the stadium floor. As the original lords of pyrotechnics and gore, Kiss didn't disappoint. As usual they opened their performance with a bang and kept it up with a steady stream of explosives, flames, fireworks, rising platforms, a flying Paul Stanley and a blood-spewing Gene Simmons.

KISS On MAD TV

Since those of us in Canada get the advantage of seeing MAD TV a day before those of you in the US, I thought I would let people know what to expect. KISS appears during the show's intro with "The Vancome Lady" played by Nicole Sullivan. Of course, the band cajoles her into going backstage with them as Gene's tongue waggles at her. Not much there. One of the best moments is the sketch where KISS appears as life-size action figures. They stomp on a kid's soldiers and in their robotic state, are seen in bed with kid. Then the mother comes in and says she wants to "borrow" Paul for the evening while "daddy's away on business". This was probably my favorite skit the band appears in. Later on, they show up as a young girl's prom date (yes, all 4 of them are her date!). While the Dad shows his obvious concern, KISS puts him in his place and not only leaves with the daughter but takes the wife and the grandmother too! Funny stuff. In another ongoing skit, the band takes on Michael Jackson who has been offing members of the cast appearing as musicians so he will again be popular. In a scene reminiscent of the Phantom of the Park battle sequence, Michael tries to take out KISS by moonwalking and grabbing his crotch, then letting his army of little boys attack the band. While the 4 youngsters grapple with the band, Paul anounces a "transfer" and the kids turn around showing their faces painted like each member of KISS and they turn on Michael Jackson. Of course, KISS prevails as MJ's head is exploded by lasers emanating from the band's guitars. Campy fun, I guess. Another short skit sees the band standing on stage holding small pumpkin heads that kids put their Halloween booty into. Paul gets a Hershey bar, Gene gets a grape candy, Ace gets a popcorn ball and Peter pulls out a rock which he bites into. Lame skit but it's just KISS without any distractions so you can see a closeup of the band's faces and outfits. I should mention that Ace looks terribly bad close-up under the studio lights as his face has more creases than ever. His face looks like a rural road map! In the magazine shoots as of late, he's looked pretty good but I guess the airbrushing artists have been pulling some serious overtime! Otherwise, the band looks good in the first mass public appearance since the reunion tour ended. Overall, the band doesn't embarass themselves at all. They do a good job in the capacity they are given and produce a generally funny show. Check it out tonight on FOX.
