    From: Charlie Reussner
Was watching a new trivia game show on the "Lifetime" cable network tonight called "Dept". On the show one of the topics the contestants had to pick from was "Men who wear makeup" the question was "Performed by those hard rockin', grease-painted "Destroyers", KISS i'm drummer Peter Criss' "girl-named" balled that ironically became their biggest hit. The guy answered the question correct (Beth).

  • KISS sighting
    From: Keith Pinel
A couple of days ago a friend of mine was at work at the Calgary International Airport. He was on a break and went to get something to eat in one of the food outlets. He glanced over to realize that Gene with G/F Shanon Tweed and his two children were sitting there eating lunch. Of course he went over to say hello and to get an autograph. He asked Gene where he just came from, he said that Gene told him, "I can't tell you that", with a smile. Apparently Gene and family were on an unexpected layover and he had said that he loves Calgary. Just some small talk after that and the momentous occasion was over. My friend did get his autograph.

  • KISS in German Magazines
    From: Jeurn of KISS Kollector
Just had a look at german mag "MusikExpress/Sounds", which has KISS twice in it's actual issue.
First they made an inquiry where they´ve shown photoprints to anybody on the streets, asking whether he/she knows who´s on the print. 100% of the people knew Mr. Spock from StarTrek, 82% knew KISS and also Spice Girls with 82%. Other votes came up around 76%, so KISS is well known to german people (who the hell are the Spice Girls and how will they be known in, let´s say 24 years...)
Second was the annual poll which has KISS on top 5 as "best live act 1996" as well as on top 5 as "biggest disappointment 1996"
Please note that KISS is definately not the most loved band at "MusikExpress" (like at Rolling Stone Mag in the US. The last time they have had a major article on them before the reunion was in 1983 (!) when the band took the make-up off)

  • Ace's "12 Picks"

  • The Bat Lizard Strikes Again
    From: sngsmont@arriba.nm.org
Tonight, 2/22, on Dick Clark's show, "Blooper," he was talking with Drew Carey about some of the bloopers that have occurred on that show. They showed one scene where Carey was sitting on a sofa with a this huge iguana. As Carey was trying to say his lines, the big lizard climbed up on Carey's lap and it's long tongue started attacking Carey on the face, much the way Gene does with Ace during the performance of Black Diamond. After the clip was over, Carey commented, "It's like working with Gene Simmons of Kiss," to which Clark responded with a loud chuckle. As a Kiss fan from the very beginning, it sure is nice to see the greatest band in the world getting the recognition it so deserves.

  • Gene in New article
    From: Matt & Jen
I recieved my new issue of Electronic Musician a week or so ago & Gene is in an article about vintage bass amps..There is also a half page picture. With all the tech mags using KISS as an example these days I'm beginning to realize quite a bit of the "KISS generation"(70's)are grown up now & making the editing decisions at the TOP positions in the media. This is very notable because the critics in the KISS' heyday were,as you probably well know, were very facetious & were stingy to give praise to them. Now,it seems, we are feeling the true IMPACT of the early KISS experience on our nation.

  • Domino KISS info Hotline
    From: TonyinJC@aol.com
I don't know if you are aware of the Domino KISS info Hotline. The number is 773-509-8010. It is updated usually once a week or when there is big news. I called it yesterday and found out some cool info. Have you ever seen those old horror movie figures that you have to paint yourself? They usually range from $75.00 and up. According to the Domino Hotline there are some new figures modeled after KISS that you can order now. They each are modeled after the Destroyer album cover and they all connect just like the picture on the album. They each are $125.00. The name of the company is called "Puff N Stuff". You can order them by calling 412-523-8444. It also goes on to say that the person who created the original mold for the figures has committed suicide a few weeks ago. :( I don't know how long they will be available.

  • KISS News
From: Gerri Miller of Metal Edge Magazine
Spoke to Peter Criss today. He's still a bit out of whack from post-Australia jet lag but was in great spirits, and planned to spend the weeks off with his daughter and girlfriend (they're driving up the coast). He's looking forward to working on songs for the studio record and touring again once it's released.
In other KISS news, it now appears we will be combining the special I've been working on with the full-format KISSNATION and comic book, to make one magazine of 200+ pages. Still out early Apr.

(KA Note: I spoke with Gerri Yesterday and she told me the NEW KISS Special magazine has been pushed back to an April 8th release)

KISS is back from Australia, so I went to see a quite jetlagged Gene today to get some updates and go over materials for the special. The Visa Card is definitely happening and there may be a Nintendo game by summer.

Here's some of them: Selected fresh vegetables, fresh fruit (for 12 persons), French Mustard, Tuna salad with egg, Parmesan Cheese (imported), 6 cakes (chocolate & rice), 8 lemons, 30 packs of sugar, 1 coffeemaker, 6 lts of Gatorade, 1 lt of Apple juice (natural), 4 lts of fat free milk.......and the list goes on.

  • KISS Ban?
    From: Blade9175 viaThe Associated Press
WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) - Fresh off a protest of shock rockers Marilyn Manson, a pro-family group has a new target: Kiss, the fire-breathing, blood-spitting rockers of the '70s.
The American Family Association, which sponsored an alternative event during last week's sold-out Manson show, plans to do the same thing when Kiss performs in Wheeling on March 27, member Kathleen O'Connor said.
"It is our opinion that Kiss is very similar to Marilyn Manson and we must respond similarly," Ms. O'Connor said.
Both groups wear makeup, but Marilyn Manson has been accused of having violent and Satanic overtones. In just the past month, people have protested against the band, which hit the charts last year with its album "AntiChrist Superstar," in Nebraska, Texas and Massachusetts.
Marilyn Manson sold out the Wheeling Civic Center, while 75 people protested outside and 250 others attended a prayer service that coincided with the show.
Civic center manager Denny Magruder said he expects another sellout for Kiss, and less protesters.
"A lot of people hear the name Kiss and just react. They don't even know what kind of music they play," he said. "I don't expect anything like the public outcry we heard regarding Marilyn Manson."

  • Meeting with Anton
    From: John Ferrara
I was blessed with three events in the past couple weeks. First, my girlfiend accepted my marriage proposal. Second, due to this proposal a cousin gave me an engagement present - two tickets for Late Show with David Letterman's Video Special 3 which will be shown Monday, Feb. 24 at 10:00 p.m. EST. Third, due to these prior circumstances I was fortunate enough to meet Anton Fig - KISS alumni and drummer in Paul Schaffer's World's Most Dangerous Band. For those who don't know Anton played on Ace's 1978 solo album, Frehley's Comet's albums and is supposedly the beat behind KISS' "Unmasked" album. Anton and the band played great during the show and the commercial breaks. Most notabe was their version of Green Day's "Basketcase" which sounded like a cross between Green Day and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. I was again lucky enough to watch to show from the front row, which allowed me to approach Anton after the show. Anton was extremely cordially and even allowed my girlfriend to break Late Show rules and take a picture in the theater. Anton said he still keeps in touch with Ace and hopes to get together with him when they returned from Australia. He signed my ticket and commented that he had gone a long time since a Frehley's Comet fan approached him at the Letterman Show, and I was the second in two nights. As I walked out of the Ed Sullivan theater I realized I had forgotten to ask him if he had played on "Unmasked" - too bad I wonder what he would have said. Anyway, Anton Fig is a genuinely nice man, and I thank him for adding another memory to my night in the New York Groove.

Go here to read a Paul Stanley interview from Guitar Player from 1979.

  • KISS Underground news
    From: Scott Villardi
This is in the Going Underground section of March 1997's ICE Magazine:
"Live concert recordings may be the backbone of the bootleg world, but lost studio albums are what really send collectors' hearts racing. 'Carnival of Souls' is the album the KISS line-up of Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer completed before last year's reunion tour brought original members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss back in the fold. Kulick and Singer have now left the band, resulting in 'Carnival of Souls' being shelved. Of course, that hasn't stopped tape copies from leaking out. The most complete CD to surface thus far is Shriveled Fanny Productions' mistitled 'Carnival of Lost Souls', which offers 11 songs in good quality. (Collectors are still hoping a rumored supeerior-sounding 13 track version will surface on disc.) At least three other inferior 'Carnival of Souls' discs exist, including the nine-song 'Rock Diamond'. Speaking of the reunion tour, the 1996 audience recordings which have turned up on CD so far are uniformly dreadful. Live! Music Review describes Red Sun's double St. Louis Rocks and Rolls All Night (7-14-96) as a "distant sounding recording with incredible amounts of audience screaming." Kobra's 'Masked Again' and New World Order's 'Return of the Larger Than Life' (both from Irvine, CA 6-15-96) are slightly better, but the same description applies. Given the audience enthusiam at recent KISS shows, some are wondering if a high-quality audience recording even exists. Regardless, LMD's new double CD 'Rock Hard Again' (Pittsburgh 7-21-96) is said to be easily the best release to date. Another double 'Alive at Wemley Arena' (London 11-25-96), is also rumored to offer better sound than its predecessors" .....AND...... "Also new from Kiss The Stone: 'KISS Unplugged' (unedited 1995 MTV Unplugged set; two CDs)"

It is an eighty page book, with lots of colour photo's, most of them have been seen before, but there are a couple of rarities. Most of the photo's are make up shots and the text is mainly interview quotes. It's a lot better than Kiss Live and is a little more accurate, is anybody would like to trade video's or other mags and books please e-mail me.

In the NCAA Div-1 basketball circles .... one venue which opposing teams dread to play in is DUKE's Cameron Indoor Stadim; the home of the DUKE Blue Devils. Last night was no exception. The fans are accostumed to painting themselves up in Blue/White designs ... suppoirting their beloved Blue Devils. Last night marked a new era for the "crazies" @ Cameron Indoor Stadium. There were NUMEROUS LONG camera shots of (4) Duke Fans; in Coats/Ties; Dawning our beloved GENE, PAUL, PETER, & ACE ...... the only notable difference was the designs were done in Duke Blue. Also numerous comments were made about the dedicated fans .......... Of course DUKE won!

Did anyone see Jay Leno last night when he was talking about the latest poll done to see who people would most like to see on Mount Rushmore if it was redone. The real poll results had Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy, Mother Teresa and Franklin D. Roosevelt as the 4 most popular. Well Jay brought it up and then said "and here are the results" and then showed a picture of Mount Rushmore with Gene, Paul, Ace and Peter's make up faces painted over top of each head! Pretty cool...

  • Casper and the Ghostly Trio!
From: Jerry Songy from KISSin' Time Audio Video
Just looked through the TV Focas and they have a little write up on this Saturday's episode of Casper! They also had a picture of Casper and other ghost flying around looking at a cartoon Gene with his tongue sticking out playing his guitar! You can see in the background a poster of the band. But the name written was HISS. The header and the writting goes like this. "'Scavenger Haunt' - Casper - Casper and the ghostly Trio rock backstage with the group HISS when they team up for a scavenger hunt in Saturday's episode." I think this is pretty cool that a Saturday morning cartton is taking the KISS image and making a 30 minute story.

  • KISS in Time Magazine
    From: Rudy Lopez
That's right, Kiss is in the February 24, 1997 issue of Time magazine. On page 77, there is a cool picture of the new kiss dolls with a small story discussing new toys announced in the AIT Fair. It reads "Regular or Kiss Army?" "In the plastic paantheon of action figures, there's Barbie, Ken, GI Joe and now...IKE? And KISS? The new dolls were introduced at last week's American International Toy Fair, along with several thousand other playthings, including a Barney that will talk back to you and acres of movie themed gimcracks. Aren't Kiss fans getting a little old to be playing with dolls? Apparently not. "[Lead singer] Gene Simmons contacted us," says Bob LoMonaco, senior vice president of sales for Todd McFarlane, which makes the Kiss dolls. "This is the first celebrity doll we've made, but there has been a lot of interest." Each KLiss member will retail for about $7.99. hasbro's General Eisenhower, as befits his station, will be a little pricier, at $49.99...

  • New KISS Book: KISS & Sell
    From: KNN Newsfeed
Billboard Books releases an eyewitness account of the rise and decline of the 70's most provocative rock band.

Chicago, IL (2/24/97) KISS &; SELL: The Making of a Supergroup is the result of author's C.K. Lendt's twelve years on the road with the enigmatic rock group known simply as KISS. This tell-all offers a behind-the-painted faces look at the lifestyles and indulgences of the 70's wildest rock band, describing in graphic detail the on-the-road antics of Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley -- who never met a groupie they didn't like -- and Peter Criss and Ace Frehley -- whose hard drinking and drugging lifestyles eventually cost them their places on the KISS roster.

Fresh out of grad school at USC in 1974, Lendt's first assignment was to represent KISS on the road. When Lendt landed the job by replying to an ad in the 'Help Wanted' section on the New York Times he had no idea he was about to be initiated into the legendary underworld of sex, drugs and rock and roll. From New York to Los Angeles, Australia to Italy, Lendt remained a constant presence, as his relationship grew from business escort to friend, ally and sometimes co-hort.

Throughout the book, Lendt's cool approach to unbelievable -- yet true -- tales of day-today chaos brought on by these four rock stars offers the reader an usually candid insight into their eccentric lifestyles. Lendt also spares no details regarding the extravagant spending habits of a band that went from being Super KISS to super broke in less than a decade.

The undiluted perspective within these pages makes KISS & SELL: The Making of a Supergroup a dream-read for anyone seeking more than a glimpse into the decadent world of rock and roll.

A bit of rumor for you, although I'm not much into that sort of thing. A friend in Australia was talking with a friend who works for Polygram down there about the band signing autographs. They did very little of it down there. The Polygram rep had gone with the band to a radio station interview in Adelaide and had asked the members of the band to sign some posters and albums for give-aways. They were given back to her, but with one member's signature deliberatly left off each item (as mentioned to me, no real pattern, just one member's signature off of each). When asked why this was, Gene apologized but explained that a full set of autographs from the band is worth a lot of money and there was no way that the band would ever sign a full set again on his orders.

  • KISS Rumor Control
Recently there was a post on AOL that talked about a few things KISS was going to do in the Future. I asked Gerri Miller to comment on this post and here is what she said
*The AOL post stated"Ace Frehley's "12 Picks" album got delayed"
Gerri said "it will be out on 4/1."

    * The AOL post stated"'Carnival Of Souls' will not be released on it's own. It will be in the box set (due out this Christmas). The next album will be "Alive 4" and then a new studio album called 'You Wanna Rock And Roll'"
Gerri said "have to ask them this (they're back tomorrow). Last I asked they said a studio album (no title) would be next thing out after Greatest KISS

*The AOL post stated "KISSNation is no longer in print"
Gerri said "true. The proper, expanded version will be out this spring"

    * The AOL post stated "The new KISS action figures (as part of the X-Men series) will be out in April"
Gerri said, "no, more like June/July"

    From: Steve Corral
Just came back from Tower Records. The new issue of "Vintage Guitar" has a great interview with Paul and Ace about guitars and amps past and present. Ace has a particularly entertaining story about a fan that was trespassing on his property in the 70's. The magazine is a tabloid sized newsprint magazine and is carried at Tower Records and Barnes and Noble book stores.

I woke up to a phone call from Australia today--Paul Stanley, who couldn't go to sleep after the show (it was 4 AM Wed. at the time). We chatted for a while about how it was going there--there have been a couple of glitches, like the cherry picker he and Ace were on got stuck for a few minutes one night, and another where Gene started to 'fly' and got three inches off the ground. I'll have more once I transcribe it.

  • New KISS Book
    From: John Libenguth
Just saw an ad for a new KISS book in the most recent issue of "PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY" The book is called "KISS AND SELL, THE MAKING OF A SUPERGROUP". This is unauthorized and written by C.K. Lendt. The description is as follows...

"There's never been a band like KISS before
-and there's never been a book like this!

KISS is back -in the biggest way ever. By the end of the band's two-year world tour in December, 1997, it's expected they'll have netted over $150 million. Packed to the rafters, KISS concerts aren't just attended by kids but also by an army of fans who remember the band from the 70's and 80's. Such is the extraordinary potential for this compelling and fascinating book.
Here's the piercing backstage picture of the convergence of hard rock and big business. Written by the representative of the band's former business managers, who traveled the world with them from 1976 to 1988, this is the tell-all account of how images are built, money is made, and profits are spent. It's an unauthorized look at the lifestyles and indulgences, of power brokers and exploding egos. It's a vastly entertaining story, rich in detail and multi-dimensioned. And just as KISS has become music's hottest ticket, KISS AND SELL is sure to be in constant demand by an audience measured in the millions."
352 pages. 32 black and white photos. Out in April

I was flipping channels last night and came across "The Single Guy" on NBC. There was a seen between this guy and his wife who was complaining about his "junk" room in their apartment. She wanted him to get rid of all his stuff he has been collecting over the years.
Well, right behind them was a KISS Destroyer wall poster! The two actors were positioned so that you could see the poster clearly and unobstructed! They kept cutting away to shots of the junk room and them talking by the poster! It was neat; however they did not reference the poster. I would say it was up 20-30 seconds.

  • "Elder Play" News Update
    From: The Elder Crew
There are a few things happening around here at the moment. Number one is a possible tour. We are currently looking into performing at the Performing Arts Center in Nashville. We are waiting to hear back from the operations director but at the moment that is our best hope. One thing holding us back is a lack of funding. We are currently seeking out sponsors and other people for donations. This is all just a possiblity at this time and nothing is for sure.
The other thing is that the cd should be mastered, pressed, and back in our hands by early March. That is if all goes well from now 'til then. We'll be keeping our fingers crossed and we'll be sure to keep you informed.
We are also scheduled to appear in the next issue of Firehouse Magazine. We have been in contact with Ronn Roxburgh, editor of the magazine, and sent him info on the show, some pictures, and even some T-shirts to be given away in an issue coming up.

  • New KISS Action Figure Photographs!

  • "You Wanted the Best, You Got the Best!"
KISS Action Figures by McFarlane Toys
American International Toy Fair - New York
From: Puppyo@aol.com and Todd McFarlane Productions, Inc.

    For Immediate Release
    January 30, 1997
McFarlane Toys celebrates their production of KISS action figures with a multi-media extravaganza at this year's American International Toy Fair in New York City from February 10th through the 14th.

By recreating a concert setting and displaying KISS mannequins seen only at KISS conventions and a limited number of press conferences, McFarlane Toys will move visitors through uniquely created, interactive environments capturing the feel of their incredible 1997 toy line-up. These one-of-a-kind mannequins, designed to band members' specifications, are dressed in the original 1970's KISS costumes and include concert-used guitars. This area will showcase KISS memorabilia, including gold records, spanning the band's extensive rock history, and an exclusive KISS video of concert footage and "behind-the-scenes" meetings between KISS and Todd McFarlane, the creator and entertainment renegade of McFarlane Toys.

Emerging from the biggest tour of 1996, the KISS action figures are scheduled for a Summer launch. These 6 inch tall figures of Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss are intricately detailed complete with authentic KISS black-and-white makeup, platform boots, and flamboyant clothing. Individually packaged on blister cards, each KISS figure comes with at least 2 accessories including items such as guitars, drums, staffs, and stands. Breaking all records in attendance and merchandising alike, the KISS Alive Worldwide Tour continues through 1997 and returns to the US to coincide with McFarlane Toys' release of the KISS action figures.

Having sold over 80 million albums worldwide, KISS has earned the most gold, platinum and multi-platinum albums only surpassed by The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Chicago. Recently ranked 29 of Forbes Top 40 Entertainers of 1996, concert ticket sales for KISS' current tour will exceed $100 million. With 27 albums released since 1972, KISS continues to dominate the rock scene and sold over 350,000 concert tickets on the first day of sale.

Todd McFarlane's relationship with KISS extends beyond the production of KISS action figures. McFarlane's phenomenally successful character Spawn, from America's best selling comic book for 4 years running, hits screens nationwide this Summer with New Line Cinema's release of Spawn: The Movie starring Martin Sheen and John Leguizamo. KISS is currently discussing with New Line Cinema the possibility of releasing their first new song in over 15 years with the original band members on the Spawn: The Movie soundtrack. After 10 years in the business, McFarlane remains the most popular artist in the comic book industry, and this June, McFarlane will launch a completely new KISS comic book the likes of which has never been seen before.

McFarlane Toys storms 1997 by launching 8 separate action figure lines including 2 assortments from Spawn: The Movie, the most authentic movie toys this summer. Celebrating the wide release of Spawn: the Movie, McFarlane Toys creates a full-blown theater atmosphere. Visitors will see never-before seen footage from this live-action thriller and come face-to-face with original movie props and costumes.

McFarlane Toys, we strive to be the best! Showroom: 1107 Broadway, Suite 714, New York, NY 10010.

  • KISS Action Figure News!!
    From: Puppyo
Hey... just got a press release regarding the KISS dolls, which I followed up with a few phone calls. They are expected to hit stores by late June/early July, and will NOT feature different costumes (as originally rumored). They are 6 1/2 inches tall, and will NOT have 'clothing' like the original dolls (they're being billed as 'action figures,' which means that their costumes will be painted on). The first run of dolls will come with stands that spell out KISS (each doll has one letter on their stand), and each doll comes with at least 2 accessories (including guitars, drums staffs and stands). They will be packaged on blister cards (cardboard backs with form-fitting clear plastic cover). McFarlane Toys is still in discussion with management regarding whether the figures will be available at concerts, but because the dolls aren't coming out until at least late June, it seems pretty unlikely (that's my opinion). The coolest thing is that the prototypes will be unveiled next week at the Toy Fair in NYC, and will be housed in a CONCERT SETTING featuring the Konvention mannequins! How cool is that? Also, Todd McFarlane is in negotiations with (the original lineup of) the band to let him use THEIR FIRST NEW SONG IN OVER 15 YEARS on the soundtrack to his film, "Spawn: The Movie," which is scheduled for a summer release. Yee hah.

Gene Simmons called from Brisbane, Australia. As we were talking he kept having to answer the door, it seems every maid in the place wanted an excuse to tidy something up and get an autograph. The shows have been going very well, despite a couple problems--he lost his voice in Osaka and Ace and Paul had to fill in, and he couldn't do his flying in Hiroshima since the venue ceiling was too low. The Brisbane show is the first of the Australian ones. Then after, as he put it, "3 Melbournes, 2 Sydneys, 2 Perths...and a partridge in a pear tree." That's Gene. They've already sent me some photos and signed posters from Japan to use and I should be getting more goodies in the next few days.
