KISS Mention in BMG & Columbia Music
From: MWilly
BMG this month has another Kiss section with merchandise including Kiss Wine (non etched) for $19.99, cd holder, figures, mouse pad, tie and the chain link Kiss watch. This watch is appearing for the second time and by far is the best Kiss watch available. I have not seen it anywhere else.
Also Columbia Music has a couple of items. They have the pocket watch with the Kiss Army logo and the rotating clock with the red letter logo. Most of these items have been available elsewhere cheaper, but here is another outlet to look at them. Most of all its great to see Kiss stuff still getting attention in these publications.

Interviews have already begun on the third BLACK DIAMOND book, and several individuals have already agreed to do interviews for the book within the next few months!
HOWEVER, we are still in search of a few individuals that we would love to talk to on-the-record about their career and their times with KISS. This is where you can help make BD3 the biggest BD of them all! We are looking to get in touch with the following individuals for interviews:

  • Vini Poncia
  • Michael James Jackson
  • Ron Nevison
  • Toby Wright
  • Desmond Child
  • Bill Aucoin
  • Anton Fig
  • Eddie Kannon
  • Joyce Bogart

Our objective is to allow fans to get a better understanding of the people who helped shaped KISS over the years, and we would like to cover each person's career and their involvement in music. If you know of how these individuals can be contacted, please send an e-mail to Dale Sherman at: justabob@iglou.com or write to the following address:

    KISS Mentioned In Maxim Magazine
    From: Peter Yazvac
In the April issue of Maxim Magazine (a new men's publication), there's an interesting story about KISS (page 135). Its entitled "KISS: The Lost Members". The idea is to look back at the "replacement players", now that the orginial band is back together. While they forget to include Eric Singer, the story mentions evyerone else. After each person's name, there is three colums (Claim To Fame, Proof of Suffering, Kiss of Fate).

Gene's Comments in Hard Force magazine
    From: Tristan
Hi, here is some news from Europe, from a French magazine called "Hard Force"--April 1998 (3 pages about KISS -- Gene Simmons interview).

  • About "Psycho Circus" (the album) : "It is 70% recorded. The mastering begins at the end of March....better later than never. It is a mix of "Revenge" and "Destroyer," a classical Kiss album." Bruce Fairbain is the producer. Bob Ezrin co-wrote a song with Paul. He was always right and left to help us. On some songs, we sing each member a verse or a part of the song."
  • About Ace and Peter : "Ace and Peter are clean now. They're more lively. They're not switched on anymore. When you're clean, you know what you do. Imagine the difference between driving with or without alcohol in your veins. "And musically it's almost the same. It was the only condition to join again the band."
  • About merchandising : "There's gonna be a Kiss sportcar 75'000 dollars worth."
  • About an "Alive IV" : "It is possible, yes, but it is not confirmed."
  • About putting on the make-up again : "When I'm in my character on stage, I'm a god. It's cool to be Superman."

Police To Step Up Search For Shelton Woman
    From: New Haven Register
[By Joanne M. Pelton of the New Haven Register]
It's been almost three months since Annmarie Cusano disappeared in Hartford, and police plan to revitalize efforts to solve the case. Detective Sgt. Joseph Kudrak, who is now heading up the investigation, said the chances that Cusano is alive are slim. No new leads have emerged, he said. Kudrak, who was appointed to head the detective bureau a few weeks ago, said he will call a meeting with Hartford police within the next two weeks to go over the case. "We'll call a meeting to go over what we know about the case and go over strategy to try to solve this," said Kudrak.

KISS In March 21 TV Guide
    From: Craig Johnson
From the March 21, 1998 TV Guide Online Print Edition (Cheers and Jeers column):
CHEERS to rock & roll heaven. We're intrigued by VH1's upcoming five-part special, The 100 Greatest Artists of Rock and Roll (March 31-April 4), because it involves musicians voting for other musicians. The channel sent out ballots to every artist whose music has ever been played on VH1. The only stipulation was that they could not vote for themselves. Apparently Gene Simmons and the boys in Kiss ignored this rule: They made it onto the list at No. 67. (We're not sure how else to account for their inclusion.) For the most part, the 100 chosen ones are deserving, but we do have a few bones to pick: Madonna, the Byrds, Devo and T. Rex make it but Jefferson Airplane, the Doobie Brothers, Grand Funk and Procol Harum don't? And how could you enshrine the 100 greatest rockers and leave off Jerry Lee Lewis? Hell's bells, the Killer would be in our top 5!

I have good and bad news. The bad news is that KAOL 2 which was supposed to be released in late February and then again in early March is still delayed due to errors made by the manufacturer of the discs. I'm confident that it WILL be released sometime in the week of the 16th. That's only a few more days so I hope everyone can be patient. I know a lot of you have faithfully pre-ordered your copy and are eagerly awaiting it's arrival. Rest assured, the wait is almost over.

Gene Comments on the Psycho Circus Rumors
    From: Gerri Miller via sundevil10@hotmail.com
I spoke to Gene today and read him the same thing you read
    1. Psycho Circus is one of the most disjointed efforts in KISS's history (very similar to "Unmasked")--he says not true
    2. In fighting is at an all time high--he says not true
    3. One HORRIBLE rumour states that Gene and Paul have said 'NO' to EVERY song Ace and Peter have submitted for inclusion on the album.--he says a lot of their (G&P) songs have been rejected also by the producer and what will be on the album isn't decided yet
    4. Peter submitted a ballad entitled (ironically) "Together", co-written by Tommy Thayer. This has been scrapped (According to this source), and Peter has (apparently) been told not to bother writing any new material.--this song won't be on but Gene says the second part isn't true
    5. All three of Ace's contributions (Life & Liberty, You Make Me Hard and Shooter) have been scrapped (according to the source). It is not known whether or not he will be submitting any more material.--those songs won't be on but Gene says Ace is 'writing as we speak'
    6. And the one rumour which I found REALLY surprising (which may actually be true, I saw it on the KISSASYLUM.com site, in addition to the ace site) is that Bruce Kulick is helping with some of the songwriting.--he has done some demos with Paul

    Bruce Sets the Record Straight
    From: Bruce Kool
Just wanted to let you all know about few things going on with me and UNION and to set some things straight regarding the new KISS record. First, for those of you who attended the INDY convention it was a blast for sure. I just wish I felt better. I had a slight fever and if I got you sick sorry!! I will be in Nashville on March 15th with John Corabi and we will play an acoustic set for the crowd. I will also play some electric stuff from Revenge, "Liar"from the Return of the Comet disc and more good stuff you'll enjoy.
Eric Singer, John Corabi and myself will appear at the Orlando Expo as well on the 29th of this month. I think that one will very cool. John and I will probably be in Florida for a few days before doing some radio and in-store events so it will be posted if you are down there in sunny Florida. We will all jam with Karl Cochran and that will be very cool to see.
For those of you that bought the UNION disc thank you!! I hope you are enjoying the music and if was hard to find understand that Mayhem's distributer is large but not as large as Mercury's etc. For the people still waiting for things from Mayhem like picture discs or work force stuff it is coming soon. All will be taken care of and sorry if there seems to be a delay.
UNION looks to tour starting in May and it is being booked now. It will be a club tour and details will come as soon as we have it routed. It will be lots of cool songs and not just the UNION material will be played.
Regarding the Psycho Circus record, as usual lots of rumours are flying on the board regarding the record. I have been involved with some pre-production demos with Paul, which was quite fun. I really do enjoy working with him. I was just helping out and was not asked to appear on the record. How well they are getting along and the other issues people are discussing is not known by me, but I believe this record will shape up to be a great KISS album.
Thanks again for your support and all in UNION are looking forward to the tour!!

    Bruce & John in Europe
From: Joop / KISS Kollector Online
Great news for European Bruce Kulick/UNION fans:
Bruce Kulick just informed the KISS Kollector Fanclub that John Corabi & Bruce will be in Europe for one week in April to promote UNION's upcoming European release of their debut album. It will probably be the second week of April, and they'll do promotion in Germany, France and the UK. The album will be released in Europe through Mayhem's European affiliate Rough Trade (in the UK: Pinnacle).

    KISS Destoryer 3D Figure!
    From: Steve Higgs
Just wanted to let all the Kiss fans out there know about a great looking premium figure coming out this summer. I've been helping David Snowden lately, and he was showing me a few things coming out soon. He showed me a prototype Kiss Destroyer 3D figure. All I can say is this thing looks awesome. It's a premium piece of work. The figure of course is the Destroyer album cover that will stand wherever you want it to. It is definitely one of the nicer Kiss items that will be out. Look for more information on this soon.

More "Ask Eddie Kramer" Questions Answered
    From: KissJawa@aol.com
Hey everyone!! I saw about the "Ask Eddie Kramer" thing here on the KISS Asylum and sent him a couple of KISS questions. Well, he answered them!! The questions and answers are up at the Mars Music "Ask Eddie Kramer" site, but here they are:

  • Q: Being a HUGE KISS fan, I wanted to ask you this: Was ROCK AND ROLL OVER really recorded in a "live" atmosphere - with all the guys doing their thing at the same time? If so, what kind of special problems, if any, does that pose in the recording process?
Eddie:The way we recorded Rock 'n' Roll Over was essentially live, and any mistakes were corrected later. There was some tape editing to put together the best performances. Recording a band live with everyone playing is still (in my opinion) the BEST way to get a great performance on tape. EK
  • Q: Could you comment on the three KISS "Alive" albums you were involved with, particularly the not so "live" sound present on "Alive III." Also, how much touch up is done on the "normal" live album and what sections (drums/guitars/vocals) usually need the most work after the fact?
Eddie: Fortunately, drums do not need any fixing! Quite often, though, guitars have to be fixed for obvious mistakes, particularly when the overall performance is great. Usually solo sections, too, the occasional rhythm guitar, the odd bass note, etc. EK
Finally, I saw that there was also ANOTHER KISS question asked and answered up on the site, so I've sent that along as well!! Way to go on letting people know about this cool feature KISS Asylum!!!
  • Q:How was it to work with Kiss? Did you get to go to any of their reunion shows?
Eddie: Working with Kiss was always a challenge, BUT, a lot of FUN!!! I was at one reunion show at Madison Square Garden in New York City. They were AWESOME! EK

From: Gary Garbett / KISSIN' Time USA Online
NEW YORK (Reuters) - A New York art dealer was sentenced to 28 months in prison Tuesday and ordered to repay $1.9 million to celebrity clients he admitted swindling out of valuable artworks. Todd Michael Volpe, 48, was sentenced in federal court in Manhattan by U.S. District Judge Michael Mukasey after pleading guilty last November to defrauding actor Jack Nicholson, singer Paul Stanley of the group Kiss, and producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, among other well-known clients.

UNION OR BUST! The Radio Promo Tour Travelogue
From: Paula Hogan of Mayhem Records
On Monday, February 9, I embarked on the first UNION promo tour. The guys, Bruce and John, had already begun - flying out of Los Angeles a day earlier. Destination - Minneapolis. Their first day, accompanied by Paul Bibeau and Dennis Clapp of Mayhem Records, found them visiting the headquarters of Musicland and Request Magazine, Best Buy, and a quick trip to a cool Midwest chain, Down in the Valley Records. After an early evening dinner, the guys headed to the airport, where they conducted a chat with Real Hollywood from a phone booth near their gate. It was at the end of their second flight that I was to meet up with them. It is here that my travel journal begins.

    Squeezing LP's Onto CD's
From: Ice Magazine (March 98 issue) via Aaron
Polygram Chronicles overhauled the KISS catalog late last summer, and a couple of Ice readers wrote in with beefs about the packaging. Richard Woolington of Indy, IN. points out, "Gene Simmons himself long proclaimed that the new remasters would include 'all the goodies' formerly included in the original records. The art would be premium quality and they weren't sure how, but the 'goodies' would be included" Woolington then ran through a few differences between the original LP graphics and what was reproduced for the CD's, such as, "The cardboard gun in Love Gun was just printed on the sleeve like an afterthought." And Woflgang Pesch e-mailed us, "Kiss Alive and Kiss Alive II were both reissued on double CD's, when both releases would have fit on single CD's. What was Mercury thinking?"

    Ask Eddie Kramer
    From: Seeya2nite
Thanks to Kiss Asylum telling me about this Eddie Kramer Q&A thing, I was able to check it out. I went there today and found that he answered my question! I asked, " Eddie, I want to ask you a question about the KISS "Alive" albums. Of the 3 you produced, which one do you like best and why? And, if KISS asked you to produce a 4th Alive album, would you be interested?"
Eddie Kramer replied: "Kiss Alive I was the most fun because of its unique challenge. The boys were pretty raw/rough in the early days, so a fair amount of "fixing up" had to be done. Plus, I had to be creative with the tapes coming from many different sources, making the whole concert sound as if it were recorded in one place. If Kiss wanted a 4th, of course I would do it - in a flash! EK"

    Psycho Circus Demo
    From: JGali80
A friend of mine heard the demo for Psycho Circus. I didn't want him to tell me every detail because I want to be suprised. I've heard pre-released KISS demos months before actual release dates since Lick It Up, but this one they are really keeping under raps. In fact, my friend is close to Ace and Ace let him hear it (against the orders of Gene and Paul), but wouldn't let him copy it.

    Gene's AX Bass Spotted
    From: Matt Sims
I spotted Gene's Axe bass on VH1. I think it was that Hard Rock Cafe Special. The time was 12:30PM PST in California March 1, 1998. They were showing all sorts of guitars. Gene's axe bass just popped up for a second. It's definately on of the greatest basses of all time.
