KAOL Hits the Airwaves Again With A Radio Special
From: Kathy Labonte
I have some great news regarding the KISS Army OnLine CD projects. This Easter Sunday, the KAOL CDs will be spotlighted on one of Detroit's biggest rock stations, WRIF. At 10 pm Eastern time, an entire half hour show will be devoted to KAOL and it's Detroit band, Lithium. Lithium performed "Two Timer" on Creatures of The Net and "Love Her All I Can" on the KAOL Remaster, Music From The Folder '99. They are currently working on Gene's "Tunnel of Love" for the final disc in the series, KAOL 3 - The Spirit of '78 which is in pre-production now. Both "Two Timer" and "Love Her All I Can" will be played Sunday during the show as well as some of Lithium's original material. A sneak preview of "Tunnel Of Love" may also air. For those of you who are not within broadcast range, this show will be aired worldwide over the Internet as well at www.wrif.com 10 pm Eastern/7 pm Pacific - Easter Sunday. Mark your calendars! A new shipment of discs was just stocked in the Detroit chain of Harmony House record stores in time for this broadcast. Some of you may remember last year when a competing Detroit station did a small piece on KAOL and played some of Lithium's track as well as The Partridge Family Tribute version of "Shout It Out Loud". That bit sparked sales at the Harmony House chain and they now carry both KAOL CDs. In other news: We are just a couple of weeks away from making another cash donation to The Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. Details will be posted when it happens. Two very big announcements are also on the way concerning a couple of more KISS related projects that MusiCare Online hopes to release this year and that fans will love. Both feature very successful individuals in the KISS world who are donating 100% of their talents to help raise more money for the hospital in Eric's name. Details are tentative at this time. Watch in the next few weeks for an announcement on those projects.

VH-1 Officially adds Psycho Circus
From: Brian Pedersen
In the new issue of Billboard magazine the Psycho Circus video was listed under the "new adds" for VH-1 this week. Why they are adding the video to the playlist now is a little strange.

More on Russian KISS Dates
From: Andrew Romeo
Greetings from Moscow: It has just been locally confirmed that the US Embassy sent a letter to KISS, stating that they cannot guarantee the group's security during concerts which had been planned for April 1 & 2 in Moscow and April 4th in St. Petersburg. This is all due to the NATO air bombardments in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, which have pissed off a lot of people here, and have caused rioting at the embassy and general bad feelings towards locally resident Americans (yours truly included). It has been stated by the local promoters that KISS has therefore canceled the shows here. No word yet on whether they'll be rescheduled, or how refunds are to be processed. Too bad. And I thought Gene could take 'em all on singlehandedly. Needless to say, we're saddened by the news. Hopefully, they'll reschedule when things calm down. We wanted the best and we got the worst.

KISS Russian Dates Canceled?
[KA Note: Though not officially confirmed yet, it appears likely that KISS's scheduled dates in Russia will be canceled due to the political/military disturbances in the region. We have received the following reports from three very reliable and knowledgeable sources of European KISS information.]
From: Florian / KISS Asylum News Germany
I just came back from the show in Dortmund and in two hours I am leaving for the last show in Europe (Kiel). The last show? Yes! Because of the trouble in Yugoslavia KISS has canceled the Russian Tour. Bad luck for all Russian KISS fans.
From: Michel Banen / KISS Chikara Magazine
Sources at last night's concert in Dortmund said the Russian dates will be cancelled due to the recent war.
From: Alex Eckert
Yesterday at the KISS show in Dortmund they said the Russian tour is cancelled because of the political situation there. Paul saw a TV report in his hotelroom where they burned an American flag in Russia.

KISS Mention In Garth Brooks Interview
From: James Dunn
Here's a comment from Garth Brooks during a recent interview with E!Online.
Interviewer : I recently talked to Gene Simmons from KISS and told him I'd be interviewing you. He wanted to know if you had any advice for aging rock stars who still cover themselves with makeup on stage.
Garth: Don't change a thing. That's one of the best gimmicks a band could ever come up with. I love their music. I've got a long list of musicians I admire, but yeah, I've had the fantasy many times of getting in the makeup and going on stage with KISS.

Paul Stanley Mention In Entertainment Weekly
From: KISS Asylum
There is a small Paul Stanley mention on page 95 of the April 2nd edition of Entertainment Weekly. Paul is tagged as the "Thespian of the Week" with the mention stating: "Talk about a Phantom menace: On May 25, the KISS guitarist will begin a 10-week stint as the title character in the Toronto production of The Phantom of the Opera."
Click Here For More Info on Paul Stanley as the Phantom.

KISS Mention In NY Times
From: Terri Bey
KISS was mentioned in the Sunday New York Times "Arts" section in an article about wreslting titled: "What Rock Could Learn From the WWF." The article had a picture of Gene, and here is what they had to say about KISS: "Before Vince McMahon turned wrestling into a theatrical spectacle, there was KISS with its makeup, rocket-launching guitars and blood spitting. And the main thing professional wrestling has that KISS doesn't is the illusion of violence and danger. " The premise of the article seems to be that rock shows have lost their theatrical side in the name of "realism" and should take some cues from wrestling to get back audiences.

Q-107 Paul Stanley Radio Interview
From: tri-line@sympatico.ca
I caught the last 5 minutes of a Q107 radio interview with Paul Stanley. The main topic of discussion was his upcoming role as the Phantom starting May 25. He did go thru a series of auditions for the part and he did mention that he will be singing in traditional Phantom style. Basically it won't be a rock'n'roll version of the play. The interviewer did bring up the vocal challenge of doing the part, Paul basically stated that it requires a different "technique" of singing versus the traditional r&r style that we know him for. He seemed very confident in this area, bottom line: expect to see a different side of Mr.Stanley. Do not expect the Love Gun/Lick it Up/Psycho version. Q107 will be running the KISS weekend starting at 3:00 pm this Friday. Basically 1 out of every 4-5 songs played by the station will be a Kiss track. They will be giving away free tickets to the Phantom over the weekend. Other groups who've received this treatment include Zeppelin, Pearl Jam, Rush, Pink Floyd, AC-DC, Aerosmith etc.

KISS in Computer Gaming World
From: Mike Ohrwashel
The May issue of Computer Gaming World features a small story and an interview with Gene Simmons. The article outlines the author's trip to Finland to meet the Demon and interview him for the magazine. A photo is included as well as the author's thoughts on the other members of the band and the concert. The interview is supposed to cover the upcoming Psycho Circus game being produced by G.O.D., but instead centers around the basic "KISS questions."

KISS Songs on DRC Soundtrack
From: Metal Edge via Mike Hogan
Since KISS fans already have more compilations than they can count, there will be just four KISS songs on the Detroit Rock City soundtrack: "Shout it Out Loud," "Calling Dr. Love," the new version of "Detroit Rock City," and the new ballad "Nothing Can Keep Me From You," written by Diane Warren. The rest of the soundtrack will be comprised of classic rock songs and three or four newly cut versions of classic rock songs. The soundtrack will hit the streets before the movie, which is due out August 13.

UNION: Live Album, Metal Edge & More
From: The UNION Asylum
There's some great coverage for UNION in the latest Metal Edge! Page 75 of the June 1999 issue (on stands 3/23/99) contains an excellent, half page review of the upcoming UNION Live album: "Live In The Galaxy" (review available online now at The UNION Asylum). According to Bruce, the release date for "Live In The Galaxy" is set for May 18, 1999, so start asking your local record stores for it now to be sure they carry it (as well as the debut UNION album re-issue) upon release! Bruce recently returned from a stint in Europe where he attended eight KISS Expos and five KISS concerts over the course of two weeks. More about Bruce's time in Europe, including some great personal photos will be available at Bruce's Virtual Studio website in the coming weeks. In other UNION related news, Bruce and John will be appearing at the Indy KISS Expo on May 2, 1999 in their capacity as ESP members, where they will be joined by fellow ESPers Eric Singer and Karl Cochran. ESP is currently scheduled to perform at the Expo, and the "Lost And Spaced" CD will be available for purchase there as well. Finally, Bruce says that UNION will not be touring with Poison as some rumors have it, but that the band instead continues work and preparation for their second studio album, which is currently still in the writing stage.

Gene's 50th Birthday Surprise
From: KISS Kollector Online
Gene's upcoming 50th birthday... Can you keep a secret? If you promise to keep it a secret to Gene until August 25, we'll share a something with you: KISS Kollector Fanclub is planning a surprise for Gene on his 50th birthday. When The Demon turns 50 on August 25 of this year, in exactly 160 days from now, we'd like to present him with a very special gift that you can be part of. We want you to send us a photo of yourself sticking out your tongue in Gene 'The Demon' Simmons style (without make-up though!), along with a few lines in which you explain how Gene has influenced your life. If you don't feel like sticking out your tongue, any other typical 'Gene pose' is fine as well. You can e-mail your contribution to kisskollector@animalize.com (please attach your picture as a JPEG/JPG file), You may also write it down and send it through regular mail, along with your photo, to: KISS Kollector Fanclub, P.O. Box 1159, 1200 BD Hilversum, Holland. Please state your name, age, profession and the country you live in as well. Any other personal info is welcome, but make sure you don't include anything that you don't want to see published. When the magical day comes, the complete collection will be presented to Gene.

KISS Controvery in Avon, Indiana School
From: D. Frank
I had to laugh at this out of this morning's Indianapolis Star paper.
(AVON) Faith Baptist Church of Avon plans to rally its members Monday in hopes that the Avon School Board will remove a controversial classroom display of the rock group KISS at Avon High School. The display includes a poster and collectible items put up by algebra teacher, Tony Record. Last month, the school board refused a parent's request to have it taken down. Kent Wells, an Avon resident had complained that the display was offensive to his son, a student in Record's class. Although Wells attends church in Indianapolis, local churches have stepped in to support him. "Everything KISS espouses is...I don't want to use the word wicked, but that's what it is," said Matt Phillips, youth pastor at Faith Baptist Church.

On-the-road updates from the European tour
From: KISS Kollector Online
Although every KISS show is basically the same, sometimes strange or funny things happen. In Sweden the band fooled around a lot and had water fights on stage, while in Germany Paul managed to get part of the crowd angry and booing by singing the beginning of the German national anthem. After some shows in Germany, Gene finally got Paul to forget about the national anthem (by shaking 'no' with his head). On the fourth German date however, Ace all of a sudden started singing it - again to the disliking of the audience. Still in Germany, on March 12 the band wasn't allowed to use any pyro or blow up things at the small venue they were playing in Bremen. Instead, they kept all the fireworks for the final song of the night. This enormous display of pyrotechnics must have driven the local firebrigade nuts. There was no flying at all at the Stadthalle in Bremen, just like there are no hydraulic lifts on the entire European leg of the tour. In Utrecht, Holland, Gene didn't fly either, because of the low ceiling at the venue. He also got pissed at one of the security guys, who was looking at Gene most of the time, instead of watching the crowd. Read the rest at KISS Kollector Online

KISS on TMF's Mainstream Rock Weekend in Holland
From: KISS Kollector Online
In the weekend of March 20/21 you can see some footage from the recent KISS concert in Utrecht, Holland on TMF - Holland's answer to MTV. As we reported earlier, DJ and TMF presenter Mental Theo attended the concert with a camera crew to shoot some material for TMF's Mainstream Rock Weekend special. Expect the KISS footage to be aired on Saturday (12.30 PM CET). Bruce Kulick, who was backstage at the KISS show in Holland and watched the concert from the side of the stage, was interviewed too so he might appear on the Mainstream Rock Weekend too. On Sunday you can see the Mainstream Rock Top 50. The best part about itis, that you can have a say in compiling the Top 50 by surfing to the TMF web site. Once you get there, click on 'What's Hot' and then select 'Rock Weekend'. Scrowl down to the line 'Mainstream Rock Top 50' and click on this link. Fill out the questionnaire with 'je naam' (your name), 'je e-mail adres' (your e-mail address), your No. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 and click on 'versturen naar TMF' (send to TMF). Unfortunately TMF doesn't have too many KISS videoclips, so we probably all have to vote for I Was Made For Lovin' You to get KISS in the Top 10, or maybe even at the No. 1 spot.

From: KISS Kollector Online

KISS Mention on "The Daily Show"
From: Jenk99@aol.com
Jon Stewart had a segment on the Daily Show (comedy central) the other night which talked about Paul Stanley's involvement in the "Phantom of the Opera." He had a bit about what the other 3 members of KISS should do in the meantime while Paul is doing the "Phantom" show. Among other things he had this "advice" for Ace: "Someone should pay Ace Frehley a lot of money NOT to take any solos. Buy a Jeff Beck album and this time....Listen to it!!!!" http://www.comedycentral.com/

Gene on E! Channel
From: Bob Fields
I was watching the E! channel last night 3/15 and they had a special on Playboy Playmates of the 80's. The first Playmate they did a piece on was Shannon Tweed. During the interview they mentioned how her and Gene have been together for 14 years since meeting at Hef's place. A few photos were shown of Gene and her together and one of just Gene in full costume. Also they showed a short video clip of Shannon with the kids. She mentioned how great her and Gene were doing and that he has a great head on his shoulders and knows what is important in life. Just thought you would like to know!

KAOL CD Specials
From: Kathy Labonte
For the remainder of March we will be offering a special deal on the KAOL discs. Purchase "Creatures of The Net" and the re-mastered "Music From The Folder '99" and we'll also ship you a copy of the original KAOL Folder disc from 1997 for free. They've been discontinued for a while but there are still some left. If you are into collecting at all, it would be a cool addition to have all of the KAOL series before they sell out. Orders must be postmarked before March 31st to get the free KAOL CD. Also, the jazz disc that I told everyone about 2 weeks ago is now for sale. Lisa Lauren Manor's "Timeless" is currently receiving national airplay and can be ordered thru the MusiCare Online website. This debut album was donated to us and all profits go towards the funding of the final KAOL 3 or directly to CHoW. Even if you hate smooth jazz, maybe you have a friend or family member who would like it as a gift. The money goes to a great cause and the music is exceptional so it's definitely worth it. Still unsure? There are 4 wav samples of some tunes on the webpage - listen and love it! They are only mono quality but you'll get the idea. If either of these offers appeal to you, head over to the MusiCare Online homepage for all of the KAOL info and more. MusiCare Online

"We Are One" Played on ABC Sports Intro
From: Chris Mende

Gene Simmons Mentioned on Jay Leno
From: John Zimmer
During Thursday nights broadcast, Jay Leno introduced what he called the Gene Simmons ear wax remover during a segment on music inventions. Basicly, it was a head painted up like Gene's, and when you pushed the lever behind his head, a long toungue would come out of his mouth, and was supposed to be used for removing your ear wax. Jay also went on to say that his mother always said you shold never put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear. Jay's final thought was a vivid picture of what else you could use the Gene Simmons head and tongue for such as sticking it into other "holes". Very funny piece!

Paul Stanley: Phantom Of The Opera
From: ABC News via Kim Mayhall
NEW YORK (Variety) - Bankrupt theater company Livent is expected to announce as early as Thursday that it will shutter production of ``The Phantom of the Opera'' at Toronto's Pantages Theater after the show's 10th anniversary in late September. ``Phantom'' has long been a cash cow for Livent but company executives believe their newest Broadway show, ``Fosse,'' could do better, industry insiders said. In any event, ``Phantom'' will get a few more milkings before being put out to pasture: various Canadian and American pop stars will appear as the Phantom over the next few months. In April, Canada's answer to Donny Osmond, singer Rene Simard, is expected to join the company in the title role in an eight-week run. He'll be followed by KISS lead vocalist and guitarist Paul Stanley in a 10-week run. Stanley may be as unconventional a choice as any in the usually dainty world of musical theater, but he's certainly no slouch at selling records, having sold 70 million albums worldwide. The leather-clad kabuki rocker will take time off from the group's ``Psycho Circus'' world tour for his commitment to ``Phantom,'' and will resume touring in North America in August and in Asia in the fall. "Phantom'' will round out its run with Jeff Hyslop, who has some familiarity with the role, having played 800 performances during his time with the touring company.

More On Paul Stanley Joining Phantom Of The Opera
From: Digital Hit Entertainment
Toronto-based theatrical producer Livent announced today that its long-running production of Andrew Lloyd-Webber's The Phantom of the Opera would leave Toronto's Pantages Theatre on September 26th, 1999. With roughly six months to go before the show's 10th anniversary, the company also announced the signing of three performers who will don the mask. They are Canadian singing star René Simard, Canadian song-and-dance sensation Jeff Hyslop, and most surprisingly, Paul Stanley, the lead singer of the rock band KISS. Messrs. Simard and Hyslop attended the press conference, while Mr. Stanley made his introduction to the press via a long distance phone call. Paul said that he's wanted to play the role for ten years and hopes to introduce theater to a broader audience. The dates for the three Phantoms are:

  • Rene Simard: April 2 to May 23
  • Paul Stanley: May 25 to August 1
  • Jeff Hyslop: August 3 to September 26
In celebration of its ten year run, prices for Phantom are being rolled back to 1989 levels. For tickets information call 416-872-2222. Groups of 20 or more should call 416-925-7466.

After the official support of the Kiss show in Paris (03/22/99) coming from their sponsor 'Hard'N'Heavy' magazine (full pages colored ads), it's now another important rock media turns to give a real tribute to the 'Big Bisou' (Kiss' french nickname). The March issue of 'Hard Rock' magazine is really very special : four different full colored awesome covers are available in the newsstands, each figuring a Kiss member. There are actually two different issues but with four covers. One of them figures Ace on the front cover, and the back cover is a reverse front cover figuring Paul. Gene & Peter are on the other one. These are really awesome covers. 'Hard Rock magazine' is named 'Hard Rock Circus' for this issue. Inside, the four members are interviewed in a very classic way (8 pages report). The fan can also win 10 complete discographies in a giveaway. It's the first time in France that KISS has such a place in the rock medias.

Cornerstone KISS Card News -- Series 3
    From: Jerry Arambula
I just recieved some information from Cornerstone. I inquired about Series 3 KISS Cards and also asked about them possibly re-issuing the Donruss KISS Cards Series 1 & 2. Cornerstone said, "We has extended the KISS trading card license another 3 years !Series 3 will ship in August 1999, continuing where series 1 (not 2) left off! Also we had thought of including original Donruss KISS cards as chase cards in the first series but abandoned the idea. Not sure if we could legally reprint Donruss KISS cards without permission. Look for more news soon!"

    RockHeads News
    From: KISS Asylum
Great news KISS fans! The long awaited and never released music of Eric Carr's Rockheads project is finally a reality. Bruce Kulick, Eric Carr's family and Adam Mitchell (KISS co-writer) have put together an EP featuring four of the tracks written for Eric's Rockheads animation. The EP features the songs: "Tiera" - "Too Cool For School" - "Nasty Boys" - and "Can You Feel It." Adam informs us that the material, originally written and recorded in the mid to late 80's, has been remastered from the original tracks and features Eric on all instruments except lead guitar, which is provided by Bruce. Eric also handles lead vocals on the tracks, with Eric and Adam covering the backing vocal duties. Initially the CD will only be available in Europe (David Snowden Promotions is taking pre-orders), but plans are also underway to arrange for direct U.S. distribution and sales. Bruce, Adam, and Eric's sister Loretta Caravello are all very excited about the release of the material in light of how much they know the music/Rockheads meant to Eric. And in that vein, Bruce has informed us that he, Adam, and Loretta are committed shopping the Rockheads animation around to television in hopes of sharing that part of Eric's dream with all his fans as well. And though there are no plans in place yet for an actual release of the animation, the release of the music will only help in their efforts to bring the Rockheads animation to life. Finally, Bruce indicated that there are also plans to complete a full length CD of Eric's music later in the year which will inlcude Rockheads material, as well as other music and demos from Eric that have never been released.

KISS Video Spotlight -- Video Club Petition
From: Byron Fogle / KISS Asylum Video Spotlight
Most of you (hopefully) know me as the Video Spotlight guy. Anyway, last month I tried to organize a poll in my article to get KISS to do a video club. Basically what it entails is once every month or two they release a full concert from the "Vaults" and make them available for the fans. They have so much footage they tease us with so why not put it out? Personally I'd love to have Eric Carr's 1st show or tryout's with KISS, or a club show from 73/74 rather than another set of action figures or cars. So, if you agree please write me at bfogle@kissonline.net and in the subject heading put Video Club. I did get some great responses, but I need more if I'm going to get Gene or Paul's attention. So SPEAK UP KISS Army and maybe we can accomplish this dream together.

Bob Ezrin's Comments In Guitar World
    From Craig R. Gimbi
Just wanted to drop a line to let everybody know that in the April 1999 copy of Guitar World featuring SRV there is an article and conversation with Bob Ezrin, producer of KISS' Destroyer, The Elder, and Revenge albums. In the interview with Mr. Ezrin titled "The Wall Of Sound: Legendary studio wizard Bob Ezrin looks back at his best, worst and most unusual productions" by David Konow, when asked why he thought the band wanted him to produce the Destroyer album, he responds, "I think we consciously went after trying to re-invent the band. Basically, that seems to be my role with KISS. They call me when they're at a crisis point or when they need something to push them forward." He adds that the kids you hear at the beginning of God of Thunder were actually his kids talking through walkie-talkies that were miked for effect. As for The Elder, it appears Ezrin ranks this production effort as one of his worst. When asked about his production of what Guitar World calls "KISS' somewhat disastrous (Music From) The Elder", Ezrin responds, "No I didn't! It's lie! I never did! They (KISS) didn't either! Okay... yeah, I did. Oh, it's horrible!" He continues, "(Recently) after getting about halfway through side one, I looked at my wife and said 'You know something? I should have been killed before being allowed to finish this! This is one of the worst crimes that has ever been perpetrated on music!'" He felt it had nothing to do with KISS, and they should have realized it. Finally, he concludes, "I think Gene and Paul were competing with each other instead of working together, and Ace didn't even want to show up. He didn't like it at all, and you know, in retrospect, he was dead right. He just couldn't express himself well enough to explain why it was wrong. It was not a great situation all around, and it shows."

    KAOL KISS Tribute CD News
    From: Kathy Labonte
A New Donation to Charity from MusiCare Online
As most of you may know, MusiCare Online puts out the KAOL Tribute CDs. For those of you who aren't familiar, KAOL are the musicians of the KISS Army OnLine who have come together to make a 3 part series of KISS Tribute CDs where all of the money goes to charity. Parts One and Two are already released and on the market, Part Three will be finished within a year (audition tapes for the final KAOL album are being accepted now - see the website for details if your band is interested). MusiCare Online has made steady donations over the last couple of years to the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin from the sales of the KAOL Tribute CDs in memory of Eric Carr. We are on schedule to donate another $1000 later this year but this week we have donated in a different way. An up and coming jazz/R&B artist named Lisa Manor has just donated a box of her debut CD "Timeless" to MusiCare Online to sell and raise money for the making of the final "KAOL 3 - The Spirit of '78". But we have taken several dozen copies of the actual disc and sent them off to the hospital as gifts for the kids that are spending a large portion of their lives as resident patients. Random children ranging from ages 8 thru 18 will receive a copy. Better than a stuffed animal and much more rewarding to give directly to the kids vs. selling them for fundraising, we hope that the CDs will bring smiles to lots of little faces.
