From: ReviewJournal.com

Is PAUL STANLEY, the vocalist for KISS, about to become The Phantom of Las Vegas?

That's the rumor. Stanley, who twice starred as The Phantom in the Toronto production of "The Phantom of the Opera" in 1999, is in talks with "Phantom: The Las Vegas Spectacular," sources tell me.

Stanley, 56, is having a penthouse suite built atop Palms Place near suites owned by pop singer Jessica Simpson and pro wrestling icon Hulk Hogan.

From: Fortune Magazine
Posted: February 28, 2008

KISS is still around - and GENE SIMMONS will tell you it's bigger than ever. That's because Simmons, who co-owns the trademark with bandmate PAUL STANLEY, estimates that he has licensed more than 3,000 KISS products that run the gamut from rock & roll (coffins, condoms) to suburban-dad tame (Hasbro Toothtunes toothbrushes, coffeehouses).

He's also turned his penchant for promotion, which fueled the band's fire-breathing success in the 1970s, into a second act: marketing. Clients include the Indy Racing League, for which Simmons crafted the slogan "I am Indy."

Then there's the Gene brand: His A&E reality show, "GENE SIMMONS: Family Jewels," is currently taping its third season. All those commitments keep Simmons on the road for almost half the year, and that's when the band isn't touring. We caught up with the rocker in New York City to talk travel.

Click to enlarge ACE FREHLEY Cleans Up After KISS
From: Niagara Falls Review
Posted: February 28, 2008

At his lowest point a few years back, ACE FREHLEY took a good long look at his options: He could either be a living rock icon, or a dead one.

He had flirted with the second one far too long as the lead guitarist for KISS. It was time to give the other one a try.

Bottoming out after yet another KISS ‘farewell’ tour in 2001/2002, Frehley decided his life – and legacy – was too good to waste. He’s a founding member of one of the biggest rock bands in history – what more reason do you need to get out of bed?

The setlist was the same as he's been playing at other stops on this tour.

Ace had some kind of technical trouble with his guitar during "Shock Me", and didn't sing the first half of the song as he was getting his axe fixed.

The place was maybe 2/3 full (I think the arena holds about 1000), but the crowd was loud and boisterous.

Unlike many rock legends, GENE SIMMONS did not grow up in a home where music filled the halls.

"It was a quiet household," Simmons said. "I come from a broken home. My father left us when I was 6 or 7 years old, and my mother worked from sun up until sundown, so there was never any music at home."

Instead, he discovered rock 'n' roll music "naturally" by listening to the radio. Simmons said the early rock he listened to "crawled into my blood."

From: Rockpages.gr

Posted: February 21, 2008

Rockpages Web Magazine ten days ago started a KISS Special feature for the band’s 35th anniversary. We will provide interviews with 30 KISS-related persons (we started with former KISS manager Bill Aucoin).

This week we publish an interview with the producer of KISS Symphony CD/DVD, Mark Opitz. Mr. Opitz discusses his collaboration with KISS in 2003. Here’s an excerpt of the interview: Rockpages.gr: What was your first reaction when KISS approached you to produce one of the most bizarre musical combinations: rock n roll + classical music?

Mark Opitz: Australian promoter Michael Gudinski recommended me to KISS. My reaction was not one of the bizarre but of the size and scope of the project. The actual audio recording alone required 3 tracks and a team of 12 engineers plus crew. The video side added at least another 40. The mix of rock and classical is not a new concept so that part didn’t concern me as much as making sure we captured every note.

Hello everyone! Just back from Japan with the ERIC SINGER Project (ESP) and what a great time we had playing and visiting Tokyo. I have always loved Japan as the people are so polite and hard working, and the food and service is impeccable. We arrived via NWA on Flight 1, (I thought that was cool) on Friday afternoon, and off to the city. The airport is almost 2 hours away, and our promoter friend Takashi and the band told crazy stories to kill the time. We checked into the hotel, and we were pleased with the size of the rooms which were large considering how small they can be in Japan. We then went off to dinner. We found a cool Chinese place ironically! But the food was tasty of course and we knew we would have sushi the next few days for sure.

Posted: February 14, 2008

Thanks to KISS ARMY AUSTRALIA fan site for sending us the following interview with Boogie Street Guitar's Eric McKenna. Eric discusses working with Paul on his Washburn Guitars.

1. You have a strong affiliation with Washburn guitars. How did that come about?

Well, I started BSG in late 1998. Initially I bought and sold used and vintage guitars online. BSG grew and grew and eventually, my home could not support the business and I decided to lease an office here in Pittsburgh in 2003. Once this was done, I truly wanted to design guitars. Not so much design a shape or 'structure' of a guitar but I wanted to work on the aesthetics side of business. Paint, tone-wood selections, pickups, inlay, etc. After a few years in the used guitar business, I began to really have strong opinions as to what 'works' and was did not. With that thought in mind, I approached Washburn in late 2003 with my idea of working exclusively with one major guitar manufacturer. By forging this very strong and personal relationship with Rudy Schlacher (CEO) and his personnel at USMusic Corp (Washburn), BSG quickly grew to be Washburn largest dealer while at the same time, commissioning truly custom import and USA guitars. Guitars with aesthetics that have not been seen in the marketplace before.

The product of KISS bassist, GENE SIMMONS, Zipper is the tale of alien Xeng Ral, who has fled from his world where individuality is a crime. Escaping to Earth and to the city of Detroit (my hometown), Xeng Ral is befriended by a small time hood, Ronnie, as well as Detroit Police Detective Linda Maki. Xeng’s race, the Etherians, have tracked him to Earth and set four hunters on his trail. They are intent on bringing Xeng back so their collective can be made whole again. With the aid of his friends, Xeng managed to elude the hunters in the third issue. Xeng and the hunters all where cybernetic Exo battle-suits which can cloak their true appearances.

The fourth issue opens as the Tang Fe, the Etherian leader, gets an update from his security forces on the status of Xeng Ral. He is none too happy to hear that not only has the fugitive eluded the hunters, but is getting assistance from Earthlings. In order to repair their collective, and send a message to any other member of their race who might seek the same kind of freedom, Tang Fe now orders his hunters to destroy Xeng Ral.

Click to enlarge Confessions of a KISS Fan
From: ComicsBulletin.com

Posted: February 8, 2008

I did buy the KISS comic published by Marvel Comics in 1977. I was a big DC fan, but I had to have that magazine-sized comic, the one where the band, according to a statement on the cover, added some of their own blood into the ink. I believe the story was written by Steve Gerber, but I don’t remember who the artists were. I sold it and all my KISS albums long ago.

Every now and then during the last thirty years, I would find myself humming "Detroit Rock City" or "Shout It Out Loud"--two definitive KISS songs off their Destroyer album--but then something by Cheap Trick or ABBA or The Smiths or U2 would chime in, and I’d forget about KISS again.

But not lately. And I have Donald Trump to thank for it.

Click to enlarge Q & A With Tommy
From: TommyThayer.com
Posted: February 8, 2008

KISS guitarist TOMMY THAYER has answered the following fan questions:

QUESTION 1: Hi Tommy! First of all, I want to thank you for your role in keeping KISS rocking for the past two decades. I've been a fan since the seventies, and it's great that you're not only the lead guitarist, but a huge fan of the band as well. I'm guessing that I have you to thank for the addition of songs like "Love Her All I Can" and "Kissin' Time" to the set in recent years. My question is regarding the non-make-up material that featured BRUCE KULICK on guitar. I know that the Les Paul is almost as much a part of the spaceman persona as the silver make up and lightning bolts, but I was wondering if you would ever consider using a guitar equipped with a whammy bar for songs like "Unholy" and "Tears are Falling." Are you guys going for more of an ACE FREHLEY vibe on the Bruce stuff? Also, is there any chance of you convincing Gene and Paul to add Carnival of Souls material? Many of us really love that album and would enjoy hearing it live. Hope to see you and the rest of KISS in New York in 2008! - Charlie K, Wantaugh, NY

ANSWER: Charlie, Thanks for the great note and question. I've played a Les Paul since I began playing guitar, with much of my early influence coming directly from KISS and Ace. I did play some whammy bar stuff in the 80s, but I'm mostly born and bred on Gibson Les Pauls. So that would naturally be my approach onstage. If an "Unholy" or "Tears Are Falling" finds itself in the KISS set list, I would naturally adapt that solo to a Les Paul and "classic KISS" sort of approach so that it works seamlessly with all of the other songs.

Posted: February 6, 2008

Guitarist ACE FREHLEY, who got sober after leaving KISS again in 2002, is in the midst of recording his first solo album since 1990, with a planned April release, he tells Billboard.com.

Frehley, who is recording the as-yet-untitled album at his home studio in Westchester, N.Y., aims to have it finished by Feb. 20, when he starts a North American concert tour. He reports he is currently negotiating with "two or three record labels" to put it out but says he'll release it first through his official web site, which is currently being revamped, and perhaps also via iTunes.

"Basically, I'm trying to get back into the mindset I was in when I did my first solo record [1978's 'ACE FREHLEY']," Frehley says. "That record seemed to have all the elements everybody liked -- a real cool instrumental, a hit single, some real heavy rockers, a nice variety of different genres of music."

Among his favorite new tracks are "A Little Below the Angels," hard rocking "Pain in the Neck," and an instrumental called "Fractured Quantum" which is a follow-up to his previous instrumentals "Fractured Mirror," "Fractured Too" and "Fractured III." Another favorite is "groove song" titled "Genghis Khan," which he likens in tone to Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir." Don't expect to hear any of the new songs at his concerts, however.

The Monday Muse: PAUL STANLEY

Who knew that KISS front man PAUL STANLEY had such a passion for painting? Certainly not me! Turns out "The Starchild" made his debut as a painter in 2005 and continues to create emotionally charged compositions, citing Kandinsky, Mondrian, Klee, and Rothko as influences. And collectors are gobbling his works up; Stanley's art sales exceeded $2 million for 2007.

Stanley will present his work at two special appearances at the Wentworth Galleries in Hackensack on Friday, February 8 and Short Hills on Saturday, February 9. Both events are free and open to the public, but require an RSVP.

Hi KISS Nation,

Last weekend we organized our annual meeting of KISS fans in Slovakia. We played videos, conversed and exchanged KISS merchandise. I have tried to keep the phenomenon KISS in Slovakia, because KISS were not in Europe for 9 years. I was excited that our meeting also attracted a young generation. We remembered Paul’s birthday and wished to him good health and good songs! I am excited about KISS concerts in Europe! I hope we will see the bombastic live KISS show together with the new young fans.

Yours sincerely,
Robert Ivanko from Slovakia (Slovak Republic)
