A FADED T-shirt that reads "Loud and proud since 1975" strides past. Then another boasting "30 years of rock: 1976-2006". This tour is titled "Alive 35", claiming KISS (finally correctly) have been going since 1973.

Diddling the dates to make a tour an "anniversary tour" is one ingenious way to keep a career going - especially one that involves a band doing the stuff they do every time, only bigger, brighter and louder - but you can't argue with the spectacle of a KISS show.

There are fireballs, fireworks and fire-breathing; wires to make everything fly, including the bassist GENE SIMMONS and his preposterous tongue; and enough blinding lights to power John Butler's next couple of carbon-neutral tours.

Click to enlarge KISS Alive 35 At Grand Prix: Review
From: fasterlouder.com.au

Posted: March 18, 2008

It had topped nearly 40 degrees in Melbourne this Grand Prix Sunday. And the rev-heads who’d been standing in the pelting sun and drinking beer all day were surprisingly sedate as they waited, chatting amiably, for KISS as little kids in Starchild make up ran in between their parent’s legs.

The speaker stacks jumped suddenly in volume, as the Who’s ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’ blared over the crowd. You could feel it thumping through the ground, it’s a throwdown if ever there was one. The giant black, KISS emblazoned flag dropped to hide the stage, and you knew they were behind there, the hottest band in the world! KIIIIIIIIIIIISS!!

Hey! Fireworks! The flag drops and the band have hit the stage with ‘Deuce’, and close-ups on GENE SIMMONS face show that he is already blinking sweat and greasepaint out of his eyes. It’s hot in the crowd; onstage under lights, surrounded by flames, wearing several extra kilos of spike laden costume and facepaint has got to be like having jalepeno peppers in your pants. You know your man is workin’ hard/ He’s worth a deuce. He is. Whatever a deuce is.

We here at GlamMetal had the privilege to sit down with one of the nicest guys in the music business, Anthony Esposito. The interview took place in his hotel room before the second night of back to back shows for the ACE FREHLEY band at the Bears Den inside the Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls New York. Even with all the commotion going on in his room, Anthony took the time to tell us everything from what the plans for the ACE FREHLEY band are to what he thinks of Ace’s guitar playing. Let’s hop onto this Rocket Ride and see where this takes us shall we??

Gus: How did you get involved with Ace?
Anthony: It was a buddy of mine Frankie Gibson, who happened to pass away about a year ago. He was a killer jewelry designer. He designed all of Ace's jewelry. He was the one who introduced me to Ace. We went up to his house and played and that was it. We jammed and one of Ace's friends Jeff (who was a truck driver) played drums. So it was me, Ace, and the truck driver. I was really nervous that I didn't play well because the drummer wasn't a pro guy. But it was great! Everything was great!

Gus: How long ago was that?
Anthony: About 2 to 2 and a half years ago...Frankie was still alive then.

Justin Lawrence still remembers the day his KISS obsession began. He was in kindergarten, and another kid in his class was drawing pictures of the band on stage - complete with big racks of drums, fire cannons and freaky face paint.

"I saw what he was doing and I thought that was really cool," recalled Lawrence. "It just took hold of me. Of course my parents were dead-set against the band."

In that respect, Lawrence was like so many other kids of the late 1970s. KISS, with its spiked leather outfits, devilish face paint and hard-driving music, quickly became an icon for a whole generation of preteens, even as the band put the fear of rock 'n' roll into an equal number of parents. Like many, Lawrence's parents wouldn't allow any of the band's albums into the house.

There’s no mistaking the contributions that ACE FREHLEY has made to rock and roll history. Not to mention the incredible solos and genre-defining guitar riffs, Frehley is the man responsible for designing the iconic KISS logo as well as the makeup he used for his "Space Ace" alter ego onstage.

Frehley helped start one of the most influential rock bands of the ‘70s in KISS and played with the group until 1983, when he departed to work on a solo career, only to return in the late ‘90s.

Today, the recently sober Frehley is benefiting from a rejuvenation of creativity, touring the U.S. and Canada and finishing up work on his first solo record in nearly 20 years. The guitarist took the time to speak with TCS Thursday, March 13, 2008 while en route to a gig in Calgary.

TOMMY THAYER really needs no introduction, founding member of Oregan band Black And Blue, Tommy has travelled the world and shared the stage with some of the biggest bands in the world. His introduction to the KISS Family stems back to the early eightees when GENE SIMMONS produced for Black and Blue. Tommy also went onto work with Gene writing Betrayed, and Street Giveth for KISS' 1990 album Hot In The Shade.

Following the break up of Black And Blue, Tommy did alot of session work and formed the very punk influenced band Shake The Faith. There album America the Violent, is highly recommended by us here at Behind The Amps. It was around this time, that Tommy began working for the KISS Company in various capacities, and in 2002 he was asked to fill the role of The Spaceman with the group.

Besides his roll in KISS, Tommy is highly involved with various charities and helping in the education of the youth in his native Oregan.

When it comes to his love of KISS, Adam wants to "shout it, shout it out loud!" Obsessed with the band since he was 4 years old, Adam's collection of KISS memorabilia -- including bobbleheads, cologne and action figures (not dolls!) -- has completely taken over an entire room of the house he shares with his wife. "The KISS office serves two purposes," Adam explains. "One is for my love and collection of KISS, and the other is our home office where we pay the bills -- usually that's what Stacie's role of the house is, so she goes in there for about five minutes, does what she needs to do and runs away real fast!"

Stacie is supportive of her husband's love of the band, but when it comes to the KISS shrine, she admits, "It would be nice just to balance it out to where I could have a place where I could spend some time -- to relax, to read -- so we could share the space." Rach's buddy Kristan Cunningham rolls up her sleeves and goes to work on her "favorite makeover ever," transforming the over-the-top theme room into a functional office for Stacie while still maintaining Adam's ability to pay homage to all things KISS.

Adam admits he was initially hesitant about letting outsiders handle his sacred collection. "I was a little nervous," he says, "but I was even more nervous when the first thing that Kristan touched actually broke! It was one of my GENE SIMMONS action figures and some of the chains and studs were falling off in her hand." Kristan defends herself by saying, "They have a lot of accessories happening!" To make it up to Adam, Rachael and Kristan have a big surprise for him. Watch the video to see Adam and Stacie's shocked reaction to his new KISS room, and the special gift he receives -- straight from GENE SIMMONS!

Click to enlarge BRUCE KULICK Reviews ACE FREHLEY Show
From: Kulick.net

Posted: March 10, 2008

It is not often that I get to see any shows when I travel for my Grand Funk gigs, unless we are on a festival bill with other bands of course. But this past Friday night was very different as I was able to see ACE FREHLEY and The Tubes in concert at the same showroom in Michigan that GFR would play on Saturday night.

I thought it would be a great double bill, as I knew The Tubes from years ago, being on a bill with them in the early 80's with Michael Bolton oddly enough. I caught the last half of the show, and "White Punks On Dope" is a fun song. Fee Waybill was quite entertaining in his 12 inch heels and crazy glam outfit. It is power pop with a crazy sense of humor. They ended the show with "Talk To Ya Later" another strong hit from the band.

But truthfully I was really there to see Ace like all the KISS fans in the crowd. I was aware that he was touring with a solid band, and that he was doing all the hits from his solo career and KISS. I had NOT seem him as a solo artist before so I was looking forward to the show. I was aware he wasn't feeling well that night as the sound man, Night Bob, is an old friend of mine. He said Ace was getting over a chest cold, but to be honest Ace didn't let it keep that him down.

Gene's partner, Shannon Tweed, was also by his side, glowing with pride and shooting video.

He's still got the goods to rock 'n' roll all night.

But don't expect ACE FREHLEY -- former guitarist for hard-rock legends KISS -- to be partying every day anymore.

Frehley, better known as Space Ace to the legions of soldiers in the KISS army, once made a habit of living up to both ends of that credo, eventually developing such a crippling addiction to drugs and booze that it threatened to permanently sideline his career.

From: Sunday Star Times

When he's not breathing fire, spitting fake blood or flicking his long red tongue about like a horny snake, KISS band-leader GENE SIMMONS likes nothing better than to tell jokes.

Unsurprisingly, given Simmons' legendary ego, today's joke is about himself.

"You ready?" he asks from his home in Beverly Hills. "Okay. God is sitting on his throne, and there's a knock on the door. He says `Who is it?' The door opens and there's Gandhi. God asks him what he believes in. Gandhi says `World peace.' God says `OK, fine, c'mon over here and sit on my left hand side.'

"There's another knock at the door. This time it's Mother Teresa. God asks her what she believes in and she says `Feeding the poor.' God says `OK, fine, whatever, come over here and sit on my right hand side.' There's a third knock on the door. Again, God asks who it is and what they believe, to which I reply `I'm GENE SIMMONS, and I believe you're sitting in my goddam chair'!".

Former KISS guitarist ACE FREHLEY says he’s laid down the law, forbidding booze or drugs among all band and crew members along for his solo tour, which landed in Canada on Monday.

The recovering alcoholic and drug user — whose days with the legendary rockers exemplified the sex-drugs-and-rock ’n’ roll cliche — says he has to keep such temptations at arm’s length.

"This time around, I’m real serious about my sobriety," Frehley says in a recent phone interview from the 21st floor of the Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls, N.Y.

Click to enlarge PAUL STANLEY Has Taken Painting To An Entirely New Level
From: The Boston Globe
Posted: March 5, 2008

Word that PAUL STANLEY is coming to Boston next month to show some of his paintings got us wondering what the KISS frontman could possibly know about art. So yesterday we called GENE SIMMONS's sidekick, and tracked him down tooling around LA in his black Mercedes sports car. Stanley, who'll be at the Wentworth Gallery in the Mall at Chestnut Hill on April 25 and 26, was remarkably well-spoken - erudite even - for a guy who's been singing "Rock and Roll All Nite" for 35 years.

What's going on with KISS?

I'm on my way to rehearsal in about an hour. We'll be playing in Australia and New Zealand next month, and then we're doing a really large tour of Europe. Stadiums in Stockholm and Helsinki sold out in 20 minutes.

In the new book "Rock to the Top: What I Learned about Success from the World's Greatest Rock Stars" by rock radio personality Dayna Steele, GENE SIMMONS, founding member of the legendary band KISS, says, "Rock and roll is hard work. To be successful you have to treat it like a business."

Having worked with author Dayna Steele in the past, Simmons was the perfect choice to write the foreword to "Rock to the Top", saying, "Rock stars may know how to live it up, but to get to the level where KISS is, requires sacrifice and business savvy. Dayna has spent years learning and developing business practices that she's just giving away in this book."

A top female rock and roll on-air personality, Steele spent years traveling the globe and interviewing countless bands and rock stars like Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ozzy Osbourne, David Bowie, Steven Tyler, Bruce Springsteen, Sammy Hagar and Bono . . . to name just a few!

Click to enlarge FREHLEY Fans Revel In KISS Heavy Show
From: The Buffalo News

As a founding member of KISS, ACE FREHLEY became the pivotal hard-rock guitar hero of the ’70s.

His iconic image, with a Gibson Les Paul dangling from his shoulders and a look of interstellar ecstasy on his face, adorned the bedroom wall of every self-respecting rocker-in-waiting during that era.

As influential as his work has been, Frehley’s "Rocket Ride" hasn’t been particularly smooth. He battled substance abuse problems, fought with his headstrong bandmates, tried several times to quit KISS, and finally did in the early ’80s.

From: PlaybackStl.com

Jendell's favorite son, ACE FREHLEY, brought his signature brand of rock 'n' roll lightening-bolt guitar theatrics to a nearly sold-out Pop's. Fans hungry for the "Space Ace" to tear up their favorite KISS classics and solo-era tracks did not disappear into the cold winter night disappointed in the least. Frehley kicked off his "Rocket Ride" show with "Rip It Out," the first of many tracks from his 1978 self-titled solo album to grace the set list. Without taking a breath, the tight four-piece band launched right into "Hard Times," a standout track from KISS' Dynasty release, then kicked things into gear with the powerful riffing of "Parasite" from Hotter Than Hell. His band—consisting of guitarist Derrek Hawkins, bassist Anthony Esposito, and drummer Scot Coogan—deserve a lot of the credit for keeping the pace of the show energetic and tight.

Much has been made of Frehley being clean and sober for the first time in many years, and his performance was remarkably fresh as a result. Because of this, the night was not without its unexpected moments, much to the delight of the crowd. After rallying the KISS Army with a mash-up of "Snow Blind" and "I Want You," Frehley dedicated the song "Breakout" to ERIC CARR, the song's co-author and KISS drummer who succumbed to cancer in 1991. A medley in the middle of the set featured the rarely heard KISS gem "Torpedo Girl," "Speeding Back to My Baby," and what appeared to be the unveiling of a brand spanking untitled new track.

Of course, this wouldn't be an ACE FREHLEY show without some of the traditional old-school touches that helped make him famous. "Shock Me" dovetailed into a smoking guitar solo centerpiece where smoke actually poured from the guitar. During "New York Groove," he gave a nod to the city with the "really cool arch" by changing the chorus to "St. Louis Groove"; he wrapped up the night with "Deuce," a song he "wrote in a subway in New York" when he was a 23-year-old starving musician. ACE FREHLEY may not have been wearing his platform boots at Pop's, but he certainly left a big footprint on his post-KISS comeback trail.
