A few days ago I took a sideline from the KISS Alive/35 tour and traveled to the Hughes & Kettner manufacturing facilities and headquarters in St. Wendel, Germany. The plan was to visit the great people that build the my TT Signature Edition HK amplifier and walk-through the vast manufacturing plant were they build HK amplifiers and HK Audio gear. The highlight was the amazing hospitality afforded to me by all the people there. After the tour of the plant, I did a meet & greet, signed posters and took photos with all the HK employees and then met 50 contest winners. It was a great day and I was proud to get a behind the scenes look at how the Hughes & Kettner family builds these fantastic amplifiers. Thanks again to everyone at Hughes & Kettner!

Guitarist BRUCE KULICK was recently interviewed live onstage at the 22nd annual NY/NJ KISS Expo by the mysterious Maul Stanley (a parody hybrid of Star Wars character Darth Maul and KISS guitarist PAUL STANLEY). Part serious interview and part comedy roast, the exchange has been transcribed and is now available online. In the first half of this two-part feature, Bruce discusses his dismissal from KISS, his work on the "Carnival of Souls" album and his memories of late KISS guitarist MARK ST. JOHN. A few excerpts from the interview follow:

Maul Stanley: Even though you officially joined KISS during the Animalize Tour, you did in fact play some guitar on the album itself. Were you brought in before or after MARK ST. JOHN and at the time did you know you were being considered for the band?

BRUCE KULICK: No, Mark had already been announced as the guitar player for "Animalize" when I was brought in. I know that he was having some health problems, plus I think Paul didn't like some of the stuff he was playing on one song, maybe a song and a half. That's when they asked me to come in and help out. As everyone knows, Mark then became ill so they asked me to fill in for him on tour. Along the way, they started to think that maybe I was the right man for the job and that's how my time in KISS got its start!

KISS US Shows This Summer

Following its massive 35th anniversary European tour, KISS will head home for a handful of US performances. The venerable rockers--who previously announced August dates in Sturgis, SD; and Kelseyville, CA--have since tacked on shows in Las Vegas and Stateline, NV. They launched their world tour in March with gigs in Australia and New Zealand, and segued into their first European trek in nearly 10 years. The full Alive/35 Tour schedule is posted at the band's website, with US dates listed below.

The current KISS lineup consists of mainstays GENE SIMMONS and PAUL STANLEY, along with guitarist TOMMY THAYER and drummer ERIC SINGER, who replace original members ACE FREHLEY and PETER CRISS, respectively.

In honor of their 35th anniversary, the masked quartet plans to perform the "KISS Alive" album in its entirety, as well as some rarely played classics, according to a press release.

Four additional musicians have been confirmed for the upcoming tribute album "KISS MY ANKH: A Tribute To VINNIE VINCENT." Former Adler's Appetite vocalist Sheldon Tarsha, former Alice Cooper guitarist Ryan Roxie, former Altaria bassist Marko Pukkila and current White Lion drummer Troy Patrick Farrell have collaborated on a new recording of the VINNIE VINCENT Invasion power ballad "That Time of Year." The original song was the lead single and MTV music video from the second Invasion album "All Systems Go," which featured the recording debut of vocalist Mark Slaughter. A 45-second sample of the new version is now available at the official "KISS MY ANKH" MySpace page. Tarsha, Roxie, Pukkila and Farrell join the previously announced Steve Brown (Trixter, Stereo Fallout), whose acoustic rendition of the PAUL STANLEY/VINNIE VINCENT composition "A Million To One" recently premiered on Eddie Trunk's nationally syndicated Friday Night Rocks radio program.

Though VINNIE VINCENT himself has not released any new material in over a decade, "KISS MY ANKH" will pay tribute to the undeniable musical legacy of the former KISS guitarist. Vinnie's compositions are widely regarded as a highlight of the KISS catalog and remain a staple of the live KISS set list. Included on the tribute will be selections from the three KISS albums to which Vinnie contributed, as well as the two albums he released with the VINNIE VINCENT Invasion. Kiss were amazing (and I'm not just saying this because I'm with them). They give the crowd everything you want - pyro, bombs, great light show (a photographers dream). ERIC SINGER gives KISS a solid sound - I wonder what Def Leppard would sound with someone like him. You get riffs, singalong anthems, guitar solos, posing. The end of the show is spectacular with Gene, Paul and TOMMY THAYER right at the front of the stage with what looks like World War III going on around them. Get good photos of Paul smashing his guitar. During, I think, Lick It Up they played Won't Get Fooled Again, Eric doing Keith Moon's drum fill perfectly. I could watch this every day.

I fly back to London with them straight after. As we land Doc says 'Nice landing' before we notice the jet isn't stopping and every time the pilot puts on the brakes the jet is turning sideways. The plane then keeps going on and on for about ten minutes around the runway until it finally stops very hard. By this point I am considering if I'd survive if I jumped. 'The hydraulics failed,' says the pilot, 'it is Friday the 13th.'

It’s hard to imagine anyone topping Download’s first night headliners, KISS. With pyrotechnics, fireworks and PAUL STANLEY flying out in to the audience on a zip-wire, it was a true spectacular of epic proportions.

They set the mood early and were lowered down to the stage on platforms and dressed in full costume and make-up, launched into the opening track 'Deuce'.

Playing their classic 'Alive' album in its entirety, GENE SIMMONS stuck his tongue out at every opportunity and the band did what they do best – entertain.

At one point Stanley teased the crowd by playing the opening riff of Stairway To Heaven, but joked "not tonight," as the audience erupted in laughter.

But the fireworks, quite literally, kept coming and when the show was over, Download was definitely left stunned and starry eyed.

Rockpages.gr: "Rock and Roll Over" is one of the most classic KISS covers ever! How do you feel about it after 32 years?

Michael Doret: When I did it, it wasn’t one of my favorites. Previously I had done a cover for "IDEA" magazine – a Japanese art magazine- that contained an article about my work. I liked what I had done for them so much that I tried to emulate the look for the KISS cover. However I didn’t think it was that good…just a good piece, but definitely not one of my best! I do enjoy all the attention it gets, even after all these years. I have had many young designers that came to me and said that this cover made them follow a career in graphic design. That makes me feel good.

The Buzz Performs RARAN

A great charity that I'm involved with in Southeast Missouri call 18 FORE Life (www.18forelife.com) helps area families deal with the financial burden of cancer. Each year the foundation puts on a golf event to raise money. The night before the event a banquet is held with a great dinner, guest speakers and musical entertainment provided by The BUZZ. The drummer of The BUZZ is Scott Kruse, who happens to also be the chairman of the charity. Scott is an old KISS fan and as you will see, he created a new KISS fan. Members of KISS were regular guests on Cleveland's WMMS throughout the seventies and early eighties. GENE SIMMONS was a natural on the air and he had a standing invitation from me to be a guest DJ whenever he was in town.

This video has Denny Sanders moonlighting on WEWS-TV’s Afternoon Exchange in 1978, with GENE SIMMONS at Tony Isabella’s Cosmic Comics at the Colonial Arcade in downtown Cleveland. Even though Gene was in full costume and make-up regalia, he was unusually subdued and candid in this interview.

Statement from Paul: A KISS clone reality show? First of all, contrary to what was said by anyone, there is no signed deal. Secondly, if we were to do a "KISS II", and I don't rule that out, it would be in addition to, and never in place of KISS. If we were to do it, I know it would be done in a ground breaking way and would be tremendously entertaining. KISS has always defined itself by the rules we break, so what's the big surprise? We are in the middle of our biggest and most successful tour of Europe ever, playing to over a half million people, and neither KISS or I have any plans to stop afterwards!

First Halifax KISS Expo This Saturday

She doesn’t have as much memorabilia as GENE SIMMONS has in his home — seen regularly on the show Family Jewels — but Heather Churchill’s house still has an impressive shrine to KISS.

"It’s the music, the show, everything about them," said the Lower Sackville resident, who has everything from KISS perfume to face-painted teddy bears. "I like the fact that 35 years after they formed, they are still strong. It’s the whole experience, so to speak."

She and other member of the KISS army are invading the Quality Inn & Suites in Halifax this Saturday for an expo dedicated to the painted-faced rock band.

NRK.no recently spoke with KISS' GENE SIMMONS where he discussed fans' biggest fear for some years now - that KISS are indeed planning to keep KISS running and touring after founders PAUL STANLEY and GENE SIMMONS decide to take off the make-up for good.

During a familiar rant by Simmons about how KISS could go on forever, NRK's journalist asked jokingly if the band would consider looking for replacements for Simmons and Stanley in a tv-show, on the model of American Idol. "We have already signed the contract, and it is going to go through in a couple of months" was Simmons' reply.

Co-founder PAUL STANLEY was not very happy to hear about his bandmate's statement regarding KISS' future. "These things are typical. Gene says something as if it was a fact, but there is no signed deal. The future has many possibilities. Will it happen next week? No! Am I opposed to the idea? Of course not" he retorted. Paul also stated that the members of VELVET REVOLVER were planning a similar stunt to find the replacement for lead singer Scott Weiland, who was fired at the end of the band's European tour earlier this year. However, the band decided not to do it, according to Stanley, because of Slash' wish to remain cool and credible to his fans. "I don’t have to be that cool", Stanley smiles.

Hanging With PAUL STANLEY

Members of the KISS Army, as the rock band's fans call themselves, are mobilizing. They strut past the Bloomingdale's makeup ladies in the Mall at Chestnut Hill, wearing leather vests and concert T-shirts as they make their way to singer PAUL STANLEY's art show at the Wentworth Gallery at the end of April.

Stanley, who is in the middle of KISS's 35th anniversary world tour, is setting aside time for private meetings with anyone who buys one of his acrylic paintings or prints, priced from $1,500 to more than $50,000.

The crowd is a motley crew: a pudgy guy with a Red Sox cap and buzz cut, a blonde who could pass for an aging groupie, an art collector with a turtleneck. The brightly lit gallery is located next to a Sephora skincare shop, which is fitting for the primped and groomed singer known for his black-and-white "Starchild" makeup.

"Friday Night Rocks" Gives Sneak Preview of VINNIE VINCENT Tribute

Steve Brown's new recording of the underground KISS track "A Million To One," a song co-written by PAUL STANLEY and VINNIE VINCENT, premiered during the May 30th episode of nationally syndicated radio program Friday Night Rocks. In the studio with DJ Eddie Trunk were Steve and his Trixter bandmate Mark "Gus" Scott, who were there to promote the upcoming Trixter reunion. Also discussed was Steve's new cover of "A Million To One," which will receive its official release on the upcoming tribute album "KISS MY ANKH: A Tribute To VINNIE VINCENT."

"It's just an amazing concept and that's why I signed on to the project," remarked Brown during the broadcast. "I mean, who would think to do a VINNIE VINCENT tribute album? I just thought that was so funny! But Vinnie was a great guitar player and a great songwriter."

"You can laugh all you want about the fact that there's a VINNIE VINCENT tribute album," offered Trunk, "but he was a huge part of the reason why KISS had a career in the '80s. He wrote "Lick It Up" and all that great stuff. No matter what state the band is in now, Vinnie was a huge contributor to their success."
