From: Tod Howarth
Posted: December 24, 2008

Former Frehley's Comet member Tod Howarth has uploaded an acoustic re-recording of the classic FREHLEY'S COMET song "Time Ain't Running Out" on his MySpace page at http://myspace.com/todhowarth, and posted the following blog:

Finally, amidst all of the things going on around here you'd think that I'd had this relatively easy tune done a long time ago....but the 'Time Ain't Runnin' Out' acoustic version is posted and able to download freely. It would be kind of cheesy to say 'Merry Christmas! Here's your present' but considering the timing, why not?

I hope that you Frehley's Comet fans enjoy it, it was done for you, with the idea coming from friend/fan Brian Sword, he has had many that I will utilize this coming year.

I will be back to work on the heavy rock CD after the New Year, as this time of the season is busy for most everyone. I've mentioned it before but can't help to say it again, I have many responsibilities besides music so it's taking me a painfully long time to get the new CD done.

MERRY CHRISTMAS to everyone, let's hope the New Year beats us all up a little less - I am not impervious to what's happening in our world so I'm not fooling myself in thinking that every-one's life is going along smoothly.

Until later, I'll be working and creating with a fresh sense of melodic necessity.

Best to you all, and thank you all so very, very much...

Tod

On behalf of McKinley Children's Center’s Board of Directors and most importantly the kids, I would like to express our appreciation to "ERIC SINGER" for his recent visit to our center.

The children that live in the residential program come to McKinley because they have been victims of abuse, abandonment and neglect. The kids in our Canyon View School have learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, behavior disorders, Autistic Spectrum disorder and other health impairments that have not been successful in a more traditional school setting. ERIC SINGER took the time to stop by for a few hours and visit with these children.

It was amazing how he interacted with the 160 kids that came to the dining hall during their lunch to find "ERIC SINGER" handing out t-shirts to them. In addition, his friend Rhonda Rudolph handed out her children’s books. The kids were so excited to receive the tee-shirts and books that they distributed. It was amazing how he made each child feel special and he took time to personally talk to them. Afterwards, he took two boys that had received a recent award out to lunch.

Here are a few photos of Paul from the invitation-only Gibson Guitar launch of their new guitar, Dark Fire. The launch featured a performance from Steel Panther, the LA based glam metal parody band, known for their energetic live show that pays tribute to the heyday of 80's glam metal.

On the way out the door with his son Evan, the band called out, asking Paul to get up and sing. They launched into "Lick It Up" and the place went crazy. In top form, Paul tore the place up! Afterwards, they hammed it up for some "80's style" photos!

Thrilled to announce my good friend and original KISS lead guitarist ACE FREHLEY will be in studio this Friday night to co-host this years edition of the Original Merry KISSmas special! Ace co-hosted a few years ago and we had a blast and it made the show that much more special. I'll do my best to provide a balance of music and interview along with your live calls for the Space Ace! KISS giveaways, KISS music, and the one and only ACE FREHLEY all this Friday night LIVE for the Orignal Merry KISSmas Special. Hear it on Q104.3 NYC from 11PM-2AM EST or live online at www.q1043.com. Of course this show will air the following weekend as well on all affiliate stations. It's been about 15 years now that I started doing this all KISS special years before anyone else and they are always very anticipated shows. I first had the idea because as a life long KISS fan I have always been, and continue to be, frustrated at how little of their catalog of music gets played on the radio. I also was always into KISS first and foremost for the music, something that rarely gets talked about or gets the credit it deserves. Even though all eras of the band are played regularly on my shows for years, I take this one time each year to spotlight nothing but KISS since it was the band and music that really set me on my path as a rock fan. This one will be extra special once again with Ace joining us! Also, Ace has launched his official site at www.acefrehley.com and he will be my guest on the new episode of That Metal Show on VH1 Classic premiering this Saturday night at 11PM ET/PT. So screw the Rock & Roll Hall Of Shame, it's KISSmas this Friday night only on the Eddie Trunk Show on Q104.3 NYC!

PS: I will also be hosting a Merry Kissmas special on TV on VH1 Classic Christmas day

On Saturday, December 13th, GENE SIMMONS, along with Sophie Tweed-Simmons and Shannon Tweed, performed the National Anthem at a L.A. Derby Dolls roller derby bout.

About The LA Derby Dolls: Founded in September 2003, the L.A. Derby Dolls is the premiere all-female, banked-track, quad-skating rock 'n' roller derby league in the Southern California area. Athletic and alluring, the L.A. Derby Dolls strive to be the fastest, most fearless ladies in fishnets. Within the league there are four teams: The Fight Crew, The Sirens, The Tough Cookies, and the Varsity Brawlers. Click to enlarge Rush's Alex Lifeson On Touring With KISS
From: UGO Music

Posted: December 14, 2008

I recently interviewed Rush's Alex Lifeson and I asked him a few questions about memories of touring w/ KISS back in '75. Here's an except:

Looking back on the early years, I’ve read that Rush toured with KISS in 1975.

Alex Lifeson: That was our first kind of "big tour." We had started touring in '74 - we were opening for a few different bands. But the KISS tour...and this was the start of their career, as well. The tour that we did with them, we opened for them, and we were playing 3,000-5,000 seat halls. They were a new band, and no one had really heard of them. So we did a lot of work with them - we probably toured with them for 60 or 70 shows. Back in those days, we were doing 200 to 250 shows a year anyways. But we toured with them over a fairly long period of time. We were very close and we had a lot of fun. We were both young bands, and quite different from each other - I think that was a nice compliment playing together. But like a lot of things, you sort of drift apart over the years. We stayed in touch for a while, but not so much in the past ten years or so.

Any specific memories of that tour?

Alex Lifeson: It was always a crazy scene at the end of tours - they’d plaster us with cream pies, there was always some sort of surprise lurking around a corner! And certainly, there were some fun nights - parties and things like that. They lived a little more of a "rock n' roll lifestyle" than we did.

From: Teddy Wilson Reports

Posted: December 13, 2008

Teddy Wilson from 'The Circuit' here. Got to interview another one of my heroes last week, the God of Thunder himself, GENE SIMMONS (.the fact that they call what I do a "job" is pretty ridiculous).

I've been a HUGE fan of KISS for tons of years. First time I heard them was at about age 9, when my best friend back in my old suburban Ottawa 'hood broke out his Fisher Price record-player and played me his Dad's beat-up "Destroyer" LP. From the first chords of the seminal "Detroit Rock City", I was hooked.

Suffice it to say, interviewing him was a total 'trip' (as the kids say these days). As though he needed to start yet another business, Gene was in Canada last week touting the launch of his new record label, Simmons Records, for which he's partnered with Universal Music Canada and former MP and auto-parts baroness Belinda Stronach (I know.WTF?!).

Click to enlarge Monster Circus Show Recap
From: Kulick.net

Posted: December 12, 2008

Well the big day with MONSTER CIRCUS came and went fast, and it was simply amazing. No one really knew what to expect (including me) but the idea of having great players rocking on stage backed by a totally cool Vegas style experience was pulled off without a glitch at the HILTON in Las Vegas on December 9th.

Monster Circus was formed by Tony Montana (who played bass in Great White but is also a fantastic singer and lead guitarist), Rudy Sarzo (Ozzy, Whitesnake, Quiet Riot and many more) and John Corabi, who needs no introduction for my fans. These three asked Bobby Rock (Nelson, Slaughter, VINNIE VINCENT Invasion) to play drums and myself to join them on stage, with Dee Snider (Twisted Sister) and Dave Kushner (Velvet Revolver) as the special guests to play 9 classic hits along with a great show that included fire breathers, pyro, dancers and tight rope style performances in a totally Vegas over-the-top manner.

The Hilton stage, home to Barry Manilow of late but most famous for ELVIS PRESLEY from his VEGAS years, was simply put an amazing place to perform. Using Elvis's dressing room and getting a tour of some of the private rooms built for Elvis for his famous performances was quite a thrill. The band rehearsed in LA for a week and then it was off to Vegas for a day and a half of rehearsal with the dancers etc. It was a miracle how quickly it all came together.

Billboard.com says: KISS has reversed course and decided to hit the studio next year to record their first new album since 1998's "Psycho Circus." Guitarist PAUL STANLEY will produce.

In recent years, bassist GENE SIMMONS has been vocal about his lack of enthusiasm about making a new album, which he attributes to the state of the business.

"The record industry is in such a mess," he said in November 2007. "There is nothing in me that wants to go in there and do new music. How are you going to deliver it? How are you going to get paid for it if people can just get it for free?"

Returning Adler's Appetite vocalist Sheldon Tarsha, White Lion drummer Troy Patrick Farrell and Danger Danger frontman Ted Poley are amongst those commenting on their involvement in the newly released tribute album "KISS MY ANKH: A Tribute To VINNIE VINCENT." All contributing artists have provided their thoughts on the project, ranging from their personal memories of VINNIE VINCENT to commentaries on their respective tracks (samples of which are available at the official "KISS MY ANKH" MySpace page http://www.myspace.com/KissMyAnkh). A few representative comments follow:

Sheldon Tarsha ("That Time of Year"): "I think I was 10 years old when I got the first VINNIE VINCENT Invasion album so I'm excited and honored to be a part of this tribute. For our version of 'That Time of Year,' we performed the song basically the way it was written, each of us embellishing it with our own unique style. The original is a great song with fantastic production, so I listened to it very closely and chose to sing the lead vocals in a harder, raspier tone."

Troy Patrick Farrell ("That Time of Year"): "Since it was difficult to experiment with Marko Pukkila being in Finland and Ryan Roxie in Sweden, our best bet was to stick with the original formula that worked so well in 1988. Tarsha hit every note and not many people can pull off Mark Slaughter! We didn't tune down for this song, either. Personally, I really dig the VVI albums and I think Vinnie was a freak on guitar. Hey Vinnie, I hope our version of 'That Time Of Year' doesn't keep you in hiding longer!"

From: FuryRocks.com

It’s the last show in Germany tonight. How was the tour?

Eric: ‘Oh very good. We are playing in Berlin tonight and tomorrow in Brno, Czech Republic and that’s the last show of the year and the whole tour. I am actually very glad, because it has been a long year. I worked a lot, I was working between KISS and Alice Cooper and I did both tours. I am not complaining, because the world economy is going way down and for me I had a very good year personally. But I am also glad to have a break. The German crowd is very good, I have been to Europe three times this year already. Once with KISS and the shows with Alice Cooper and Whitesnake have been very good as well.’

You grew up during the beat generation. In that time the drums were recorded with only two microphones and the sound was, let’s say, slight. Nowadays drummers have much more possibilities. Where do you see further capabilities?

Click to enlarge Brothers Rock Star And Super Star Do Their Homework
From: Super And Rock Star

Posted: December 9, 2008

Well, here we are again. Rock Star and Super Star, faced with having to meet again with the great PAUL STANLEY at the Wentworth Gallery in La Jolla, CA. This time, however, our meeting was a bit different. Sure, every time we get a chance to see him, we go buy a piece of his art. His work is beautiful; we cannot deny this. So, we buy it. But we also go with an agenda. Over the years, in countless interviews, he has taught his fans that if you want something, go out and get it! We are opportunists, and our desire to work with such a fine and accomplished musician can only come to fruition if we are willing to work hard enough for it. We are sure that after last night's meeting with him, he sees this now more than ever. The last time we had an opportunity to see him was during the dinner we were able to attend with him in Washington. (See here for story) There he jokingly gave us a homework assignment, which I don't think he thought we would take so seriously. However, we did. More on that in a bit…

Throughout the years Paul has unknowingly given Rock Star and me a sense of street smarts. He has also given us a keen sense of marketing and because of this we are able to apply what he has instilled in us into our own ventures. (see http://www.rockandsuperstar.com) For this, we owe a great deal of gratitude to Paul and what better way to thank him than to have a custom guitar made for him! Rock and I knew this Washburn PAUL STANLEY KISS PS8500 LTD Preacher Guitar that we had professionally covered with Swarovski crystals would be a hit, but I had no idea how much so until he bent down, opened up that guitar case, and I saw his eyes light up. I knew right then and there that we had taken the right initiative and done something so magical for him that we made our mark in Kisstory and gave him the thank you he deserves. We did this on behalf of not only ourselves, but for all the KISS fans out there that might not have the means to do so. We could tell this meant something to him. Little did he know how much it meant to us. He immediately picked it up and told us he'd be playing it on stage soon and with that we knew we'd given him the perfect thank you gift. So again, Paul, thank you for giving us the confidence to believe in ourselves. Thank you.

With this trip to La Jolla, we had also planned a surprise for someone else special in our lives. This special person would be Rock Star's fiancé. It was her birthday and what better gift to give her than a self-portrait, painted by none other than PAUL STANLEY himself. Paul is a very genuine and sincere man. His love for his music, art, and his fans go way above and beyond what I have seen in working with some other musicians in this business. This passion is also reflective in his paintings; this is why we knew he would be the perfect man to commission for this job. Like everything else we do, we approached the right people, took the right steps, and made what seems an almost impossible request come to life and to reality. I have to admit, I was not fully sure what to expect when Paul unveiled the portrait he painted to her last night at the gallery. Sure, I knew it would be great, just like his other works. But I did not expect it to be so magnificent, so well thought out, filled with spectacular colors and painted obviously with such emotion that it was able to make even me a bit teary-eyed. Rock's fiancé loved the piece and she is looking forward to hanging it over the fireplace, Paul. Thank you again. Just like her, it is beautiful.

GENE SIMMONS, ever the promotional multitasker. Paid and flown in to E-town to cut the ribbon on a new Future Shop while simultaneously promoting his new Guitar Hero axe, he's also in the city to scout new talent for his record label.

Simmons sees himself as an early prospector of our country's untapped, future musical gold mine, internationally.

Working with Universal, he wants to find bands who posses both that undefinable "it" but also the egoless willingness to let an experienced rocker like him call not just some, but all the important shots.

Your mom and dad rocked out to them in the '70s, your grandparents held sheer contempt for their heathen souls, you’ve seen them on retrospective TV documentaries, and you’ve heard their music on classical radio. KISS has been breathing fire, spitting blood, rock 'n' rollin’ all night and partying every day since the early '70s, and every woman on your side of the family was probably invited backstage, courtesy of GENE SIMMONS.

The demonized bad boy of rock is legendary with the opposite sex. A quick look around pop culture websites will show you that this man is the Wilt Chamberlain of music -- he’s been glorified for sleeping with over 5,000 women. Whatever your opinion is, the man has been seducing women for almost 40 years. Here are a few tips from iconic Player GENE SIMMONS.

NORTHERN LIGHT ORCHESTRA highlights majestic, orchestrated rock music featuring soaring vocals, incredible guitar solos worthy of true "guitar hero" status, and pounding rhythms sure to impress and invigorate the baby boomer generation that grew up on what is today classic rock! Combined with the talents of executive producer and longtime record mogul Russ Regan, (responsible for over 800 million record sales with such artists as NEIL DIAMOND, ELTON JOHN, and BARRY WHITE as well as soundtracks such as "Flashdance" and "Jesus Christ Superstar"), NLO is slated to become a seasonal live performance and recording entity that provides the very best in entertainment!

The brainchild of re-mix keyboardist/ writer Brian Stewart (BACKSTREET BOYS, ROBERT PLANT, HALL & OATES, POE) and produced by industry veteran Ken Mary (HOUSE OF LORDS, TRIK TURNER, ALICE COOPER, BEACH BOYS), NLO is designed to create a total musical experience combining the powerful drama of Webber and Rice's "Jesus Christ Superstar" with the emotionally moving musical styles of ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA, YES, and KANSAS. Vocalists and musicians appearing on NLO have been responsible for the sale of over 200 million albums worldwide and include members and former members of household names such as the BEACH BOYS, SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE, ALICE COOPER, SURVIVOR, STEELY DAN, FIREHOUSE, MEGADETH, SISTER SLEDGE, QUIET RIOT, VANILLA FUDGE, WINGER, BOB CARLISLE, GUNS N' ROSES, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD, KISS, HOUSE OF LORDS, and WHITESNAKE, just to name a few. Live performances will highlight a spectacular light and video presentation, theatrical movements, as well as incredible musicianship all assembled to tell the story of the birth of Jesus Christ over two thousand years ago.

The new nine-track release of NORTHERN LIGHT ORCHESTRA, "The Spirit of Christmas", provides merely a hint of what is to come, with nine additional tracks already in production for next year!

We continue our year-long KISS special feature with the 19th interview of a KISS-related figure. This week, Bruce Foster, the pianist behind the excellent middle section of "Nothin’ To Lose" remembers that session in 1973! Here’s an excerpt:

Rockpages.gr: You played piano on the now KISS classic tune "Nothin' To Lose". What do you remember from the recordings of that song?

Bruce Foster: Adding piano to "Nothin' to Lose" was an after thought of Richie Wise, the producer. I had finished playing on some Gladys Knight tracks and other artists. Richie was then producing, so he had a chance to hear my range of playing styles, one of which was like classic Jerry Lee Lewis. That may have inspired him to combine that element with "Nothin’ To Lose". I performed that piece as an overdub several days after the initial recording date. I think it was a good call because it really moved the track to a place that everyone seemed to like! I got so carried away on getting the right approach on the barrel house glissandos that my fingers started to bleed. I recall GENE SIMMONS coming into the room & being impressed that there was blood on the piano keys. Whenever I saw him for years after that he would kiddingly inspect my hands to see if I ever figured out how to get the right effect without maiming myself!
