Tommy Thayer Q&A
From: KISSHell/Metal Hell Int'l
Posted: April 28, 2010
1) What's the latest news on the Hottest Band In The World?
TOMMY THAYER: We're leaving for Europe next week. We've been rehearsing for several weeks now and we're very, very excited about the new 2010 Sonic Boom tour.
2) On SONIC BOOM? How did you generally approach writing your solos?
TT: Some solos I worked out on my own, on others Paul helped me with direction. I usually had an idea where I was going to go with each solo before we recorded them.
3) How would you compare writing with Gene to writing with Paul?

Gene Simmons Interview Part 2
From: RushOnRock.com
Posted: April 28, 2010
With just five days to go before we experience the Sonic Boom Over Europe tour in all of it's pyro-fuelled glory we've got the second part of our exclusive chat with genial Gene Simmons.
Still going strong after all these years and boasting thigh muscles men half his age would kill for, The Demon talks Donald Trump, William Shakespeare and Family Jewels - and that's just for starters.
We can't wait to see the man himself on action in Newcastle on Sunday and we'll have a review of that show right here within hours of the final curtain falling.
For now sit back and enjoy a few more words of wisdom from an individual who has truly brightened up these pages during the past fortnight.
rushonrock: Do you ever relax?
GS: If I'm loping about then I'm not as good in KISS. I'm like an athlete who, when he's not competing, is working out all the time. If you don't work out you lose your edge when it comes to competition and for me it's the activity that gets the heart pumping. I am a 60-year-old with the thigh muscles of a man half my age. Use it or lose it - that's my philosophy. Your lungs, your brain, whatever.
rushonrock: So just how do you keep on top of everything with all your various projects on the boil?

Paul Stanley: Family Man, Rock Star, And Painter
From: Celebrity Extra Online
Posted: April 16, 2010
We all know Paul Stanley, lead singer of KISS. But you might not recognize him without his makeup. What you might be surprised to know is that Paul is more than a musician: He is a prolific painter whose works are shown around the country and sell for big money. I was thrilled to get the chance to catch up with Paul, and he told me all about his artwork, KISS's latest album and their recent appearance on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
Celebrity Extra: Thank you so much for talking with me. I'll get right into it so you can start your morning.
Paul Stanley: My morning starts when my 3-and-a-half-year-old walks in the room.
CE: That's true. I'm thinking about the rock-star lifestyle, but you're actually a family man as well.
Gear Nerd - Bass With Gene Simmons
From: RoadRunner Records
Posted: April 15, 2010
May 1st brings not only the Band Holiday Weekend, but it also heralds the begining of the KISS UK headline arena tour in support or their current album SONIC BOOM.
When the guys were in the UK recently on a promotion trip in support of the album and the announcement of the tour dates, we took the opportunity to sit down and have a chat with bassist Gene Simmons about his bass playing career, influences and set up...
RR UK: So, Did you start playing the bass first, was that your first instrument?
Gene: No, my first instrument was guitar, self taught and I did it like anybody else in the prehistoric days - we took albums, which went 33 rpm, and we slowed them down. So grrrrrr rrrrr [sound of slowed down record],like that. But then I could pick up the notes and the chords and copy them, and then try to play along with them, but of course when the record sped up to full speed it changed, didn't it, the tonality went up! Ha! But in either case that's how I learned how to play guitar, and then of course meeting other guitar players who showed me voicings and Sus4 and so on. And then, I saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show and thought 'gee, this is a good job, girls scream, you get to dress funny, wear your hair kinda kooky', and that was it it, it's better than being a plumber. So I wanted to do that and then I noticed when I first went out meeting other guys in other bands, there were a million guitar players but no bass players. So I decided to pick up the bass, because I'd get into a band easier.

HIM Frontman Ville Vallo Cites Animalize As A Main Influence
From: Canada.com
Posted: April 12, 2010
Valo said he fully understands that some fans will always identify HIM with one of its earlier albums. He noted that the first KISS album he heard was the 1984 release Animalize, which came well after albums like Aliveand Destroyer, often considered signature KISS albums. But to Valle,Animalize is the definitive KISS album.
"That was my introduction to KISS, so in a way that's my favourite album," he said. "Usually the one you heard the first, that's your favourite album. So in our band's case, some people have heard an album called Razorblade Romance (released in 1999 in Europe and 2002 in North America) first, and that makes it the special album for them. We're not trying to compete with that album. We're trying to compete with ourselves and trying to make our current emotions translate as well as possible through sonic means." Message From Bruce
From: Kulick.net
Posted: April 12, 2010
I was honored to be a guest at the Slash performance on the George Lopez show taped in Burbank last night. I got there early enough to say hello to the band, hang out in the green room, and chat with both of Slash's singers that taped for the show. Everyone knows Slash's new CD has many guests, and Andrew Stockdale from Wolfmother is one of them. He is from Australia and we got a chance to talk about my visits to his town of Brisbane in the past. Great guy and a unique singer. I think Andrew's band really has one foot in the past and one in the present, and he told me that they will be doing some shows with KISS in Europe very soon. Myles Kennedy, the singer for Alter Bridge was also there, and he was extremely cool to chat with as well. We have mutual guitar buddy friends and we caught up about his band and the fact he got to sing two songs on Slash's new disc. (Which is great BTW, go get it!)
I gave Slash my BK3 disc, and after thanking me he joked about the fact my dear friend Brent Fitz, who is drumming for him, didn't have a mention on the special guest sticker on the CD. I said with a smile on my face, "Well, after touring the world with you he will!" Brent and I have a long history (Union, and of course all my solo discs) so I was very proud to see him jamming with Slash. Todd Kerns, who I have jammed with many times in Vegas and who appeared live with me for my BK3 release party along with Brent, is now playing bass for Slash and I was happy to see him rocking out on the show.

Peter Criss's Public Awareness Of Male Breast Cancer Helps Others
From: Medical News Today
Posted: April 12, 2010
Peter Criss said that thanks to an early diagnosis he was successfully treated for breast cancer in 2008. He urged men to be aware that breast cancer was not an exclusively female disease and if they spot a lump they should not be ashamed and go to the doctor straight away.
In the case of Scott Cunningham and his father, they said they were not put off by the stigma of it being a "female disease." They said they were not bothered by those stereotypes.
"Some men would hang their heads, but no way, I am a man," said Cunningham.

Gene Simmons Talks Liverpool, Beatles
From: Echo Magazine
Posted: April 11, 2010
ON a leather sofa in the library of his hotel room sits Gene Simmons, the blood-spitting, fire-breathing, tongue-wagging frontman of KISS.
It's the morning after the band's fanclub show at the Islington Academy, and he's sipping a cup of tea. It's so dark I can barely see him, but he repeatedly calls on room service to dim the lights, to the point where I can just make out his features, minus that famous make-up.
"That's better," he sighs. "Come and sit here, next to me."
The show in the 1,000 capacity Academy was like seeing a quart squeezed into a pint pot. The KISS show fits an arena, and Gene, 60, has more than enough charisma for 10,000 fans to share. So sitting two feet away from him is like watching a film with my nose pressed against the cinema screen.

Black Diamond Dust With Kenny Kerner
From: KISSfaq.com
Posted: April 10, 2010
Kenny Kerner happens to be a very key figure in KISStory. It was Kerner who came across the KISS demo (on reel-to-reel, no less) one Friday evening in Neil Bogart's office in 1973. Extremely impressed with what he heard, he returned the following Monday and advised Bogart to sign the band. Kerner had uncovered the proverbial gem amid the pile of rubbish. And it would be he and production partner Richie Wise who would be brought on board to produce the self-titled 1974 album.
When offering his summary on KISS' debut, Kerner is direct. "The first album is a classic, classic album," he declares, suggesting "KISS" belongs alongside the likes of "Black Sabbath," Led Zeppelin," "Van Halen," and "Appetite For Destruction" in the pantheon of classic rock debuts. With grade-A material such as "Deuce," "Strutter," "Firehouse," "Black Diamond," "Cold Gin, and "100,000 Years," he has a point.
KISS entered Bell Sound Studios in New York in autumn 1973 to record their Casablanca debut (with "Kissin' Time" being added months later). The recording was completed in blind-quick fashion, just six days. Kerner and Wise helmed the sessions, helping the band arrange and refine the songs to the punchy succinct forms that have become all-too familiar to KISS fans. They would go on to produce the band's follow-up, "Hotter Than Hell," an album Kerner isn't as keen on. "I don't like the songs as much," he says. However, the production team was not brought back for 1975's "Dressed To Kill," a move Kerner explains had more to do with things such as control and conflicts of interest, as opposed to lack of record sales and requisite creative differences.

Gene Simmons Settles Indy Car Racing League-Related Lawsuit

Gene Simmons has settled a lawsuit with a man who claims that he interfered with a marketing deal he had with the Indy Car Racing League. Allan Browne filed the lawsuit seeking unspecified damages from the KISS bassist and two of his business associates in September 2008 in Los Angeles Superior Court. While the case has been resolved, terms of the settlement were not divulged.
Simmons has worked with Indy Car Racing in the past and co-wrote a song for the league titled "I Am Indy."

East Coast Invasion From Outer Space With Ace Frehley Guitarist Todd Youth
From: Lip Service Magazine
Posted: April 6, 2010
Greetings Lip Servants, Todd Youth here, with my first attempt at doing a blog. Some of you might know me already and, if you don't, here's a quick rundown. I've been playing in bands since I was 12, my first band I was ever in was Agnostic Front way back in 1983. I spent many years in Murphy's Law, D-Generation, and Danzig, did some shows playing guitar for Motorhead, Glen Campbell, The Chelsea Smiles, and most recently I've been playing guitar with none other than ACE FREHLEY!!!!
Anybody who knows me, knows what a big KISS fan and more importantly what a big Ace fan I am. Ace is the reason I started playing guitar many years ago. He has been the biggest influence on my playing ever since my Dad took me to see KISS on the Dynasty tour at Madison Square Garden, so when I got the call to tour with Ace in Australia a few months back I jumped at the chance. I've known the bass player, Anthony Esposito (ex Lynch Mob), and drummer, Scotty Cougan (Brides of Destruction), forever, so it was a no brainer. We had a great time down under so I decided to stay on board.
I help the crew guys set up, run a few songs, and wait for Ace to show up. Seems he missed his flight the day before and won't be getting to the rehearsal till about 7p.m. One thing I've learned working with him is that you are know operating on Ace time. Anthony, me and Scotty run a few songs we haven't done live yet and, before you know it, Ace Frehley has landed on planet earth. We decide what the set is going to be for the run and add 2 songs we hadn't done before, Into The Void, which is off of Psycho Circus and Pain In The Neck, off Ace's new record "Anomaly." (If you haven't checked out, Anomaly yet, do yourself a favor and pick it up, it's right up there with Ace's 1978 solo record.) We do a quick run through of the set, pack up the gear and head to the Mohegan Sun for a night of r-n-r.

Bruce Kulick At The Rock & Roll Emporium April 25th
From: The Rock & Roll Emporium
Posted: April 4, 2010
The Rock & Roll Emporium will be hosting a clinic and meet and greet with legendary guitarist Bruce Kulick on April 25th, 2010 to coincide with the release of his latest CD, "BK3."
Kulick, who first gained notoriety as a member of Meat Loaf's Bat Out Of Hell touring band, may be best known for his twelve years (1984-1996) as lead guitarist of KISS, during which time he appeared on nine gold, two platinum and one multi-platinum KISS albums, including Animalize, Asylum, and Revenge. It is, however, the wealth of experience he has gained in his 13 post-KISS years that shines through on BK3.
The album takes listeners for quite a ride over its eleven songs...from the frenetic and anger-fuelled "Fate" (co-written by Kevin Churko, known for his work with Ozzy Osbourne) to the philosophical and uplifting "Life." Never one to mind sharing the spotlight with other talented musicians, Kulick invited several guest artists to appear on BK3, including Gene Simmons of KISS on the anthemic "Ain't Gonna Die," the late Doug Fieger (The Knack) on the soon-to-be pop classic "Dirty Girl," Nick Simmons (son of Gene) on "Hand of the King," former Union cohort John Corabi on the moody "No Friend Of Mine," Tobias Sammet (EdGuy, Avantasia) and Eric Singer (KISS) on the fierce "I'm The Animal", and guitar legend Steve Lukather (Toto) on the exciting instrumental "Between The Lines."
KISS Rocker's New Gig: Selling Life Insurance
From: The Wall Street Journal
Posted: April 3, 2010
You might buy car insurance from a gecko or a cave man, but would you consider buying life insurance from a blood-spitting hellion in leather pants?
Gene Simmons, the 60-year-old co-founder of the rock band KISS, hopes so. If you are wealthy enough, that is.
Mr. Simmons's new group, Cool Springs Life Equity Strategy, was launched last month to tap into a lucrative demographic: entertainers, sports stars and other people with a net worth of $20 million or more who need a life-insurance policy of $10 million or greater. The firm's founders, who include David R. Carpenter, formerly of insurance powerhouse Transamerica, believe there is big opportunity to sell jumbo insurance policies to rich people.
The only glitch: Cool Springs is based in Franklin, Tenn., near Nashville but far from the entertainment meccas on the East and West coasts. Last September, the founders realized they needed a rainmaker.
So they reached out to a fire breather.
