From: Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

It's not easy to step in and replace a legend.

When Tommy Thayer was asked to assume lead guitar duties for KISS -- replacing the legendary Ace Frehley -- those were some big boots to fill.

Big, shiny silver platform spaceman boots.

"When I came into the band eight years ago, I was well aware of that," says Thayer. "And I like to say to people, 'Good things take time.' I didn't expect to win over the world the first concert out. But I've always been confident and I know KISS inside out."

It's a huge leap from the Cottage Restaurant in Ayer to the worldwide stage - or is it?

The man responsible for managing the careers of some major musical acts has died at the age of 66. Bill Aucoin, a native of Ayer, Massachusetts, died in a Florida hospital of complications from prostate cancer on Monday, June 28.

Locals might recall him as the son of the original Cottage Restaurant owner William Aucoin, Sr. The restaurant has since been reopened at the same location and with the same name but under new ownership after a multi-decade hiatus.

Click to enlarge 'KISS' Touring Blues Goodbye
From: Caller.com

The summer concert scene so far has been peppered with reports of tours that are doing worse-than-expected business, with some major tours - such as the Eagles and Lilith Fair - having to scrap some shows and Limp Bizkit and Christina Aguilera canceling tours altogether.

KISS guitarist Tommy Thayer though, hasn't experienced the touring blues sensation.

"We haven't been affected like most all the other bands," Thayer said. "KISS is recession proof, I guess. We're selling lots of tickets and most other bands are canceling their tours. So we're lucky in that regard."

Thayer said a lot was going on in the lives of bandmates including Gene's show, "Gene Simmons Family Jewels" and several national promotions, including commercials for Dr Pepper.

From: Cincinnati.com

The classic metal band KISS will play Friday night at Riverbend, featuring founding members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley along with drummer Eric Singer and lead guitarist Tommy Thayer. We talked last week with Thayer, who replaced Ace Frehley eight years ago as the band's "Spaceman" character.

Question: You came to KISS by way of the band Black 'n Blue and after playing with a KISS tribute band, and you actually started with KISS as a kind of "Man Friday" go-fer, is that correct?

Answer: All of the above. I'd been with Black 'n Blue in the '80s, and we were lucky enough to open for KISS. The relationship evolved from there, through all the ups and downs.

Q: You're a better musician than Ace is - do you think beneath all the face paint you've carved out your own identity?

Click to enlarge Former KISS Drummer: Men Get Breast Cancer Too
From: The Star Phoenix

Peter Criss, founding member of rock band KISS, knows that many of his male fans are macho, so he is making the rounds to tell them even tough rocker guys like him can suffer from a disease usually associated with women -- breast cancer.

Criss, who was the New York rock band's drummer on and off from its founding in 1972 until 2004 and the voice on some of their most beloved classics, including the 1976 Top Ten hit "Beth" and "Hard Luck Woman," said too many men don't seek treatment and think breast discomfort will go away on its own.

But Criss, who discovered a lump in his left nipple in December 2007, said men need to get over their perception that breast cancer is a woman's disease.

From: Reuters

As the concert business struggles with top-name cancellations this summer, KISS hits the road in North America, betting that its spectacle of classic rock, pyrotechnics and fire-breathing will lure cash-strapped concert-goers looking for dependable entertainment.

The group is set to embark on its 32-date "Hottest Show on Earth" tour of the United States and Canada that starts on Friday in Cheyenne, Wyo., and ends in Fontana, Calif., in September to promote its "Sonic Boom" album.

The fact that KISS still plays 15,000-seat venues 37 years into its career comes from providing fans with what they want and touring with regularity, even when the band's popularity ebbed and flowed, its lead singer said.

Click to enlarge Paul Stanley Can Imagine Kiss Without Him
From: Undercover.com.au

Paul Stanley, charismatic singer and guitarist for KISS, has said that KISS can live on without him.

In a recent interview with Spin, the singer said "If I had my way I'd always be onstage. But I won't always be able to be onstage. At that point, somebody else should be there in my place. As big as my ego may be, I'm really not of the belief that I can't be replaced. I didn't invent the wheel. There's someone else out there who can do what I do, maybe a little differently."

The comments come as no surprise, since original drummer Peter Criss was replaced by Eric Singer and original lead guitarist Ace Frehley was replaced by Tommy Thayer many years ago, and fans didn't care, since the live show is more important than the actual people on the stage.

"I believe that KISS is bigger than it's individual members," Stanley continued. "I would be proud to know that I was right and have somebody else up there in my place when it's called for. That won't be anytime soon, but someday it could happen."

Click to enlarge KISS Tour Is For The Children says Gene Simmons
From: Billboard.com

KISS For Kids could well be the theme of the iconic rock group's just-started North American tour.

In a novel move for its amphitheater dates, the costumed quartet is giving free lawn tickets to up to four children with each paying adult.

"It's time to give back," bassist Gene Simmons explains to Billboard.com, adding that KISS -- which is also donating $1 per ticket to the Wounded Warrior foundation -- hopes to show the youths "that there's another world out there besides Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers. It's important for them to see how the big boys do it. There's no tapes. There's no background singers backstage. There's no click tracks. It's important for the kids to see that whatever you see on stage is real. We want to spread this. I'm insulted by any act that goes up there with dancers and tapes. It's insulting."

KF: After "Creatures," you had a bit of a KISS hiatus up until "Crazy Nights." But before we move on, one other question on Vinnie. It's been well documented that various circumstances led Vinnie Vincent and KISS to part ways by 1984. In hindsight, Paul and Gene have said Vinnie was brought in by default and that he never really fit the band. What's your take?

AM: That was the case. He was chosen by default. And I will just say this, it had nothing to do with his playing. I was not at the tryouts, but as I remember Vinnie was the very first guy they tried and they knew he played great, and they loved the way he played. But they had some concerns about how he would fit in in other respects, and those concerns in the end turned out to be well-founded.

KF: Personality issues?

AM: Various other issues, business stuff as well. There was no question about Vinnie's playing ability. But it's not playing that ultimately determines what happens in a band and who is in and who is out, it's always personality issues and business issues. Look, if business can break up the Beatles, it can break up anybody.

KF: You mentioned Bruce earlier. Aside from his playing ability, one of the reasons why Bruce had a successful tenure in the band was that he fit in so well, personality-wise.

KISS fans will "Rock and Roll All Nite" in Cheyenne.

The legendary band is kicking off their "Hottest Show on Earth" tour at Cheyenne Frontier Days on July 23.

"We're really looking forward to that (date) because we know some of our best concerts and crowds are in great places like in the middle of America like Cheyenne," said Tommy Thayer, the lead guitarist and vocalist for KISS. "It's where people know how to rock and roll. We know it will be over the top and it will be a great place to start."

Thayer confirmed that KISS has a number of new stage pyrotechnics and special effects in store for this tour.

"Yeah, KISS is always expanding and growing and pushing the limits, so in this case we're bringing the show that we just did in Europe, which is our biggest and over-the-top into amphitheaters of North America now," he said.

The group returned recently from Europe, where they performed 35 shows in 9 weeks.

Click to enlarge Eric Singer Interview
From: RockMusicStar.com

Hello everyone, this is John Jeffrey with Rock Music Star.com and today we have KISS drummer Eric Singer.

RockMusicStar: Eric, how are you doing?

Eric Singer: I'm good John. How ya doin'?

RMS: Good...good. First of all, I wanna thank you for taking the time to speak with us, and I wanted to start out by (also) congratulating you on the completion of KISS' highly successful European tour. I followed the tour personally by listening to the Sim-fy - the 'Instant Live' (type) - recordings, and I have to say, musically, you guys were really tight.....right on the money. Were there any shows that stood out for you?

ES: Well, I would say that there were some that stood out because of the circumstances. For example, we played Stockholm. We played the Olympic stadium, which is an outdoor stadium, and we played there 2 years ago (as well). It was sold out to begin with, but it was actually oversold, we had 36,000 people. It was a great show. You know, like (with) many bands, sometimes you go to certain countries or certain cities and the band is just really big (or) bigger there - for example - in another city or country. And there's no rhyme or reason. Nobody can understand why KISS is so huge in Sweden but maybe not so big....say - for example - in maybe.....I dunno.....let's say Bulgaria or something, for an example. There's no rhyme nor reason for it. Many times the countries are right next door to each other, or other cities that are close. You could have a huge crowd in Dallas and then go to Houston the next night, and maybe not be as big. And it's the same state and not even that far apart.

For Adam Mitchell, the music business essentially boils down to one thing, and one thing only. "Everything is about the song," he stresses. "Everything is a multiplication of the power of the song."

A BMI award-winning songwriter, Mitchell has worked with an array of artists over his long-standing career including Art Garfunkel, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Nicolette Larson, and Linda Ronstadt, among others, and his compositions have been recorded more than 150 times across various genres of music. Of course, to KISS fans he is known for being a co-writer on songs that appear on albums such as "Killers," "Creatures Of The Night," "Crazy Nights," and "Hot In The Shade." As fate would have it, he is also essentially responsible for bringing Vinnie Vincent into the KISS camp. "I introduced him to Gene when KISS was looking for a new guitar player," says Mitchell.

Mitchell came onboard during a critical juncture in the band's history. In 1982 KISS was essentially on life support after the dismal commercial reception of "(Music From) The Elder." In an attempt to resuscitate their career, they answered with "Creatures Of The Night," an album which Mitchell co-wrote three songs on, including the stomping title track. While "Creatures" was not a platinum-selling commercial smash, it has become a fan-favorite over the years and was an important stepping stone for the second chapter in the band's career.

Mitchell would go on to cultivate friendships with the various KISS members and a songwriting partnership that at times extended into outside projects with Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, and even Eric Carr and Bruce Kulick. His work has drawn high praise from his KISS collaborators. "Adam Mitchell's ability to write in a diversity of styles is only possible because of his solid grasp of the fundamentals of great songwriting," said Paul Stanley. "Adam Mitchell is a total professional. Some of my favorite KISS songs were co-written by Adam, and his contributions to many artists of fame are first class," said Bruce Kulick.

KISSFAQ caught up with Mitchell in an attempt to gain insight into this interesting period in KISStory. Along the way, he shared impressions about the songs and albums in which he participated in, stories about various band members, and engaged in discussions on general KISS topics, his own career and current projects, and the subject he is most passionate about: songwriting.

Click to enlarge I Go To KISS's Third Rehearsal
From: HuffingtonPost.com

During the last years of the '60s and start of the '70s, I went to the famous High School of Music & Art in Harlem, USA. It was way the heck uptown in the middle of CCNY's campus. Music & Art was a specialized school that catered to kids with aptitude in one or the other from all of New York City's five boroughs. I would travel 45 minutes on the rush-hour IRT subway from Brooklyn Heights each morning.

On my third day there, the no-kidding-around actual Black Panthers, looking fabulous in their black leather "car coat" jackets, berets and Ray-Bans, took over the entire CCNY campus and held it hostage for two weeks. We Music & Art pee wee middle-class Jewish, Italian, Polish, Irish, baby-Che Guevara wannabes were thrilled and would happily throw them our little white-bread power-fists every morning and afternoon as we came and went. For awhile, various Panthers power-fisted us back from the barricades they'd thrown together of desks, chairs, garbage cans, etc. behind the gates of the campus and we'd yell generic "Power To The People" slogans of encouragement. But, by the beginning of the second week, the Black Panthers, hungry, dirty, fed up, on the verge of being arrested, were in no mood for our play-acting. Their reality-sinking-in listlessness was instructive.

This event was almost immediately followed by a teachers' strike that was perceived by progressive parents to be an outright act of racism. My Dad, a long-time staunch union man, came to Music & Art and taught English for a week, he was so disgusted. "The only picket line I ever crossed, Binky. I want you to know that." Interesting times for a "gifted underachiever" sophomore.

Click to enlarge C.C. Banana Covers "Spit" For New Tribute Album
From: SplitScreenEntertainment.com

Rock & roll comic C.C. Banana, known for his outrageous interviews with rockers and other celebrities, becomes the latest addition to the upcoming tribute album "WHOLE LOTTA LOVE: An All-Star Salute To Fat Chicks." C.C. performs a faithful rendition of the underground KISS track "Spit," a song from their 1992 album "Revenge." Originally sung by Gene Simmons (with an assist from Paul Stanley), "Spit" is an unapologetic rock & roll rant about the pleasures of pleasuring a large-sized lady. It is also the second KISS song covered by C.C. Banana in his brief music career, the first being a parody of "Unholy," rewritten as a roast of Danger Danger frontman Ted Poley and appearing on the 2008 album "KISS MY ANKH: A Tribute To Vinnie Vincent." C.C. has amended the title of the track from "Spit" to "Split," in deference to his unique banana pedigree. A sample of the song is now available at the official "WHOLE LOTTA LOVE" MySpace page.

http://www.myspace.com/WholeLottaLoveTribute

As C.C. Banana explains, "For the follow-up to my contribution to the Vinnie Vincent tribute, for which I recorded a KISS song from the 'Revenge' album sung by Gene Simmons, I decided to record a KISS song from the 'Revenge' album sung by Gene Simmons (albeit with a slight change of title, to better reflect my yellow magnificence). What can I say? Split happens!"

I suppose it wouldn't be hard to find a drum roll somewhere in this digital expanse, but don't you just hate false drama?

The fine folks behind the Oregon Music Hall of Fame got together at Jimmy Mak's last night to announce this year's class. Here's what they said:

The Oregon Music Hall of Fame

Artists

Black 'N Blue: In the late 70's, a glam metal band appeared in Portland called Movie Star. The band included guitarist Tommy Thayer, vocalist Jamie St. James, drummer Pete Holmes, bassist Patrick Young and guitarist Jeff Warner. That band became Black 'N Blue, releasing their 1984 debut album on Geffen with the hit single "Hold On To 18". The band recorded three more albums for Geffen, with two produced by Gene Simmons of KISS. The band broke up in 1989, reuniting in 1997 and again in 2007. The band is currently reunited without Tommy, who replaced Ace Frehley in KISS in 2002.

From: The Metal Den

TMD unearths the holy grail for KISS fans. "Smoke" is a NEVER BEFORE RELEASED OR CIRCULATED demo by the legendary rock act circa the 1970's, believed to be cut in and around the same time as Rock and Roll Over - which itself was released in November 11, 1976, and recorded in September '76. The listener is in for a real treat. The song is the Stones "Jumpin Jack Flash" meets "Mr.Speed." It's unmistakably KISS, but upon first listen, you can easily understand why they could never release this track without being sued by the Stones, for it has completely lifted the riff and vocal line of 'JJF.' What makes it even more unique, however, is that Stanley and Simmons also sing it in total Stones fashion. It truly is a special moment in rock history and has to be heard to be believed.

Click to enlarge Q&A With Peter Criss
From: KISSfaq.com

For many KISS fans there is only one "Catman." The original, rather than a carbon kitty (relax people, that's just a term the webmaster finds humorous), the designer of that make-up and the stick-wielder behind KISS' classic era material; the same material that still provides the core of KISS' live set nearly 38 years following the band's formation. When Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley decided that their band, Wicked Lester, wasn't doing what they'd hoped in 1972 they started looking for other musicians who would be willing to take on the world. The first of these was Peter Criss...

The KISSFAQ would like to thank Peter for taking the time read this Q&A, let alone answer it! We'd also like to thank Gigi Criss for all of her assistance!

KISSFAQ: Peter, you're a cancer survivor. Congratulations! Could you tell us how you discovered that you had cancer?

Peter Criss: It's a long, long, story. I did a lot of press about it.

KISSFAQ: What was your reaction to finding out that it was breast cancer?

Had a great time on the July 4th holiday. Grand Funk had a show on the 3rd in Iowa, and my good friends from Night Ranger were also on the bill. They sounded great and we took some photos. I have to say the corn field blowing off to the left of the stage was quite a site for a New Yorker (transplanted in LA for all these years!).

Upon my return from the gig, it was my Mom's birthday. God bless her, she is 86. The family went to a great Italian place for dinner. Happy to have her in my life, of course.

Hope you all enjoyed your holiday weekend and enjoyed your local fireworks display. I sure did! [Note: Video may take a moment to fully load]

Keep an eye on the Grand Funk tour dates. We are all over this summer!

All the best,

Legendary manager Bill Aucoin sadly passed away at age 66 in June 28th after losing his long battle against prostate cancer. Bill was the man known for masterminding and managing the career of the group KISS but later on he also managed such bands as: Starz, Billy Squier and Billy Idol amongst many other names. I interviewed Bill back in 2006 in Helsinki when was here working with Finnish monster band Lordi. For reason or another this interview was never published in here in Metal-Rules.com so I decided to do it now as my tribute to Bill.

REST IN PEACE BILL !

THE CURRENT SITUATION

Over the last few years you have been doing a lot of KISS conventions and you still seem to have really strong connections to the band and the fans. But since you split up with KISS, do you ever have any negative feelings about being part of KISS and connected to them?

Bill: No, no. KISS was too much a pride of my life plus the fact that I love the guys. I love all of them even though there are only two in the band at the moment. And I really feel very strongly about them. Gene and Paul and I have actually been doing a lot of talking in the last couple of years. There is going to be something in their new box set which will one bonus track that will be the one of the original shows that I did with them before they went on their first concert tour.

You are talking about the Coventry shows in 1973?

Bill: Yeah. Unfortunately it is not going to be the whole show. There is a whole show that I videotaped back then. It is only going to be one song but it will be interesting to see them back in December 1973. But we still talk. I see Paul quite often and Paul is going on his first solo tour since he did the solo album back in the 70's. His new album is great, it is going to come out in October. So everything is fine. It is actually exciting to see them out on the road again. I'm glad to see them back in make-up now.

When KISS started to think about a possible re-union back at 1996, did they ask you to be part of it?

Hardcore punk icon HENRY ROLLINS has defended his decision not to attack KISS star GENE SIMMONS for bragging about his wealth on his U.S. talk show - insisting he was happy for the heavy rocker to "hang himself."

The former Black Flag and Rollins Band frontman admits he received a deluge of mail from angry fans for letting Simmons ramble on about his "hideous" wealth and sex life during an awkward interview on Rollins' former TV show The Henry Rollins Show.

The punk legend tells Spinner.com, "(Fans asked), 'Why didn't you give him shit?' (But) I'm not going to argue with a man in his 50s who's set in his ways. He was just doing his shtick.

KISS burst on the music scene in the early 1970s with flames, smoke, sirens and explosions. Band members in black leather, high heels and Kabuki-influenced makeup spit fake blood and belched fire to entertain wailing pubescent audiences.
