Mike's review:
From Mike Wren

Well, here's my review of the new, as yet unreleased KISS lp, HEAD or CARNIVAL OF SOULS. This album is AMAZING!! KISS have truly outdone themselves this time, this LP makes the new METALLICA cd sound like UNMASKED!! As Gene
put it," We're gonna show the big boys how it's done". Well put Mr. Simmons!

Here's a track by track review....
HATE (is what I am)...Gene takes UNHOLY to new, more evil level. When you hear this you'll do a double take, is this KISS?? Did Gene join PANTERA?? Nope, KISS just found a bigger, more dangerous pair of balls. A fast paced, HEAVY tune that sets the pace for the whole tape.
RAIN... One word describes this song, Powerful! Paul's voice has never been this strong, his talent is evident all over this album, especially on this tune. A heavy, grooving tune, with an awesome bridge. One of Paul's best!
TELL ME...Paul gets pissed!!!!! Again, a killer tune with an even better bridge!! Sounds like an Alice in Chains influence here, musically anyway. Also a very HEAVY tune, a very non-KISS type song. No songs about girls here!
CHILDHOOD'S END... A somewhat serious song from Gene, possibly based on the suicide of Kurt Cobain, "I heard you died last night.....when you blew your mind." This song starts with an awesome riff and during the chorus they even
have a group of children singing. If you listen close at the end, you can catch Gene singing some familiar lines over the chorus, " Youv'e got something about you. Youv'e got something I need." Another winner tune!!
I WILL BE THERE...This is a touching ballad from Paul. Done completely acoustic, Paul's voice is the main part of this song. He appears to be singing directly from the heart. It's not a song about some girl, but seems to be Paul connecting with his son. It's a moving song and reminds me a little of the "Rain Song" and other Zeppelin ballads, but so much more
powerful.
THE JUNGLE.. The BEST tune on this tape. The riff is UNREAL!!! Paul just keeps coming up with killer stuff. The drums sound a little like Peter circa. 1977, LOVE GUN LP. Bruce cuts loose at the end and gets to finally show on an
album how good the guy really is, this album is VERY Bruce influenced and thats one of the reasons it's so good.
SEDUCTION OF THE INNOCENT..A little strange to hear this type of tune from Gene, it has a Beatles-ish verse that gets heavy as the chorus kicks in. The lyrics kind of remind you of Thou Shalt Not, from Revenge.
IT NEVER ENDS...Another HEAVY Paul tune, Have Paul and Gene switched roles??? Has a really cool groove and Bruce again is awesome!
IN MY HEAD...Wait, I was wrong, Gene and Paul haven't switched. Gene is EVIL here. Possibly the heaviest, most Pantera-ish tune on the tape.
YOU CONFESS... Another Beatles like intro here, this is the best Gene tune on the tape. Great singing from Gene. The intro kinda reminds me of Destroyer a little, AWESOME TUNE!!!
IN THE MIRROR...A Paul tune that is a little like the KISS we are used to. Fast paced, with a breakdown that stole half from "Breakout" by Ace and the other half from "Love Her All I Can".
Well, that's it. It is THE BEST THING KISS HAS EVER DONE!!! Musically, lyrically, in EVERY WAY!!!! Bruce really kicks major ass on this one and for the first time, Gene's bass is up high in the mix and it adds an edge to everything. If you have the tape now, go out and get the CD if and when it's released, cuz these tapes just don't do it justice!
