KISS Skit On David Letterman
From: Jon
I was just watching The Late Show with David Letterman, and he had a skit where he was in the audience at the Grammys, and he had Gene Simmons makeup on and a sign that said "I love KISS!" Then the camera showed him signing CBS contracts with KISS makeup. After that, this guy that was posing as Dave with the KISS makeup, and he came out on stage, and the CBS Orchestra played "I was Made For Loving You."

KISS Video Chart News
From: Chris
KISS's latest home videos continue to do very well on the latest Billboard Charts. The Second Coming continues to hold at #6 on the Music Video Top 40. It has also moved up from #38 to #30 on the chart for overall video sales. Psycho Circus moves up from #11 to #10 on the Music Video Top 40. I believe these strong showings and upward chart movement can be attributed to the recent Super Bowl and Playboy publicity. I'm not sure if this publicity did anything to help sales of PC, the cd.

KISS Album Focus: "Destroyer" & "The Originals"
From: KISS Asylum & KISS Faq II
Felt a bit short-changed after reading the somewhat quick focus about Alive? Well, yes it was *short*, and to be honest I had difficulty finding much to say about it apart from 'They recorded it, released it, it went big, they went big' ;) But, seriously, there wasn't anything *new* to really add to the album's history, at least nothing concrete. So in anticipation of it being short, plus the delays since the last episode, I've managed to get the Destroyer Focus done ahead of schedule (ask Chris about my scheduling, LOL! Actually better not!). The Originals, which is mostly pictures, with most of the info being covered in the Destroyer issue is also done. Nothing too special in that one, perhaps, unless you got suckered by buying a fake Originals CD or have never seen the inserts! As for the future... "Pre-KISStory" progresses, it's big and I am not rushing this one as I want it to be as perfect as possible. I hope to get Rock And Roll Over and Love Gun done in the next couple of weeks so that I can concentrate on Alive II which will blow you away! Thanks, Julian Gill

Psycho Circus + Live 6 Song EP News
From: Dion Kesling
The new KISS Cd here in Europe has arrived. Actually it is a 2 CD set, of course there is the NEW 6 track live CD, but the package also contains a full version of the Psycho Circus CD with interactivity. So you get 2 cd's in one package. The live songs is awesome, of course there has been some editing done like in the Psycho Circus chorus (the backup lyrics have been clearly edited), but it is still all live stuff. All songs come from these 2 concerts: December 12 1998 at ISU Hulman Center, Terre Haute and December 13 1998 at Market Square Arena, Indianapolis, Indiana. The 6 songs are:

  • 1. Psycho Circus 5:08
  • 2. Let Me Go, Rock 'n' Roll 5:30
  • 3. Into The Void 9:06 (With small Ace solo)
  • 4. Within 7:54 (With Peters drum solo)
  • 5. 100,000 Years 5:12
  • 6. Black Diamond 6:11
The packaging isn't that different from the normal Psycho cd. The second cd looks the same as the normal blue clown one but has a yellowish clown on it. The back is also the same with the inclusion of the new tracks and info. The inside of the back cover has the KISS logo on it with the word 'LIVE' under it. Also it says: '2 CD LIMITED EDITION' and has all the song and recording info. The price of the Cd's is about Hfl.60,- guilders here in Holland and that is about $ 30 US Dollars. All in all a nice addition to the KISS collection although I would have liked to see a whole Psycho concert on CD.

    KAOL CDs In Japan
    From: Kathy Labonte
The music of the KISS Army On Line has reached Japan! The KAOL (KISS Tribute) CDs are being distributed overseas and the Japanese fans love it! Tokyo's largest record store, Shinjuku Records, has been carrying "KAOL 2 - Creatures of The Net" and just ordered the brand new remaster "KAOL - Music From the Folder '99". Posters for Creatures are on display there and the store has ran an ad of the KAOL 2 album cover in Japan's largest rock magazine called BURRN. We expect both of the KAOL CDs to do very well there and as a result, anticpate a large Japanese audience for the final KAOL 3 at the end of the year. Here in the States, Detroit's large chain of record stores called Harmony House just took a considerable volume of "Music From The Folder '99" discs on consignment - so if you are in the Detroit area and haven't purchased KAOL yet, you can pick it up there. They are also still stocked with some "Creatures Of The Net" discs as well. We will have further news concerning distribution in Canada and Los Angeles soon. In the meantime, the best way to get your KAOL discs is thru mail order so please visit the website for ordering info and for news updates concerning all 3 KAOL albums. Stay tuned for the first preview of the final KAOL 3 and for news about MusiCare Online's next donation to The Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.

But when you present Peter with a challenge, he'll get in there and do it. He's a very capable drummer with good ideas, and he's a good player for Kiss."

KISS in the "NFL" Hall of Fame!?
    From: Jim McClanahan
During the NFL expansion draft on ESPN2, the coverage shifted to the NFL Hall of Fame. At the Hall of Fame, they showed Ace Frehley's guitar which is on display there in a glass case. It was the autographed guitar that Ace played before the Super Bowl. It seemed to have both the Broncos and Falcons logos on it. Kiss never had to play a down, but they've still made it in to the NFL Hall of Fame. The Rock -n- Roll Hall of Fame shall be next.

    KISS Sighting
    From: Andy Samford
Last night on the Conan O'Brien show, during the segment where they have the heads of famous people on a screen behind Conan with someone backstage doing the talking/impressions they had Bill Clinton on celebrating his acquittal and he called out Kenneth Starr to pay up on the bet he lost and out came a Kenneth Starr head in Gene Simmons makeup, after which Clinton said "do the tongue thing" Starr: "I don't want to do the tongue thing" Clinton: "you have to do the tongue thing it was part of the bet" at which point the Kenneth Starr head started sticking his tongue out like Gene. Really funny, I wish I had the VCR rollin.

    "Detroit Rock City" Movie Postponed
From: Metal Edge via Javier Chavez
The release of Detroit Rock City has been postponed till mid-August, which was, ironically, the month the KISS movie was originally intended to come out, before it was fast-tracked into production to get it out in April. But as it turned out, there simply wasn't enough time to get the film marketed properly and its soundtrack put together in time. The extra time "will give us more time to promote it," says DRC associate producer TIM SULLIVAN. "We had a strong test screening Monday night and New Line is very pleased with the film," he says, noting that the four extra months will benefit the soundtrack and enable them to get a trailer into theaters during the busy May-July movie season.

A Loving Look At "Detroit Rock City" Test Screening
    From: aint-it-cool-news.com via Sam Ling
Ya know folks, every now and again there's a film that just makes me wanna smile. You see, DETROIT ROCK CITY is that movie right now. When I was just a wee lad, I dressed up as the 'Thing That Survived Three Mile Island', which consisted of a glow in the dark reptilian mask and a 'no nukes' t-shirt and won the Eeyore's Birthday Costume Contest here in Austin. The Prize? All four of them LPs (an ancient circular disc made of asphalt like substance with grooves which, when scratched with a needle attached to an amplifier gave off noise sounding like HIFI MUSIC) of the KISS Solo Albums... the ones where each album had a different member of the band's badass faces on it! Ever since I've heard of this movie, I've been awaiting it. And, I've been hoping that it would be a part of SXSW Music and Film fest here in Austin. Why? Well, so I could see it earlier than it's targeted release date, which now pushes it into the summer from it's earlier April release date.... sigh.... So who knows... perhaps...I had the opportunity to see a MarketCast test screening of Detroit Rock City on Monday, and am finally getting around to sharing my thoughts with you. Please feel free to share this with your readers. First off, let me just start with the obligatory bashing of market research companies.... Prior to this, I'd only attended two other test screening, both by the famed NRG. Hah, and I thought they were bad! This MarketCast group was incredibly disorganized and unprepared for the number of people that showed up. But my real beef was the demographics represented.... The "invitation" called for ages 18-34 only, yet a good 1/3 of the audience were under 18. I'd guess VERY few over 25. Even the "select" group of viewers who were paid for a more in depth opinion fell in the 16-25 area. Considering this is a movie about K.I.S.S. and K.I.S.S. fans in 1972, I would have though an older age group much more representative. Although the humour of the movie seemed targetted towards the younger end of the spectrum. Not sure if that was intentional or wise.

Gene's original Axe bought by Jason Newsted of Metallica?
    From: KISS Kollector
A Metallica web site Inter Sandman reports the following: "Jason has apparently made a rather expensive purchase, adding THE ORIGINAL GENE SIMMONS AXE BASS to his collection. The guitar was priced at $19,800 and it included a presentation 'coffin' case. The guitar was put on sale by Guitar Den, who owns the exclusive rights to it." On the Guitar Den web site some more information can be found: "What we have here is the original, the prototype, the first one, the *real* axe bass used by Gene Simmons of KISS. It was used in concert as well as for promotional photography. This is the real deal owned by the luthier who made the first three of Simmons axe basses. The Guitar Den has the exclusive rights to this one, which was the first, used by Simmons until retired and the second one was created to take its place. The second one is the bass that appeared in the Guitar Player Magazine." The story continues: "This bass is also commonly referred to by KISS fans as the Gothic Bass or the Viewmaster Bass because of the circular viewmaster photos circulated and now collected. It was designed by Gene Simmons and built by Steve Carr. It was built as a prototype and eventually used in the spring of 1979 and immediately put into service for promotional photography. There are photos and documents assuring authenticity. The backyard photo is dated 1979 on the back by Kodak."

KISS Night At The Ballpark II - West Coast Style
    From: Pat Filippone GM
The second Kiss Tribute Night is schedule for Friday, July 23, 1999, in Rancho Cucamonga, California. Last September I accepted a job as the General Manager of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes baseball team and have decided to bring the Kiss tribute night to the west coast. For those of you unfamiliar with Rancho - it is located 40 miles east of Los Angeles. The Ontario International Airport is 5 minutes from the ballpark. I would like to build upon the success we had with our last event. I received so many wonderful ideas from the Asylum community last year that I would love to hear from you again to help grow this event. If you recall last year in the Washington, DC area we had fans come from as far as London and all over the US! Hopefully having the tribute night on the West Coast can be just as successful. As with last year's event we will do the following:
  • Our players will wear special uniforms.
  • Kiss music will be the only music played during the game.
  • A spectacular fireworks show will be held after the game.
  • We will have face painting booths.
  • Kiss trivia contests will be held.
  • I would also like to have Kiss vendors and a tribute band as well.
  • Plus many other items!
I would love to get input and ideas from the KISS Asylum community on the event. You can e-mail me at patquakes@aol.com.

Unfortunately Eric didn't have enough time to really shop for a contract with a TV station to have his Rockheads actually appear on TV. Ever since Eric passed away in 1991, his family has tried very hard to get his music released to the fans. The CD will be released as a limited collectors edition of 5,000 copies. Eric sings all lead vocals and also plays drums and guitar. Bruce Kulick can be heard as the lead guitarist. Says Eric's sister Loretta: "These are complete never before released remastered songs, from the original 12-tracks, written by Eric for his Rockheads animation between 1986 and 1989. They are awesome. You will be amazed how much more talented Eric was. The ballad called Tiera will bring tears to your eyes, it is beautiful. The other songs are great too: Too Cool For School, Nasty Boys, Can You Feel It ...great!"

    Gene Simmons The Producer
    From: Metal Edge
Looks like the next movie GENE SIMMONS will produce will be called Groupies --a subject about which you might say he has intimate knowledge-- for New Line Cinema, the studio releasing Detroit Rock City.

    KISS on EXTRA
    From: Michael Clark
Last night, KISS made a small appearance on Extra, the sister show to Inside Edition. The feature was on the upcoming issue of Playboy, which, of course, features KISS. It showed Gene and the three lovely ladies posing for the cover, and then went to a segment of all four guys standing around talking to the camera. Paul said, "we were not naked, and we were not having fun," and Ace broke in, saying, "and if you believe that we'll sell you the Brooklyn Bridge!"

    KISS Sighting
    From: Don Silvernail
While watching Robbie Knievel's jump tonight on Fox. Robbie was leaving his trailer to face the crowd before the jump, they used the first verse and chorus from the KISS classic "Detroit Rock City", for his entrance. The jump was a record breaking 130 foot leap from one buiding to another. Robbie was successful. I thought it was really cool that an American icon like Robbie would use KISS music in what was probably his most dangerous jump ever. Robbie of course is the son of Evel Knievel.

Just thought I'd let you know the current state of the Peter Criss Cat Club site. A week ago my ISP went bankrupt leaving me stranded without an internet provider or a place to house my webpages. Which is why you may have had some problems either looking at the site or emailing me. You'll be happy to know that I am currently negotiating with a new ISP and have uploaded the site to the following address: http://roswell.fortunecity.com/angelic/96/crisclub.htm

    KISSonline's Million Fan March
    From: KISSonline.net
New Line Cinema's major motion picture Detroit Rock City opens on April 16, 1999, and when that opening weekend is over Detroit Rock City HAS to be the number one film. What can the KISS ARMY do to make this happen? I think the film's director Adam Rifkin said it... "It is going to be absolutely essential that the KISS ARMY come out in mass to support this film. Because, especially week one, we need an all out support at the box office. So that when those first weekends grosses come in we are the number one movie. So we can go to the public at large, you see KISS rocks! So it's very important, especially week one, the first weekend, opening weekend that everybody goes to see it. Just really shows the world that the KISS ARMY is out there and they are a power to be reckoned with!" Click here to find out how you can participate.

KISS on Latenight / KISS Playboy Covers
    From: Steve Ponchaud
KISS did double time on latenight, as you reported, they were on Letterman with the Superbowl coverage from Tony Randall (which was hilarious), but they were also mentioned on Conan O'Brien as Fred Savage was a guest and they talked about his appearance at Gene $immon$ birthday. Conan interrupted alot (as he always does) so they strayed from the point, and the story kinda got lost, but it was cool anyway.
By the way, I have around 200 perfect condition KISS Playboy covers, pristine covers unused from the printer...and about 50 of the two page posters with Paul and the girls on one side and the whole group with the ladies on the other...all uncut and no staple holes. $5 each. Please email me if anyone's interested.

KISS Girls Rock 'n' Roll in Playboy
    From: TV Guide via spaceace77@excite.com
What group will do more for Kiss makeup than the theatrical rockers themselves ever could? Why, a bevy of their female fans appearing in the pages of Playboy, of course! A feature in the magazine's March "Sex & Music" issue shows off the band's groupies ‹ with a helping of Playmate ringers thrown in ‹ in Kiss facial paint, and little else. The whole thing started when the band put out the word that its fairer fans could vie for a spot in Kisstory, a book devoted to the group. Women responded by sending in shots of themselves in various states of undress. Happy-tongued band member Gene Simmons then decided to offer the pictures to the men's magazine. Of course, Simmons already had a bit of a relationship with Playboy: He lives with actress and former Playmate Shannon Tweed, with whom he has two kids. Those seeking a preview of the Kiss-themed issue need only journey to New York's Times Square, where Playboy recently unveiled a billboard featuring a giant-sized version of its March cover. It's all part of the publication's celebration of the lunar Year of the Rabbit. Hey, it only comes around once every 12 years, so they might as well pull out all the stops. ‹ Michael Peck

KISS on "Late Show with David Letterman"
    From: Aaron Knight
Tony Randal did a remote for the Late Show at the Super Bowl. At one point he is backstage with KISS. Gene tells Tony that he is a powerful man, but Tony says that next to Gene he's just a midget. Gene says "Well, that's true.", and wiggles his tongue. As Paul starts to say something to Tony, Tony tells Gene to "do that again." Gene does and Tony replies, "That is disgusting!" Behind them all was a banner with the Detroit Rock City movie logo.

    KISS Bowls 'em Over
From: Jam Music via Steve Araki
By David Veitch -- Calgary Sun
An American classic. No, no, no -- I'm not talking about yesterday's Super Bowl game, which turned out to be another highly hyped yawner. I'm talking about Kiss, the reunited '70s supergroup responsible for more fireworks (literally) during its short pregame performance than the Denver-Atlanta clash ignited over four quarters. Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss are masters at whipping audiences into a frenzy -- and they did exactly that with a rendition of their classic, fist-pumping party anthem Rock and Roll All Nite. Paul (with Kiss, it's first name, please) worked the crowd, Gene flicked his tongue, cheerleaders in Kiss makeup gyrated around the stage, and Ace shot sparks from the neck of his guitar. The song's finale ended with a fireworks display that would put the Fourth of July to shame. How theatrical! How over-the-top! How garish! How Kiss!

    Howard Stern On KISS
    From: Derek
I was listening to Stern this morning and he was going on and on about how great he thought KISS was. So I thought it was just kinda cool to hear Howard exclaim, "I thought KISS was GREAT!" He then talked about how cool hearing "Rock and Roll All Nite" was, and seeing the make-up, costumes, pyro, etc. His only Stern-like comment was that Paul should put on a shirt because he's too hairy. lol. Otherwise, very cool.
