Second Coming on VH-1 / UNION News
From: Metal Edge Online via Mike Hogan
If you haven't seen the home video of KISS' Second Coming you'll be able to catch it on TV several times--VH1 will run an edited version premiering on June 3 at 8 and 10 PM, June 5 at 1 AM, June 6 at 6 PM, June 7 at 2 AM, and June 12 at 11 AM and 10 PM. Gene Simmons was on hand to see two of his former bandmates in action on Saturday night, when Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer shared a bill but not the stage at Pleasures, a strip club that books live rock music on weekends. Kulick's UNION opened for Gilby Clarke, in whose band Singer plays when he's in town (it's down to a trio now with Stefan Adika on bass; Tracii Guns is out on the Poison tour with L.A. GUNS). Union's excellent set included favorites like "Old Man Wise," "Around Again," "Pain Behind Your Eyes," "Heavy D," "Love (I Don't Need it Anymore)," and "Tangerine" (with some Led Zeppelin touches from "Kashmir" and "The Immigrant Song") and covers of KISS' "Jungle," The Scream's "Man in the Moon," Cheap Trick's "Surrender," and the Beatles' "Oh Darlin." UNION has been working on and demoing new songs and will start recording on June 13 with producer Bob Marlette, but will be performing several times during the month. The first is a show at Pink E's in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 5, followed by The Shack in Anaheim, California on June 12 and Scruffy O'Shea's in Marina Del Rey, California on June 18. Copies of new live album Live in the Galaxy will be available at the shows, and soon via the UnionAsylum.com Web site. "Those will be signed copies," says Kulick, who was the special guest at a KISS Expo in Buenos Aires, Argentina on May 25. "It was amazing. They treated me like God," says the guitarist, who jammed with a local band for 1000 fans. Singer's drum solo was one highlight of Clarke's rocking set, which featured favorites like "Cure Me or Kill Me," Knockin' on Heaven's Door," and "Tijuana Jail Doors."
Charmed by Phantom's KISS
From: Toronto Sun via Francesco Gucciardo and Steve Araki

Paul Stanley knows a little something about giving the fans what they want
Like Gene Simmons, his loud-mouth cohort in veteran glam-rock band KISS, the chatty but more refined Paul Stanley has never met a journalist he didn't like. So it would appear when Stanley sat down recently to discuss his surprising career move
into theatre as the star of the long-running Toronto production of The Phantom Of The Opera. It opens with him at the Pantages Theatre on Wednesday night after previews this past week. Stanley screams rock star on this particular day, in a black leather outfit with his shirt undone to just above his belly button. He's also wearing silver hoop earrings. As I take notes, he rattles off his breakfast menu. "He orders Earl Grey tea, frosted flakes, skim milk, and an English muffin," says Stanley with a smile as I sit opposite him in a restaurant at a downtown hotel that's been his home
for the last month during Phantom rehearsals. "You've done this before," I joke.
Ah yes, the promotional machinery that has been KISS for the last 27 year doesn't
suddenly disappear just because Stanley has traded in his platform boots, black spandex and Kabuki makeup for an opera mask and a black-tie ensemble. If anything, Stanley is selling himself even harder because he knows there are skeptics out there -- Entertainment Weekly referred to his casting as "talk about a Phantom Menace" -- who doubt his ability to perform without pyrotechnics. "I've always liked the challenge of breaking the rules and breaking tradition, and also winning at the game," says Stanley, 47. "I don't make a habit of doing things where I look foolish. I may have people scratching their heads when I do something but, by the end, they're usually well rewarded." And is there really that much of a difference between singing the KISS anthem Lick It Up and The Phantom's signature song, Music Of The Night? "It's related obviously," admits Stanley. "And yet it takes re-orientation. I've always thought of myself as a singer who sings rock as opposed to a rock singer. So in doing Phantom it gives me a chance to explore another facet." Stanley, who was on the road with the KISS Psycho Circus tour when he got the call in January to audition in New York, first saw Phantom in London back in 1988. He has seen it several times since, including twice in Toronto with his predecessor, Quebec singer Rene Simard. Stanley, who takes over the role until Aug. 1, will be followed by actor Jeff Hyslop as Phantom wraps up its 10-year run in September. Unlike Simard and Hyslop, Stanley has a healthy built-in audience. His visit to the Mike Bullard's Open Mike show caused KISS fans to start lining up outside the Masonic Temple at 10 a.m., while about 600 people showed up at Tower Records last weekend for an in-store appearance. Even Livent's ads for Stanley's Phantom run exclaim: "You can't escape his KISS!"

KISS On VH-1's RockShow
From: Garry Radke
The 5-28 edition VH1's Rock Show featured a segmant on KISS! They showed some footage of them at the Intrepid Press Confeence showing off some of the old stuff. What was really funny was when Paul showed off the original picture of KISS
(sans-makeup, this picture is a.k.a Wicked Lester, circa '73) pointed to Ace and said, What you may not know is that Lilly Tomlin was our original guitarist, and everyone burst into laughs. Then they showed some AWESOME footage from the Psycho Circus tour, and finally they played the Let's Put The X In Sex video from '88. Really cool stuff!!
"Shout It Out Loud" Video Reviewed On Rock of Ages
From: Kenny
KISS' video for "Shout it Out Loud" was reviewed on VH1's show "Rock of Ages". This show has people, from different age groups, review music videos. The KISS
video was reviewed by 2 groups of wrestlers (children and adults). During the review, Jimmy "Mouth of the South" Hart compared KISS' live show to a WCW
wrestling match. He said that they "both have thousands & thousands of screaming fans having a great time and loud music". One of the child wrestlers said "they're kind of psycho-looking, they look like they're in a freakshow". This was a very funny clip.
Paul on MuchMusic
From: David Bower
MuchMusic aired a piece on "The Phantom Of The Opera" during their "Fax" show this weekend, playing some live footage from Pantages with Paul on stage (very cool!) and then switching to footage of the Tower Records in-store held the 22nd of May. Paul was showing the camera "KISS This" wine as he was signing the bottle. He was on camera to say this...."The most awesome thing about doing Phantom is it gives me a chance to continue doing what I love doing, which is performing for people...so everybody who's out there who's seen Phantom, you should come back because I'm gonna do something that I think you haven't seen before that brings something special to it. Everybody who's never seen theatre, this is the time to come...theatre is not for the rich, it's not for the elite, it's not for the people in black tie, it's for you, come see Phantom of the Opera, I'll be there May 25th to August 1st. I promise you'll have a great time!"

KISS once again dominates the Metal Edge Readers Choice Awards walking away with six band awards topping their 5 collective awards they won in 1996. KISS won top awards for "Band of the Year","Album of the Year","Song of the Year (Psycho Circus)","Best Video Clip","Best Video Cassette (Second Coming)" and "Best Live Performance." Gene Simmons walked away with the "Best Bassist" award. Ace Frehley was runner up in "Best Guitarist" as was Peter Criss in "Best Drummer." Very Special Offer for Eric Carr fans: Bruce Kulick, Adam Mitchell, and the Caravello Family have donated some of the new ROCKHEADS CD to MusiCare Online to help raise money for KAOL projects and the Children's Hospital. We have a limited amount of SIGNED discs that will be for sale on June 1st. These are signed by both Bruce Kulick and Adam Mitchell and are sure to be collector's items in the future. The website will have full ordering info AND a review of the disc on June 1st. These will go fast so make sure you check back to place your order. If you would like to secure your copy now and get it on a reserved list, you can contact me directly at ILOVE70s@aol.com. ALSO: The deadline for the final KAOL 3 album has now been SET. Detroit Rock City Soundtrack News
From: MTV via Mike Hogan
Marilyn Manson, Everclear, the Donnas, and Drain STH will be among the artists revisiting the big rock of the '70s on the soundtrack to the upcoming film "Detroit Rock City." Set in 1978, the movie follows a group of teens desperately trying to get into a sold-out Kiss concert. In keeping with that period, Manson will cover AC/DC's "Highway To Hell," Drain STH will tackle the T-Rex classic "20th Century Boy," and the Donnas will take a stab at the Kiss nugget "Strutter." Everclear will also dig into the pre-1978 rock catalog for the soundtrack; the band is heading to frontman Art Alexakis' basement to record Thin Lizzy's "The Boys Are Back In Town." Of course, Kiss will be featured as well, with the band kicking in three old tracks and one new
song written for the band by Dianne Warren, the woman behind Aerosmith's Oscar-nominated "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing." "Detroit Rock City" opens on August 13, and the soundtrack should arrive at the end of July.

Gene Simmons In Nike TV Commercial
From: David Swayne
I was watching TV today, when a NIKE commercial about baseball started. It had some really big stars in it such as Spike Lee, Michael Jordon and Ted Williams, to name a few, all talking about baseball. Of course, the greatest star was saved for last, The Demon. There he appeared in full make-up holding on to a black baseball bat with metal spikes comming out of it. He growled and sneered at the camera and said "My Dad made me play baseball!" With that, he stuck out his infamous tongue. Too Cool!

Gene Simmons at E3 Convention Report
From: Carlos
I was in attendance at the e3 convention yesterday (Thursday 5.13) in Los Angeles, upon arrival I headed straight for the Gathering of Developers "Promise Lot". The sign posted in front said "Gene Simmons 12pm", so since it was 11:30am I decided to wait. I entered the trailer that was previewing "Psycho Circus:The Nightmare Child". 3 months had been put into this game (so far) and it already looks amazing! The guys from Third Law (the developers) were great and wanted to hear all suggestions (which I had alot of!), especially from KISS fans! I got to spend a good hour in the trailer talking to the guys from Third Law who were also pretty excited to meet Gene (it was their first time, for me I've met the DEMON on many occasions). Well noon came and went and still no Gene, at that time we were told that he would be there from 3pm to 5pm. At three I reentered the "lot", only to be told that now it would be four o'clock! My brother Dave (also a lifelong fan) went in and previewed the game at that time, and his report was the same as mine! He loved it as well! Finally at 4:30pm Gene walked in looking very tired and hardly talking to anyone. He told security that he didn't want to stand in front of the trailer and sign autographs (even though there were only maybe 20 people there), but if security collected a few pieces of memorabilia he would sign. To my surprise I was one of the only people who actually brought anything (one girl showed up after with a lunchbox)! I handed over my german Dynasty LP, my Creatures of the Night (glow-in-the-dark) LP, and my Playboy cover, to the security guy (Playboys were handed out to the few people there). After about 15 minutes the security guard, arose with our signed goods. Soon after that Gene walked out said a few words and left! Now I've met Gene on alot of ocassions and he has always been the nicest guy. But this time his actions, his look, his tardiness, and his failure to say more that two words to most people, (he did talk to my brother for a minute) led me to believe that he just was not feeling well (if that's true, get better soon Gene). So look forward to the game, it's gonna kick some serious ass! Sverre from Third Law told me it would be coming out around the first of the year!!!

KISS Concertology Book Help
From: Radagast5@aol.com
Hello again, KISS fans, For those of you familiar with the ever-ongoing KISS Concertology, skip ahead to the next paragraph. For those who don't know what this project is...The KISS Concertology project is an attempt to create an archive (which will be published as a book) of every concert KISS has ever performed from 1973 to the present. Included in the vast database of information are show dates, venue names, city/country, opening and headlining acts, attendance figures, promoters, setlists, etc. Currently, we have information on over 1,800 shows. Despite over four years of painstaking research, we are still missing some valuable information. So, once a year or so, we troll the vast network of KISS fans out on the internet in an attempt to fill in the missing information. As always, ANY assistance is always sincerely appreciated! (Of course, anyone who contributes information will be thanked in the book.) First, three general questions:
1. Did you ever attend a show where Gene's hair caught on fire? If so, do you remember where and when it happened?
2. Did you ever attend a KISS show where any of the other bands (either headliners or openers) scheduled to perform at the show were added or canceled at the last second?
3. Did you ever attend a KISS show where Sweet, April Wine or Focus was the opening act?

GameSpot's KISS Preview: "The Nightmare Child"
From: GameSpot.com via imbach@home.com
KISS is back with a vengeance. The original lineup (Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, Peter Criss, and Paul Stanley) is back on the world stage, touring in the United States and Europe and raising a new KISS army. Their licensing army is also on the march, spinning off KISS masks, KISS guitars, KISS wrestling, and even a KISS computer
game. Is it too much? It always is; that's why it's KISS! Now in development, the computer game KISS: Psycho Circus: The Nightmare Child is based on the KISS, Psycho Circus comic book series by Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn. Developer Third Law Interactive, a start-up group composed of Ion Storm refugees, is using a modified version of Monolith's Lithtech engine, which was used for Shogo and Blood 2. Third Law plans to rev the engine extensively and throw down a hail of nasties your way. "We're an unproven group, so we want an intense, action-filled experience," says Sverre Kvernmo, game designer for Third Law. You will have to contend with large groups of demon spawn, the creations of an unborn evil that is somehow altering reality. As the game progresses, you advance from mere mortal to a creature with godlike powers, based on McFarlane's characterizations of The Elder (alter egos of the members of KISS). Gameplay will vary as you control each of the four Elders, with different environments, powers, and challenges. You'll need to assemble the five parts of each KISS member's costume to give you the power to defeat the Nightmare Child, since each item holds special powers. The platform boots, for example, will increase your jump height; the breastplate gives you better protection; and so on. (We wonder what Gene Simmons' tongue will do.)

KISS Meets the Phantom of the Parking Lot
From: E3.net via Chris & Sandra
Everyone's favorite blood-spewing rocker/marketing genius will be in attendance at this year's E3. That's right, none other than Gene Simmons himself will be a guest of the Gathering of Developers gang, the publishers of Third Law's upcoming KISS Psycho Circus: The Nightmare Child. But don't look for The Demon on the show floor. The Gathering will be located in a parking lot across from the LA Convention Center, known as "The Promised Lot." Besides showing off games like Psycho Circus and Max Payne, The Promised Lot will feature live music and food, along with a happy hour from 5-7 PM. Celebrities and semi-celebrities in attendance at the Lot
include: B-movie actress Julie Strain (May 15th 1-3PM), who served as a character
model for the upcoming Heavy Metal F.A.K.K. 2. Playboy's Miss January 1999 Jamie Bergman (May 14th 1-5PM). We can't figure out what she's got to do with games, but hey...it must be a LA thing. Gene Simmons will be at The Promised Lot May 13, time TBD.
KISS Mention In Rolling Stone Magazine
From: David Swayne
This from the lastest issue of Rolling Stone, out of a column called "The Sheffield Report" Yes, it's true: The KISS Army's four-star general PAUL "STAR CHILD"
STANLEY is lending his magic pipes to a Toronto production of The Phantom of
the Opera. Who knows if Paul will match his work in Kiss Meet The Phantom of
the Park of if he'll quiz the crowd on whether they prefer tequila, vodka and orange juice, or cold gin, but as a special tribute, all the red ink in this issue's column is printed in Paul's blood.
Dale Sherman's Alice Cooper Book
From: Dale Sherman
KISS book author Dale Sherman has a new rock book coming out soon on Alice Cooper. Dale added, "Okay, it's not KISS, but I know a lot of KISS fans are also fans of the Coop (even if they don't want to admit it). Just wanted to let everyone see some info on my new book about Alice, which should be hitting the shelves of stores everywhere around the beginning of June. It's 320 pages, with 16 pages in color, covering Alice's career from the days of the Earwigs right up to the release of the boxset. The book is like a combination of BD1 and BD2 for KISS, with Alice's career examined in each chapter in biographical form, then a look at the many variations of albums, singles, books, comic books, videos and tour-dates from over the years. Also included is a look at the solo careers of the other members of the Alice Cooper Group, guest appearances and over fifty bootlegs. With Alice's boxset just hitting the streets and more to come, 1999 looks to be the Year of the Coop! Check out the book and find out what's been going on all these years!" From: Lou Bingham
In the new (very funny) movie "Idle Hands" there is a scene that centers around a high school Halloween dance. One kid's face is painted like Gene, and his girlfriend looks like Paul. They listen to Ace's "New York Groove" while they make out in the car.
