Still Wicked: Something Wicked This Way Comes
Still Wicked, composed of members Gordon G. G. Gebert (Keyboards/Vocals), Ron Leejack (Rhythm Guitar/Vocals), Danny Cheng (Bass) and Michael Sciotto (Drums/Percussion/Vocals), has put together a tight, impressive first EP in "Something Wicked This Way Comes." Released on Pitbull Records and available for purchase through the KISS N TELL Website, this 6 song EP is definately worth checking out. Not only does it feature a cover of KISS' "She", it also showcases a very rare bit of Ace Frehley guitar work on the "Rocker Room Theme."
SHE: As all good covers should, the guys of Still Wicked have added enough of their own spice and variation to this KISS classic to make it their own, including an altered/extended chorus. This track features Ron Leejack of the original Wicked Lester, as well as showcasing the brilliant bass playing of Danny Cheng. A very worthy addition to the too often bland world of KISS covers.
BODIES TALKING: Guest lead vocalist MaryAnn Scandiffio really lets loose on this good old fashioned song which, as the title says, encourages letting the bodies do the "talking." There's some very impressive leads featured here from guest axe man Nick Moroch.
CAJUN RAIN: I really love this track!! By far my favorite track on the EP, this instrumental reminds me of a song from a soundtrack such as "Crossroads" or "Dead Man Walking" with its emotional feel and bluesy/cajun tone. It's a track that manages to be both laid back and uplifting at the same time, and really conjures up some strong imagery if you indulge your imagination and let it carry you along. Excellent work on this one indeed.
D.O.A: Very, very cool track. Chuck Giunta does a masterful job with the alternately drowning/soaring vocals on this creepy tale told from the perpesctive of one laid out on the slab "D.O.A." The song's dark and sinister atmosphere is really owed in large part to Gebert's haunting keyboard work, which keeps you on the edge of your seat. There is also some great rhythm/scrub guitar work throught the track, particularly in the breakdown.
SAM: The light, acoustic guitar work that opens this track would lead you to believe you are in for an "unplugged" type number - wrong! The song quickly slams into another, completely kick ass gear leaving those opening acoustic strains in the dust. Michael Sciotto's drum work on this track is the clear standout, while the slowly building vocal soon makes it perfectly clear what "SAM" actually stands for. This is a very catchy track, so don't be surprised to find yourself humming the music or chanting the words after only a single listen.
"ROCKER ROOM" THEME (featuring Ace Frehley):This instrumental theme to a local New York show from years past called "Rocker Room" is notable to KISS fans for one big reason - Ace Frehley. Yes, as a favor to his friend Gordon Gebert Ace performed all the guitar work on this short track. The theme is a keyboard heavy rocker, with Ace's guitars swirling throughout the mix, capped off by a classic - albeit brief - Space Ace solo. This rarely heard piece of Ace's guitar work alone is worth the price of the disc for any serious KISS fan.
