Issue #16: "The Vintage / Unathorized" Review
Well once again the people at Creative Worx have got Kiss fans chattering this time it's about the new DVD called The Vintage. Following in the footsteps of its sister DVD's Unauthorized & Inside The Tale of the Fox, this DVD is also filled with a ton of never before seen footage. Here's a glimpse of what you the Kiss fan can expect. Thanks to quick eyes & E-Bay the producer of this DVD Jack Sawyers was able to obtain two unreleased pieces of super 8mm footage, though they are both silent, one piece from 1974 & one from 1977 so the rarity of it makes it worthwhile. The cool thing about the 74 footage is Ace still has the silver in his hair & Gene still gets down on one knee to breathe fire. If you watch carefully you can even tell what songs are being played by choreography or stage effects, same can be said for the 77 footage. It's not often a fan gets rare footage like this especially in the pristine quality it is in which is the main selling tool of this DVD.

Now on to the rest of the tape's contents:

We have various clips such as one from 1977 Ch 7 in California with is from the visit to the Don Steele radio show. Some other clips one here are an unknown news clip from the Creatures era with a Ron Jeremy look-a-like. This clip features a bunch of fans some are weird like the one kid who lights his boot on fire to simulate the fire breathing. Some costumes are cool looking but there is one guy in Gene's makeup whose costume looks like an ape. Peter leaving Kiss in 1979 with all sorts of footage & a Gene voice over from 1980 is the next clip. Now we move on to some of that silent footage the first is from 1977 from Denver, Colorado which is about 10 minutes long featuring the Love Gun tour. The next few clips are the Muscular Dystrophy PSA from 1979 the band did for the Jerry Lewis telethon and some clips from a German 1975-76 TV appearance.

The big clip & main reason most fans are picking this DVD up and talking about it is due to the 16 minutes of silent footage from 1974. This is very cool due to the fact that Ace still has the silver in his hair and it's in color. Finishing up the DVD is some more raw footage from the Farewell press junket the band did as part of a satellite tour.

There are two errors on the chapter index one is for chapter 4 is says Kriss leaves Kiss and chapter 7 says 1974 footage but it's actually the 1977 footage nothing major but as a reviewer I have to point these things out. All in all the DVD is entertaining and is a journey that the die-hard fans or even just the casual fan will enjoy.

Bonus:

Unauthorized DVD update

Now as most fans know I did a review of the Unauthorized VHS here on Kiss Asylum for my Kiss Video Spotlight article so I figured it'd be a good idea to give fans an update for those who have or don't have the VHS version and may want to add it to their collection.

The DVD is the same as the VHS content wise however thanks to DVD technology you can go to the index of the DVD and you can now view new bonus footage from a 1984 In-Store Lick It Up autograph signing. There are also short bios of each member of band written by myself for this DVD.

I'm stating this here in my review as you will not see a credit on the DVD so me being the opportunist to plug myself endlessly, I figured now is a good time to mention that.

If you'd like to order these DVD's you can do so by visiting a local DVD or music store or right here online through KISS ASYLUM's KISS Shop.

Hope you all enjoyed this review and I'll see you soon with another Kiss Video Spotlight article in Summer of 2001
