I've been a longtime Kiss fan since I first heard "Alive" when I was 10. The 80's were rough for Kiss, the early 90's were better, and now, 1998 is very good for Kiss. This album is not a retro-70's Kiss, but the energy between the members is there. I'll rate each song first, then give you my overall opinion on the album.
Psycho Circus: Good first single. Easily the opening song for the new tour. Paul lets it all out on his singing on this one. Grade: A
Within: I like this one alot. This is contrary to what a number of fans have said. Gene's writing is great, and the beat is incredible. Grade: A
I Pledge...: Another good anthemic rocker. Paul and Ace shine on this one. Of all the songs on this album, this one is the one that would fit on "Destroyer". Grade: A-
Into the Void: I was a little disappointed on this one. Don't get me wrong I like it, Ace's guitar is great, but the chorus is a little outdatish. I guess I was expecting "Cold Gin". Grade: B
We Are One: Good concept, terrible song. I hope this one grows on me, but I would have to say it sounds like that 80's wannabe Kiss band, Firehouse. Grade: D
You Wanted the Best: All four members singing...sounds great. This will be another opening night concert song. I love Ace's guitar on this one. The chorus could've been better. Grade: B+
Raise Your Glasses: Why do we need another song praising us, the fans. We get the point. I wish this one was left off the album. I do agree it would make a good soda commercial. Grade: F
I Finally Found..: Peter's only song on the album. Unfortunately, it sucks. Would have rather heard a concept song based on "Hard Luck Woman". Grade: D-
Dreamin': Paul brings back the 80's. This might grow on me. Grade: C
Journey of 1,000 yrs.: This is a pretty good song. It does sound strange hearing Gene sing this though. Grade: B I was tough on this review, but overall, I would give this a B-. Don't get me wrong I will always like Kiss, but you have to admit Kiss will have some songs that aren't that great. I am more partial to songs such as, "Cold Gin", "She" ,and "Duece" than the more anthemic songs "Detroit Rock City" and "Rock n Roll All Nite". This one just had too many anthemic songs.
