I bought the CD the day it came out, and I was not disappointed at all. KISS had done a lot of marketing to promote the album, and as a true KISS fan of over 20 years, I think it's all deserved.
Overall, the album takes me back to the mid 70s. This album would have been the perfect follow-up to Love Gun. It's fun music, it gets you up, and it deserves to be played LOUD! It's classic KISS. It's loaded with anthems like Raise Your Glasses, You Wanted the Best, and I Pledge Allegiance to the State of Rock & Roll that fit in with the great ones like Rock and Roll All Nite and Shout It Out Loud. And the harder driving title track Psycho Circus just flat out rocks the whole way thru. I've heard that KISS is going to open the concerts with it. It will get everybody rocking from the beginning.
Ace rocks on Into the Void . It's one of my favorites on the album, and I hope they play it in concert. He's captured the Space Ace image in full effect. Unfortunately, its the only song written by Ace on the album.
Peter sings on one song, I Finally Found My Way, which I really don't care for. It's got all the soft sounds of Beth, but its sappier. They really didn't have to make room on the CD for the song. I would have preferred something else by Ace, or something with a more rocking sound by Peter.
Within, We Are One, and Journey of 1,000 Years (all written and sung by Gene) are all excellent. They are slower song, but have a very full sound and aren't too sappy to listen to. His song writing toned down from what we heard on the last couple KISS albums Revenge and Carnival of Souls. Don't look for anything like Domino or Hate on this album.
The only song I haven't commented on is Dreamin. It's kind of a grunchy song written by Paul and I believe Bruce Kulick. The best thing that I compare it to is I Still Love You, as far as the sound of it. I'm sure there is a much better comparison out there though.
All in all, I LOVE the album. I have anxiously awaited an album like this from KISS for 20 years, and I'm not disappointed. It goes straight back to the mid 70's when they were on top of the world and rock and roll was fun. My silly childhood heroes are back, and I'm loving it. I hope you do too.
