Psycho Circus Tour Reviews

From: Jan Laursen

Finally we had a chance to catch the Psycho Circus on tour here in Europe. Unfortunatly KISS skipped the chance to play in Denmark this time around, so a couple of busloads of KISS-crazed danes had to make the long trip (6 hours+) to Goteborg in Sweden! We were late, so we also missed the chance to meet Bruce Kulick at the KISS Expo, held at a venue nearby the Scandinavium! But okay, the main reason of our trip was obviously to see our heroes in action anyway! Upon entering the Scandinavium we were surprised that the tourprogramme was only 100,- sek.! That almost only half the price I had to cough up for one on the last tour! I was also very disappointed that there weren't that much merchandise on sale! Oh, sure, there was a lot of T-shirts, but otherwise there was very little on offer! The supportact, Buckcherry I think they were called, went on promtly at 7.30 pm, as promised on the ticket! The music was pretty okay, but they were only a minor distraction from the nights main event... KISS! Funny, to think about it really! In the seventies KISS had a lot of balls, and took anybody on as supportact... nobody could challenge the mighty KISS! Seeing Judas Priest, Cheap Trick, AC/DC etc. on the same bill as KISS must have been awesome! But these days it seems that KISS is a little more in doubt about their status as untouchable... they're certainly not bringing anybody out with them, that could make any impact at all!

KISS themselves hit the stage almost exactly at 8.30 pm., the earliest I have ever seen them start a show! That was pretty cool, as I hate long waits! I have read a lot of comments on the new show, both possitive and negative, and I will agree with most people on most points! Yes, it is disappointing, that they haven't included more new songs in the setlist! The setlist seemed to be exactly the same as on the U.S. leg of the tour, sadly without Makin' Love! And yes, it is also disappointing that there is so few changes in the show, it is almost the same they toured with on the reunion tour! Aside from Peter's flying drumkit, there were hardly any new effects at all, not even the lasers they had on Halloween night! This brings me on to one of the nice surprices of the evening: Peters drumsolo! I never really liked Peters solos, never felt he really had a good one in him, but the one he delievered last night was jawdroppingly awesome! Very well done, Catman!! I wish Ace and Paul could have learned a little from that! There has also been many negative comments about the 3-D effects! They were awesome at first, especially when Paul first held his finger out at us! I think we were all trying to grap on to it... COOL! But the effects quickly becomes a little repetitive, and frankly gave me a splitting headache! But so did the 3-D movies I saw in the eightties (Friday The 13th 3-D, and Jaws 3-D), so nothing new there! Except from that it was a great night! The band seemed very playfull at this show! Infact I don't think I have ever seen them acting like this before! It started with Gene spitting water on Paul, which started a longrunning waterfight between the two! It ended with Paul spitting water in the face of Gene, so that he missed a few words. of the opening verse of Rock And Roll All Nite... needless to say, Gene didn't seem very happy! In between we had also witnessed them fuck up the intro to I Was Made For Lovin' You, so that they had to restart the song, and Paul goofing a few lines of a song (which one I don't remember), because he was laughing! We also saw Gene squaredancing with Ace and more goofing around! I don't think I have ever laughed so much at a KISS concert! Like I said, I think it was one hell of a show! The only regret I had when I left the building, was that I now had to make another 6 hours+ journey, to get back home!
