Kiss played the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Sunday December 20th. I had the privelege of attending the concert. The show was preceded by a 30 minute set from Econoline Crush. They got a well received response from the audience considering they were basically an unknown band.
After a 30 minute intermission came the moment we all were waiting for "YOU WANTED THE BEST. YOU GOT THE BEST. THE HOTTEST BAND IN THE WORLD! KISS."
The curtain dropped and there stood our old buddies KISS who immediately tore into opener PSYCHO CIRCUS. This was followed by SHOUT IT OUT LOUD, DEUCE and DO YOU LOVE ME. DO YOU LOVE ME was the first song where the audience was required to use their 3-D glasses. Most of the audience seemed to be impressed however after a while it became a bit of a distraction. The set list continued pretty much the way same way it had in previous PSYCHO CIRCUS shows - FIREHOUSE, SHOCK ME, LET ME GO, R AND R, etc. Ace's guitar solo during INTO THE VOID was cool unfortunately the sound in the Bradley center is horrible and his solo was incredibly distorted. Gene's bass solo/blood spitting section was entertaining as always but I was disappointed that he didn't fly to the ceiling afterwards like he did at previous shows. GOD OF THUNDER and WITHIN followed. Peter's drum solo is now at the end of WITHIN instead of the middle of GOD OF THUNDER. I thought it was a nice change however many of the people around me didn't feel the same. As far as WITHIN is concerned I didn't think it sounded as bad as other reviewers have stated but it certainly wasn't the highlight of the show either.
Paul's flying bit in LOVE GUN was a lot of fun. This is actually the second time I've seen him do it. The first was when I saw them in Madison in April of 1997.
The show ended with ROCK AND ROLL ALL NIGHT. It's nice to see that they still seem to enjoy playing that song after all these years. Next came the encores. First Peter came out and sang BETH. Afterwards the rest of the band came out and Paul announced that it was Peter's birthday and immediately started singing HAPPY BIRTHDAY to him. The band play 2 more encores: DETROIT ROCK CITY and BLACK DIAMOND. While BLACK DIAMOND's ending was drastically altered, the explosions at the end of it increased significantly since the reunion tour. Finally and sadly the show ended. It was a highly entertaining night and I was glad to be there. I'm already looking forward to seeing them in Madison on December 27.
My only major gripe is the set list. I know plenty of people feel the same way I do. Yes I realize we probably won't be hearing any rarities like HARD LUCK WOMAN, FLAMING YOUTH, or ROOM SERVICE but there's still plenty of room for classics such as STRUTTER, HOTTER THAN HELL, and CHRISTINE SIXTEEN. All in all it was a great show and I would recommend it to anyone.
