It was a great night. My only complaint is that they ran out of 3-D glasses. My friends and I had to drive 200 miles to get to the concert, so it was somewhat disappointing that they didn't have any glasses for us. Of course we had second row tickets, so I guess I shouldn't really complain.
I knew that second row was probably going to be pretty close, but I didn't realize just how damn close we'd be. Two of my college friends, my girlfriend and I painted our faces up at home in Moorhead before we made the trip down. It was pretty amusing to go into the drug store before we left town and pick up some earplugs. Needless to say we received a wide variety of looks.
The concert itself was great, we spent the whole time trying to grab picks. Ace and especially Paul were pretty good about flicking the picks out to the crowd. Gene didn't seem to interested in tossing the picks, but I didn't really expect him to be. Between the four of us, we managed to nab 11 picks.
Paul was being quite the male slut that night. I know he usually plays to the ladies, but he was really playing it up more than I'd seen him do before. His energy kept up throughout the show and he seemed to be having a pretty good time. A moment that sticks out in my mind was when they had the live 3-D camera showing on the big screen and Paul flicked a pick towards the camera. It was a good toss that wizzed right by the camera. Both Paul and the camera man where apparently impressed with Paul's accuracy and exchanged a big smile.
Gene was amusing as usual that night, and seemed to be having a pretty good time. It was great to see the blood spitting and fire breathing right up close.
Ace played pretty damn good as far as I was concerned. I supposed you could get picky and say this or that was a little bit off, but overall I thought he was great. He's my favorite, so I can't say anything bad about him. The new trick during R+RAN was really cool. Although for myself anyway, the coolest part came while Paul was giving his little speech before Love Gun. Ace was off to the right having a drink while Paul was talking in the spotlight. I had my face painted like Ace and tried to get his attention. He gave me a little look that acknowledged my make-up and then tossed his glass out right into my hands. It was so damn cool. It's a red glass with a straw taped to it. On the side of the glass is written "ACE" in silver which I assume he signed himself, but the best part of it is that theres black on the end of the straw from where his lipstick rubbed off. So cool! The wierdest part of it was that in the fifteen to twenty feet that the cup travelled in the air to get from Ace's hand to mine, the glass never tipped upside down. There was still a little of what he was drinking left in it when I got it. For those that care, I smelt it, and my best guess is that it was some sort of ice tea--definately non alcoholic for all of you Negative Nancys out there.
I was really impressed with Peter's playing he was on the money. My girlfriend was wearing Peter makeup and he twice acknowledged her, once from his drum set and once from his stool for Beth. His drum solo was GREAT. I thought it was so much better than the reunion solo. Unfortunately when his drum set rose and went forward it stopped right above us so we couldn't see him play. But being hit hard by the cold smoke pouring out of it as it went back made up for that.
It was a great show, with or without the glasses. I would have loved to hear more variety in the tunes as opposed to the reunion show just like most other Kiss fans, but in the end it didn't bother me as much as I thought it would. It was a great time.
P.S. A little side note. I saw Cherokee Parks, the center for the Minnesota Timberwolves, at the show. He's tall.
