Psycho Circus Tour Reviews

From: Dave.G.Walsh@ca.eyi.com

Psycho Circus Tour - Montreal, Molson Center, December 1, 1998. Let me start by saying the show was good. Not awesome, not excellent, but not bad either. It certainly didn't have the magic that the reunion tour did in 96. Unfortunately, the set list is essentially the same as that show, with the 3 PC songs added. Psycho Circus is an excellent song and a great opener and the boys did an excellent job with it and Shout it Out Loud as the second song really got the crowd going. As for the rest of the set, essentially the same as the other reviews have indicated, except we got ripped off in Montreal because they didn't play Makin' Love or I Was Made for Loving You (both of which I was looking forward too because they are good songs and it would have been nice to add some different songs from 96).

Ace rocked the house with his songs Into the Void and Shock Me and his solos. Peter did an admirable job on the skins, and his solo was great (riser, etc.) Paul seemed to have a great time, especially with the Love Gun flying, and he definately has the most energy and enthusiasm in the band. Gene seemed bored and was more concerned trying to get fans to clap than he was with his playing and antics on stage.

The crowd was pretty good, but seemed to really lack interest in a couple of songs, especially Within which should be removed from the set list because it is not a good song on the album and doesn't get any better live. I could have done without King of the Nighttime World as well (songs like I Stole Your Love, Rock Bottom would have been better). Highlights of the night for me were definately Deuce, Cold Gin, Detroit, and RRAN. Overall, the playing was solid (especially Ace), Paul's voice was awesome, and they put on a good show. The 3D is cool for a while, and then it becomes more of a distraction so most fans kept the glasses off after the first few songs. I've been an avid KISS fan for about 18 years (I'm 27) and they did not disappoint last night, but they didn't surprise and blow me away either. I hate to say it, but they are going to have to add some different songs and change things up a bit with the routine (Gene blood with God of Thunder, fire with Firehouse) or fans will start to fade away on future tours. This was witnessed by the lack of a sellout crowd in Montreal and the band not even playing in Ottawa, both of which were packed to the rafters in 96 with much more fan enthusiasm. I hope things pick up as the PC Tour rolls on or Gene is going to get awfully tired of working the crowd for clapping. See ya again next tour
