Psycho Circus Tour Reviews

From: Dwayne Baron

... how was the show?... great... incredible... as good as the 1996-97 tour, maybe better... and that tour was great and incredible...

no exaggeration here... I've seen KISS sixteen times... the effects during God of Thunder were good... when Gene spit blood, the eerie atmosphere was there... the screen showed a close-up of a long strand of blood descending from his tongue... when he started singing after flying up to the platform, the flames came up from the stage... the flame throwers were great, a number of times during the show... more flames than on the last tour... Peter didn't do his drum solo during God of Thunder... I thought that was a good change... he did it during Within... Within was good, sort of loose, with Ace doing a good solo during the instrumental section... Peter's drum solo was great... I liked it better than the one he did on the last tour... and his drum platform was really something, rising up and out over the stage, with bright clear lights and some smoke or dry ice... I was 13 or 14 years old when I first saw KISS, on the Destroyer tour... in fact, that was my first rock and roll show... I wasn't old enough to drive yet, and one of my brothers, who was 8 or 9 years old, wanted to go, and my parents weren't so sure about my brother going to a concert, so they drove me and some friends of mine and my brother to the show, and they sat with my brother a few rows away from me and my friends, and my mother said, after the show, "that one guy must have been drunk or something", she was talking about Ace, I told her that he always moves that way... I always preferred the original KISS line-up, with the make-up, and I wasn't quite as into the years without Ace and Peter, though I went to some of the shows, and I liked a lot of the songs, though I don't know what any particular thing may have to do with another, but the atmosphere at that first KISS show was incredible, and my father really liked Peter's drum solo... on Into the Void, Ace's guitar smoked real well during his extended solo, and the sparkle shots from his guitar into the lighting rigs had a real bright clarity to them... in fact, the lighting throughout the show was incredible... better than the last tour... which had great lighting... but the lighting for this show is just real good, bright and clear, a lot of colors... the way that the lighting colors the dry ice at times is great... and the KISS logos are great... Paul moved around as well as ever... some real fancy footwork... he sounded good... he really swung far out into the crowd to the platform on Love Gun... Ace did the solo real well... great tone... Paul's intro to Deuce was good... he just said something to the effect of "this is from the first album"... Ace's soloing on Deuce and Let Me Go, Rock 'n' Roll and 100,000 Years is always good, I always want to hear those songs... the flame throwers during 100,000 Years are always great... Psycho Circus is a good opening song... they did Makin' Love, with some good soloing from Ace and some good drum thwomps from Peter... it was a good change to hear Shock Me without the extended solo section... Ace did a brief fast part during his solo on I Was Made For Lovin' You that was good... all of the effects on Rock and Roll All Nite were really spectacular... Ace's guitar swirled some bright fireworks during Rock and Roll All Nite... as far as the 3D effects, I thought they were good, some of them seemed to jump out at you, and the screen footage of them onstage was in 3D at times... it's a good element in the show... the show was great... I have tickets to see them in East Rutherford tonight, but I don't know if I'll make it to that show... hope to see them again on the tour...
