A KISS is still a KISS, even in 3-D
After the sold out shows in Holland in 1996 (Ahoy' in Rotterdam) and 1997 (Prins Van Oranjehal in Utrecht) KISS returned to a jampacked Prins Van Oranjehal in Utrecht again last Saturday, to rock Holland one more time. After opening act Buck Cherry, a huge red Psycho Circus curtain with yellow stars came down to hide the stage. Once the famous intro "You Wanted The Best, You Got The Best! The Hottest Band In The World: KISS!" had blasted through the PA, the curtain fell down with an enormous explosion.
At this point, the band had already started the party with the title track of their latest album Psycho Circus. On both sides of the stage a huge logo was flashing (the logo on stage left had a minor defect in the 'I', which was fixed a few songs later), while band played song after song. It took until the fourth song, Do You Love Me? before the crowd of 15,000 maniacs was treated on the first 3-D effects. A sign on the huge video screen announced it was time to put on the 3-D glasses that were handed out when you entered the venue. You could see pre-recorded 3-D footage as well as live shots from the stage. The way KISS hyped the 3-D spectacle in advance, made some newspapers in Holland ironically wonder what a concert in 2-D would look like...
The band was having a good time, and so were most of the fans. As demanded by the KISS Army, Firehouse included Gene's dangerous firebreathing act, and Ace's guitar solo (at the end of Into The Void) featured lots of smoke plus a tribute to famous movie director Stanley Kubrick (A Clockwork Orange, The Shining and Full Metal Jacket to name but a few), who died at the age of 70 on March 7. Before Ace fired rockets into the lighting rig, he said something about "2001" and played part of the theme to one of Kubrick's most famous movies 2001: A Space Odessey (a 1968 science fiction film about a computer taking control on a space ship). After Ace's guitar went up in smoke, he took another guitar and shot down three lights to the stage.
