Based on some of the reviews I have read from various stops along the farewell tour, I walked into the Philips Arena Saturday night expecting to see our four heroes going through the motions as they checked off another date on their itinerary and wired the cash to their respective retirement funds. The experience, however, was far from disappointing.
I thought a majority of this "review" was going to be a rant about the set list, comments on the same old bag of special effects or the tired, bloated appearance of the band. Gene's fondness for danish and cookies aside, the band came out and put on a show that was well worth the price of admission. Sure, there were a couple of missed notes and blown verses (Ace needing help from Paul with the first verse of Shock Me was horrifying until we learned after the show that Ace received treatment from a dentist for an infected tooth at the venue just before showtime), but the band was sharp, energetic and genuinely interested in leaving an unforgettable impression on the Atlanta crowd.
If you are going to these shows to be surprised, forget it. Instead, you should make the investment in your ticket prepared to celebrate the history and spirit of a Kiss concert (and everything it represents to you as an individual member of the Kiss Army) one last time. Thanks, guys, it was great!
