KISS Farewell Tour Reviews

From: Josh Womack
I just got back from what kiss says will be their last show in cleveland. if it is their last show, they certainly went out in style. i got to the gund around 7:45 and missed skid row, but i did see ted nugent. he was very entertaining as he played his classics such as "cat scratch fever", "stranglehold" and "free for all" among others. tommy aldrige was very good on the drums and marc mandoza perofrmed well to. the song "kiss my ass" really got the crowd goin' as he told janet reno, al gore and jesse jackson to kiss his you know what. nugent warmed up the crowd very well and put on quite a show for an opener. the gund was not sold out this night as it holds roughly 20,500. about 13-14 thousand showed up this time as it wasn't a double sellout like the reunion tour here july 19th and 20th of 1996. the crowd cheered as the black curtain fell with kiss written in sliver. the lights went down and it got very loud. i wasn't so much excited like i had been before (this was my 5th kisstoric concert) but more so just satisfied getting the chance to see my favorite band one more time. the curtain dropped and they were lowered on the stage. this time they were already playing "detroit rock city" and weren't still like on VH-1 opening night. DRC really got the crowd into it but i think i like "psycho circus" as a better opnener and DRC as a better oncore song. "deuce" was next as gene really showed strong vocals. "shout it out loud" was next and the whole place was belting out the chorus. my favorite solo of all time is in "shout it out loud" and tonight ace did not dissapoint. ace really hit the solos on the songs tonight especially on the ones which he was not part of at the time, "lick it up" and "heavens on fire". ace moved around the stage a lot more then he did on the reunion tour and pycho circus tour. his vocals were good on "shock me" but even better on "2000 man". the usual happened but it was still very exciting as ace's les paul shot rockets, smoked and spat frieworks in "rock and roll all night". "do you love me?" was very interesting as the screen showed moments in kisstory while the song acted as a soundtrack to the video coulage on the screen. would have liked to seen more bruce, eric singer and eric carr as looking at ace, peter, gene and paul got a little old after a while, but it was still a nice part of the show. " i love it loud" was a crowd pleaser as i think its one gene's best. good choice in adding the 80's songs but some of the 70's stuff like " dr. love" and "cold gin" could have been replaced by some gene stuff on revenge like "unholy" or "within" off pyscho circus. paul talked all through the night, a little to much, but you gotta love it when he preaches. his voice and body were very well prepared for the show. peter banged on the drums and did not look hesitate as some say he did on VH-1. you could tell gene had some put some weight on the face but he still put on a show kicking his feet and sticking out his tongue. he spat blood, flew, breathed fire. paul flew out in the crowd in "love gun" which was very cool. the group sounded and looked really great. they worked very well as a team. this kiss and setlist is not as good as the reunion show( 25 song set plus more pyro) but better then the pyscho circus stint. "beth" and "rock and roll all night" were the encores with confetti and fireworks topping it off. i saw kiss first when i was nine on the revenge tour, twice on the reunion tour and once on the pycscho cicus tour and farewell tour. there is no band that beats them live and i've been fortunate enough to experience the kiss bombastic spectacle.
