KISS Farewell Tour Reviews

From: Lori L. Faley
This is my assessment of the KISS show Wed. 5/24 at the Palace in Detroit Rock City. I have been a KISS fan for 25 years (fanatical) and seen them many times in concert. What I saw onstage that night was not the best KISS I've ever seen.

The first three songs [Detroit Rock City, Deuce, I Wanna Hear It Loud] rocked quite well, but Ace totally blew his solo on Shock Me. It was so bad I thought they were going to stop the song because Ace was so off in the sound and staying in the rhythm. I felt this was a turning point in the show, as the crowd became quieter, and more reserved from this point of the show until Love Gun and Black Diamond at the end of the show.

Watching the show progress, I did see Ace say "Detroit Rocks" and Peter yell out "Detroit" a few times....but there was hardly any uniqueness or spontaneity in the show. I know this from watching the Pepsi webcast last night [I didn't watch it until then so as not to ruin the show]. Every speech Paul gave, every choreographed move was EXACTLY the same. I was SOOOO disappointed. I can remember the old days when KISS played their songs at tempo, Peter Criss actually played his solo [not a washed down version], Ace was in tune and hit the notes and Paul would rouse the crowd with the yelling battles and admonitions to yell louder. There was no spontaneity this night. It does not mean I did not love seeing KISS one last time. It just made me realize that they aren't seemingly motivated by the same variables as in times past....they really seemed to be going through the motions.

While I am grateful they gave us fans one more chance to see them live, this was the first time I admitted to myself that it is time for them to move on. I sobbed and literally wailed as they played the last song on the playlist [Black Diamond] and the two encores [Beth & Rock N Roll All Nite]. I felt like they were dying right before my eyes. I still have not lost the sense of sadness since Wed. But I also am realistic to say the KISS of old and this KISS of today are not the same, and it saddens me. I will love KISS forever, they are tatotted on my arm. But if they are to tour and say "goodbye", I just wish it would have been the KISS of old.
