KISS Farewell Tour Reviews

From: Roland Viera
Below is the review I posted at rec.music.artists.kiss newsgroup. Set list for the show at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on 3/14/2000: Detroit Rock City
Shout It Out Loud
Deuce
Heaven's On Fire
I Love It Loud
Firehouse

After which the following songs were played (not in order of performance, sorry):

Cold Gin
100,000 Years
Let Me Go, Rock 'n' Roll
God of Thunder
Do You Love Me?
Calling Dr. Love
Shock Me
Lick It Up
Psycho Circus
Into The Void

Last songs of the show played were:

Love Gun
Black Diamond
I Was Made For Lovin' You
Beth
Rock and Roll All Nite

Overall a disappointing show in my opinion. This was basically the reunion tour all over again but with more pyros and a few different songs here and there. Paul's constant yapping to the crowd in-between songs was very annoying. He did fly to the back of the crowd and back on stage during Love Gun. Gene didn't seem to be into the show at all and basically appeared like he just wanted to get the show over with. He did his usual routine of breathing fire at the end of Firehouse, spitting blood during his solo, and repeated what he did on the reunion tour by flying up to the top of the stage before God of Thunder. Ace rocked, although at times while singing the chorus to Into The Void he actually forgot some of the words. He too did his usual smoking guitar bit during his solo and sang part of Cold Gin. He also looked a bit woozy towards the end of the show too, but that was just my observation. Peter did a good job on drums, and his vocals were excellent. I would have liked for the band to had played Beth acoustically like they did on the Unplugged album instead of playing the pre-recorded orchestra music. Peter had somewhat of an embarrassing moment after singing Beth. He walked off stage for some reason, and as Paul introduced the final song Rock and Roll All Nite to the crowd, Peter wasn't at his drum kit to start the song. The band had to wait for a few seconds before Peter finally ran back up to his drum kit to start the song. For their first encore Paul announced that they were going to play a song that they hadn't rehearsed for. That song ended up being I Was Made For Lovin' You. I didn't buy into that statement since the guy that's responsible for setting off the pyros knew at what points of the song to do so. If this is indeed their final farewell the band sure didn't act like it was. When the show ended you would think each member would have given a final bow and good-byes to the crowd. The band just walked off stage and the house lights came on. Not the kind of final impression you want to leave to your fans.

I didn't get a chance to see Skid Row, since by the time we made it into the building they had already wrapped up. They only played about a 35 minute set. From what I was told I didn't miss anything. Ted Nugent played about 45 minutes and was totally awesome, vintage Ted and totally loud and rude! By far Uncle Ted stole the show last night. KISS played roughly 2 hours and 15 minutes. The place was packed, although I don't know whether it actually sold out or not. Some seats behind each side of the stage appeared to be empty. I don't know the final attendance either.

Well, that's my review of KISS' Farewell Tour performance. Sorry about not listing the set list in exact order. I meant to bring a pen a notepad with me but forgot.
