Having went to the show the previous night and reading other reviews, I knew what I was going to get but tonight was different as I was in the first row of seats. I was closer to KISS in an arena than I get to most local bands playing in pubs around Melbourne.
Needless to say that this was an amazing experience and worth every bit I paid for. Tonight wasn't sold out as it was the 3rd show but you did'nt really notice and it was still a decent turnout. The set list was of the same as the other shows but had a few twists. In Paul's solo, he played Forever as well as Hard Luck Woman and Shandi. They turned into nice singalongs.
Then of course after the first encore came the medley. This was where they pulled out a couple of surprises. Ace started with a bit of New York Groove, then Parasite. Then they tried Goin' Blind. Ace had no clue how to play it and Paul was telling him as they went. It lasted till the first chorus. Up next was a bit of She then Eric started Strutter so we got the first verse and chorus of that. Then Ace started off another riff Rocket Ride! but he didn't get into the vocals. I thought that would be it but then they pulled out Mr Speed before RARAN.
A couple of other things I noticed was the amount of confetti at the end, everyone was covered in it. The whole show was mad scramble for guitar picks like throwing a chip to a flock of hungry seagulls. I didn't get one but thats life. The other thing that struck me was just how much of an asset Eric is to the band. His drumming and solo were sensational and his backing vocals really had strong presence and enhanced the songs. Everyone down the front seemed supportive of Eric so its time for those few people going on about Peter to get over it. The band seemed to enjoy themselves with Ace pouring a drink down Gene's back and Gene mucking around with some of the underwear thrown on stage at the end.
This was a fantastic show by a band on its farewell tour. Ironically, with Eric driving them, they seem at the top of their game. It would be great to have a farewell album from this line up and hopefully make it a longer goodbye.
