Any of you ever seen the movie Detroit Rock City? Well, I kinda experienced what those
4 guys in the movie did myself. Here's how it all started. Me and my brother, both long
time Kiss fans flew from Pittsburgh, PA, our home town, to Minneapolis, MN to see the
the boys on May 17th. So we fly on Vanguard Airlines from Pittsburgh to Chicago, got held
over for an extra hour due to thunderstorms, and then from Chicago to Minneapolis.
We get to our friends house, we're all getting ready to go to the show and an hour later we hear
the impossible: Kiss postponed the date until the next day because like us, they are stuck
in Chicago. This would have been no problem BUT we were scheduled to fly back to Pittsburgh
at 1:20 Thursday afternoon. So we called Vanguard and they wanted $220 per person to switch
our flight from Thursday to Friday. It couldn't of sucked any worse. We flew half way across
the country to see Kiss and turns out they didn't make the gig!
At that point, I figured all hope was gone and there was nothing we could do UNTIL we ran into 93.7 X morning show host Weasel at Little Chicago - a bar in Minneaplois where a Kiss pre-concert bash was happening. I told him our situation and he said to call him at the station the next morning and he would get me live on the air so I could tell the listeners our situation. So I call him at 7:00am the next morning, I get live on the air, tell everyone our story and what's happening, and said that if we couldn't get anyone to help that we were gonna be forced to fly back to Pittsburgh and miss what we came 900 miles to see. Get this. A woman named Roberta from Continential Airlines called the station, then called me at where we were staying and said she would try to help us out, but since we flew Vanguard she didn't know if she could help us. Nearly 2 hours went by, and we didn't hear back from her. At 9:20 I gave up. I figured we were goin' back home without seeing Kiss. At 9:25am, Roberta called back and said that she got us 3 stand-by flight tickets on Vanguard for Friday at 2:20pm Absolutly FREE!!!!! We COULD NOT BELIVE IT!!! We would be seeing KISS in Minneapolis after all!
I tell ya, it looked grim, and I figured all hope was gone. I figured I have to just catch them in Pittsburgh and that'd be it. I can't tell you how dissapointed we were when we came all that way to find the gig was cancelled. SO - I take this opportunity to thank Roberta, Continential Airlines, Weasel and the guys from the 93.7 X morning show. Thanks to you for helping us fellow Kiss fans and pulling through for us! We are very grateful for your help!
A note to fellow Kiss fans: This has taught me that no matter what the situation, to always try to help someone in any time of need. No matter what the cause, if you can help someone who's in a tough situation like we were, DO IT! You won't regret it - and the the people you help - they'll never regret it either.
Oh by the way - all 3 bands rocked! Ace was on - but took off his ring right before the solo for Detroit and missed the first few notes. The boys were in FINE form! Met Skid Row. Nice dudes. Ted was funny. But Kiss was ever fabulous!
