Let me start by informing the reader that I am a diehard KISS fan since 83,have seen KISS twice before on this tour(Meadowlands 6/27 & 6/28) and have seen them countless times on every tour since Animalize. This was the first time I have ever ventured to Sovereign Investor Bank Arena in Trenton. Fits about 10,000, I say there was only a few hundred seats empty in the back.....This was the smallest arena I have ever seen KISS in....Ive seen them at clubs on warmup gigs, but this was their "show."
Make no bones about it, the show is completely choreographed 100% of the time. If you've never seen KISS before, which I doubt anybody had not done at the Arena this night, then you are totally overwhelmed and amazed at the magnitude of the KISS experience. From the blood to the flames to the pyro to the flying acts, you are left in total awe. If you are in the majority of fans that are attending this tour, you have seen KISS before and are bidding them a well deserved farewell as one of the greatest rock band of all time. You are also seeing a show that offers no spontaneity, and is a complete replica of the show before......I completely understand the production side of a KISS show and how timing is of the utmost importance..........but do they have to play the same songs in the same order every night? does Paul Stanley (and I love Paul Stanley) have to say the same lines every night about the spirit of rock n roll?I mean, their high fives on stage are even choreographed.
....Are they that unprepared to play songs which they wrote on tour? Are you telling me that they can't play Strutter one night instead of Lick It Up?.....I knew what was going to happen before it did.......The show on this tour is unbelievable........I really just wish they would vary the set........Doesn't KISS know this?.......every decent review I read states the same thing.......its turning off a lot of KISS fans.......look at the tour stats...........the word is out that they're playing the same show and the empty seats have increased.....Ive said my peace.....now onto this particular show.........
Musically.........they were very tight....I noticed the deeper tone I read Gene is taking on harmonies in Do You Love Me and Heavens On Fire.....Peter screwed up the ending of Deuce but recovered nicely........my seats , which were given to me for free from my main man Gatz, were on the side of stage left.........great for really getting a good look at the band on stage......they were very animated, and they brought a surprisingly large amount of pyro for the small Sovereign Bank Arena.....the crowd was hot all night.......lots of make-up and diehards everywhere!
They really ripped Let Me Go and Cold Gin..........Ive read reviews that hint that Ace might not be singing on Cold Gin......he sang every word tonight for sure......Peter is adding more cowbell and was on time all night(even though the majority of his fills are not very complex at all)........overall, they performed very well in Trenton and got a great response from the crowd........Its just that Im the time of KISS fan that expects a little more.......i read what they did in Syracuse with the medley before R&RAN......I also read they played I Was Made for Loving You in Quebec City......this is happening far too few times.......the show I saw was the same one Ive read about so many times and seen twicebefore........I will see them at the Garden when they finally call it quits.....If that final show is the same show Ive seen three times......then my thoughts of KISS and how they went out will not be as kind as they were in this review.....all said and done, its still the best ! show on the road
