December 21 DARK LIGHT: A World Without Heroes II From: Dale Sherman As some of you may remember, I wrote the original KISS novel, A WORLD WITHOUT HEROES, back in 1998-1999 as really just something fun to take my mind off of other pressing writing projects. Chris, Beth and John here at KISS ASYLUM were kind enough to present the chapters here on a regular basis at the time and as it turned out, the book ended up becoming a successful project for KAOL (www.kissarmyonline.com), with illustrations and even a CD of original covers done by a variety of excellent fan-artists (and I recommend getting the book just for the CD if nothing else). When that novel was finished, I thought my work was done and I could sit back and relax. However, I began getting a lot of letters and emails from people who were asking when I would start on a sequel. Frankly, I never planned on one. I thought the story I wanted to tell was all there in the first novel and there was no need to do anything more. Besides, I had my other writing projects to worry about and this was more of a kick than a job, so I just never thought it would happen and told people as much over the past year. That changed earlier this year when it occurred to me that perhaps there were some questions left unanswered in the first novel that would be worth considering for a sequel. Add that to the fact that I ended the original novel in 1985 and never resolved what happened to the final Talisman, and ideas started clicking away in my head. So here's the result, and I dedicate it to everyone that kept asking me when a sequel was going to come out. If you want anyone to blame, blame them! To those of you coming back after the first one, I hope you'll enjoy this one as much or even more than the first; for those who are first-timers, I hope you'll want to go back to the first novel sometime to see what had happened before. To all, I would be interested in your comments when and if you have any to make. Just don't start mentioning about "finishing up the trilogy" after this one is finished! You don't want to see a grown man cry. The KISS Army OnLine (KAOL) has donated over $10,000 towards both Children's Hospital and the Alzheimer's Association thanks to so many KISS fans who have purchased these CDs for their collection. In February, MusiCare Online will release the 3rd and final KISS Tribute CD, "KAOL 3 - The Spirit of '78" in hopes of raising several thousand dollars more as we say goodbye and bring the KAOL series to a close. Those that currently own the first 2 KAOL editions (Music From The Folder and Creatures of The Net) have been patiently awaiting the arrival of the grand finale. And what a finale it is! To end the Trilogy we have put together a double CD set that is unmatched by any other Tribute CD. The Spirit of 78 will include a packed audio CD filled with 23 professional covers from the 1978 solo album releases. Bands from all over the world participated and we've even produced a cover of Ace's "What's On Your Mind" in Japanese! The closing number, Paul's "Goodbye", has been re-written for KAOL and 2 dozen international artists came together to sing on this final track in a "We Are The World" style finale. The second disc will be a CD Rom packed with pro shot music videos as well as studio footage of your favorite KAOL artists performing. Exclusive rare footage of Gene's 1972 personal wall calendar with handwritten notes on the Wicked Lester recording sessions and the very first makeup showcase for Epic will be part of this Video CD. It will also hold bonus MP3 tracks not found on the audio disc. For the KAOL and KISS collector's, we've also inserted a Spirit of '78 refrigerator magnet. There's far too much content and material in both the audio and video portions to reveal here but it's a package every KISS fan should have. Plus, 100% of the money is going straight to Alzheimer's Disease. So when can you order this? Right after New Year's! We'll be starting the pre-order period the first week in January. For a full song listing and more details please visit the KAOL website at: www.kissarmyonline.com. In our opinion, the fact that KISS hasn't even been nominated exposes the hypocrisy of this organization. Would KISS' induction into the Rock + Roll Hall of Fame really make a difference? Certainly it would, as KISS' respectability battle rages on, it would awaken the global music industry to recognize them as a relevant band. Together we CAN make a difference, and in the process, thank KISS for 27 years of craziness, great shows, and great music! KISS' contributions to Hard Rock/Heavy Metal music genre are numerous and should not be overlooked or shunned any longer! PLEASE join us in our efforts to persuade the Rock + Roll Hall of Fame Foundation to nominate and subsequently induct KISS into the Rock + Roll Hall of Fame. Please fill out our form and give your support! Though we do ask for your e-mail address, it is NOT shown in the list of people who have signed for security purposes. Some of the album focus' will use reference material never before available, plus some of the best interviews with the band already available. We are going for accuracy in our attempt to provide a completely clear picture of the status of the band for each release. The "KISS Album Focus" will be your definitive look back on KISS and their albums. Sit back and enjoy your KISStory lesson with KISS ASYLUM & KISSFAQ.COM's "KISS Album Focus." "Ace Frehley's involvement in KISS was nearly zero following the release of the "Elder" in late 1981. While he had limited his participation in the band due to the direction that the album was taking it was not until 1982 that his departure became apparent both to the band and himself. However odd it may seem Ace was at least willing to participate in the promotional efforts for the Creatures Of The Night album, even though he had had no involvement in the recording process whatsoever. By the time the Creatures tour kicked off it was clear that Ace was not returning to the band. Vinnie, with his makeup and costume, was so obviously a replacement for Ace rather than a substitute, for such an effort would not have been made were he just a short-term stand in. In December 1981 Ace made the decision to quit the band, though at the time this was mostly apparent only to himself. On December 15th Ace joined the band in the filming of the Friday's TV show which would be shown the following month. It is interesting to note that also present at the Friday's show, in the audience, was one Blackie Lawless with whom Ace would produce demos for his band WASP..." But whatever the band does, wherever the band goes, says KISSer Gene Simmons, "Without the fans, we're nothing." The new VH1 series "FanClub" seeks out those diehard devotees whose lives are defined by the music they love -- and finds that it could be the dentist who's about to begin a root canal job on you -- when "FanClub: KISS" premieres Friday, December 22 at 10:00 p.m. (ET/PT). "FanClub: KISS" is the first of eight weekly editions in the new series, executive produced by acclaimed filmmaker Joe Berlinger ("Paradise Lost," "Brother's Keeper," "Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2") and featuring some of today's hottest documentary directors. Sometimes bizarre, sometimes funny, sometimes touching, the cinema verite-style series "FanClub" is about real-life people who really love music, and whose unusual stories will compel even the non-fan to listen. Scouring concert lines, surfing the web and spending time with music fans around the country who go beyond normal limits to form deep connections to their favorite rock star, "FanClub" also explores the bands that inspire this intense devotion, talking to the stars themselves in extensive interviews and spotlighting exclusive concert footage. "FanClub: KISS" features extensive footage from the band's current farewell tour, shot in Detroit, as well as a recent official auction of KISS memorabilia held in Hollywood, plus an interview with Bill Starkey, original KISS Army co-founder, who talks about the club's early struggles to get the band's records played on the radio. And reflections by KISS themselves in new interviews illustrate the band's heartfelt loyalty to their followers: "When I get up on stage, I'm trying to give our fans what they deserve, because they've stood by us through thick and thin," notes Paul Stanley. "And after 30 years of nay-sayers saying that this would never last, it's gone on for this amount of time and really what we're doing on this farewell tour is celebrating the victory not only of the band, but of the fans. It's something we all believed in, and something that we made flourish and thrive, like a virus that you couldn't kill."[More...] [Post Your Comments] VH1's Fanclub: KISS - Ron's Story From: Ron Ivanjack I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Ron Ivanjack. I'm 25 and have been a Kiss fan since I was 4. For that reason, I was thrilled when I was selected to be featured on the new VH-1 show Fan Club. I sent in an email describing how Kiss affects my daily life just like hundreds of others but VH1 and I corresponded back and forth several times before they asked me to submit a 30-minute video. A few days later it was set-VH-1 was coming to film me. The only hang-up was that they wanted to film me at work but my company is privately owned and very protective. I had to plead to the heads of the Human Resources and Legal departments. Fortunately both knew what a big Kiss fan I am and we received global approval. "Bruce Howard Kulick was born on December 12th, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up in Queens with his brother Bob, it was Bob who first made moves into an interest in music. It would be Bob's lead that would long provide a push for Bruce throughout his life. Bruce remembered, "My brother got a guitar, and the next thing I knew I kind of was attracted to it as well. The acoustic guitar in the house became the first thing I started to play cords on. Eventually I started to take some lesions, and I learned from my brother of course. I picked it up quite easy, and I was happy not playing sports, but holding my guitar. It took a little time before I started to play in bands. I started to play with some people at my high school, and we would do cover songs. I actually played bass then because my brother played the guitar..." With the recent success of Butterfields' KISS auction, and the booming e-commerce Internet bidding website EBAY, Kulick and Tashjian saw a great opportunity to offer celebrity collectables to a mass public and raise money for charity. Items will be offered via EBAY, and portions of the proceeds will go to the ERIC CARR FOUNDATION funding St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. November 24, 2000 marked the 9-year anniversary of KISS drummer Eric Carr's untimely death at age 41 from cancer related complications. Long before his diagnosis with cancer, Carr often donated both his time and money to needy children, including those at St. Jude's Hospital. Collectors can expect a varied selection of one-of-a-kind items to bid on, including a custom-made Ibanez guitar used by Marilyn Manson's JOHN5 on last year's "Mechanical Animals" tour. In addition, a Jim Kelly (Buffalo Bills #12) autographed football, authentic KISS memorabilia and personal affects donated directly from Kulick's own private collection. Expect to see a KISS "Asylum" RIAA Certified Gold Album award, vintage KISS guitar picks, touring swag, backstage passes, and other rare items. Additional KISS artifacts donated by friends and fans will include several sets of rare drumsticks taken directly from Carr's own touring case, posters, DVD's, and more. Private merchants have also donated items, but most items will be celebrity owned or related. CELEBRITY NEWS AUCTIONS opens officially December 12, 2000. "Eric was a very charitable person," says Kulick, "and to be involved in a website that will give money to his foundation while having people bid on celebrity collectables is something that I really think he would have enjoyed. It also gives me a great opportunity to empty some of the closets of my own rock trivia for a good cause." Adds Tashjian, "we are encouraging celebrities in music, film, sports, TV, animation, even private merchants to get involved with donating items that can be auctioned with Eric's fundraiser in mind. We'll continue to provide a service for celebrities to auction their personal collections without the guilt or pressure of donating some or all of their spoils, but so far, their generosity has been immense!"
