Gene Simmons, the long-tongued lead singer of rock band KISS, didn't attend his 33rd Newtown High School class reunion last weekend. He also didn't even venture to Corona, where he went to Public School 92 from 1959 to 1963. He even bypassed his old Jackson Heights neighborhood, where he went to Joseph Pulitzer Junior High School 145 from 1963 to 1965. And he didn't even walk past his old apartment building at 33-51 84th St. "There's no action in Queens," Simmons said during a recent interview at the Righa Royal Hotel in Manhattan. But that didn't stop the infamous 51-year old rock 'n' roll star from reminiscing about the good times he had while growing up. And, yes, most of the memories involved girls and music. One of the fondest memories? His first French kiss at a Joseph Pulitzer JHS dance. "I remember she stuck her tongue in my mouth and I thought I was going to throw up," Simmons said. And his first venture into musical theatre at Joseph Pulitzer. "Oklahoma," exclaimed Simmons, who then broke into song. "Pore Jud Is Daid..." And there was his first romance with a young woman who lived on 37th Ave in Jackson Heights. "I happened to mention it in the schoolyard to one of the guys and told him, 'Shhh, don't tell anybody!' It quickly spread around the school," Simmons smiled. Simmons didn't sing or play guitar in a rock band yet. Heck, he didn't even wear makeup, high heels, drool fake blood and wiggle his long red tongue. But he started establishing a reputation as a ladies man. He is not married, but has two children, Nicholas and Sophie, with former Playboy Playmate Shannon Tweed. Back then in Queens, he wasn't known as Gene Simmons. He was known as Gene Klein, born Chaim Witz Jr. in Haifa, Israel. His mother emigrated with him to Williamsburg, Brooklyn. She Americanized his name to Klein. It wasn't long before they settled into a six-story family apartment building in Jackson Heights. At Pulitzer, Simmons worked on the school newspaper, and counted music class as his favorite. "I remember really liking the music class of Mrs. Kassorla," Simmons said - for both the music and the girls. "One day a young lady who sat in front of me in Mrs. Kassorla's music class asked me to stick out my tongue and show her friend the silly thing I did when I wiggled it, and I never thought that there was anything to it, " Simmons said. He had the tongue, the vocal chords and was getting the girls - now all he had to do was form a band. It didn't happen at Elmhurst's Newtown High School. He quietly kept to himself. "I was never in a social group because I never got high or drank. I was in the choir at Newtown," Simmons said. So quiet, in fact, that most of Simmons' classmates, such as Sena (Rosenberg) Pelletier and Phyllis (Mislov) Brink never knew that Gene Klein is Gene Simmons until they were told this week. Simmons reached for his Newtown High School yearbook, examining his very conserative picture. "It's not so bad," he said. Here's a bit of an update on the Montreal KISS Expo: The show is still scheduled to take place at the Delta Hotel at 475 President Kennedy in Downtown Montreal on September 9th 2001. Gene Simmons' appearance on Crossing Over with John Edward will air on or around August 22, according to kissonline.com, which also reports that Simmons--who's now sporting shorter hair for various film and TV roles--has some interesting possible projects in the works: a movie with basketball star Shaquille O'Neal and with DC Comics, a KISS meets Superman miniseries and a KISS vs. Lobo story. As some of you may remember, I wrote the original KISS novel, A WORLD WITHOUT HEROES, back in 1998-1999 as really just something fun to take my mind off of other pressing writing projects. Chris, Beth and John here at KISS ASYLUM were kind enough to present the chapters here on a regular basis at the time and as it turned out, the book ended up becoming a successful project for KAOL (www.kissarmyonline.com), with illustrations and even a CD of original covers done by a variety of excellent fan-artists (and I recommend getting the book just for the CD if nothing else).When that novel was finished, I thought my work was done and I could sit back and relax. However, I began getting a lot of letters and emails from people who were asking when I would start on a sequel. Frankly, I never planned on one. I thought the story I wanted to tell was all there in the first novel and there was no need to do anything more. Besides, I had my other writing projects to worry about and this was more of a kick than a job, so I just never thought it would happen and told people as much over the past year.That changed earlier this year when it occurred to me that perhaps there were some questions left unanswered in the first novel that would be worth considering for a sequel. Add that to the fact that I ended the original novel in 1985 and never resolved what happened to the final Talisman, and ideas started clicking away in my head. So here's the result, and I dedicate it to everyone that kept asking me when a sequel was going to come out. If you want anyone to blame, blame them! To those of you coming back after the first one, I hope you'll enjoy this one as much or even more than the first; for those who are first-timers, I hope you'll want to go back to the first novel sometime to see what had happened before. To all, I would be interested in your comments when and if you have any to make. Just don't start mentioning about "finishing up the trilogy" after this one is finished! I've been a huge Kiss fan since about 1979. I've gone to every Kiss show they have played in Vancouver B.C. where I live. Yes I did go to the New Years Eve show 2000, best show I've ever seen. As a hobby I've been playing around with putting Kiss makeup on celebs and such. I did this one the other day. It seems fitting somehow with the Final Fantasy movie out. When the Farewell Tour will be over and KISS is no longer a band, what will the individual band members do to fill their time? Will they still do things as a foursome and at least keep the name KISS alive or are they all going to continue on their own? Will Gene make sure the merchandise assault continues or is he going to focus even more on his Hollywood career again, will Ace manage to get a decent record deal and release a solo album, will Paul succeed on Broadway and really build a career in the world of musicals, will Peter retire at his new house on Hawaii or is he going to put it off as a jazz musician, etc. etc.? As you can see there are so many questions, that nobody - not even Gene, Paul, Peter or Ace - can answer until it actually happens (or not) but as no one ever died of speculating let's just take an indepth look (again) at what the future might hold for the KISS members and their fans. "The MTV Unplugged appearance put the word "Reunion" firmly in the minds of many of the parties connected with the KISS business. Ace and Peter could be rejuvenating factor to the band, who was perhaps ready to surrender to nostalgia, and more importantly cash in at a time where the battle for sales in the 1980's had worn down Gene and Paul's resistance to the idea. While in the months following the Unplugged session the individual entities did their own thing, by December negotiations were firmly underway for a full fledged reunion of the original KISS lineup. That it was going to happen was often hinted at, but the lid was kept remarkably tight as GAPP, Gene and Paul's business partnership, concluded negotiations with George Sewitt, Ace and Peter's manager in January 1996. Thomas Wictor, contributing editor for Bass Player magazine, has released a compilation of the unedited versions of the interviews he used for several of his contributions to that magazine. The book, entitled "In Cold Sweat: Interviews With Really Scary Musicians", contains interviews with bass players Peter Hook (New Order), Jerry Casale (Devo), Scott Thunes (Frank Zappa's live band), and KISS' own Gene Simmons. Anyone who read Thomas' cover story interview with Gene in Bass Player back in 1996 knows what a detailed and comprehensive interview it was, delving into numerous areas that aren't the "standard" topics of Gene interviews. "In Cold Sweat" contains the entire, unabridged transcription of the conversations that were used to compile that benchmark Gene interview. Below is just a sample of what the impressive 84 page transcription contains:
Thomas Wictor: I'd composed a letter I was going to write to my editor, saying, "Mr. Simmons doesn't have time to do the interview, based on the phone conversations we've had."
Gene Simmons: I don't do chitchat stuff. You know, I started hearing your life story. What, when, where, how. See?
TW: No.
GS: I mean, when you started talking on the phone, I started to get the impression you were sitting back, getting comfortable, ready to have a conversation. I'm going, "Just give me when you're available. If you're not, boom. [Mimes slamming down telephone.] I'll get back to you." Life's short. Gotta move on.
TW: Sure. Yeah. Okay. It is, in that sense. But I'd never experienced such a, a brusque way of doing business. It doesn't inspire--
GS: People to like me?
TW: No, it's not a question of liking or disliking. I just figured that the interview was down the crapper, so I was already composing the letter to my editor letting him know.
GS: Good.
TW: Good? Why good?
GS: Don't be too available. Girls know this better than guys.
TW: Yeah, but I don't want to marry you; I just wanted to get an interview.
GS: Same thing. It's all perception. Perception is all. Before first impression. And the reality is I don't have time for that stuff. This is my life. [Pulls out and shows me his date book; every line is filled with names, dates, and phone numbers.] I mean, I don't have time for that stuff. You know, you're in here as one thing, but you know, I don't have time! I mean, life to me is--you've got the mallet in the funhouse--you've got those beavers sticking their heads up and down in the holes, and you go pow-pow-pow! Try to hit as many as you can. And that's it.
TW: Doesn't it get lonely, though?
GS: It's the best! Don't believe the idea of success and power being lonely. You can have anyone, at any time, for any reason. On any level.

As you've probably heard, KISS tribute band Sweet Pain has decided to branch out into making original music under the new name Killaroo, though there are still copies of their awesome tribute "KISS 'em All" available to order (click here for review). The band line-up will remain the same -- Michel Zwartjes (vocals), Steve Boender (guitar), Ron van Dijk (bass), Michel van Tongeren (lead guitar), and $pike Bakker (drums). Killaroo is doing their own material now, and describes it as Power Bounce Metal!
