KISS still setting the stage on fire
From: Fayetteville Observer
by Stacy Peterson
The greasepaint, flames, dragon-teeth boots and fake blood is back.

This summer's Rock The Nation Tour stands out from last year's tour of KISS and Aerosmith, which also played Alltel, both in song choices and in personnel.

The current KISS tour features an equally impressive stage show but with deeper song choices and more flying above the crowds by vocalist and guitarist PAUL STANLEY and bassist and singer GENE SIMMONS.

A glimpse at recent set lists shows such concert rarities as "War Machine," "She," "Got To Choose" and "Makin' Love."

The tour is also different because original members PETER CRISS and ACE FREHLEY have been replaced with drummer ERIC SINGER and guitarist TOMMY THAYER. You may not notice the change at first because both are wearing the same make-up and costumes as the originals.

Band leaders Simmons and Stanley have both said recently that the personas and characters of KISS are more important than the single members. That, and the additions of Thayer, who also toured with KISS last year, and Singer, have enabled the band to play different material than just the standard hits.

KISS has played in Fayetteville nine times over the years, including two stops a year in the initial years of 1974-76. It was during that period that the band's over-the-top makeup and stage shows made them a huge draw in America before moving on to Japan and Europe.

Much of the band's history will be summed up at 11 p.m. Saturday, July 24 when the VH1 music channel features "When KISS Ruled the World."

All four original members will look back on the early years and talk about the magic and mass marketing that has made the band as much a product as a music group.
