ERIC SINGER & Friends at The Annandale Hotel, Sydney
From: KISSAsylum.com
by Kaori Hashimoto
...So, ERIC SINGER has come back to our shores once again - albeit with Alice Cooper this time. Even more exciting news was, he and his Alice band mates made a welcome decision to stage their own show!

It was great to see Eric play up close and personal in his own skin (and his blond locks are back, too!). He makes a cute Cat with KISS all right, but it's still a 'borrowed' identity after all...

The main act was capably supported by our own STAND from Melbourne - well known as the backing players for the likes of BRUCE KULICK (KISS) and Mike Tramp (White Lion). They showcased their soon-to-be-released numbers, plus KISS' eighties hit, Is That You, at which the crowd went wild!

By the time Eric & Friends came on stage, the place was absolutely packed with several hundred punters and, sure enough, the band played off the crowd's energy to the max. You were basically seeing the Alice Cooper band (minus Alice, of course - he was busy with golf on his days off!) but they thoroughly enjoyed a freewheeling set list in this spontaneous and carefree atmosphere.

They started off with Strutter - one of KISS' earliest hits - and went on to play several other classic KISS numbers including She, Black Diamond and C'mon And Love Me. I was also very happy to hear Nothin' To Lose with Eric on vocals - the number I've personally come to regard as his 'signature song'.

They also played some popular Alice numbers (No More Mr. Nice Guy & School's Out). Throw songs such as Surrender (Cheap Trick) and Cherry Bomb (The Runaways) in the mix, and what you get is a jolly good concoction of classic rock hits...?For the latter, Alice Cooper's daughter, Calico, made a surprise appearance as a guest lead vocalist. Pity she wasn't wearing THAT infamous lingerie... But then again, if Alice saw his own daughter in such a racy outfit, he would have gone berserk...

One of the highlights was AC/DC's cover, Highway To Hell. Damon Johnson (v & g) belted it out in a high-charged tribute to one of the greatest ever Aussie bands, doing a respectable job of mimicking the inimitable vocals of Brian Johnson.

Unfortunately, it was rather hard to hear the vocals clearly at times - either the microphones couldn't quite keep up with the energetic singers, or the guys were just playing their instruments a touch too loud in their enthusiasm...

But in the end, that didn't matter one bit - for my hearing had already been affected by sinus at the time anyway, and it was almost completely gone about halfway through the show...

Tattoo-clad Chuck Garric (v & b) is such a character for a bassist - pit him up against GENE SIMMONS any day and he'll be right up there in the showmanship stakes. (Whether he can fly up onto the lighting rig remains to be seen, however...)

In fact, all the band members were quite playful throughout, and it was quite obvious that they were doing this show for sheer pleasure and enjoying every minute of it. At one stage, Ryan Roxie (v & g) even hopped up on the shoulders of a roadie while churning out a guitar riff.

There were the occasional missed chords and mixed-up words, for sure, but all of that didn't matter one bit, either. This was more akin to an impromptu jam session rather than the watertight and controlled environment of a larger concert. And the crowd absolutely LOVED it.

The show climaxed with the great KISS anthem, Rock And Roll All Nite (minus the confetti and fireworks) and everybody who attended the gig - KISS fan or not - had a great night indeed.
