Simmons' Rock School
From: Seattle Post-Intelligencer

This should do wonders for our relationship with the British. VH1 sent tongue-wagging GENE SIMMONS over to Christ's Hospital Boarding School in Horsham. There, the KISS icon entered a classroom — "MY NAME! Is Mr. Simmons. ROCK! is about grabbing everybody's attention" — and proceeded to teach young classical music prodigies how to get the Led out.

Not as easy as you might think. The goal is to become good enough to open for Motorhead. The show is "GENE SIMMONS' Rock School," coming Aug. 19. And the kids' rigorous classical training doesn't mean a thing to him.

"Almost anybody who plays electric guitar or drums can't read or write music and...but for the grace of God, would probably be asking you if you want fries with that," he said. "...Classical musicians are real musicians. We -- all of the rest of us are entertainers who are lazy, never took the time to learn to play our instruments properly and can't read or write music. Somehow, though, we get by."

Poor kids. Or is it poor Gene? They had no idea who he was.

But they obviously had an effect on Mr. Tongue. Simmons showed up Thursday morning with the school's deputy head mistress and two of his pupils, encouraging them like a good teacher. Apparently it's not too far out of character. "For a short time I taught sixth grade in Spanish Harlem in New York City," he said, "and quit because this band that I was in started wearing makeup and high heels and decided to go out and make lots of money."
