Rock School
From: Kansas City Star
GENE SIMMONS, the lead singer of rock group KISS, has turned into a cable TV impresario, concocting male beauty pageants for Oxygen ("Mr. Romance"), creating a cartoon show for Nickelodeon ("My Dad the Rock Star") and planning the launch of a channel he calls NGTV (No Good Television) this fall.

He came here to promote "Rock School" (Aug. 19, VH1), a reality show in which Simmons takes a job as a teacher at a classical music school and gets the students to start a rock band.

Simmons made it clear that his show was not to be confused with "School of Rock," the movie in which Jack Black took a job as a teacher at a prep school and got the students to start a rock band. "School of Rock" is set in the United States, while "Rock School" was taped in England. Jack Black is an actor who played a teacher for a few weeks, while Simmons is an entertainer who played a teacher for a few weeks. See? Completely different.

"Classical musicians are real musicians," said Simmons, whose quotes sound better if you can hear them being read by the comedian Jackie Mason, whom Simmons sounds exactly like. "Almost anybody who plays electric guitar or drums can’t read or write music and, but for the grace of God, would probably be asking you if you want fries with that."
