Shaun Micheel From: MemphisMagazine.com sent in by Tabitha Memphian Shaun Micheel has been a member of the PGA Tour since 1992 and will be playing to a hometown crowd at this month's FedEx St. Jude Classic (May 26-29) at Southwind. The 36-year-old graduate of Christian Brothers High School won the 2003 PGA Championship (and with it a cool $1.08 million). However well he plays in the FESJC, we know one thing for certain. Micheel has great taste in music. We've got to work on your Memphis track record. You've missed the cut the last two years . Last year was very difficult. It was my first year playing in Memphis since being the PGA champion, so I probably put some extra pressure on myself. It's tough for me to play at home. There are a lot of demands on my time. You'd think that would make me work even harder, and maybe I do. Maybe I work too hard. Everybody's pulling for me; maybe I just need to pull a little harder for myself. We can talk golf any ol' day. What's your favorite KISS record? I like Double Platinum. It's got all their best stuff. And a couple of years ago, my wife bought me the box set, which has a bunch of demo tracks, lots of songs that didn't make it through production like PAUL STANLEY singing "God of Thunder." What came first . . . golf or ACE FREHLEY? ACE FREHLEY. In junior high school [at Mt. Pisgah in Countrywood], I saw this group called KISS, and my mom was a little reluctant to buy that sort of thing, but she bought Alive! for me. It kind of evolved from there. I still have the actual [vinyl] albums. More impressive: GENE SIMMONS spitting blood or breathing fire? Probably the fire. I hate to give away secrets, but that blood is nothing more than eggs and food coloring. But putting that kerosene in your mouth; I'd think that would have some impact over the years. He's caught himself on fire a couple of times. I don't think there's ever been a group in history that puts on the show they do. They spend a lot of money on each show. Were you more nervous the day you met Jack Nicklaus or PAUL STANLEY? Jack Nicklaus. The first year I was on tour, I signed with Golden Bear management. When I went down to meet some of the people, I was somewhat intimidated. I didn't know what to say when I went into [Nicklaus'] office. But he's a great guy, and I've gotten to know his family fairly well. I played against his son Gary in college. [Micheel went to Indiana, Gary Nicklaus Ohio State.] Which would rock your world more, winning a Green Jacket at the Masters or singing "Detroit Rock City" at Madison Square Garden? I'm not a good singer, so [the Garden] will never happen. Last year, I felt like I could win the Masters because the golf course suited the way I play the game. But the greens were a little too fast for me. That was the first time I'd played there. I watched that golf tournament ever since I was a young kid, and always wondered what it was like to drive down Magnolia Lane. Augusta is a really special place because, when you play there, it means you've done something to earn it. Are there other rock fans on the PGA Tour? Tiger Woods seems like a Styx kind of guy. Tim Petrovic is a huge Doors fan. I don't know how many other KISS fans are out there. None of them are really going to admit it. I'm pretty open; everybody knows. There are all types — readers, guys that go to movies — and then there are guys like me, who enjoy listening to music. |
