Q & A With Bill Aucion
From: KISSnews.de

1) Do you know, why Paul has changed his costume in 1980, but the others did not?

Paul often had ideas about changing his clothing after a photo shoot. The other members of the band were happy with their clothes and didn't want to change. Paul always had an idea what he wanted to do and demanded changes.

2) Do you know what happened to the first print of the "Dynasty" tourbook with the "Return of KISS" cover (Kiss in front of the NY skyline in Dynasty outfits). It listed the incorrect tourdates on the inner back sleeve. But not just the tourdateas, the whole cover has been changed. Why did that happen and on how many shows was the "The Return of KISS" tourbook available at the concerts?

Tour books were printed in advance of the tour and sometimes tour dates were changed after the printing. We sold the tour books at the first couple of shows and then changed the book according to the correct dates and subsequently also changed some pictures including the cover.

3) How come, that on some occations some mebers of the band (sometimes Ace, but also Paul or Gene) wore the costumes mixed up? For example the Alive! outfit with the 1974 boots, or Destroyer costume with the Alive! boots, or one member wearing the 1975 costume but the rest the Destroyer costumes. (see here: www.kissforum.de/phpbb2/album_showpage.php?pic_id=5878)

Sometimes parts of costumes were in repair and sometimes some members found a pair of boots more comfortable than others

4) How many copies of each costume were made?

Depending on how long the tour was 2 to 4 costumes were made for each member.

5) KISS shot a video for "I" at Studio 54 in New York. Bravo photographer Didi Zill was there to shoot photos and there was a big story in the magazine about it. How come the video has never been released? What happened to the footage that was shot there, who has it. What is the point to spend the money to shoot it and then never release it? There was even an audience there. Who were therse people? Any chance we will ever see it?

As far as I can remember it was shot in a commercial studio and not in Studio 54. The audience were some people we knew. But the video didn't turn out how we wanted it. It wasn't KISS enough in the presentation. It was all wrong and never used.

6) Do you know, when the footage from Coventry 1973 will be released? Do you have anything to say on when and how it will be released, or is it all up to Kiss? How is the footage like? A one camera shot from far back, or was there someone behind the camera filming using a zoom etc.? Is this the only old pre 1974 footage still existing or is there something else we don't know about yet?

The show of the Coventry will be out at the end of this year. I'm working together with the band now to get it released. We also have footage of rehearsals, an audio tape of the Daisy of an early '73 concert, footage of a gig in a club in Queens before the the first tour, a demo the band made for Neil Bogart. Lot's of great stuff.

7) What are you doing for a living these days?

I'm involved with some bands at the moment; Nothing Rhymes With Orange and Crossbreed.

8) Why have you never written a book about Kiss?

Maybe I will in the next 10 years, hah hah, and tell the real truth.

9) What do you think about ERIC SINGER and TOMMY THAYER wearing Peters and Aces make-up & costumes? A decission you would have chosen as well? Why was not ERIC CARR put in Peters make-up back then in 1980?

Eric and Tommy are real professionals and they look great. KISS is the four members with their image, the total package. It's what the band stands for and what the fans want. Eric had his own make up because Peter at that time owned his make up and outfits. Later Gene and Paul bought the rights back and that got the whole new Merchandise deals back on the market.

10) What do you think how KISS are managed by Gene these days? (No new album, no new costumes, no new effects, no new set-list, the same from year to year for about 7 years now). Looking at their career after you left what are some of the things you think you would have done a little different had you still been manageing them?

Gene sees KISS more as a brand nowadays so that's his goal. If you look at stuff like the coffee house you can see the music sometimes getting a backseat. But that's where Gene and Paul are at at the moment. Investments are focused at other things sometimes.

11) How much was ERIC CARRs salary in 1980?

100,000 $ A year and we also bought him a Porsche.

12) Why have KISS changed their Logo in 1980? Did you HAVE to change it because of the promoter, because of the record company, or because of the law? Do you have any idea why KISS used the original logo on tour in Germany again in 1997 and 1999?

We only changed the logo in Germany because of the SS insinuations, which are preposterous. KISS were fairly unknown in Europe at that time so we changed it for argument's sake. Later people realised that the logo had nothing to do with the SS and the second world war and it probably wasn't necessary to change it later.

13) Do you know, who has the rights for "KISS meets the Phantom of the park". Why has it not been released officially yet?

We tried to buy it back but we couldn't. It is available on DVD, though.

14) Do you know, why the 2 "S" in the KISS logo are slightly different?

The original concept was thought of by Ace and the difference was quite deliberate. Just to steer clear of the SS connection. Didn't always work, some people wanted to get at KISS and used the logo for cheap shots.

15) Do you know, why "Killers" has not been released in the USA, although it was released in most other countries. The same goes for the "Best of Solo" Albums. And how come "Killers" had the same cover worldwide, while the "Best of Solo" Album looked different in every country? When and in what way is each record comany in a country allowed to change the layout of the cover?

I wasn't involved wtih Killers, so I really wouldn't know. Concerning the Solo Albums we let the record companies decide what covers and pictures to use. They could do whatever they wanted.

16) There are official KISS playing cards from 1978 from "Gemaco". Do you know how rare they are, have they ever been officially relaesed, or are these proto types (they are black with a silver KISS logo on the back)?

They weren't prototypes, they were released in the Seventies.

17) There are photos from a lot of really cool proto types from KISS Merchandise from the 70's, I am sure you know these photos (Kiss camera, lighter etc.). How come these have never been released? What happened to these proto-types?

These prototypes were all things we tried out at the time and kept on hold. They were stored in a warehouse I rented, but at the moment of me stopping my professional relationship with KISS I kind of lost track of these items. I actually forgot to pay the rent of the warehouse because I didn't know I had it anymore. Kind of lost track of it at the moment. Then later these pictures kept popping up on the internet and I realised this was my stuff which I kept in the warehouse. Seeing the prices these things go stupid of me.

Thanks to Bill Aucoin and Alain Vansassenbroeck for making this interview possible.
