From: The News And Observer Ignore the foul language. Dismiss the sexist comments. Look beyond that "party everyday" front. You just might be able to see it. That GENE SIMMONS -- the tongue wagging co-founder of the '70s band KISS -- is a savvy, calculated businessman. Of course, it's not always easy to see, what with the "spread your legs" comments and commands to be quiet and let him do the talking. (The reason, he says, he won't ever get married: Because women can't just let him talk.) Get offended all you want. His long-running shtick has taken him from party-hard '70s rocker to successful marketer with more than 2,500 product licenses, a KISS Coffeehouse franchise concept, a reality TV show, a record company, book deals, several television commercials and even his own postage stamp. His latest venture, KISS fragrances for men and women, will bring him to Durham today. The fragrance -- one of hundreds launched this year into an already crowded perfume market -- isn't exactly what you might think. Instead of being obnoxious and overtly sexual, the KISS Her fragrance is lightly floral and sweet. KISS Him is boldly spicy with hints of exotic Asian notes. Simmons wasn't actually involved in the scent mixing process. He left that to his partners at Gemini Cosmetics. But he did have a final say, and it took three tries before he gave the fragrances final approval, he said. He doesn't actually wear the KISS cologne, either. But he does use the KISS All Nite deodorant, he said. His 14-year-old daughter Sophie, however, who is very particular about the fragrances she wears, wears it daily, he said. (You'll get to see it yourself, he said, in the 20 new episodes of "GENE SIMMONS Family Jewels," on A&E.) Durham is one of 11 cities on Simmons' promotion tour. He'll hit Myrtle Beach (home of the first KISS Coffeehouse) Saturday and then Fort Bragg on Monday. The choice of tour cities, of course, is as calculated as most everything else he does. New York, Los Angeles and Detroit were purposely not included among his stops, he said. "This is heartland stuff," he said. "We always believe in the notion that if something works in the heartland, it will work in New York or L.A." |
