Stripping all the legendary bombast away, what becomes starkly clear is that besides rocking relentlessly, the power of human emotion and conviction on Live to Win can rattle not only the walls, but also touch the heart and soul of the listener. What I wanted to do on this album was sing about my life because my life is not that different than anybody elses, he continues. The truth is, what we all deal with in life is pretty similar. You change the names and the storys the same. This album is purely a labor of love, says Stanley. It is a labor of passion, and something where I was concerned with turning out the album I heard in my head, without regard for having glitz and star power from other sources. It was purely about making the album I wanted to make. While the heartfelt Loving You Without You Now was written without any outside collaboration, the remainder of the album reunites him with former KISS songwriting partners Desmond Child [Aerosmith, LeeAnn Rimes] and Holly Knight [Tina Turner, Pat Benatar], and introduces new collaborators including Andreas Carlsson [Bon Jovi, Britney Spears], John 5 [Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson] and Marti Frederiksen [Aerosmith, Faith Hill]. Seven of the ten tracks were co-written with Child and/or Carlsson, with Stanley and Child joined by John 5 on Where Angels Dare and Frederiksen on Lift, and Knight teaming with the frontman on Its Not Me. Live to Win is self-produced by Stanley, who provides lead vocals, guitar and percussion alongside a studio core of guitarist Corky James [Avril Lavigne, The Matrix], drummer Victor Indrizzo [Beck, Macy Gray] and keyboardist Harry Sommerdahl [Carrie Underwood, Lindsay Lohan]. Also performing on the album are former KISS bandmate BRUCE KULICK and guitarist John 5. Ive always believed that when you give somebody an album, it should be like a fresh newspaper, where you get ink on your fingers and its todays news, says Stanley, who wrote and co-wrote the ten tracks on Live to Win specifically for the new release. For me, this album is where Im at now This is where things are in my life, and my perspective on my music. For more than thirty years, PAUL STANLEY has reigned supreme as one of the single-most recognizable frontmen in the history of rock and roll. Hes the principal songwriter, driving force and the unwavering voice of KISS, one of the most successful and influential bands ever born on American soil. Employing equal parts hip-grinding rhythm, full-tilt glam and guitar-driven slam, Stanley single-handedly penned such escapist anthems as Love Gun, God of Thunder and Black Diamond. He was the golden throat that throttled Detroit Rock City, the charismatic swagger behind I Was Made For Lovin You, and stripped of makeup, was the unmasked troubadour that breathed vocal life into the ballads Reason to Live, Forever and Every Time I Look At You. KISS has more gold records than any other American band in history and have sold more than 80 million albums worldwide. PAUL STANLEY was born Stanley Harvey Eisen, in New York on January 20, 1952. Hes the son of William and Eve Eisen. The family, including Pauls older sister, moved to Queens in the early 60s, where his father worked as a furniture salesman. Paul grew up in a house full of opera and classical music but it was when he heard Eddie Cochran and American Bandstand that music really started flowing in his veins. He first picked up a guitar at the age of 13. Paul attended the prestigious Manhattan High School of Music and Art. At the age of 15 Paul joined his first band, The Post-War Baby Boom. Art was another big influence on Paul; he attended Bronx Community College as an art major. Paul left school early to pursue rock and roll stardom. This is when friend and band mate Stephen Coronel introduced Paul to a bushy-haired, shaggy-bearded songwriter named Gene Klein. The two did not get along well due to their inflated egos. But they eventually got past that and formed a band originally called Rainbow, which morphed into Wicked Lester. Wicked Lester got picked up by Epic Records for a one-album deal in 1971, and cut a record but it never saw the light of day. Paul and Gene decided to disband Wicked Lester and form a new band. After seeing his ad in the Rolling Stone magazine, Paul and Gene added PETER CRISS to the lineup. After practicing for a month they put an ad in the Village Voice seeking a guitarist. After many auditions the band hired ACE FREHLEY, who made an impression due to his spaced out appearance, and KISS was born. The band then hired a small time television producer, Bill Aucoin, as their manager, who landed the band a recording contract with new label Casablanca within two weeks. The band toured extensively, gathering a big fan base, especially in Detroit. The band released three LPs within a year but it was their live fourth album, ALIVE! that put KISS on the map with their first big hit Rock and Roll All Nite. Throughout the 70s KISS was an unstoppable machine, with two huge selling Marvel comics, a network TV movie and four simultaneously released solo albums. KISS memorabilia is an industry within itself. Paul has also done some production work, his first in 1979. Yet due to his KISS schedule he has had to turn down many opportunities producing such acts as Ratt, Poison, Cher, and Warrant. He almost even became the producer for Guns n Roses Appetite for Destruction album, but he turned it down because he didnt relate to the band on a personal level. In the late 80s Paul started a management company called PAUL STANLEY Entertainment. In 1999 Paul played the lead role in the Toronto presentation of Phantom of the Opera. KISS continues to add to a stunning array of merchandise. Arriving in stores October 31 is KISSOLOGY Vol. 1 1974-1977, a two-disc DVD set. The first season DVD of the A&E series GENE SIMMONS Family Jewels is now out. They now have their own KISS Coffeehouse in Myrtle Beach, Florida, which offers a KISS line of coffees. They have their own line of KISS fragrances, and Gene and Paul have been making appearances at fragrance counters where the line is sold. |
