Rocking With KISS
From: The Press-Enterprise

Sammy Bubley is a sophomore at Hemet High School. He likes rock and roll music and has a group of friends that share his love of rock band KISS.

Five of the teens met band member GENE SIMMONS last month in Riverside. About 3,000 people swarmed the Gottschalks fragrance counter at Riverside Plaza when Simmons made an in-store appearance promoting his new men's cologne.

Rosie Bubley, Sammy's mother, drove five of the teens to Riverside and said she was impressed with the attention that Simmons paid them.

"It was such a great experience," she said.

While waiting in line for the 3-hour autograph session by their idol, the boys sang "Rock and Roll All Nite" -- probably the most recognized KISS song.

Cameramen for Simmons' reality show "Family Jewels" filmed the boys.

"We were the only people actually singing," said Sammy, 15.

"I love their music and their face paint," he said.

The hard-rocking band released its self-titled debuted LP on Feb. 8, 1974, and it quickly sold 75,000 copies.

Much of the material was written by Simmons and PAUL STANLEY, who are the only original members still in the group.

"ACE FREHLEY and PETER CRISS left the group in 1979 or 1980," said Sammy.

Corey McCoy, one of the other Hemet teens, said he likes the group because during a time when disco was popular KISS stood out among the others.

"In the 1970s they were the main rock band," said Corey, 16. His favorite KISS song -- and there have been many in the past 30 years -- is "Strutter."

"We are trying to learn about 20 songs so we can do a tribute concert," said Corey. "We hope to finish learning all the songs by the end of the school year and then practice all summer long."

Thomas Gates said Simmons is his favorite band member.

"I'm looking forward to bringing the rock and roll part of KISS to the people," said Thomas, 16. "We hope to have a big tribute show with pyrotechnics and everything."

He said the group has stayed focused on its goal and although he's not looking to make a career out of this, "if people offer to pay us to play I will."

Marlon Ramirez said it was cool dressing up as Simmons for Halloween and wearing his costume and make-up to school.

Bubley made the costumes for her son and his friends and remembers dropping them off at Hemet High that morning.

"All the other kids came running and asking them for autographs," she said. "It was awesome."

Bubley said she is the neighborhood mom that has all the band equipment at her house.

"I am so happy they have taken an interest in something so positive," she said. "And this group is from our era so parents can identify with it as well."

"We all rocked to KISS at one time or another," said Bubley.
