KISS-alikes Deuce Puttin' On The Glitz
From: Des Moines Register

The most elaborate rock show to take place this week in Des Moines began more than two years ago as a casual comment.

"Hey, let's dress up like KISS for Halloween," as guitarist Erich Tran remembers it.

"It really was just for fun," he explains.

And thus Des Moines KISS cover band Deuce was born at the House of Bricks - when the nightclub was still located on Merle Hay Road, not its current East Village digs.

"For our very first show we rented (costumes) from the Theatrical Shop (in Valley Junction)," said Joey Corigliano.

But something has happened since those humble beginnings: Deuce has become a more serious draw as well as serious fun for Tran, Corigliano, Josh Brainard, Jim Corigliano (Joey's brother) and Aaron Plaskas. A December 2005 gig at Keysters in Urbandale sold out. This year, radio station KGGO 94.9 FM came calling with an invite to perform at its suburban hockey/entertainment arena.

Deuce has responded with an even glitzier show.

"We built the 'Love Gun' stairs, the lighted stairs," Brainard said of Deuce's high-wattage production. "We want to make people feel like they're at a KISS show, not just sonically but with the look and the feel of it."

"It's kind of nice having a built-in audience that loves you immediately," said Tran, who like his band mates keeps busy writing and performing original music in a more serious, regular band.

Here's your guide to the five KISS fanatics in Deuce:

Josh Brainard (PAUL STANLEY), 32, Des Moines
Band resumé: On a Pale Horse, Problem Child (AC/DC covers), Audacious P, Slipknot, Vexx, Modifidious
First KISS memory: "KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park" (1978 TV movie)
Worst KISS album?: "Either PETER CRISS' solo album or 'Unmasked.' "
Costume: "Erich (Tran) and I actually built my costume a couple years ago. I can't seem to quit gluing rhinestones to it."

Jim Corigliano (GENE SIMMONS), 36, Des Moines
Band resumé: Odium, Heroic Dose, Smilin' Jack, Redwing
First KISS memory: "I just remember looking at GENE SIMMONS and going, 'I want to be him. That is too cool.' "
Best KISS album?: "Hotter Than Hell"
Costume: "I had to learn how to sew. It was just getting all the weird pieces ... all the metal pieces. Some of the weirdest stuff I found on the Internet and ... figured out how to put it together. ... Nice 7-inch-heel boots - those are fun to walk in. ... I make (fake blood) myself, about half a gallon at a time: red food coloring, Karo syrup. You actually water it down with regular water. That makes it really sticky, slimy, drippy - however your spit is, basically. Pretty gross."

Erich Tran (ACE FREHLEY), 31, Des Moines
Band resumé: Only, Wad, Desecration, occasional guitar for Cassandra Disease
Worst KISS album?: "Unmasked"
Costume: Paid nearly $500 for a professional Ace outfit from a company in Argentina. Takes him about an hour to apply makeup, another 15 minutes for his hair. "My wife always does my hair," he said.

Joey Corigliano (PETER CRISS), 39, Des Moines
Band resumé: Calous, D*mF*x, Godkillgod, Dementia, Smilin' Jack, Roze
First KISS memory: The "Destroyer" album, and he still has a VHS copy of "KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park" recorded from TV. "We got a picture of us (Joey and his brother, Jim) when we were kids dressing up as KISS for Halloween."
Worst KISS album?: "The Elder"
Costume: "Pretty much 'Love Gun,' with the bullet belt-type thing. ... I even got the pants with the three zippers on each leg. We spent hours glue-gunning these jewel things on our costumes."

Aaron Plaskas (ERIC CARR), 31, West Des Moines
Band resumé: Cassandra Disease, Winifred Trouble, Intaglieo
First KISS memory: "I walked through a Kmart (at age 4) with my mom, and the KISS "Alive II" album caught my eye, just the colors on it and the makeup. I just looked at my mom and demanded that and a Fisher Price record player. I think that record is still spinning on the same Fisher Price record player to this day."
Best KISS album?: "Hotter than Hell" (studio album), "Alive!" (overall)
Costume: "I wound up going from actually workin' on the production to playing in the middle of the set," said Plaskas, who emerges mid-set to perform as KISS' '80s replacement for Criss, now deceased.
