GENE SIMMONS: Comic Book Fanzine PublisherFrom: Doc Lehman Posted: October 25, 2008 Back in the 1960’s before KISS GENE SIMMONS was (and still is) a comic book and science fiction fan. In fact, he was so into the comic book and SF fandoms that as a young teenager he worked to earn money to purchase his own used mimeograph machine in order to begin producing his own fanzines. Not only did Simmons, who went by the name of Gene Klein after he and his mother emigrated to the USA in June 1958 at age eight (he was born Chaim Witz), produce his own amateur publications he also contributed to many others published by other enthusiasts. Born in 1949, Simmons got into comic books and monster and science fiction magazines upon arriving in the USA as it helped him learn the language. Among some of the fanzines Klein (Simmons) edited and published during the 1960’s were Sirruish, Id, Sci-Fi Showcase, Cosmos, Tinderbox, Adventure, Mantis, Faun and others. His most successful was Cosmos. Cosmos eventually merged with Stilletto fanzine becoming Cosmos-Stilletto with issue #7 and then with issue #13 he changed the title to Faun. In addition to writing and drawing for his own fanzines, Klein (Simmons) also contributed articles and artwork for a variety of other fanzines including such titles as Bombshell (he had a regular column called ‘Hokum’), Comic Comments, Gore Creature, Dynatron, Ecco, Comic Feature, Splash Page, Men of Mystery, Spectre, Fantasy News, Exile, Iscariot, Ragnarok (I used to order that one!), Ray Gun, RBCC (another favorite of mine), Sanctum, Pulp Era, Web Spinner, One Step Beyond and a number of others. I have been a KISS man since 1973 and like many others have rooms dedicated to the Greatest Band on earth. Have and will alway's admire the way they have conquered the world with great music, bombastic stage shows and a real desire to entertain everyone who attends their concerts. I have briefly met all 4 members over the years and found them to be down to earth and willing to talk.. Gene has that certain amount of arrogance which is what I love about him...he is the man, Paul just so much to admire a true Rock Star, love your paintings!! Eric and Tommy great at what you do and we are all thankful that you have helped make this band what it is. Can't wait for your next trip Down Under!!!

Ace Appears On Eddie Trunk's New Show And Will Appear At Chiller ExpoFrom: EddieTrunk.com Posted: October 23, 2008 I have been totally slammed running in and out of NYC and working on the new VH1 Classic show. I am thrilled to report that Season 1 is done! We wrapped production last night, followed by a fun wrap party after with all the cast and crew at an Irish pub...Yesterday's final two shows featured ACE FREHLEY and Alex and Geddy from Rush as in studio guests. What a way to wrap up Season 1! I can not thank Alex and Geddy enough. The guys flew to NYC in and out on the same day just to do my show only. It's an honor to be able to call the Rush guys friends over the last few years and I am so grateful. To have artists of this caliber willing to step up for me like this is unreal. We had some fun with the guys and talked about their new DVD. They both were enteraining and very funny and seemed to have a good time. Was also cool to see Ace and Rush interact backstage. Rush opened more shows for KISS then any band in the 70's and the stories and old memories were flowing in the halls and around the makeup room. Was just great to watch these legends interact and catch up. Ace was typical Ace, cracking jokes and being very loose and having fun. He told me he thought the format of the show was great and was really enjoying it. Yes he is still working on the CD, and I promised him I would make it to his house next week to hear where he's at with it. We will also both be appearing at the Chiller Expo in Parsippany NJ Saturday 10/25. "You know what? Hold on a second," he says into the phone, cutting into the conversation mid-sentence. There are some muffled sounds, the close of a heavy door, and then he’s back on the line. "The housekeeping people here have a very interesting thing they do," he explains, half-amused. "At some point, if you have the ‘Do not disturb’ on the door, they turn it around so it says, ‘Make up the room’ and then knock on the door." The tactic didn’t work: "I’m still not dressed, actually. I just decided to stay in my room today and catch up. I’m kicking back." With good reason. On his 30-shows-in-seven-weeks European tour celebrating KISS’s 35th anniversary, the singer-songwriter and guitarist has been rocking—hard. "It’s been pretty crazy," he boasts. "You can’t beat 55,000 people screaming your name. The demand has been huge and the crowds have been rabid." For Stanley, performing KISS’s grueling lineup and stage act night after night is revitalizing: "There are two or three hours a day that are euphoric, and 21 or so that are necessary." In fact, to hear him tell it, the physical challenge of touring is part of the glory—a small price to pay for staying on top of the world. "I train like any athlete," he says. "There isn’t time to find out you haven’t trained long enough once you get in the ring, so I’m very dedicated to making sure that not only am I physically and mentally capable of doing the show, but that the fans get at least what they expect if not more. Rockstar's Dinner With PAUL STANLEYFrom: Kris Kancler Posted: October 20, 2008 It all started when the management from the beautiful Wentworth gallery decided that their biggest connoisseurs of PAUL STANLEY paintings should be rewarded with an exclusive "invitation only" private dinner party with the artist himself. Since my brother already has the largest and most extensive PAUL STANLEY guitar collection known to man, it was a no brainer that he would also strive for eventually owning the largest PAUL STANLEY art collection as well. That's how he rolls - over the top with everything he does! Together, we have collected 14 art pieces and feel very fortunate that we are able to enjoy these in our home on a daily basis. Marc and I, I mean, Rock and I decided to fly into Washington D.C. the night before the event to catch up on some much needed shopping in the area. By doing this, we were also ensuring that we would not be late for the dinner party with Paul to be held the next day. Anyone that knows Rock knows he is always late. After all, he is a Rock Star. The gallery was located in an upscale shopping center that is adjacent to the Ritz, our hotel, so we had plenty of access to all the shopping that we could want on a Friday night. The next day was the big event. Before the dinner, we attended a gallery VIP party at noon. This was held exclusively for people who purchase PAUL STANLEY's art and is great because it allows those who have purchased Paul's art the chance to meet him and have the artwork singed personally by him. Rock and I have followed him around the country to attend these shows, with this being our 6th, just to get a chance to share with him how wonderful and significant his artwork is to us. We go not only because we are huge fans of his accomplishments throughout his career, but because we truly appreciate what he is able to do with a blank canvas every time his brush touches it. The People's Choice Awards has their Crystal Award...and MTV Latin America has...my tongue. It was a hoot seeing the various artists receiving my tongue (...). Metallica played and were in great form. Jared Leto and his Mars guys sat nearby (You're welcome, Jared!!!).

An Evening With PAUL STANLEYFrom: PaulStanley.com Posted: October 13, 2008 Following Saturday afternoon's gallery show, Wentworth Galleries held an exclusive "invitation only" private dinner and evening with PAUL STANLEY at the Ritz Carlton in McLean, VA. 30 art collectors from around the country feasted on a multi course dinner of filet mignon and roasted sea bass while surrounded by new art works including abstracts and portraits. Each course of the dinner featured a star shaped food item beginning with star crab cakes and concluding with assorted star shaped pastries and chocolates. Paul, along with TOMMY THAYER ate each course at different tables, spending quality, one on one time with all guests. Everyone who attended agreed the highlight of the six hour party was an unannounced surprise of Paul and Tommy performing an acoustic set of KISS and Beatles classics! [more] 
Paul DC Wentworth Gallery AppearanceFrom: Derek Pittman Posted: October 13, 2008 Paul’s second visit to the DC area Wentworth Gallery was one not to be missed and provided a great experience by meeting Paul. I’d noticed in an earlier story on KISS Asylum that the gallery would be having a VIP reception prior to opening for the masses. I made a call and found out that one hour prior to the general public coming in there would be an opportunity to be a part of a private champagne reception and meet and greet with Paul. The catch? You must purchase a piece of art. I then was told that I could book an appointment prior to the reception to have a gallery member show and talk about the works in depth that may help in the decision making process. The last thing I was told was that during his last appearance the line stretched through the mall and that you would only have about 5 minutes during the public appearance to make your way through the gallery and get a glimpse of Paul. With that said I booked an appointment. We arrived at 10:15, gave our names at the door and promptly met with our staff member. We had done a little previewing of his works and knew the ones we were interested in. After seeing the works in person, and the website doesn’t do all the pieces justice, we decided on the one we wanted. While some of the originals were pushing $70,000, many can be had for under $2,000. We completed our paperwork from our purchase and took a little extra time examining the other displayed pieces. The venue for his upcoming show: the Wentworth Gallery at Tysons Galleria, where Stanley will appear with a collection of his acrylic paintings on Saturday, Oct. 11, 12 noon-3 p.m. Like his band, Stanley’s largely abstract art is big and bold, with bright colors on large canvases. "I love art that’s vibrant and has a lot of color," Stanley said. "I think life is vibrant. On its worst day, life’s always a miracle." This is why, no matter his mood, his palette is never somber, he said. "In a warped way, depression is as vibrant as anything else." Stanley said he was interested in art from a young age, and he graduated from the High School of Music and Art in Manhattan. "I was originally, according to a lot of people, a young talented artist," he said. However, he added, "I found I wasn’t fond of people telling me what to do or how to do it." His appearance was scheduled just hours before his concert with Alice Cooper at the Oshawa, General Motors Centre. I've had the good fortune to meet Eric a number at times at various KISS related events and he's always been excellent with me and the other fans. Just this past week-end my baby girl, Lola Grace celebrated her first birthday. I took her to Oshawa today to try to meet Eric & Alice Cooper at the sound check, with the later meet and greet with Eric as my backup plan. It was a good thing as there ended up being no afternoon sound check for the show; but Eric still made the trip from Toronto to meet near 100 fans at the music store. Eric didn't disappoint and I witnessed him spending more time with each fan, then ever I have witnessed. Straight up, in my opinion, when it comes to a fan encounter with a KISS member; Eric is tops. We showed up early and had a good chance to talk with the other fans. It was your normal KISS gathering: some good fans, some bad, some really over the moon! Eric treated each one well and was more then generous in signing memorabilia for the fans. [more]

For the past year, Stanley has been touring his original artwork and will open a new exhibit this Saturday at a Washington, DC area gallery. "It’s been terrifically successful," Stanley tells Rolling Stone. "And the great thing is I never expected it. I paint for myself. If no one else likes it at least I do. I have never approached things to please other people in both art and music." No stranger to art, Stanley studied at New York’s High School of Art and Music, the inspiration for the film Fame. "My best subject must have been lunch," he says. "I didn’t get along with authority and it turned me off art." Failing art class, he dropped painting for music. Years later, while going through a painful divorce in 2000, Stanley found solace in painting and picked up his brushes again. So I called my girl SOFIA which is SOPHIE in Spanish. Two year later, I had a Boy. Gene had a boy named NICHOLAS, so I named my son NICOLAS which is NICHOLAS in Spanish. I wanted to have a SOFIA and NICOLAS just like Gene has. I also have a beautiful wife named ADRIANA and after 14 years I'm still crazy about her. We watch the TV series "GENE SIMMONS Family Jewels" and when Gene's family appears I tell my kids "Look! Those are Gene's kids and you’re named after them". They love to see them.
