Psycho Circus "Bonus" Video/CD?
From: Polygram Canada via Dale Warner
Just some info about the commercial video for PSYCHO CIRCUS (the song not the album). It should be available with a bonus CD of the unreleased song "IN YOUR FACE". Here are some details that I have: The video/cd will be released with 4 color packaging only. The video tape will have both a one dimensional and 3-D version of the video, and 3-D glasses will be included in the packaging. Apparently there are 2 versions of this.
KISS Press Conference Rescheduled?
From: Peter Arquette
The extravagant Times Square Press Conference had been changed to September 17th and will now be in held in Radio City Music Hall. It appears the city office had been receiving so many phone calls from KISS fans inquiring information on the event that the Mayor became alarmed and would not give KISS permission to use Times Square for fear of traffic problems. Interestingly enough, Los Angeles is still being looked at as an alternate site.
KA Note: This is not yet "officially confirmed" but we have heard this information from a number of informed sources ourselves.

FMQB: KISS Psycho Circus
From: FMQB
Paul. Gene. Ace. Peter. Together again, for the first album of all-new material since 1979's Dynasty!!! To put things into perspective, in 1979, Jimmy Carter was in office, 8-tracks and Atari 2600's were top of the line, and America's conscience was split between the hostage crisis and the energy crisis. Times have changed since then, and
so did KISS, but judging from the title track from their new album, Psycho Circus, the more things change, the more they stay the same. The arena-ready "Psycho Circus" proves that their reunion tour last year was no fluke. Increased production values aside, "Circus" could've been on any of their earlier albums. KISS have always believed in "bigger is better," so when they launch their tour this Halloween, none other than SMASHING PUMPKINS will open, and the stage design will be 3D. With lines about amplifiers starting to hum and Paul Stanley singing about the
makeup running down his face, you can tell that "Psycho Circus" was designed to be played live. Until they hit your town, you can start by welcoming your listeners to the show with this excellent tune.
Psycho Circus: FMQB Premier Picks
From: FMQB
Psycho Circus was listed in the FMQB "Premier Picks" section. Here is what they said. "The release of KISS' Psycho Circus album marks the first time in over twenty years that original members Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss have recorded together. And true to KISS form, the band has re-invented themselves all over again. The album's first single, "Psycho Circus," is so obvious that you quite simply should turn in your headphones if you can't hear it. And get set for a November tour where concert-goers will receive 3-D glasses so they can view a special screen that will display all of KISS' stage antics in 3-D. (Gene's tongue in 3-D would even make Monica Lewinsky jealous.) Early "Psycho Circus" spinners include WRCX, Q107, KCAL, KTXQ, and WRCQ."

"Whether you love us of hate us," says Paul Stanley, "there's more than enough there to keep your feelings the same."

Gene Simmons Throws Birthday Bash
From: Muzic.com via Steve Araki
Kiss's resident fire-breather, Gene Simmons, celebrated his 49th birthday Saturday with 200 of his nearest and dearest at a Beverly Hills strip club called the Beverly Club -- and according to party-goers, it was a rather subdued affair, considering the more raucous soirees Simmon's has held in the past. Faxed invitations went out last week, instructing invitees to either "dress up or dress down," and not to come bearing gifts, but rather to make a donation to the Pediatric AIDS foundation in Los Angeles. We always knew Simmons had a heart under that rubber suit.
While there were the requisite scantily clad dancers, there was no real nudity, and only one rather buxom lass doffed her top in a moment of heated abandon. But then, it was rather a family affair, with Shannon Tweed, the mother of Simmons's two children and his companion of the last 14 years holding court. Tweed, who makes her living as the queen of racy horror movies, served time at the Playboy Mansion, and invited her former employer, Hugh Hefner -- who showed up early and stayed late, with an entourage of six stunning blondes. Looking equally stunning according to witnesses, was Simmons's bandmate Paul Stanley, who was sporting a much more luxurious head of hair than in recent months (whispers abound that he has been making frequent visits to Dr. Bosely, infomercial king and designated hair-plugger to the stars), and who seems to have reconciled with his wife, Pam -- until recently, the musician had been staying at Simmons's guest house.
Also in evidence were Ace Frehley and Peter Criss, who came with dates but thankfully without make-up (okay, Ace had a little foundation on). Even Kiss's manager Doc McGee turned out for the event, as well as long-time Kiss producer Bob Ezrin, who left the party early to catch a plane to London, to finish the last dregs of the Kula Shaker album. Tom Arnold kept to himself and puffed a cigar all night, but some insist that he was the one who defaced the baby picture of Simmons in the vestibule, with a huge Paul Stanley star over the right eye -- which Simmons laughed a little too loudly at. And that was before the two cakes were wheeled out. Marilyn Manson's
Twiggy Ramirez showed up in rather understated attire, and without a date, but with new Manson recruit John Lowry -- who regaled everyone with funny Rob Halford jokes -- in tow. -Jaan Uhelszki, Muzic News

New KISS Merchandise Report

Kiss Plans Tour Spectacle
From: MTV News
The Kiss tour is shaping up to be one of the most extravagant road shows on the circuit in recent memory, according to sources close to the band. "Performance" magazine's Jane Cohen tells us that Kiss will be kicking off a 200-odd-date world tour to support their new album, "Psycho Circus," on or around November 20, at least initially staged in arenas. One appearance apparently already in place is a Kiss show New Years Eve at the Pontiac Silverdome, according to a report in the "Detroit News."
As previously reported by MTV News, the Kiss camp will be mounting a special show at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles October 31. There's been a flurry of rumours saying that the Smashing Pumpkins will peform at the show as well, but when reached by MTV News, representatives for the Pumpkins said they would not comment on that event. Fans can expect the usual Kiss flash and then some when they play live. Audience members will be issued 3D glasses to view jumbo screens with 3D effects and other visuals. The shows will contain circus performances and related props and costumes, the latter updated versions of their "Destroyer" outfits.
The previous Kiss tour, which first reunited Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley with original members Peter Criss and Ace Frehley, was listed by "Performance" as the top grossing tour of 1996. This tour may prove to be successful as well. "People go see Kiss for their theatrics, their extravagant production values and to hear their hits," notes "Performance's" Cohen. "If [Kiss is] providing all that, it shouldn't matter if the record sells or not."
The album "Psycho Circus," produced by rock veteran Bruce Fairbairn, is due September 22 with packaging as extravagant as their staging. The front of the CD and the inside CD tray will feature "multi-image lenticular packaging" creating a 3D effect. Limited edition vinyl albums will be available, also with multi-image 3D-effect cover art. All discs will be software-enhanced CDs featuring a Kiss Screen Saver and a special message from the group.

"In Your Face" News
From: Mercury Canada via Dale Warner
This is a response I got back from Mercury Canada. As it states in the reply, Canada won't be getting the extra Psycho Circus track, "In You Face" either.
Mercury: You are correct. It's a Gene written song called "In Your Face", and is planned for the Japanese release only. This song is going to be available on a Video single with a bonus CD. The CD will also have an interactive program. It will of course, come in four versions representing each on of the band.
Peter Criss News
From: Steve Corral
I wrote in a few weeks ago with a newsbit regarding Peter Criss' upcoming interview with "Drum!" magazine. Though the interview had been completed for some time, being that the album wasn't coming out until September "Drum!" waited to publish the interview. The issue will have a small inset picture of Peter Criss from a past tour on the cover in which the interview is featured. I also hear that there will be a Peter Criss cover story in "Modern Drummer" magazine in the near future.
KISS Movie News & Rumor
From: Muzic.com via Glenn
Klassic KISS Line-Up On New Album A Kon?
According to sources at New Line Cinema, the cast of Kiss's new Detroit Rock City movie is close to being confirmed. So far, two of the four lead characters have been named; one is Edward Furlong, who rose to fame after his starring role in Terminator II, while newcomer Natasha Lyonne -- currently making waves as an over-developed teenager in Slums of Beverly Hills, will play Christine 16.
The coming-of-age comedy set in 1978 centers around four teenagers who go to
great lengths to obtain entrance into a sold-out KISS concert, a premise that sounds vaguely familiar (anybody remember Thank God It's Friday, that little disco flick featuring a pre-Berlin Terri Nunn, who would stop at nothing to score tickets to a KISS concert in 1978? -- ahh, whatever). Also featured in the Adam Rifkin-directed film are the Creatures of the Night -- Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss -- who appear in the film playing themselves. Production is scheduled to begin this fall in the Motor City, but isn't expected to hit theaters until in the Spring of 1999.
Although the veteran rockers play themselves in Detroit Rock City, some Net gossipers are saying the band doesn't hardly play at all on the forthcoming Psycho Circus, the soon-to-be-released KISS album. Many unnamed sources even go so far as to claim that Simmons and Stanley only supplied vocal tracks, whereas Frehley and Criss play their instruments (guitar and drums) on a track here and there. Some names being bandied about of those who actually played instruments on Psycho Circus are drummer Kevin Valentine, former KISS bassist Bruce Kulick and guitarist Tommy Thayer (who, by the way, made an impressive Ace clone when he played in Cold Gin, an all-KISS cover band). The band's spokesperson at Mercury Records staunchly denies the allegations, saying that only two outside players were added on a few keyboard tracks.
Regardless of who actually played each note on the album, the early buzz says Psycho Circus is nevertheless a solidly good KISS album. At a unofficial listening party in Hollywood, one longtime fan said, "the guitar playing doesn't sound much like Ace, and I'd be hard-pressed to believe that it's Peter playing drums, but who cares, the songs are good and it rocks!" Decide for yourself when the album comes out on September 22. -Jennifer Schwartz

KISS In Guitar World Magazine
From: Guitar World Magazine via Richard Mochnaczewski
Here's some info and choice quotes from the interview :
Guitar World Interviewer : "How does life on the road in the Nineties differ from the way life on the road was back in the Seventies?"
Simmons: "Not at all. I fuck my brains out. I fuck everything that moves. And
if it doesn't move, we work something out."
About the tour :
Simmons : "We're gonna do the first 3D live tour ever. The first one is gonna be at Dodger Stadium in LA on Halloween. But in every city on the tour, you're gonna enter the arena or stadium where we're playing and get a pair of 3D shades. You put 'em on and we're gonna fuckin' take you a-w-a-y. Like nothing you've seen or heard before. It' gonna be ineractive. You're gonna be able to point and things are gonna pop. There'll be things over your head, there'll be things under your seat. You won't know where it's all gonna, what it's gonna be."
GW : "What is this costing you guys?"
Simmons : "Millions. But we're rich ! We've been rich a long time. I'm not saying this to be arrogant, but because I'm blessed. We are all priveileged and this is the least we can do for our fans. If you have enough money to throw a good party, why not throw the biggest party anyone has seen? Costs millions? So what. We got millions. The CD itself is a 3D CD, too. Every page of the booklet is gonna have some holographic 3D effet. When you take the CD and put it into your computer, you get instant access to our website. No having to wait and type "com this, dot com taht." I hate that. I wanna find the guy who invented words like "font" and "mouse". We have to find this prick so that I can beat the shit out of him."
GW : "Do you see any parallels between Kiss and the Spcie Girls?"
Stanley : Only that i'd like to fuck them all. Hey, Baby Spice,Scary Spice, Posh Spice,Sporty Spice - jump on in Old Spice!"
Simmons : "I want it all. I want Kiss Cola. I want my own country. The country of Kiss. I want my own religion : Kisstianity ! I like the sound of that. Hey what's Christ got that I haven't gone?"
The rest of the article mentions that the idea for the 3D tour came from Doc Mcghee their manager, the move starts filming in October directed by Adam Rifkin, who's a major Kiss fan. They talk about the New York Dolls and their influence. There is also an add for Paul Stanley's new Washburn guitar and a contest to win a Marshall 2100SL-X AMP and Aces' Signature guitar.
KISS In Guitar World Magazine
From: Guitar World Magazine via Richard Mochnaczewski
Here is some other interesting notes I forgot to mention :
Paul and Ace divided up the solo work. Paul solos on Psycho Circus, Raise Your Glasses and one or two others. Paul helped Ace with Into the Void. Ace presented it to the band, but Gene wasn't crazy about it because the riff didn't grab him."I really had to fight to get that song on the record.Paul helped me rearrange it a little, to open up the choruses. It was his idea to hit a droning chord and then come in with that rhythm part later on. Whereas, originally, I was just repeating the rhythm part. He didn't want any writer's credit for it, but he probably deserves 5 or 10 percent." Gene mentions that he actually came up with Within during the COS sessions. You wanted the Best started out as a chorus idea in 1977, in Madison Wisconsin. It was originally called "Just Give Me Love" and was about life on the road: "You give me this, you give me that. That's not what I want. Just Give Me Love". Paul talks about Holly Knight and how they go back 20 years. She helped fine tune the melodies to I Pledge Allegiance and they did the lyrics to Raise Your Glasses.

Gene Simmons Q&A
From: Ben Knutson
Here is the Gene Simmons Q&A that was in the McFarlane Toys Newsletter.
Q: what do you think of the new figures?
A: KISS has always been about pushing the limits and we share a fanboy love
of all things "cool" with Todd. The KISS: Psycho Circus action figures are
the extension of that cool.
Q: What's your favorite figure?
A: Does Ego figure into this one? Does me count?
Q: Many of our figures are purchased by collectors. Do you collect anything?
A: I collect KISS. I probably have the largest collection in the world. This
includes one-of-a-kind fan made Kiss stuff. All of which will see the light
of day in Toy, Games & Girls collector's Bible, our fourcoming book.
Q: When does the Psycho Circus album come out?
A: KISS: Psycho Circus hits the streets September 14th [now scheduled for 9/22].
Q: When does the tour start?

Wall of Sound.com Best 70's Album Survey
From: John O'Hare
The website http://www.wallofsound.com (affiliated with ABC News.com) is
currently doing a survey to determine the best albums of the 70's. Kiss Destroyer is one of the albums that you can vote on, however it doesn't seem to be getting many votes. I voted for it and also 'wrote in' a vote for Kiss Alive. Maybe if you post information and a link to the survey on Kiss Asylum we can make a difference and vote Destroyer the best album of the 70's! Also, they are asking people to vote for 10
albums, however you don't have to pick all 10 so don't give other albums votes just to round out your list unless you really think they deserve to be up there with Kiss.

Eric Singer News
From: Jason Houston
Gerri Miller from Metal Edge E-mailed me just today saying that Eric Singer plays and sings backup on Gilby Clarke's next solo CD which will be released on September 29th and that there's a photo of Eric & the rest of the ESP band in the Dec. issue of Metal Edge (out in newsstands in September). I'm told that more coverage of The Eric Singer Project will follow in Metal Edge as the release of the ESP CD gets closer.
Message From UNION
From: Bruce Kulick
Bruce gave UNION Asylum a call tonight to ask us to pass on the following message. The guys are all preparing to head out on the road for the second leg of the UNION Tour '98 (first show this Thursday) so they will be away from their computers for a while. They aren't sure when or if they will be able to get to their email while on the road, so please be patient if you email Bruce, John, or Brent during the time UNION is on the road. But in the meantime you can see them in person if they are hitting a city near you, so be sure to check the UNION Asylum Tour Dates page for the most up-to-date tour schedule.

KISS Sighting
From: Daniel Johnson
Just got back from the Spice Girls show at the Forum, scored a killer floor seat. Who sits next me? Gene Simmons, Shannon Tweed, their 2 kids, and Paul Stanley and his wife. All these people (mostly little kids) were getting their ticket stubs signed. I still had the KISS Forum 96 stubs in my wallet so I got those signed. I said to Paul that they already did a greatest hits tour last time and it would be cool to hear some different stuff. He said they were rehearsing different songs, the only title he mentioned was "Love 'Em And Leave 'Em" When I asked who else besides Ted Nugent is opening at Dodger Stadium, he said Ted Nugent ISNT playing, he said there is a big band opening but couldnt say who it is.

Psycho Circus Album News
From: SpaceAce
I just got back from Polygram to pick up my advance copy of Psycho Circus. First the bad news for all the US fans. The US edition is the only edition which will not have the bonus track. The songs is titled "In Your Face" and credited to Gene. But as I only got the lyrics and I haven't heard it I think it's sung by Ace.I've also got the full credits of the album:
Produced by Bruce Fairbairn
Recording engineer Mike Plotnikoff
Mixed by Mick Guzauski
Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound New York
Recorded January - April 98 at One On One Studios and A&M Studios
A&M Studios
Assistant Engineer Quentin Dunn
Special thanks to Ron Rutledge
One On One Studios
Assistant Engineer Scott Camarota
Second Engineer Jason Mauva
Special thanks to Nikki Freeman
Music preparation for "Journey" and "Found my way" by Tom Halen
Strings on those 2 tracks arranged and conducted by Shelly Berg
Acoustic piano on those 2 tracks also by her
Fender Rhodes on "Found my way" by Bob Ezrin
When I picked up the cd they asked my if I had some extra time to listen to the album on their system because they wanted to have my opinion. First of all I wanna say that the album sounds completly different than the MP3 tracks floating around. It sounds much wider and also a bit faster and you notice alot of things in the sound. For example that the PC guitar solo returns at the end of Journey of a 1000 years... and other stuff.
The Cover. It looks a bit like the hype sheet. Meaning you have the curtain but without the clown or Kiss pictures. And exactly in the center you have the Kiss logo. And as a halve circle above the logo you have the words Psycho Circus. Very plain and simple. Then they showed my their 2 official promo pictures.
And here come's some special news for the musician's (especially Bassplayers) among us. The first shot is a full body shot without instruments. The other shot is something else! It is also a full body shot with a lightblue background and you have from left to right Gene Simmons with his axe bass.! As far as I could see it on the slide it was a new model because his signature is prominently displayed onto the neck. So maybe he has retired his Punisher? Peter Criss looking kinda naked as he is holding nothing. Not even drumsticks. Ace Frehley with his signature model and Paul Stanley with his new Washburn signature model and holding it in such way that you just see a part of Ace's guitar and just his full face and feet.

KISS Has Big Plans For Detroit
From: Mkissed@aol.com
By Lisa Jackson -- The Detroit News
Gene Simmons of Kiss promises that Motown will live up to the title of " Detroit Rock City" this fall with a barrage of band-related events, including a new movie and a local concert. In October, Simmons says, New Line Cinema will begin shooting Detroit Rock City, a rite of passage film about some teens whose lives are portrayed against a local Kiss show. The movie is expected to be released within a year. "If I may use cliche, we've only just begun-- there is so much Kiss stuff that will be unleashed to the public," Simmons says, speaking by phone from his home in Los Angeles. Some footage for Detroit Rock City may be shot in town, Simmons says, including "concert stuff shots and things." Simmons will produce the movie, supervising decisions about casting, location and scripts. In other news, Simmons says he and bandmates Paul Stanley, Peter Criss and Ace Frehley will perform at the Pontiac Silverdome on Dec. 31. "The show will be a spectacle, but I won't say and more," Simmons says. " You'll have to see. We're going to blow all these bands away-- these bands who go onstage in sweat T-shirts." Tickets will likely go on sale Oct. 31. the same day the band kicks off a world tour at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The tour will support Kiss' new album Psycho Circus, which hits stores Sept. 22. "I'm really proud of this record," Simmons say, "Publicly we're arrogant--but we know we are damned lucky to do what we do."

Karl Cochran News
From: Dwane Rook
Sad news Friday from New Jersey. Karl Cochran who wrote INTO THE VOID with Ace Frehley on Psycho Circus and was Ace Frehley's right hand man and bass player since 1994, was seriously injured while playing a gig in New Jersey last Saturday. Karl has been playing this club for 5 years on and off, and both he and his drummer Carlos, were whacked by the bouncers in the middle of the set. "Unfucking believable," says Karl. "I have never been treated with so much disrespect, never have I had to put up with so much bull. Those bouncers needed to chill out, now I'm having problems with my hand and problems moving on stage. I got some serious injuries, someone has got to pay." (apparently there was a misunderstanding between the drummer and a bouncer and Karl was injured in the process).
Karl has just finished recording a new album called ESP which stands for the Eric Singer Project. The album which features ten cover songs, also features, Bruce Kulick and John Corabi. "Bruce was very cool about it and we shared the workload," reports Karl. "John is always great and Eric and I have been friends for years. Eric and I played with Ace in NAMM earlier this year. We recorded a KISS song for this album too, its called GOIN BLIND and I do lead vocals on it. I think its better than Strange Ways and Love Her All I Can (those two songs were recorded for the Return of the Comet album, last year.)
Here are 8 of the songs listing of the ESP album: Goin Blind, Foxy Lady, Changes, Four Day Creep, Set Me Free, Free Ride, Teenage Nervous Breakdown, Never Before. The album has not been mastered yet, and there is no definitive release date. Eric Singer is currently on tour with Alice Cooper and is considering another tour with another noted musician later this year. Karl's plans are on hold until his injuries can be accessed.

Mego Museum Features KISS '78 Dolls
From: Scott Carroll
Written by: Michael Rogers
"KISS! THAT'S THEIR NAME! KISS! THEY MIGHT BE INSANE! KISS! IF ROCK'S YOUR GAME. IT'S KISS!"
Probably the best (not!) Mego commercial jingle since Action Jackson launched the 1970's fab four into vinyl and plastic that has Mego collectors and KISS Kollectors parting with lots and lots of green pictures of dead Presidents. Getting a MIB set of KISS figures today is almost as difficult as an up and coming toy company securing a license of a Rock and Roll Phenomena. In 1977, KISS was, in many respects, the most popular band in America (and other countries too, most notably, Japan) and their albums were shipping Platinum (that's over a million copies sent to stores as it debuts, no easy feat). It was a year after a collaboration with Marvel Comics produced a KISS comic book that was Marvel's best seller ever(it remained so until sometime in the eighties) and there live concerts were selling out all over the place.
The music world was hot for this Rock and Roll foursome of fantasy characters which were: Gene Simmons, the tongue flickering bat/demon/monster Paul Stanley, the Lover or the "Star Child" Ace Frehley, the Space Man or the "Space Ace" Peter Criss, the Cat.
The KISS license was a real coup for Mego and they probably paid through the nose for it. The high cost of the license probably made them want to cut corners on the actual figures. In recalling the development phase of the dolls, Gene Simmons told about how Mego really didn't want to do his figure with his trademark tongue sticking out. KISS had likeness approval on these figures so Gene was able to insist on it. Gene thought the tongue objection was due to the sexual connotations of sticking the tongue out. But the first prototypes provided more insight into Mego's thinking.
According to Gene, the prototypes all had the same heads EXCEPT for Gene, which had a sculpt with the tongue out. It was then Gene realized that out of economy, Mego wanted to use the same head for all four members and paint them accordingly. He believes the tongue objection came out of this. KISS vetoed the all for one head and sent Mego back to the drawing board. Mego came up with individual heads for each member that got approved.
