Click to enlarge GENE SIMMONS's Zipper #1
From: GENE SIMMONS.com

Created by GENE SIMMONS
Written by Tom Waltz
Pencils by Casey Maloney
Inks by Stacie Ponder
Colors by Dusty Yee
Letters by Neil Uyetake
Published by IDW, 24 pages for $3.99

Zipper is the story of alien denizen Xeng Ral, a creature born to a world of collective-consciousness thinking who longs for individuality. The story opens as Xeng is being brought to trial for thinking of himself as "one" rather than as a mere member of the collective. It then explodes into action non-stop alien-in-leather action of the very coolest variety.

This book is the latest comic brainchild from legendary KISS front man GENE SIMMONS. I say latest because KISS is a band who’ve been in and out of comics for pretty much as long as I can remember and who lately seem to be enjoying some kind of comic renaissance. However, the grunt-work of making this book was done by Tom Waltz and Casey Maloney, the creative team that brought you last year’s critically acclaimed OGN Children of the Grave. As with that book, this one opens very well. Writing first issues is tough, but Waltz has chosen a starting point that drops us right into the action from the, well, from the second page onward. That makes this book a fun ride from start to finish. It’s efficient and effective writing. This first issue raises a number of interesting story questions and then provides exactly enough payoff to show that, yes, the story is indeed going to go somewhere.

Classic rock band KISS has licensed its name for everything from condoms to coffins. Now the face-painted rock band is trying out to a young generation of aspiring glam-rockers.

They were in New York City last week to help Hasbro launch a $69 Power Tour electric guitar for young kids and are in talks with Hasbro's Tiger Electronics for a Kiss-branded version. Also under discussion: a KISS version of the Tiger's i-Dog dancing speakers for iPods..

"There's no limit to what we can do — but you also don't want to flood the marketplace," KISS frontman GENE SIMMONS says..

Click to enlarge KISSology 2 Award And Volume III Sneak Peak
From: KISSOnline

Yesterday, thanks to Alex and Roger Coletti (KISSology producers), I was able to drop by the Doc McGhee offices and get a sneak peek at KISSology 3 footage and do a special award presentation (on behalf of Fontana distribution) for KISSology 2.

Gene and Paul were slated to arrive at any given moment, but Alex and Roger had already cued up footage of Volume 3 for the commentary session they were about to do with the band. BRUCE KULICK, a long time friend (whom I had recorded with on the Boot Camp "As You Were" release [available on iTunes!]) was already on hand, and it immediately turned into quite the experience as I was able to sneak a peak at one of the easter eggs for Volume 3! Yes, it’s true folks, the often rumored (but never before seen) Carnival of Souls studio footage exists, and the 5 or 6 minute montage that Alex and Roger had put together was stunning. Bruce was seeing this footage for the first time, and you could see (hear) all of the memories come back to him. It was quite the thrill to see footage of Bruce firing up a completely different (but altogether smokin’!) solo for ‘Hate’, and to watch Paul record his 12 string parts for "I Will Be There"; but one of the most amazing moments was to watch Gene coach the children’s choir for "Childhood’s End" in the studio as Paul remains in the control booth and decides to pull the rug out from everyone with an elaborate prank designed to scare the kids (by growling into the control booth mic "DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING!") There’s also a segment of the band shooting photos for what turned out to be the album cover... not to forget the awe inspiring sounds and sights of Gene and Paul standing at a studio mic together doing elaborate Beatle-esque harmonies that later never made the album. And that’s just 6 minutes of Volume 3, folks!

Expect an even larger package of content than either of the previous volumes, spanning 1992 thru 2001, to be precise. It’s too early to give any other details away, but I’m confident one and all will be immensely satisfied. All involved are targeting a late December KISSmass 2007 release!

Above you can see a photo taken just prior to the commentary session for Volume 3. Holding their own trophies commemorating the #1 debut of KISSology Vol. 2 are: Roger Coletti, Alex Coletti, BRUCE KULICK, PAUL STANLEY, TOMMY THAYER, GENE SIMMONS and yours truly: Ken Gullic. See you in the stores at KISSmas!

Click to enlarge Japan KISS Fan Expo Report
From: KISSOnline

The first day of the 2007 Japan KISS Fan Expo took place today in Tokyo as Japanese (and a few Australian) KISS fans gathered together to celebrate KISS. The Expo featured special guests Bob Kulick, Nate Morton (PAUL STANLEY Solo Band), Fran Stuart (Paul’s Guitar Tech) and Michael Norton (MARK ST. JOHN’s Brother).

For the first few hours fans shopped for KISS Collectibles and visited with the special guests - who signed autographs and took photos with all who attended. Next up were Q&A sessions with Nate, Fran and Bob, which focused on working with Mr. Stanley. Bob also spoke about his work with KISS over the years. A touching tribute to MARK ST. JOHN followed, featuring a talk with Michael and a video/audio presentation that included photos of Mark throughout his life.

The Expo ended with live performances from Japanese KISS tribute band KISS DOLLS and an Expo only Band featuring Bob (lead guitar), Fran (rhythm & lead vocals), Michael (bass) and Nate (drums). Appropriately enough, the band’s scorching set included only PAUL STANLEY written songs from both KISS and his 1978 Solo Album!

Click to enlarge Paul & Gene At Power Tour Party
From: KISSOnline

Paul and Gene appeared yesterday at the POWER TOUR Electric Guitar Launch Party at the Hard Rock Cafe in NYC. The Tiger Electronics and Gibson Guitar event was an invitation only event to celebrate the introduction of the Tiger Electronics POWER TOUR Electric Guitar, an authentic-sounding guitar featuring touch sensors instead of strings that teaches tweens to pound out power chords and shred leads.

Tiger Electronics is a division of Hasbro - which released the hugely successful KISS Tooth Tunes Toothbrush. Hasbro is also planning to introduce several new KISS items early next year. Paul and Gene were on hand to promote the Tooth Tunes and the Power Tour Guitar. The guys did many press interviews including USA Today and a lively interview with TV Show EXTRA.

To close the event, Paul and Gene performed "Rock And Roll All Nite" on stage with the help of several audience members. Paul actually played a POWER TOUR Electric Guitar as Gene sang with the crowd joining in! Ever the rocker, Paul tried over and over to smash the guitar at the end of the song and when the guitar would not break in two - Paul joked that the guitars are indestructible!

New ongoing Sci-Fi series debuts from IDW and Simmons Comics Group in November

Weirdness will get a whole new meaning when rock legend GENE SIMMONS invades bookstores with his Sci-Fi outsider series, Zipper, this November. Featuring exciting cover art by Adriano Loyola and showcasing the long-awaited reunion of writer Tom Waltz and artist Casey Maloney, the creative team responsible for the hit trade paperback Children of the Grave (IDW Publishing), Zipper promises to take readers out of this world this Fall… in more ways than one.

Xeng Ral is a soldier whose sole purpose is to serve in defense of Etheria, his home planet. Xeng Ral is not an elite soldier, by any means—rather, he is simply one amongst many. But something happens to Xeng Ral while performing his duty, as has happened to others before him: he begins to question his purpose and contemplate his autonomy. He is affected by this... changed. He realizes his own capacity for individualism and wishes to explore it further. He begins to speak of himself as "One." In Etheria's collective society, this will not do. The Etherian solution to individualistic behavior is to "recondition" the Etherians who attempt to break

An interview with GENE SIMMONS of KISS and designer Jason Dussault at Leone's store in Vancouver, Sept. 14, 2007. The occasion was the launch of their new clothing line, Moneybag.

Jason Dussault: "Gene created this logo 28 years ago and trademarked it, which is obviously a moneybag. What a brilliant thing to trademark. He has also trademarked some other great names, like Dominatrix, which you would assume would be trademarked. I think he just trademarked that a year ago.

"We met a year ago. I made Gene this leather jacket, which was the demon smiting a samurai. It was my version of the demon from KISS for Gene, his character. He really liked it, he liked the quality of the brand. He said 'I've got this logo, I'd like to do a high-end brand with it. What do you think?'

Click to enlarge Dayton KISS Fan Expo Report
From: KISSOnline

The first Dayton KISS Fan Expo was a huge success as hundreds of fans from as far away as Mexico and Canada gathered to celebrate their love for KISS! Fans spent over 8 hours visiting, shopping for collectibles and making new KISS friends.

PAUL STANLEY drummer Nate Morton made his first ever Expo appearance and judging from the crowd's response - this won't be his last. Nate spent the entire day greeting fans, signing autographs and posing for photos as he answered questions one on one. He was very accessible and friendly, and genuinely seemed to be enjoying himself . Nate even held an impromptu and unplanned drum clinic before his Q & A. He spoke highly of his time with Mr. Stanley and informed the crowd that DYNASTY was the first album he ever owned.

Kid drumming sensation and KISS fan – Angelo Coppola performed an energetic drumming performance of KISS & PAUL STANLEY tracks before being joined by the members of MR. SPEED (sans makeup) for a few songs. Later in the day MR. SPEED, in full costume and makeup, closed the Expo with a rockin’ set including KISS rarities such as "The Oath", "Love Theme from KISS" and "Rocket Ride"!

KISS bassist and television star/entrepreneur GENE SIMMONS was in Vancouver on Friday, cavorting with fans and, you guessed it, promoting his latest business venture - a clothing line called MoneyBag. Simmons, whose trademark tongue has spawned countless impersonations and a magazine title, has joined forces with Vancouver's Dussault Inc. to take the fashion world by storm. With the KISS Army to back him up, that shouldn't be too difficult as fans turned out in droves at L2 Leone on Howe St. to get the Family Jewels star's autograph -- some in places you'd never imagine an autograph would go. Click to enlarge Fantasy Camp Review
From: ROCK AND ROLL FANTASY CAMP.com

Think of Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp like a school of rock, only the camp counselors or teachers are famous rock stars and the students are adult musicians with the means to make their rock dreams come true. And come true they did. The excitement and fun onstage was contagious as the audience was swept away by the pure bombastic joy both the stars and their students shared onstage.

The students were divided into ten bands, each one coached by their rock star teacher. Every student on stage was totally psyched to be up there performing with their legendary leaders. Each band did two covers and an original song that they wrote for the event. It was fascinating and interesting to see how each of the rock star counselors arranged and conducted their bands according to their vision of what rock should be. It gave you real insight into the inner workings of a successful act. And some of the performances were off the hook.

For starters PAUL STANLEY was simply awesome. He was there to accompany each band on a song or two. No rock star posturing at all. There he suddenly appeared onstage, waved to the audience and launched into the first verse of Honky Tonk Woman followed by a long night of killer vocalizing. You could tell Paul was really giving it his all, singing leads, doing double leads and keeping his harmonies right on target. His voice was really in great shape for the whole affair. He came off humble and really acted like the perfect team player.

VIVA LAS VEGAS

Legendary guitarist for both KISS and Black 'N Blue, TOMMY THAYER will be in town this weekend, acting as grand marshal of the Beaverton Celebration Parade. The parade starts at 10 am, and winds from SW Allen Boulevard through Beaverton's allegedly "historic downtown." Best known as "that guy who replaced ACE FREHLEY," Tommy's been the Spaceman since 2003, but he's been a part of the KISS family for over 20 years, co-writing songs, producing and directing DVDs, and even teaching ol' Ace how to play his leads before the 1996 KISS Alive reunion tour. Although he's based in LA, the 1978 graduate of Beaverton's Sunset High gets back to Oregon frequently to party with his family and unwind at his gorgeous beach house on the Oregon Coast with his even more gorgeous wife, Amber. When not on axe duty or grand marshalling, Thayer keeps busy with charity work: He's on the board of trustees of Pacific University in Forest Grove and hosts its Legends Golf Classic, and also participates in "I Have a Dream" and "Make-a-Wish" fundraisers, supporting underprivileged children and school band programs. Hopefully Tommy will have time to sign a few autographs after the parade before he jets off to Whistler to join his KISS comrades for a show Saturday night. Beaverton pride!

What are your duties as grand marshal?

I ride in an antique car and look cool and wave. Actually, I hear the Sunset High marching band will be there and possibly play a KISS tune or two. How cool is that?

Click to enlarge KISS gets a $399 Guitar Hero Axe
From: gamespot.com

For Guitar Hero fans who find that going Pete Townshend on a plastic toy guitar after a monster encore is a little anti-climactic, a company called Art Guitar is offering an alternative with a little more heft. The company is now taking preorders for a life-size alternative to RedOctane's official ax, the limited edition AG Riff Master Guitar Controller for the PlayStation 2.

The AG Riff Master is actually a real guitar from Peavey, but it's been heavily modified to have the standard Guitar Hero fret buttons and strum bar embedded within it. The strings have been removed so players can actually use the guitar to play the game, but the rest of the guitar--including the rosewood neck, tuning pegs, and frets--are all intact.

As for the body design, Art Guitar's first offering will feature the iconic masters of merchandizing, KISS, decked out in full stage garb and ready to rock and roll all night, with the obligatory partying every day to follow. KISS is no stranger to the series, having lent their song "Strutter" to Guitar Hero II, and having signed the aforereferenced "Rock and Roll All Nite" to appear in Guitar Hero III.

Authenticity and eye-catching novelty have a price, however. The AG Master Riff will sell for $399. And those who like the idea of the guitar but don't cotton to KISS can take heart; Art Guitar plans to announce a variety of other body designs for the AG Master Riff in the coming months.

From: DVE Review

Two easily overlooked little gems can be found on KISSology Volume 2 so we thought we’d list them here as well.

Insert the third disc of the DVD set and on the Main Menu select the 'Credits' menu entry. Watch the credits and make sure you keep it running all the way to the end and you will see a 2-minute home video made by ERIC CARR of himself in his hospital bed after he had open heart surgery on April 12, 1991.

Another hidden gem can be found on the disc's Main Menu. Press the 'Up' arrow key to highlight the 'KISSology' logo and then press the 'Enter' key to unlock it. You will now get to see a one-minute clip of GENE SIMMONS being interviewed with MARK ST. JOHN, who was the lead guitarist on only one KISS album, Animalize, when he first joined the band in 1984. Sadly, the clip ends stating that St. John died in early 2007.

Former KISS guitarist BRUCE KULICK joined Paul on "Rock 'N' Roll All Nite", "Detroit Rock City" as well as the song "I'm Your Captain/ Closer To Home" which featured Paul singing with original Grand Funk Railroad singer Mark Farner.

Well since my last message I have been in at least a dozen states, with many shows all across America. So let me get to some of my travel adventures, in pictures and story.

Next we were off to Oregon, Eugene to be exact! A nice college town, and home of a vintage guitar shop that I had to visit. Well, I bought a beautiful Gibson ES 175 from 1958 at McKenzie River Music. As soon as I held this guitar I had to have it! Grand Funk played two shows in the area, so I had some time to visit the local pawn style shop as well. Found a sweet Fender Mexican Strat, and it shined on stage that night. So, a great time in Oregon for my guitar addiction and me!
