Francis Stueber Francis speaks in-depth about the maintenance of guitars for such heavyweights as PAUL STANLEY and Kevin Cronin.

"If Paul goes out of tune, it’s not his fault, it’s my fault," says Francis Stueber, referring matter-of-factly to one of his many responsibilities as guitar technician for KISS’s PAUL STANLEY, with whom he’s worked closely since 2002. "Usually I change his guitar every four to five songs so he doesn’t have to worry about going out of tune. It’s pretty straightforward with KISS; Paul only plays one tuning and he plays no more than six guitars. Really the only reason I change guitars is for aesthetics."

Stueber’s also worked behind the scenes for Heart, the Offspring, and REO Speedwagon’s Kevin Cronin--gigs that have established him as one of the most in-demand guitar techs in the U.S. But it’s his work with KISS that’s brought him the most recognition. Stueber’s relationship with Stanley, which began back in 2002, continues to this day. He’s worked on all subsequent tours and one-off shows, on behalf of KISS as well as Stanley’s solo efforts. He even took the stage with Gene and TOMMY THAYER during the GENE SIMMONS Family Jewels episode where they performed for the troops, and was on hand when Stanley cut his 2006 solo album Live to Win. And, of course, he maintains Stanley’s personal guitar stash, which includes a number of Les Pauls and SGs.

Thanks so much for informing everyone about Ace's show. I got tickets and went with my son and my friend Paul. I got to shake Ace's hand and here is a video of me trying to get Ace to shake my son's hand. http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=LEINADUNN

What a great thing for my son to see for only $20. It cost more for gas to get there and back.

Here is some news from the show.:

While outside and before the show we heard Ace doing a sound check. The played Rock and Roll All Night but did not do it at the show. They did do Love Gun with the drummer singing.

Ace made fun of Gene during the show. He said that he had a joke......."GENE SIMMONS" was all he said and then laughed!

Hope everyone had a great time this summer! I am happy to say that my busy summer is finally over and it was quite successful. First I have to share with everyone an amazing evening spent with Paul, Gene and Tommy up at Doc McGhee's office in Los Angeles. The distributors of the KISSology DVD's wanted to get us an award for the sales success already of the second one of the series, and since we all got together in the same room, time to be interviewed for KISSology III. Alex and Roger Coletti, the producers of the DVD's from MTV, were present to show us the footage and get our reactions on tape to add to the commentary track of the next DVD.

I was so excited to watch some amazing footage, and of course the stories we all shared about those KISS years brought back great memories. From REVENGE live, to the KISS convention tour, to MTV Unplugged, to the joining on MTV of Ace and Peter, and then of course into the huge KISS Reunion tour, with bonus footage of Carnival Of Souls recording sessions, this DVD is a must have! I am so proud of these DVD's coming out.

Click to enlarge GENE SIMMONS Dominatrix 1-2
From: Bookgasm.com

Posted: October 27, 2007

So I loved Simmons’ first foray into publishing, HOUSE OF HORRORS. I wasn’t so sure that I’d like his next character, Dominique Stern, the super-powered dominatrix of the title. I am not normally a fan of books that feature some big-boobed, leather-clad chick jumping around, being put in various sexualized positions like a third-rate Milo Manara story. I was actually afraid that we were going to have another STRIPPERELLA on our hands.

But damned if it isn’t goofy enough to work! Dominique isn’t some unlikable cardboard dominating bitch. She’s actually a sweet girl put into a silly enough predicament when she accidentally takes some pill which give her powers, causing bad people to come after her, forcing her to use her dominatrix skills and Amazonian built-in defense. It’s Wonder Woman meets the films of Just Jaeckin. With the exception of a few forced panels of completely unrealistic girl talk (writers, please ask a woman for help when writing dialogue like this), there’s no pain here, only complete pleasure. Keep it up, Simmons! –Louis Fowler

Here are some photos from KISS' performance last night in Las Vegas. The band performed at a private event for the Entrepreneurs' Organization at the Beach at Mandalay Bay Hotel. The Entrepreneurs’ Organization is a global community of business owners, all of whom run companies that exceed $1M (US) in revenue.

Friday night over 1500 business owners rocked from the opening of "Deuce" through the ending of "Rock & Roll All Nite" as KISS tore through a 17 song set! The atmosphere was reminiscent of a spring break party with many attendees standing in the pool that surrounded the stage, singing along to each song as beach balls flew through the air. It was quite the party for all who attended!

Over the next few days we'll post additional KOL Exclusive photos from back stage, sound check and the concert too.

GENE SIMMONS’ HOUSE OF HORRORS
From Dan Head's Friday Mad Science Column
Anthology edited by Tom Waltz
Published by IDW, 60+ pages for $9.99

I’ll admit up front that horror comics in general and horror anthologies specifically aren’t my bag as a reader, but so far I’ve liked this series a lot. Issue 1 was very strong, with at least three stories that stood out in my mind afterwards as both disturbing and thought-provoking. Chris Ryall’s story about the first manned mission to Hell was probably the best of the bunch, but I also enjoyed Tom Waltz’s story—as I always seem to—and the last story, a really creepy alien abduction fantasy written by Dwight L. MacPherson. I didn’t think Issue #2 was quite as strong as Issue 1, but it was sexier, and it had a cool food-fetish motif that I dug the most. And in fairness, the last story, written by Ivan Brandon, was both creepy as Hell and surprising—at least to me.

What this new anthology series really has going for it, however, is its art. It is exceedingly rare to find an indie anthology of any kind with art that’s decent, but this one is not only decent but actually exceptional throughout. That, to me, was the best thing about this series. Not only did we get a bunch of different creepy stories, we got them with a variety of different artistic visions. Different guys see this stuff different ways, with the result that each new story is a sort of a revelation. Even when the writer is reaching with his ending, most times the artists here are making it work.

Click to enlarge Wagging Tounges: Ten Questions With GENE SIMMONS
From: mania.com

Posted: October 22, 2007

You think you know GENE SIMMONS. You know KISS and the Demon with the extraordinary tongue, the actor, and the writer. Now, in his effort to enter every medium imaginable, Simmons has branched into comic book publishing with his IDW imprint, Simmons Comics Group. Comic readers have seen KISS comics in the shops since the band’s first rise to prominence. Marvel published the band’s first incarnation as superheroes. Image, Dark Horse, and, most recently, Platinum Studios have published the band’s exploits since the 1996 reunion. But, Simmons Comics Group stands as a departure from KISS and a personal project. In fact, Simmons efforts to distance the imprint from his band and its licensed comics suggest a desire to attract not just KISS fans, but all comic readers. Speaking as one who’s never cared for KISS but admires Simmons’s ambition, the first issue of Zipper pleasantly surprised me. Plotted by Simmons but written by IDW editor Tom Waltz and drawn by Casey Maloney (respective writer and artist of Children of the Grave), Zipper tells the story of Xeng Ral – an alien rebel that escapes from Etheria, collectivist planet, and reaches Earth, with his former masters in pursuit. He lands on our planet clad from head to toe in a PVC suit similar to what you’d see at a fetish club. Before he even arrives, a televangelist named Dr. Deveroux prophesizes his arrival to rapt audiences – all of whom willingly fill the Doctor’s coffers for his good word. And, to Xeng Ral’s dismay, the first humans he encounters do not come in peace. Zipper is the next series launched by Simmons Comic Group, after GENE SIMMONS House of Horrors and Dominatrix. The first issue will hit shops in November. Mr. Simmons kindly answered a few of my questions about both Simmons Comics Group and Zipper.

Kurt Amacker: Zipper begins with a dystopian premise – an individual trying to break out of a collectivist society. A "dystopian escape" is not an uncommon premise in <>science fiction, but it’s a very deliberate and forceful story angle. What drew you to that idea, as opposed to just having Xeng Ral escape his planet for some other offense?

GENE SIMMONS: My mindset in creating Zipper and, as later named by Tom, Xeng Ral, was to take a page out of Anthem by Ayn Rand and Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein – a <>fish out of water fable. In Heinlein, the Martian boy comes to Earth and, though a human being himself, doesn't really understand the human condition. Rand's main character "dares" think OF himself and FOR himself – an individual. I'm sure there's a bit of Silver Surfer's personality in there as well.

The third release in KISS' archival "KISSology" DVD series will arrive in time for Christmas. "Volume Three: 1992-2000" is due Dec. 18 via VH1 Classic and will feature four DVDs comprising nearly 10 hours of footage.

The first disc begins with a performance recorded at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit from November 1992. It also features the August 1995 "MTV Unplugged" set which found the original KISS lineup of GENE SIMMONS, PAUL STANLEY, ACE FREHLEY and PETER CRISS perform together on stage for the first time in nearly 16 years.

The second disc chronicles the original lineup's subsequent successful reunion tours of the late '90s, including the Detroit kickoff of the 1996 outing. Five tracks recorded near the Brooklyn Bridge in New York for the same year's MTV Video Music Awards round out the DVD.

Click to enlarge Gene Photo A Fraud
From: KISSasylum.com

As pointed out by a KISS Asylum reader, the photo we posted on October 16 of Gene allegedly spitting blood on the non-makeup Lick it Up Tour is a fraud. We suspected it was, and we thank everyone who wrote with their comments on this. The shadow on Gene's chest and bass was from the microphone stand and someone, (for who knows what reason), digitally added some blood to make it look like it was something that it was not.

So, don't believe everything you read or see in the media. Even a bastion of news pride and accuracy like KISSasylum.com can be wrong sometimes.

Although it was rumored, it was not until now that we have photographic evidence of Gene spitting blood on the Lick it Up Tour of '83 / '84. Gene has denied this particular latent Demon habit followed him into the non-make up era.

But is this photo real? The vertical discoloration on Gene's bass is actually the shadow of the microphone stand and cord, not a dripping blood stain and the low quality of the image would hide any alterations. The photo is inconclusive, so if anyone has any information on this, please let us know.

Anyone familiar with PAUL STANLEY's day job with KISS won't be shocked to learn that he's long nurtured an artistic streak. From the band's elaborate costumes and makeup to concert stages and album covers, his visual creativity has played a huge role in the band's long-running success. But that doesn't make Stanley's side gig as an abstract painter any less of a surprise. What started as a means of working through a painful divorce eight years ago has blossomed into a second career for the motivated rocker, who recently talked with The Sunday Paper about his background, his inspiration and the differences between rock crowds and gallery patrons.

Q: You were an art major; you graduated from the High School of Music and Art. Was abstract art your focus back then?

A: Never. I was much more intent on trying to make everything look as realistic as possible. And what I realized in the last eight years is, I'd much rather connect with something on an emotional level. The beauty of abstract art and expressionist art is … it's less based on an intellectual as opposed to an emotional response. I'd rather have something hit you instinctively. I try to paint emotion.

GENE SIMMONS
Dominatrix: Lesson #1
Writer: Sean Taylor
Artist: Flavio Hoffe
Cover: Alex Garner
Letters: Neil Uyetake
Editors: Chris Ryall and Tom Waltz
Published by The GENE SIMMONS Comics Group and IDW, 22 pages for $3.99

One of the very cool things about reviewing indies is that you occasionally get some kick-ass free swag. In this case, after I reviewed Zipper #1, Tom Waltz and the guys at IDW sent me a bunch more stuff to review, which is sort of par for the course but which is also one of the better perks of doing this job. But this particular box o’ swag rocked harder than most because it had a copy of GENE SIMMONS’s new comic, Dominatrix—Lesson 1. And it wasn’t just any copy. It was a variant cover edition, signed by none other than GENE SIMMONS himself. People, that was an incredibly righteous thing for those guys to send over, and not just because I happen to be a pretty big fan of KISS. Well, not so much the face-painting aspect of the group, but I like their music a lot and have since I was a kid. As a matter of fact, I even took said signed copy to work and showed it around to my fellow cubicle-dwellers, a thing which I pretty much NEVER do because, let’s face it, it’s not at all easy to be taken seriously as an engineer when you’re a history major like I am, and playing show-and-tell with your comic collection typically doesn’t help around the office. But this time I made an exception because... well, if you can’t figure out why, then I doubt I can help you.

With all of that in mind, I feel like I ought to admit up front that Dominatrix is not my normal thing. After all, Mr. Simmons described his book as "T&A meets the CIA" in IDW’s promo literature, whereas I tend to go for more of the pseudo-intellectual stuff—and Danger Girl. But I’ll say this about Dominatrix: it’s a Hell of a lot smarter than I thought it would be. I was expecting a nonsensical Brian Pulido-esque boobathon, but in fact, this is a story that’s entirely sensible, well-crafted, and basically a heck of a lot of fun right from the start. And yeah, this book has its share of tits and ass, but it’s not gratuitous. It’s not like Wonder Woman dressing up in a bathing suit to go fight crime. Instead, our heroine is an actual dominatrix who gets caught up in something scary that she doesn’t understand. And since she’s working at the time of the Event, well, what did you think she was gonna be wearing?

The first time Glenn See saw GENE SIMMONS was at a KISS concert in Indianapolis back in 1975.

At the time, See probably never figured he’d run into Simmons again . . . much less 32 years later at an ethanol plant construction site in Plainview, Texas.

But that’s exactly what happened last week when Simmons, the former lead singer of the 1970s rock band KISS, flew into town for a quick visit at the ethanol plant being built east of the city.

Last Saturday was our final show of the H&H/AC/QR Tour package. We played Irvine Verizon amphitheater. Was kool to tour with the other bands & I was inspired by Vinny (Appice - H&H) & Scott (Rockenfield - QR) on drums for sure. A few other drummer came down to hang as well. Here is a pic of Bobby Blotzer (RATT) James Kottak (SCORPIONS) and myself.

Bill Baker is back with his October updates to his "ACE FREHLEY Archives" website!

Pages from my upcoming book, 'ACE FREHLEY : The Ultimate Fan Scrapbook' are now online for viewing. "I am trying to have the book completed before Christmas 2007, which means I'll have it early in 2008, and I'm offering the fans a sneak peak at some of the pages now so you can see I'm really working on it."

"I've also been digging around my collection and found some footage from a rare outdoor Ace show from Suntan Lake, NJ 1994. This footage has been remastered by The ACE FREHLEY archives webmaster Matt C with soundboard audio. This video is definitely worth a look for all you ACE FREHLEY Fans."

A FEW ADDITIONAL TICKETS WILL GO ON SALE FOR THE EDDIE TRUNK HALLOWEEN BASH WITH ACE FREHLEY! THESE SEATS WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE STARTING 9AM EST MONDAY 10/8 THROUGH TICKETMASTER OUTLETS ONLY. GRAB THEM WHILE YOU CAN, GOOD LUCK!

Thanks to ACE FREHLEY for droping by the studio last night. Ace hasn't been on the show in almost 2 years so it was fun to catch up. We talked about the Halloween bash, KISS, the solo album, Dunkin Donuts commercial and more. Here are some bulletpoints. Of course audio of the interview will be available on this site [EddieTrunk.com] after the show airs on all affiliate outlets. See "Syndication" for more on the repeat airings and outlets:

* He would be open to one final KISS show (not tour, show) with the original members if all things were equal (same thing PETER CRISS said in my MSG interview). This really should happen in my opinion. A chance to end it the right way with one show in NYC and everyone goes out on the right note, but who knows....

An amazing 6 minute video clip of KISS in New Zealand has recently surfaced. Even the biggest connoisseurs of vintage KISS video clips have never seen this. Amazing quality too! The band gets off the plane with no make up and there is a hilarious interview that, although brief, is reminiscent of the infamous Tom Snyder show antics. It's topped off by some great concert footage. A must see video!

From: KISS Asylum

Posted: October 5, 2007

After we (Silent Rage) signed with Frontiers Records this summer, and going into this new CD, we started discussing songs & direction. We also wanted to make this a killer CD with some special touches and performances. I called Bruce to see if he could come on board to perform on a song we had just recorded for the new CD called "Man or Machine, and told him I had written it back around the KISS Revenge Era, and the band had re-worked it some. I thought he'd be perfect for including his guitar solo touches on the song. He said yes, and turned out a killer performance. It's always a treat and a pleasure to work with Bruce. What a fantastic guitarist and true professional!

We had also asked ERIC SINGER to record the drum track for it, and he would have, but his touring schedule conflicted with our recording schedule, and he wasn't available until December. Big Bummer, we'll catch him next time around!

Anyway there's the KISS Related scoop. We're looking forward to unleashing this next CD of 11 songs plus a bonus track. The new Silent Rage fourth CD title is "Four Letter Word."

Click to enlarge KISS Legend Exhibits his Diverse Artistic Talents
From: INsite Magazine

Posted: October 4, 2007

Best known and recognized as one of the founding members and the lead singer of KISS, PAUL STANLEY continues to exhibit his diverse artistic talents. In 1999 Stanley spent three months on stage in Toronto as the phantom in the production of Phantom of the Opera and more recently finished his "Live to Win" solo tour. Along with a handful of KISS shows this summer, Stanley has been spending a good bit of his time in front of an easel with brushes and paint. After years of painting his face, Stanley is now putting his paint to canvas. He’s touring the Wentworth Gallery locations showing his art and visits Atlanta October 19-20. He recently spoke with Dave Cohen.

Obviously you followed the musical path that you did with KISS but was there an interest in other art forms at an earlier age?

Well, I’d always done different forms of art and I was fairly gifted as others told me and that’s why I was admitted to the High School of Music and Art as an art major. I think that, you know, KISS is obviously a product of both and KISS allowed me to have an outlet that incorporated both. I got to design stages, I got to design album covers and also to play music but the two also can live very independently of each other.

Tickets to original KISS guitarist ACE FREHLEY's October 31 performance at New York City's Hard Rock Cafe as part of New York radio personality Eddie Trunk's annual listener Halloween party sold out a short time after they went on sale earlier this week.

Commented Trunk: "Well, I told you this show would sell out quick and I wasn't hyping you! I knew this would be a big deal and I've heard from people all over the world coming to see it. Really makes me proud that this sold out simply from a few mentions on my radio show one night and, of course, the info here on EddieTrunk.com. You guys rule!"

Trunk added, "Spent today in NYC with Ace. We had lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe and I showed Ace the stage and venue for the event. He's totally pumped about getting on stage and I'm already making my song requests for the set! Remember, my radio show on Q104 is the ONLY way to now get into this event! Just listen to the show the next four weeks. Anytime I play a song with Ace on it 25th caller gets free tix to this now-sold-out event.

"Ace will be on with me this Friday night and there is a chance a few more tix might be released through Ticketmaster in the coming days. I will let you know if and when this happens exclusively on this site and on the radio show."

1. Tell us what you've been doing before working with Paul on Live To Win tour?

I was born in Leningrad. I started my musical education at age 5 playing classical guitar. One day my Mom read an ad in the paper looking for kids to audition for the kids band "Raduga," but by the time we got to the place across the town they had already chosen the guitar player, so they asked me if I wanted to play bass and the rest is history...

After that I got a call from the band "SOUZ" with Igor Romanov from "Zemlyane". That was my first touring gig - I think I was 16 or so... Then my Mom got a call from Vladimir Kisilev of "Zemlyane" and he asked my Mom if she would be OK with it if I joined "Zemlyane." So thats how my professional career started. We did a lot of touring, 9 months out of the year, 4-5 shows a day! 6 days a week! When I tell that to my friends in America, nobody really believes me that was possible.

Legendary guitarist ACE FREHLEY will jam on October 31 with some of his friends at New York City's Hard Rock Cafe — located at 1501 Broadway at 43rd Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. for the 8:00 p.m. jam, part of Eddie Trunk's annual listener Halloween party.

Frehley is very happy to be back playing for the first time since his halcyon days with KISS, the band he co-founded. He's been holed up in the recording studio of late working on his upcoming solo album, due for a 2008 release. "I can't wait to get up on stage and rock 'n' roll," says Ace of the one-off show that already is garnering tremendous response.

Although information on the set and who will play with Frehley is being kept under wraps, Ace says to expect KISS classics and solo originals. The traditional costume contest, complete with prizes, will, of course, be part of the festivities.
